True Blood Fan Anniversaries!

Well, it sure is funny how we all started together last year and how we all found each other and what a great year we've had. THE FUN of doing this has been making so many friends and meeting and staying in touch online, by phone and in person.

The anniversary of this blog was November 4th , the anniversary of my first blogtalk radio show was November 24th ( you can still listen to all the podcasts !) and the one year anniversary of True Blood Music Video of the Day is coming up next week !

The lovely @SookieBonTemps has posted a little on her blog about it being her 1 year anniversary tweeting as Sookie on Twitter -thanks for the shout Sook !

I would say thanks to everyone who has been a guest on the radio show and to our weekly Season 2 TB professional reviewers Brian Juergens/Andy Swist and Mark Blankenship and Meredith Woerner. Thanks to all my great friends from the HBO True Blood wiki and to everyone who reads the blog and comments ! "

Holy smokes! It’s my one year anniversary on Twitter!

But one year ago on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, I was sitting at home a little bored when I decided to create the @sookiebontemps account. Maybe it was True Blood / Sookiebook withdrawal. Who knows? Either way, something inside of me said, “What the hell? Why not tweet a few Sookie-isms and see if this sticks?”

A year later, I’m still here. And I’ve got a whole lot of people that I’d like to thank for making Twitter a boatload of fun:

  • Thank you to everyone who followed me in the beginning when Bon Temps on Twitter only had one resident.
  • Thanks to @TrueBloodDallas who knows how to spot a lost lamb when she sees one — it’s certainly been a wild ride from our first chat, to meeting in L.A. for Paley, going to Shreveport to meet Charlaine, to doing Talk Blood every Sunday night after Season 2 epis. Without you, I would not have met the awesome @robiart and the lovely Patrick.

Stephen Moyer and the Nature of True Blood

Bites for Blood kicks off on Thursday, December 3 at 9:00pm

This from the lovely @SookieBonTemps

Would you give a drop of blood to the Red Cross in exchange for a bite from Eric or a kiss from Sookie?

The True Blood players on Twitter hope you will. They are hosting Bites for Blood, the first ever virtual blood drive held on Twitter. Their goal is simple -- fill a blood vial with half-a-million drops of blood to raise awareness for the American Red Cross.

Bites for Blood kicks off on Thursday, December 3 at 9:00pm CDT with one night of virtual kissing and biting booths manned by everyone's favorite True Blood characters on Twitter. Participants simply:
  1. Choose the human or vampire you'd like to have kiss or bite you.
  2. Click on their badge.
  3. By clicking, you will be directed back to Twitter where you'll tweet your support and receive a kiss or bite from the character you chose.
  4. The page will remain open until Sunday, December 5th at 9pm CDT so that you can continue donating drops to Bites for Blood.
It's an easy and fun way to show support for the Red Cross. And if it inspires you to take the next step and make a real life blood donation or contribution to the Red Cross, then even better.

For more information on Bites for Blood and how you can get involved, go to http://truebloodtwitter.com. Be sure to tweet the page and share it on Facebook to get the word out!

True Blood Season 3 : Grant Bowler ?

Grant Bowler cast for Season 3 -wonder who he will be ?

from Daily Telegraph UK

Hats off to Bowler

INSIDER had a flying visit last week from likable lad Grant Bowler, who rightly talked up his latest (and arguably greatest) Stateside gig, True Blood.Unable to contain his excitement about the role, Bowler tipped this columnist into the news.

"Mate, it's HBO and it's the King ... it's the chance to work for an Oscar-winner [series creator Allan Ball] and alongside an Oscar-winner [Anna Paquin]," he said.

It's a great break for the 41-year-old Bowler, who has struggled with bad luck in the US for the past four years, largely because of directorial whims and the writers' strike.

The new role - he wouldn't detail his character - has him becoming bi-coastal, given that he will maintain his commitments on Ugly Betty (seen here on 7Two).

"Ugly Betty rolls from deep, one-on-one connected, touching realism to absolute farce to physical comedy and clowning and everything in between - I love it," Bowler enthused.

Bowler's first episode on Ugly Betty screens next Tuesday at 7.30pm on 7Two.

Coming Out of the Coffin: Vampires Among Us y

From ABC News

Many Self-Described Vampires Keep Lifestyle Secret, Fear Ostracism from Co-Workers, Family

They roam our streets and tend to the sick. People who describe themselves as real-life vampires have found ways to live quietly among us.

"I'm not going to worry and waste sleep at night over who might think I'm a little kooky, because I think I'm a vampire," said Kiera, a registered nurse who works in a hospital in Atlanta. She did not want to be identified by her real name.

Throughout the country and all over the world, a hidden subculture of people believe they are real vampires. They claim to have an "energy leak," which makes them feel sick and lethargic. To offset this energy imbalance, they say they need to feed on other people's energy or blood.

"I try to be very ethical about what I do. I feed predominantly from crowds, so as not to cause harm," said Kiera,

Carol sends us this fabulous list- if you aren't watching the parades you can listen to one of these while you chop onions at 6 am getting that bird in the oven tomorrow morning.

100 Free Audio Books You Should Have Read By Now

With so much school work to do, it may seem impossible to get any extra reading in, but luckily, there are free audio books available to help you out. Whether you need to catch up on reading that you skipped over in high school or would enjoy expanding your horizons with books you haven’t read but feel you should have, download these books and listen any time.

A Look at Werewolves from WOLF MAN to NEW MOON

From Salon Magazine- it's great that everyone will be ready for Alcide!

My wife and I went to see New Moon yesterday and we both enjoyed the blockbuster sequel to Twilight. It's good to finally see some werewolves getting screen time next to those ubiquitous vampires.

The werewolf has been a popular monster in movies and television for generations. Some look like humans in shape, walking upright and maintaining mostly human faces, while others (like the design from New Moon, seen above) look more like the real animal (in New Moon's case, jumbo-sized.)

Here's a look at some of the werewolves from TV and movie history that I particularly enjoyed.

Happy Birthday to Charlaine Harris and Bill Compton !

Happy Birthday!! We know Charlaine uses names in her books from real- life friends and family members but did you know she always gives the characters in her Sookie novels the same birthdays as family members in her own family?

She decided to share her birthday with the Bill!

CampBlood "House of Horrors" Ep. 3: Cannibal Thanksgiving!

We're roasting more than turkey in this very special (and slightly nauseating) Thanksgiving episode of House of Horrors. We take a look at the tradition of family meals, particularly the ones in horror movies like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Cannibal Holocaust and Serial Mom. And you thought your family was nuts!

But the main course of this ep is our recipe and how-to for a deliciously disgusting - and budget-friendly - alternative to a roast turkey...

A Turkey Meat Face!

Yes, we've taken a tip from our cannibal cousins and whipped up a gory centerpiece that is sure to turn heads (and stomachs!) at your holiday table.

Joining us this week in the kitchen is cartoonist and illustrator Tim Piotrowski (the Glitch series, Kool Aid Gets Fired), who shares some knife-sharpening tips and teaches us how to dice an onion in about 10 seconds.

To watch the episode, check out the CampBlood.org Blog (full link: http://campblood.org/Newblog/?p=1363). Please feel free to share with your friends/enemies/readers/colleagues!

And don't forget to subscribe to the CampBlood Channel on YouTube for future eps!

We hope you enjoy and have a safe and happy Thanksgiving - no matter whom you have for dinner!

All the best,

Buzz and the CampBlood Staff

The Vampires in My Life

From Reading Amongst chaos blog

I hate to have to admit inspiration from an E! countdown, but the other day I saw them do 'Top 10 Vampires We Love' and I just couldn't take it. Some of their picks I agreed with but because they were only focusing on TV/Movie vampires I feel like they left out a lot. And, since I'm a girl (duh!) and my vampires don't have to appeal to anyone other than me, I've decided to do a list with just male vampires. Different ages and genres, along with a wide range of different methods of distribution to the public, but here is a list of the Top Vampires in My Life, along with a couple runners up that I thought were definitely worth mentioning.

11. Simon, The Silver Kiss - People love to talk about Twilight as the epitome of teen vampire romance and angst, but I think that's mainly because they haven't read about Zoe and Simon in The Silver Kiss. I think there is no truer expression of love then in this book, where in spite of her desire to be changed, Simon sticks to his guns and his understanding of what being a vampire actually means and refuses to make Zoe a vampire. Instead, in one of the most poignant goodbyes ever, he sits with her to see his last sunrise.

Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer wedding set for February in Mexico ?

Meanwhile, Anna Paquin is preparing for her wedding to her True Blood co-star Stephen Moyer, reportedly in just four months. No, there's not going to be a vampire theme - the pair are set to have a low-key event in Mexico, WD reports.

"It feels organic," Paquin says of the couple's wedding plans. "It's more about being family than becoming Bridezilla overnight and wearing some big meringue wedding dress. That would scare the shit out of me."

Wearing a wedding dress scares you, Anna, but dating a 173-year-old blood-thirsty vampire from another century is sweet as? Your priorities are out of whack.

Superhero story lured Kwanten back to Oz

True Blood star Ryan Kwanten could have his pick of projects since his career skyrocketed.

But it was an independent Aussie film by a first-time director that he was begging to be a part of.

Kwanten stars in the title role in Griff The Invisible, which director Leon Ford believes might be Australia's first superhero film and definitely our first superhero romantic comedy.

Griff is a meek office worker by day, but at night he turns into a crime-fighting superhero.

It lured Kwanten back to Australia from the US during a brief break before filming the hit vampire TV series True Blood.

"This film was something that went straight to my core," Kwanten told AAP in Sydney.

"It's the kind of story that you read and, even if I hadn't got the role, it would have stuck with me.

I'm just saying that sleeping all day looks familiar

What do all these vampires in pop culture resemble? Showbiz types and artists

Yesterday, in the big, important section of the paper, the distinguished professor Mark Kingwell opined on the current vampire fad. He mused in a joking manner on the possible interpretations of the craze, and offered a series of “meanings” for it all. You will note, first, that in the big, important section of the paper, authors opine and muse. Hereabouts we merely rant, harangue and bluster our days away. You should note, secondly, that one possible meaning of the vampire craze was missing from the distinguished professor's list. I put it to you that vampires are stand-ins for performers, showbiz types and artists.

There is good reason to wonder about the meaning of the vampire craze. The critters are everywhere. We're tripping over vampires. There's that Twilight movie franchise. (CBC's The National devoted acres of time to it the other night, presumably because it is of national importance.) There's Vampire Diaries (Thursdays, The CW, A Channel, 8 p.m.) which is one of the few hit shows of this new TV season. There's True Blood (currently in repeats, tonight, HBO Canada, 10 p.m.) which is the best show on TV, bar none.

Pains in the neck

Get the garlic! Vam pires have invaded movie houses across the nation in the form of "New Moon," which Post critic Kyle Smith gave a measly 1½ stars in his review.

But fans of this movie don't care what Smith or any other critic thinks. They're going to plop down their money no matter what.

This is as good a time as any for a brief survey of the vampire genre, which owes its existence to Bram Stoker's 1887 novel "Dracula."

The earliest surviving vampire flick is "Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror," a 1922 silent by German F.W. Murnau.

The Etruscan Roots of The Twilight Saga

hmm... Tuscany or Shreveport....? Hard decision ;-)
From Independent UK

Were there vampires in Volterra? Probably not, but the Etruscans had their own brigade of gods and demons representing night, death and resurrection.

'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' release fuels vampire mania around the world. While teenagers go completely nuts over the film's hunky vampire Edward (Robert Pattinson) – one wrote 'bite me' on her face as she queued with 5,000 others to see him in London last week – other die-hard fans of the Twilight books, written by Stephenie Meyers, are also descending on the small hill-top town of Volterra, in Tuscany, where some of the action of the film is set (even though filming actually took place in Montepulciano, 70 miles away). As a result, hoards of teenagers have been visiting Volterra – a town with Etruscan roots and its own heritage of Etruscan demons, gods and goddesses associated with death, resurrection and the night.

The Twilight Saga isn't the only vampire story to grace our screens lately. The popular US series True Blood – about a young woman in Louisiana who also falls in love with a vampire – based on the The Southern Vampire Mysteries series of novels by Charlaine Harris, also gathered cult status, adding to the growing body of vampire fiction on our bookshelves and on our screens. The nineties saw the likes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Interview with a Vampire, Bram Stoker's Dracula as well as From Dusk Till Dawn. The 21st century has seen vampire fever take over with Van Helsing, more Buffy and now Twilight and True Blood.

'Twilight,' 'True Blood' take opposing approaches to vampire sex

From the Dallas Morning News ( right here in Area 6)

Edward, the undead hero of the Twilight movies and books, broods and simmers like a James Dean starter kit. Jacob, his werewolf foil, sports six-pack abs and looks as if he's been bench-pressing pickups. But they might as well be hanging out in a nunnery for all the action they get. Their chaste love interest, Bella, can only pine.

Then there's Sookie Stackhouse, the spitfire waitress at the heart of HBO's cult series True Blood (based on novels by Charlaine Harris). As Bella chills in the Pacific Northwest, Sookie gets hot and heavy with her vampire beau Bill in steamy Louisiana. No repression here: The deliciously campy True Blood, which enters its third season next year, just says yes. (It also indulges in every last one of HBO's relaxed content allowances. As the ads say, it's not TV.)

Bella Bella! Beauties and their beasts

From Independent UK

A record-breaking number of filmgoers has been bitten this weekend by the film New Moon, the latest instalment in the Twilight saga. Teenage hearts both sides of the Atlantic have been set fluttering by the vampire tales featuring the British actor Robert Pattinson.

His co-star, Kristen Stewart, has her own, growing following. She reprises her role as Bella Swann in the new film, continuing her celibate on-screen love affair with Edward Cullen, a vampire with a heart.

The couple's chemistry – and the fact their passion is unlikely to be consummated – is driving the film's success, as it did the multimillion-selling books they first appeared in.

Vampires: Hollywood Bloodsuckers

8 Shows that Are Creepy in a Good Way

Some shows are creepy just because, well, they're icky to think about. Like 'The Girls Next Door' (twins sleeping with the same old guy!) or 'Hoarders' (the ultimate pack-rats!). Then there are shows that are frightening, but in a good way. Read on for eight such shows that make you look under the bed at night, avoid cemeteries, and ponder alternate universes.

'Ghost Whisperer'
Things were always a bit scary for Melinda Gordon and her spiritual buddies, but this show has upped the fright factor with the Shinies, the Book, and the mysterious Shadows who not only attack people (including Melinda), but can also possess bodies. And you'd better not talk about them, or they'll do bad things to your relatives! At this point, simply helping spirits into the light must seem like frolicking through a sunny field of daisies for Melinda.

Zombie and vampire flu in Sweden. Alexander Skarsgård and Ann-Sofie Back infected.

A terrible virus that turns people, mortals in this case, into mindless zombies or bloodsucking vampires has become a threat in Sweden. It is still unclear as to how the virus came to the country but the virus has become left an imprint on Swedish culture, showing up in TV shows, movies and even on the runway.

The well-known actor Alexander Skarsgård was already infected in 2008 when he began playing evil vampire Eric Northman in the TV-show “True Blood,” which recently aired on Swedish television. It appears that he is in the recovery process, as his normal complexion has returned during the breaks in between shooting. read on

Vampires Are Hot Hollywood Property To The Tune Of Nearly $800 Million

from Access Hollywood

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --
According to legend, vampires may be elusive creatures, but in Hollywood those fangtastic bloodsuckers are the new mainstream.

According to a new report on The Daily Beast, Vampire franchises are hot to the tune of nearly $800 million a year.

The Web site reported on Friday that the “Twilight” franchise, which just opened its latest installment, “New Moon,” is worth a fat $500 million a year at the movies.

HBO’s “True Blood,” based on Charlaine Harris’ “Sookie Stackhouse” books, is the most successful series on the network since “The Sopranos,” and the Daily Beast estimates it brings in a likely $50 million a year. The CW’s new hit show “The Vampire Diaries,” is estimated to take in $20 million.

And as the shows and movies continue to gain strength, book sales are boosted as well.

Between “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer, Harris and a number of additional popular franchises such as “The Vampire Academy” and “Vampire Hunter,” the Daily Beast estimates the publishing industry adds in another $100 million.

ENGLISH UNDEAD

From The Washington Times and from the British Ambassador ( not kidding )

ENGLISH UNDEAD

Is there something inherently evil about an English accent?

The British ambassador doesn't think so, but he is seeing what he calls a "cinematic trend" in Hollywood where the latest, chic vampire movies feature English actors.

Rather than complain about the typecasting,Ambassador Nigel Sheinwald welcomes the exposure for young, talented British actors and expects the trend to continue.

"It seems an immutable law of Hollywood that the finest baddies in American film are always played by Brits. I'm not sure exactly why - there is nothing inherently menacing, I think, about an English accent," he wrote on his blog at http://blogs.fco. gov.uk/roller/sheinwald.

He was inspired to muse on the fame of British bloodsuckers with the release of the second installment of the vampire saga, "Twilight." British actor Robert Pattinson plays the young vampire,Edward Cullen, in his star-crossed romance with Bella Swan, played by American actress Kristen Stewart.

"This spectacular teen drama ... has attracted, in some circles, as much attention as the current health care debate (although being undead would still presumably be classed as a pre-existing condition?)," Mr. Sheinwald quipped.

He also noted that another English actor, Stephen Moyer, has "proved a tremendous hit" as vampire Bill Compton in the HBO series, "True Blood."

British actors have a long history of portraying Dracula, who, according to legend, was Romanian. Nevertheless, the English accent stuck, like the cape, the bat and a stake through the heart. Christopher Lee played the vampire count, popularized by the Irish novelistBram Stoker in 1897, in several films in the 1950s and Gary Oldman continued the tradition, playing Dracula in a 1992 film.

Mr. Sheinwald wondered whether this was really just a coincidence or something more "cryptic."

"Could it be the British climate creates the pale and pasty complexion necessary to portray authentically Bram Stoker's monster?" he asked. "Or is it our 'deadpan' humor, putting the grave in graveyard, that makes us British especially suited to vampire kitsch?"

Mr. Sheinwald concluded with confidence that British actors will continue to enjoy stardom in Hollywood.

"The 'stakes' may be high," he said, "but you my most definitely 'count' on it!"

The Evolution of the Vampire

From the Victoria Advocate

Over the centuries, the image of the vampire has been revamped (pun completely intended) multiple times. From mindless monster to suave, yet cold-hearted artistocrat, to today's incarnation of sympathetic, cursed hero, the evolution of the vampire typically reflects the culture of the time. But although the image of the vampire may change, one thing that doesn't is that they are constantly being resurrected (Bah-ZING!) in popular culture.

Ancient Times

Even the earliest civilizations, such as the Sumerians, had stories of vampire-like beings and blood-sucking demons, according to an article in the American Chronicle. Many of the early tales, though not all, describe vampires as soulless, and in some cases, mindless killers.

1450: The Real-Life Dracula

The historical figure that the character of Dracula is based on is Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia, or as you probably know him, Vlad the Impaler, according to Eric Nuzum, author of "The Dead Travel Fast: Stalking Vampires from Nosferatu to Count Chocula." He wasn't a vampire, nor did he drink blood, but he did murder thousands of his countrymen. His chosen last name "Dracula," a reference to a religious order founded by his father, translates to "son of the devil," according to Nuzum.

The Lure of the Vampire

From Wall Street Journal

If you step out of your house late Thursday night, you'll witness an overwhelming scene. At 12:01 a.m., movie theaters will release "New Moon," the next film in the "Twilight" series. Anxious viewers will finally discover whether mortal Bella Swan will choose Jacob's werewolf den over Edward's sparkly coffin. Clearly, creatures of the night have returned to societal consciousness.

As a testament to their adaptability, vampires are front and center on the pop-culture stage. Television shows such as "True Blood" and "The Vampire Diaries" feature titillating exchanges between fanged supermodels. Movies like "Twilight," "Let the Right One In" and "Blood: The Last Vampire" explore vampirism through teenage, independent and gore-tinted lenses,

Of course we love vampires. We’re only human

from Times Online

Dracula has moved on. Today’s fang-baring bloodsucker is more a Jane Austen romantic hero than a Hammer horror villain

The release tomorrow of New Moon, the second film in the phenomenally successful Twilight saga, confirms that 2009 has truly been the year of the vampire. The non-beating heart of Edward Cullen, Twilight’s beautiful vampire hero, has set pulses racing all over the world. At the London premiere last week, Robert Pattinson, who plays Edward, was greeted by thousands of girls screaming not because they fear that they’ll die if he bites them, but because they know they’ll die if he doesn’t.

Cold-blooded creatures have never been so hot.New Moon comes at the end of a long list of vampire films that have filled the cinemas this year. Thirst, a Korean tale of a vampire priest, won the Jury Prize at Cannes. Let the Right One In, the Swedish cult hit about a vampire girl and the boy who lives next door, was released to critical raves in April. It’s now being remade in the US.

HBO 25% off "Friends25" code

True Blood Speakers needed

True Blood and the West?

Speaking of the Undead in the West, the CFP below for HBO’s True Blood series reminded me that there were western elements in the most recent season of the series. Although, with its primary Louisiana setting, True Blood seems mostly to draw on southern regionalism, vampire Bill and human (or mostly human) Sookie made a side trip to Texas as part of season two’s story arc, where they had an encounter with anti-vampire religious militants, and there were quite a few vampires here and there displaying a distinct cowboy aesthetic in their dress sense. That foray into western space might be interesting to examine in terms of western genre as well.

The Call For Papers:

True Blood ( PCA/ACA, 3/31 – 4/3, Submission Deadline: 12/15)

The Vampire in Literature, Culture and Film area of the Popular Culture Association is seeking papers for the Joint National Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association Conference to be held Wednesday, March 31st to Saturday, April 3rd, 2010 in St. Louis.

Papers which cover any aspect of the HBO True Blood series or the Charlaine Harris Sookie Stackhouse books are sought for presentation. Papers should be limited to a reading time of 15-20 minutes (3 person panels allow for 20 minute papers while 4 person panels allow for 15 minute papers; panels will be formed no later than January 2010 in order to provide panelists ample time to adjust their presentation time).

If you want to form your own panel of 3 or 4 presenters unified around a particular theme or work, please send panel proposals along with brief abstracts of each paper, each paper’s title, and contact information for each presenter in addition to designating one presenter as the Panel Chair. Discussion panels of 4-6 participants each are also encouraged.

All presenters must be (or become) members of the PCA or ACA and must register for the conference. Membership and registration information will be sent upon presentation acceptance. Please note that paper acceptance obligates participants to present the paper at the conference. To have your proposal considered for presentation, please send a 250-350 word abstract by December 15, 2009, complete with your name, affiliation, and contact information to either:

Stephen Moyer: VMan Vamp

True Blood star Stephen Moyer sizzles in Issue #16 of VMan magazine.

The 40-year-old British actor spoke about what he did on vacation, escapism, what he’d love to do next with fiancee and co-star Anna Paquin

On his vacation: “I’ve been out at the beach surfing, skateboarding, running around with the dog. I got out of Bill’s vibe.”

On escapism: True Blood is the apex of a pop-culture crazy for vampires. It’s people having no money and choosing to spend it on things that are truly escapist. There’s nothing more escapist than our show.”

On what he’d love to do with Anna in the future: “I love working with her and I’ve wanted to direct her for ages.”

VMan is on newsstands tomorrow (November 17)!
