Five things about True Blood author Charlaine Harris

True Blood is so addictive that I felt quite bereft when the last series finished. The wait for season three (which airs in the US on June 13) became more bearable once I’d discovered Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse novels, which are the source material for the series.

True Blood’s scriptwriters haven’t stuck religiously to the books. They’ve invented characters, introduced new storylines and altered plots, but essentially they inhabit the same universe (or Sookieverse, as it’s known to fans) as the books. It’s hard to judge the books objectively. My reading experience was coloured by memories of the TV show; there’s no disentangling the two. As I read it was HBO’s characters I was seeing in my mind’s eye, which left me with a curious false memory – I kept thinking I’d been watching the show, when I’d merely been reading.
