Klaveno makes bad look good as evil Lorena on 'True Blood'

Wow, what a, um, witch.
Well, in this case, a vampire, actually.
True Blood actress Mariana Klaveno plays one of the most despicable characters on television as the centuries-old Lorena, who has a thing for her undead progeny and some serious jealousy issues.
"She's not the most likable character," Klaveno concedes. But, "I'm not as evil as Lorena. I know some people have a hard time making that distinction between myself and the character. I get recognized everywhere I go, so I think that just is a testament to how popular the show is. But luckily, nobody has booed or hissed or come at me with a stake. Everyone has been very lovely and warm and excited to talk with somebody from the show."

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE Shape Shifting Sam Trammell Is Full of Surprises

The down-home, all-American guy that everyone thinks they’ve come to know has a complexity beneath the surface that few would expect. Sam Trammell and his alter-ego, “True Blood”’s Sam Merlotte, have a lot in common in this regard. Merlotte manages to keep a low profile as the owner of the neighborhood saloon in the fictional Louisiana town of Bon Temps, closely guarding his true nature as a shape-shifter, a creature capable of transforming into any animal he sees. Trammell is a talented, charismatic television actor on a hit show, who surfs and plays guitar — and is also a classical pianist who graduated from Brown University with a degree in semiotics and spent a year in Paris studying French philosophy. “Strictly speaking, it’s the study of signification,” he explains of semiotics during our meeting at a West Hollywood cafe. “The process of how things represent other things. Signs. If you do a really pure semiotical study, it’s very linguistic; it’s a lot about language but it’s also interdisciplinary.” He discusses how Freud, psychoanalysis, Marx and Engels, and feminist and film theories are all tied in with this field, and he touches on concepts of physics that leave us compelled to google and reexamine Einstein’s theory of relativity. Trammell is full of surprises.

BLOODlust: S:3 Ep:6 recap/review

Michele " MaryAnn "Forbes 'True Blood' hits DVD

Popular culture is loaded with socio-political meaning, intended or otherwise. When actress Michelle Forbes is involved, it is often intended -- for the better. With her keen intellect and passion about politics and society, Forbes responds with enthusiasm to roles that offer layers of meaning. Even when vampires and serial killers are involved.

"It is never," she says from her Los Angeles home, "just a TV show." Her favourite small-screen, big-idea credits range from Star Trek: The Next Generation through Battlestar Galactica to Homicide: Life on the Streets, In Treatment, True Blood and Durham County. "In this day and age, television and film has such a massive impact on us."

What kicks off our conversation is the recent DVD release of two of these potent TV series. Both feature the strikingly handsome, 45-year-old Forbes as a second-season guest star.

One is the American-made True Blood, Alan Ball's lurid cult hit starring Anna Paquin. Vampires rule the sultry, southern U.S. town of Bon Temps. Metaphors abound, as always in vampire lore. Warner Home Video released True Blood: The Complete Season Two on DVD and Blu-ray May 25.

Go Ask Dallas: What does True Blood's Alan Ball mean when he says they are breaking a script?

Dear Dallas
Alan Ball said in a recent interview that he and writers were breaking the scripts for season 4.
What the heck does that mean?

Thanks, R

Dear R
I love when we learn something in our True Blood fandom . Here is what wikipedia defines " breaking a script" I guess this means they a pretty far along with having the season ready for filming which I believe will start in November.
Great question

"Ball and his writing crew are currently breaking stories for season 4." From Comic Con

Breaking down the script
The process of breaking down the script occurs after the producer reads through the screenplay once. Then he or she goes back and marks certain elements that need to be taken care of before production, or even before pre-production can begin.

Marking 1/8's
Each scene, as per slug line, is measured into 1/8's of a page by its number of inches. Most pages of a screenplay are eight inches, so each inch is an 1/8, even if a page exceeds eight inches. The number of 1/8's is then marked in the top left corner of the scene, and circled. If a scene lasts longer than eight 1/8's, it is converted to 1. So, a scene lasting twelve 1/8's is marked 1 4/8.

Marking elements
To ease future production, an assistant director marks the elements found in each scene. This process repeats for each new scene. By the end, the producer will be able to see which scenes need which elements, and can begin to schedule accordingly. The film industry has a standard for color coding:
Element color codes

Element Shape or color Description
Cast Red Any speaking actor
Extra (Atmosphere) Green Any extra or group of extras needed for the background.
Extra (Silent bits) Yellow Any extra needed to perform specifically, but has no lines.
Stunts Orange Any stunt that may require a stunt double, or stunt coordinator.
Special Effects Blue Any special effect required.
Props Purple All objects important to the script, or used by an actor.
Vehicles/Animals Pink Any vehicles, and all animals, especially if it requires an animal trainer.
Sound Effects/Music Brown Sounds or music requiring specific use on set. Not sounds added in during post.
Wardrobe Circle Specific costumes needed for production, and also for continuity if a costume gets ripped up, or dirtied throughout the movie.
Make-up/Hair Asterisk Any make-up or hair attention needed. Common for scars and blood.
Special Equipment Box If a scene requires the use of more uncommon equipment, (e.g. crane, underwater camera, etc.).
Production Notes Underline For all other questions about how a scene will go, or confusion about how something happens.

Denis O'Hare - Exclusive AP-RED Interview with True Blood's "Russell"

'True Blood' star loves being 'Magister'

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - The excellent and omnipresent actor Zeljko Ivanek certainly inspires fear as “the magister” on the vampire series True Blood.
“It’s fun to play power,” Ivanek said at the Television Critics Association tour.
“It’s just fun to walk into a situation where everyone has to kind of turn to you. And how that plays out in the end, it’s actually really cool.”
So when are fans of True Blood going to find out how the magister’s current story-line is going to “play out in the end”, as Ivanek put it?
“I think you’ll find out very, very soon, is all I can say about that,” Ivanek said. “I think (in the episodes that air) this week or next week, all that will be clarified.”
True Blood airs Sundays on HBO Canada.
Ivanek also will be starring the fall in the new series The Event on NBC and Citytv.

‘True Blood’s Denis O’Hare: ‘Things Start To Go Really Crazy’

King Russell is the diabolical, entertaining villain who is shaking up this season of ‘True Blood.’  So far Mississippi’s vampire king has managed to tear Bill (Stephen Moyer) and Sookie (Anna Paquin) apart, get Eric to do his bidding, and embarked on an ambitious plan to attack the human race with the help of a V-addicted pack of werewolves.  Denis O’Hare, an acclaimed theater actor who also plays Judge Abernathy on ‘The Good Wife,‘ is really sinking his teeth into the meaty role. He shared a secret about Russell’s opulent mansion, teases a scandalous upcoming sex scene and hints that soon the king’s reign will be challenged.
Is it good to be the king?
It’s good to be the king.  I can do whatever I want to.  I have a great house.  I get to order people around.  I eat who I want to. It’s fantastic.

True Blood Recipes: Hoyt's favorite biscuits from Summer

Ingredients

* 2 cups all-purpose flour
* 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
* 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
* 2 tablespoons butter, cold
* 1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening, cold
* 1 cup milk

Directions

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Mix well. Add 1 tablespoon of the cold butter and the cold shortening and work it into the dry ingredients, using your hands, until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the milk. The dough will be sticky. Dust your work surface with some flour. Turn the dough onto the floured surface. Gently fold each side toward the center. Pick up the dough and dust the work surface with additional flour. Return the dough to the floured surface and fold each side towards the center again. Turn the dough over and press it out to 1-inch thickness. Cut the biscuits, straight down, do not twist the cutter, with a 2 1/4-inch round cookie cutter. Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter and add to a 10-inch round cake pan. Place the biscuits in the pan, turning once (to coat both sides with butter), about 1/4-inch apart. Let the biscuits rest for 15 minutes before baking. Bake until golden brown, about 15 minutes.

E-books are great -consider a Kindle at this price!

Of course, Dallas LOVES her iPad ( I really don't go anywhere without it) but if you don't have a e-book reader yet-this is a really good deal ! I had the pleasure of sititng next to Charlaine Harris at dinner recently and showed her the ipad and her web page and a sookie books on the iPad.

If you buy lots of books you will quickly save the cost of the kindle ( e-books are max $9.99) and you can download them instantaneously and carry hundreds around with you!

Good interview.. ( they are far and few between!)

True Blood: Here come the witches!

If you have not read Sookie book 4 ( Dead to the World) or haven't read it in a while you NEED to read ahead now ! You know how Ball began bringing in book 3 during True Blood Season 2 you can just expect he will do it again now!

I think we need to concentrate on Hallow and how she might be connected to Yvetta  !
WHAT ???!!!!

Hallow, and her brother threatened Eric that they would curse him by turning Fangtasia's alcoholic drinks bad, and cause patrons to trip over the dance floor and sue them, which would badly affect Fangtasia’s revenues. Pam tells Sookie that a witch had come with a message from Hallow saying that Hallow lusted for Eric and asked him if he would entertain her for seven nights, she would only demand a fifth of his business, rather than half. Eric had refused and suddenly vanished from the office where they were discussing this offer. Eric says he does not remember anything and that he was born the moment he was running down the road. Pam and Chow asked Sookie to keep Eric safe while they solve the problem with the witches.
Later Sookie learns through Holly Clearly (another waitress at Merlotte's) that this coven of witches have a lot of power that they are willing to use for evil, that they drink vampire blood and that they are werewolves as well. Holly also tells Sookie that this new coven has called all local witches and Wiccans to join them. Furthermore, Sookie learns that her brother, Jason, is missing and starts looking for him. Sookie informs Alcide Herveaux of the existence of this werewolves-witch coven in Shreveport and heads to Hotshot to speak to Crystal Norris (a were-panther) as she was the last person Jason was seen with.

Vampire Novelist Anne Rice Quits Christianity 'Interview With a Vampire' author turned off by church

Novelist Anne Rice has quit Christianity for the second time. The Interview With a Vampire author—who had renewed her Catholic faith in recent years and penned a spiritually-themed memoir—says that while her faith in Christ is still strong, she's been turned off Christianity by the church's attitudes on social issues, by Catholic sex scandals, and the excommunication of a nun who approved a life-saving abortion.
"In the name of Christ, I quit Christianity and being a Christian," Rice wrote on her Facebook page. "I came to the conclusion that if I didn't make this declaration, I was going to lose my mind," she tells AP. Rice, who's currently working on her Songs of the Seraphim fiction series, says she has no plans to return to writing about vampires, although she's a big fan of True Blood and the Twilight movies.

Of Werewolves, Dog Fighting, and Lady GagaTaking stock of True Blood at the midseason mark.

Could Sookie Stackhouse be an alien? Is Jesus Satan? Is it proper etiquette for football players to pat each other on the rear end even when one is humping a girl in the back seat of a car? Some questions about True Blood do not have simple answers. But since it's the midway point of Season 3, it's a good time to take stock and see what we do know.

Will werewolves finally get more respect?
No way. So far, they appear to be, for the most part, easily manipulated, flannel-loving thugs. Vampires quote Dorothy Parker ("And I am Marie of Romania") and listen to Billie Holliday, while werewolves look like the kind of rabid mob you might find at a Soundgarden concert. The mountainous Alcide has the most potential as a character, but considering how little the forever shirtless Joe Manganiello has been allowed to do this season, the actor might as well have studied acting at Gold's Gym. It's not just that the werewolves lack charisma. On a show where every vampire brings weighty metaphorical baggage, the lycanthropes still seem thin on allegory. Recalling the ideas of that "preening fool Adolf," Russell suggests that vampires are the real master race, but what does that make the werewolves? They don't look like Jews to me.

'True Blood' Fans Can Win A Walk-On Role!

Let's face it — after two and a half seasons of watching the crazy supernatural shenanigans going down between Sookie Stackhouse, her peers at Merlotte's, her rivals at Fangtasia and far beyond, most "True Blood" fans can agree that visiting the fictional town of Bon Temps isn't exactly the most enticing prospect. But how about visiting the set of "True Blood" and getting to meet your favorite actors like Alexander Skarsgård, Stephen Moyer and more — is that something you're interested in?
If so, you're in luck. "True Blood" fans can bid on an opportunity to win a non-speaking, featured "extra" walk-on role on the HBO series. Additionally, whoever wins the featured walk-on role can bring a guest of their choosing to the set. Better still? All proceeds go to a very noble cause!

‘Blood’ brother HBO bites on fan feedback, hires Joe Manganiello as regular for hit series

When Joe Manganiello was cast as the werewolf Alcide for the third season of HBO’s “True Blood,” he had two months to prepare before he’d be required to take off his shirt on camera.

He immediately began exercising with the same trainer who got Hugh Jackman in shape for the 2000 film “X-Men.”

“I was on a strict diet, and I worked out twice a day, six days a week, to make sure I was in peak form by the time filming rolled around,” Manganiello told the Herald in a telephone interview last week.

He kept up that grueling regimen for five months.

“It was a lot of work. It was like having a full-time job on the side while I’m actually working my real full-time job.”

The dedication paid off. HBO announced last week that Manganiello will be a regular on the fourth season of “True Blood.” The Pittsburgh native also is on the cover of the August issue of Muscle & Body magazine.

TV Guide- True Blood Exclusive: Who Will Sookie Choose?

She can read minds, sling beers and toss back shots with werewolves. Not to mention work a pair of short-shorts across two states. No wonder True Blood's Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) is the dream girl for three guys who put the super in supernatural.

So far she's been loyal to her first love, Civil War-era vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), but a heartrending breach of trust will soon tear the two apart, leaving an opening for calculating Viking bloodsucker Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård) and sensitive werewolf bodyguard Alcide Herveaux (Joe Manganiello).

“True Blood” Sucker Punch: Season 3, Ep. 6

Mark Blankenship gives us his "'Sucker Punch"  for this week's True Blood episode!

What a difference a year makes, you guys. Around this time last season, True Blood and I were in a fight. The turgid Maryann business was driving me crazy, the subplot in Dallas felt disconnected from everything else… it was rough. Now, however, the show and I have more than made up. We’re thinking about moving in together. Because seriously… the series is having its best run of episodes ever.

Case in point: “I Got a Right to Sing the Blues.” An exceptional hour of television—written by Alan Ball and directed by John Dahl—it hurls scene after scene at my gut, my heart, and my brain. In fact, so many moments strike me so deeply that I’m hard-pressed to anoint just one Sucker Punch. But since they don’t pay me the big blogger bucks to be wishy-washy, I’ll make a choice.

Before I do, however, let me ask you this: Have you noticed that most of the action is unfolding at Russell’s Mississippi estate? Every room  has its own drama, from Franklin and Tara: Totes in Love in the upstairs bedroom to Stealing Daddy’s Crown in the basement. Meanwhile, the slave quarters have become Lorena and Bill’s own Grand Guignol theater, and the manicured grounds are being prowled by werewolves

Photo Flashback! The Stage Roots of True Blood's Truly Talented Cast

What a fun article from Broadway.com

It’s always fun to spot a favorite stage actor in the movies or on TV. And in the case of HBO’s hit vampire series True Blood, stage vets are everywhere! Given the fact that show creator Alan Ball began his career as a playwright, it’s not really surprising that so many theatrically trained performers have taken up residence in the Bon Temps bayou—and in this new feature, we’ve gathered production shots of 10 vamps and shape-shifters (and the people who love them) as we enjoy seeing them: live and on stage!

Anna Paquin
You know that True Blood’s fearless heroine Sookie Stackhouse was one of the youngest Oscar winners ever in real life (for 1993’s The Piano). But Anna Paquin is also a skilled stage actress, as she proved in a Drama Desk Award-nominated off-Broadway debut as a baby-faced serial killer in 2001’s The Glory of Living (pictured above, with Jeffrey Donovan). She went on to co-star in Neil LaBute’s The Distance from Here and was terrific opposite former flame Kieran Culkin in After Ashley.

Recap: True Blood, season 3, episode 6 – ‘I Got A Right To Sing The Blues’

Becca's amazing recap is up on Toronto's National Post!

Warning: All recaps may contain spoilers from episodes-to-date.
Promise: Recaps will never contain spoilers from upcoming episodes.

The writers are really working overtime this season to show us what vampires are capable of, and to what degree Bill differs from them in deed and action. Was this a direction in which they always planned to head? Or are they cashing in all their cable chips — this episode is particularly gory — to ensure that no one ever again compares their vampires to Twilight or The Vampire Diaries? Whatever the reason, this season bares little resemblance to the previous two. Better, faster, stronger, I say.

• The contrast between Lorena’s fixation with Bill and Sookie’s genuine affection for him is, for me, one of the strongest episode arcs of the series to date. Lorena is charged with the task of killing Bill on Russell’s orders. She produces an arsenal of weapons that would make Dexter envious, and makes us wonder, if we ever did, just how vile she really is. There were at least three opportunities to flash back to Lorena’s past. Hopefully, we’ll get to see her before and at the time she was made. Bill remains the voice of reason even as she carves him to shreds. She accuses him of never embracing their nature, and we can’t help but think that she doesn’t mean all the nature of all vampires, but theirs as a couple. Bill says he wishes to be dead so he can truly be free of his disease. When Debbie and Coot come in and feed off a weakened Bill, Lorena looks on in partial horror, perhaps glimpsing the hell she used to visit upon her victims when Bill was a more agreeable progeny. In his death, she will be alone.

• I really liked Sookie this episode. A lot. For once, I didn’t mind

Kiss of the Vampire: A Close look at a Classic Horror Movie

See why you never break down in the woods! See why you never stay at the creepy inn! See why you never, ever, go up to the castle! See..." Kiss of the Vampire (1963)
Who? Director: Don Sharp.
Producer: Anthony Hinds.
Screenplay: John Elder.
Cast: Clifford Evans, Edward de Souza, Noel Willman, Jennifer Daniel, Barry Warren, Brian Oulton, Noel Howlett, Jacquie Wallis, Peter Madden, Isobel Black, Vera Cook, John Harvey.
How? Hammer's follow-up to Dracula (1958)  and Brides of Dracula (1960) was such a success on both sides of the Atlantic that James Carreras quickly put in motion with Universal plans for a Dracula 3. Anthony Hinds was tasked not only with producing the film, but also with writing a screenplay, which he did so under his usual John Elder pseudonym. The eventual result, however, was far removed from the previous Dracula pictures and Kiss would become a stand-alone vampire film in its own right. Rather than use Terence Fisher (whose last three Gothics had fared poorly at the box-office to direct, Hinds brought in a completely new face - the Australian Don Sharp (who would later go on to direct The Devil Ship Pirates (1964) and Rasputin (1966) for Hammer). Sharp and Hinds cast Clifford Evans from Curse of the Werewolf (1961), Edward de Souza from Phantom of the Opera (1962), Hammer newcomers Noel Willman and Jennifer Daniel (who would both feature only once more for Hammer in The Reptile (1966)), and Barry Warren (later in Devil-Ship Pirates (1964) and Frankenstein Created Woman (1967)) for the film. After the usual struggles with the censors over the sex and violence in the draft screenplay, shooting took place at Bray Studios and on location in Black Park.

True Blood teaches us how to talk dirty vampire style

The great Meredith of "Talk Blood Radio"  fame gives us the "Pros and Cons"  from Ep 6

Blood poured from the skies in Sunday night's episode of True Blood. And we also got to learn what kind of dirty talk turns vampires on. No surprise here - it's graphic blood whispering. Watch! What did we learn? That Denis O'Hare is a gosh darn delight. His take on the King of Mississippi is award winning. Seriously.
Side note: I'm beat as hell from Comic Con, so if this True Blood recap starts to detour down into the black abyss of insanity that I'm living in right now, apologies. I will be back in better form next week. But enough about me - let's talk about Debbie Pelt's v-juice bloodgasm, self stroking, and rub downs.

Pro: A slo-mo glide into the mansion. TENSION!!!!!

Pro: Talbot's response to the King's big "Bill's a liar," reveal: "Noooo." Nice Mean Girls moment Talbolt. But of course this is immediately eclipsed when he and Sookie shriek exactly the same way, though naturall for different reasons. I imagine that banister was from the Queen-of-such-and-such-a-thing-that-is-expensive-he's-a-gay-vampire-he-likes-antiques-get-it?

True Blood Inside the Episode – I Got A Right to Sing The Blues Episode 3.06

Go Ask Dallas: What card game is Eric playing with Talbot in last night's True Blood Episode ?

Dallas

What card game is Eric playing with Talbot in last night's True Blood Episode ?
Thanks, T

Oh, T - Dallas loves a mystery but this was kind of easy
The scene dialogue is :

E-Hey, wait a minute. That's not how you play Kaiserspiel.
T-Kaiserspiel? We're playing Karnoffel.
E- Oh. I'm sorry.
E- Wow. I haven't played this game in centuries.
T-Russell taught me this game when I was still human.

So its  Kaiserspiel and Karnöffel - Karnoffel is the older game , here are what the cards look like and it uses a slate to keep score on - do you see it on the table?

Kaiserspiel

This game is a direct descendant of Karnöffel, one of the oldest card games known. Karnöffel was referred to as early as 1426 and was the subject of a many sermons and satirical writings in the following centuries. It may appear that most of its dreadfulness lies in the level of anarchy of the play - you can play any card you like to each trick, and can talk as much as you like about what cards you have and what you want your partner to do. In the 15th century what was apparently more shocking was the anarchic card order, taken as symbolising a disruption of the status quo, with the king being beaten by low cards, the Pope (6) beaten by the Under-knave, and special privileges given to the Devil (7).

The modern game of Kaiserspiel (often known as Kaiserjass, though it is not really has nothing to do with Jass games) is played in a small area around Stans and in the Engelberg valley, in Canton Nidwalden, south of Luzern in Switzerland. Of the surviving members of the Karnöffel family, this is the closest to the original game. The cards used are similar to the standard Swiss Jass pack, but the suits contain 3, 4, and 5 and not 8 or 9 (all the 8's and 9's should be removed from the pack before playing).

The Players
The game is played with fixed partnerships; when there are four players you sit opposite your partner as in Bridge. It is also possible for six to play; the partnerships then consist of teams of three, sitting alternately.
Each team elects its captain, and the scoring slate is placed on the table between the two captains.
The Object of the Game
The game is of the trick taking type, with trumps, but trumps had not been invented in their modern form when this game was developed, so they behave rather oddly. By the time the play of the hand starts, each player will have five cards, and the object is to win three of the five tricks. The value of the hand depends on how much betting there has been, and the winners score some number of points. The first side to get to an agreed number of points (often 101) wins.

KARNOFFEL-Karnöffel is a card game which probably came from the upper-German language area in Europe in the first quarter of the 15th century. It first appeared "listed in a municipal ordinance of Nördlingen, Bavaria, in 1426 among the games that could be lawfully played at the annual city fête[1]. This makes the game the oldest identifiable European card game in the history of playing cards.

True Blood: Even Junkies Got A Right To Sing The Blues

Jef has his column up - don't forget to listen to us talk about this episode last night on Talk Blood on Blogtalk Radio, the podcast available now link on right !

We're halfway to the end of the third season of True Blood, and the question that is starting to rise is, "Can other people be an addiction?"

We have all, in the throes of love said that we can't live without someone. That without them we are just a shell empty of all life and meaning. But what happens when that is actually true? Could you imagine heroin with sentience or cocaine with the ability to hate and manipulate?
Addiction already brings low the most powerful of wills, and the drugs that are its source are as mindless as viruses. When another person serves the same function as smack to a junkie, then you may have to compete against a drug that is actively working against you.
Everyone's a damn junkie this week. It's like Near Dark meets Trainspotting.
Insane vampire Franklin Mott (James Frain) is freebasing Sookie's best friend Tara (Rutina Wesley), and plans to make her his vamp wife. Gothtopia had just taken his young daughter out of the room when he heard the sound of Tara chewing a hole in Franklin, drinking his blood for the superpowers it bestows, and then beating his head into a vaguely cat-turdlike shape with a mace.
Meanwhile, Sookie (Anna Paquin) finds her lover Vampire Bill (Stephen Moyer) being killed Audtion-style by his sire and former girlfriend Lorena (Mariana Klaveno) on the orders of the vampire king of Mississippi. It takes forever because Bill is, by her own admission, her drug of choice. She is thoroughly addicted to him, and has been for a century. No junkie torches their stash on purpose, and we get to watch her cry blood tears over the thought of no more fix forever

True Blood Recipes: Melinda Micken's Corn Fritters

*remember the secret is to fry them in bacon grease!

  • 15 oz can corn (drain and reserve juice)
  • 2 medium eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Bacon grease or margarine for frying
Drain the liquid from the the canned corn. Measure 1/4 cup of it, and discard the rest. In a medium sized bowl combine the corn juice you’ve just measured and the eggs. Use a whisk to beat them smooth. Add the salt, flour, baking powder and sugar. Mix really well, until there are no lumps. Add the drained corn and mix again. Heat about 2 tablespoons of bacon grease or margarine in a large iron skillet over medium high heat. When the fat is hot, it’s time to drop in the fritters. I drop about 1/4 of a cup of batter for each fritter, cooking about 3 or 4 together in the same pan. Fry them just like pancakes, turning them, after the under side is crispy brown. They cook a little slower than pancakes, because they are thicker. After they have browned on both sides, transfer them to a plate to keep warm. Add more fat to the pan as necessary. This recipe makes about 8 or 9 fritters.

True Blood Music : Hell's Bells ! Cary Ann Hearst sounded great last night !

**This is the song that you hear over last night's closing credits!

Local artist Cary Ann Hearst's track 'Hells Bells' featured on True Blood Local singer/songwriter Cary Ann Hearst's track "Hells Bells" played during the credits of HBO's Sunday night smash hit True Blood.

Hearst, who travels the country playing her own brand of country that would turn any country hater into a fan (me), will be playing at The Tin Roof on July 29th. With a voice reminiscent of Wanda Jackson and Loretta Lynn and a stage presence that'll have you hooked from the opening chord, you may as well just go ahead and start telling your friends you'll be at the show.

To listen to more of Hearst's solo recordings, here's a link to her earlier album Dust and Bones which is damn near perfect. Hearst also plays with her husband, Michael Trent in their other project called Shovels & Rope.

True Blood : Do do that voodoo that you do so well

Blog reader JeremyofKansas weighs in with some info on on the scene ffrom last nights TB when we find that Jesus sure knows lots about Voodo gods....
**Dallas wonders if Jesus knew Miss Jeanette !

Voodou and Santeria are two distinctly related religions, however they are also very, very different. They share the core belief though- a monotheistic belief in a distant creator deity who is responsible for existence, who is in all essence of the word God. However, to take care of the day to day existence there are beings who are responsible for the every day things. in Santeria they call them Orisha's, in Voodou they call them Lwa's. Although the beings in question are called different things, and often times completely different beings, they share essentially the same general purpose. Baron Samedi is a Voodou Lwa of death- probably the most famous of their Lwa's. One of the Orisha's we saw tonight was Shango, an Orisha of thunder. Again- to correct your guest, these are NOT gods. Not at all. Powerful begins, absolutely- deities they are not. There is no belief in these two religious movements in other gods other than the one god.

Each religion has its basis in African religions that slaves brought from Africa with them. Santeria is now a South American religion, Voodou is essentially the state religion of Haiti and practice heavily in Lousiana. Santeria is different from Voodou in one aspect though- that it is completely syncretized with Catholicism. In order to be a practitioner of Santeria you will believe in the Bible, believe in Jesus, Mary, the devil, the whole shabang. Voodou is also practiced by many, many practitioners in a syncrotized method. You can practice Voodou and still believe in Jesus, Mary, the Saints, etc. However, you can also practice Voodou and not in any way be a Catholic and not believe in any of those practices and it would still be perfectly acceptable. When you do practice this syncratization what happens is that the Orisha's and Lwa's become interchangable with the Catholic Saints. In Voodou for instance, Papa Legba(The gatekeeper between our world and the spirit world/world of the Lwa's) would become the essentially the same being as St. Peter.

A lot of folks in chat were trying to call Jesus a Wiccan- because you know, we worship Orisha's(not). Some we're describing him as a witch even. However, Santerian's that do practice any sort of magic wouldn't look at it probably as witchcraft. With the Catholic connections I think they'd look down on the concept of witchcraft- or define the practice in such a manner to think of it as being evil. That's not to say they don't practice some sort of magic- or that Jesus wouldn't.

I'm not telling you this to talk down to you or anything- just blame it on the fact that I'm a college student at the University of Kansas with 75 credits and that I'm majoring in the academic study of religion!

Jesus may be a believer in a Santeria, he may well be a supernatural, and it's possible the True Blood creators are doing something unusual with him and perhaps fictionializing the Santerian religion in an unfactual manner(This seriously makes me gag/semi-offends me)- thus far though they've tried to mirror our world with the TB world in a way that makes everything relevant save for the actual supernaturals. I suspect they'd keep the practice of Santeria in such a way to as mirror the real world beliefs. Maybe this will give you a little more insight to Jesus and his motives as some more hints and bread crumbs are dropped along the way!

Hope you enjoy my academic nerd rage! :)

**In Vodou, (the Voodoo religion), Bacalou is a feared loa (or spirit), represented by a skull and crossbones
