Five Best Vampire Book Series

What are your 5 favorites ?

(With a full pun intended), it is the dead of winter and it is time to curl up with a good vampire book. Everyone seems to love vampires. From the publication of Dracula in 1897 by the Irish author, Bram Stoker, vampires have continued to enthrall people. These undead creatures of the night are seductive, dangerous hunters that prey upon our imaginations and inspire many great tales. Here are five of the best series of books, based upon vampires, that are available today:

number1The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice
Possibly the most famous series of vampire novels in existence, Anne Rice is responsible for what most people today recognize as the traits of vampires. The twelve part series revolves around Lestat de Lioncourt, an eighteenth century vampire and nobleman. The series has sold more than 80 million copies worldwide and has been made into two movies. This is the only one of the vampire series that is taken from the male perspective. It is widely popular amongst adults and contains mature content.

number2The Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris
This series, sometimes called the Sookie Stackhouse books, is based in Louisiana and is based on the perspective of the protagonist, Sookie, a telepath. In the series, which is the basis of the award winning HBO series, True Blood, vampires have been among humankind for centuries, but have just recently “come out of the closet”. There are currently ten books in the series and Charlaine Harris announced at the 2009 ComicCon that three more books have been contracted. The series is aimed at adult readers for mature content and violence. These are extremely easy to read and you’ll be through the entire series before you know it.

number3Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter by Laurell K. Hamilton
This series of books follows a parallel universe where vampires, shapeshifters, and other supernatural creatures exist. The main character, Anita Blake, is a strong female necromancer who makes money by bringing crime victims back from the dead to question them for legal purposes. She is also a licensed vampire hunter who seeks out the undead to end their murders of human beings. This series currently has sixteen books and has been made into a comic book series through Marvel Comics. It is aimed at more mature readers due to some adult content.

number4House of Night by P.C. and Kristin Cast
This new vampire series is following on the coattails of the extremely successful Twilight series and has plans on being in twelve to fifteen parts. Currently, there are six books printed. It follows the adventures of Zoey Redbird, a sixteen year old native American fledgling vampire who goes to a boarding school for vampires in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The books are aimed at young adults and has spent 63 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list.

number5Twilight Series by Stephenie Myers
I know I’ve shown my disdain for this series as an adult, but kids love it and if they are reading, it can’t be all that bad! This widely popular series of romantic vampire books has caused a new interest in the undead. It follows the life of Bella Swan and her vampiric boyfriend, Edward Cullen and the trials they have while dealing with werewolves and other vampires. It is told mainly from Bella’s point of view, with parts from the viewpoint of Jacob Black, a werewolf. It has sold more than 85 million copies worldwide and is most popular with teenage girls. Currently, two successful movie adaptations have been made.

Alan Ball Interview Creator of HBO’s True Blood Series

From Buzzy Media

Charlaine Harris’ “Southern Vampire” books concern the goings-on in the small town of Bon Temps, Louisiana, resident telepath waitress Sookie Stackhouse and a whole lot of supernatural beings. These creatures include vampires, who have recently revealed themselves to humans worldwide after the development of the synthetic blood substance Tru Blood. Harris’ books appeal to a wide range of readers. One of these was Alan Ball, an Oscar winner for his original screenplay for American Beauty and creator of HBO’s highly-acclaimed series Six Feet Under, which ran for five seasons.

Dead Until Dark, he says he became enthralled. “I got into Sookie and the world and the characters, and I looked forward to going to bed every night, because I knew I was going to read the book before I went to sleep, and I would tell myself, ‘Okay, I’m just going to read two chapters,’ and I would read seven. I just felt, ‘This is kind of a phenomenon.’ I read first four books, [which] at that time [was what] had been published, and I wanted more. So I called [Harris]. At that time, she had given the rights to a film producer, but those rights were set to run out in a couple of months. They ran out and I convinced her to let me take a stab at it.”
