USA Today: “17% of all book sales tracked in 2009 were related to vampires”

From Twilight Source

There’s a new article online looking at popular books in 2009, and it reveals some interesting statistics related to the Twilight saga:

We have Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight vampires to thank, in part, for the fact that at least 17% of all book sales tracked in 2009 were related to vampires (and assorted other undead creatures, including zombies) or the paranormal (including paranormal romances). That was up from 14% in 2008, which in turn was way up from 2% in 2007.

Charlaine Harris, author of the Sookie Stackhouse novels, which are the inspiration for HBO’s True Blood, had nine titles in the top 100 sellers of the year, and P.C. and Kristin Cast, the mother/daughter team who write the House of Night series, had six. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith is No. 48 on the list. Expect that trend to continue in 2010, again thanks in part to Meyer. She may not have a new book coming out (that we know of so far), but Eclipse, the movie based on the third book in the Twilight series, swoops into theaters in June, and the paperback reissue of her 2008 adult hardcover The Host is out April 13.

Interestingly, all four Twilight saga books sit at the top of USA Today’s Best-Selling Books of 2009 list.

Alan Ball Is Pro-New Blood on "True Blood"

Adding a new cast member to an already tight ensemble can be tricky stuff. Chemistry can be slow to build, storylines sometimes feel forced and viewers tend to revolt initially, preferring the stasis of the characters they've come to know and love. But fear not, "True Blood" lovers. Alan Ball wants to make sure everyone is a happy camper.

The third season of the HBO series is expected to see a major influx of new supernatural characters, including Alcide, a werewolf who complicates things with Sookie (Anna Paquin) and Bill (Stephen Moyer) and Sookie and Eric (swoon-inducing Alexander Skarsgard

Charlaine Harris: 'I'm just a gruesome person'

The author behind infectious TV series True Blood has an unpleasant past, writes Catharine Munro.

Come out of the coffin ... Charlaine Harris introduces taboo topics to the mainstream.

Draining every drop of her deep Southern cordiality, Charlaine Harris holds out on explaining exactly why her latest heroine is involved in an incestuous relationship.

The author behind the popular HBO series True Blood isn't into psychoanalysing her sexy murder mysteries, even though their kinky characters cry out for it.

But otherwise thoughtful and conventional people who have found themselves glued to the television adaptation of Harris's work might need a session or two on the couch to explain why they can't get enough of a story based on sex with vampires. Vampires are, after all, creatures who are dead.

Necrophilia and incest are not themes you would usually associate with a 58-year-old churchgoing mother of three who has lived for 20 years in the Bible-belt state of Arkansas. "I'm just a gruesome person," she says, matter-of-factly.

But there's no avoiding the contradiction between the writer and her subject matter. Speaking from her home in Magnolia, Arkansas, she is unnervingly relaxed.

Vampires would royally f-up the health care debate

From Arkansas Times

Every year, the first-year students at The Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce at the University of Kentucky are broken up into different sectors of government — Department of Defense, Department of Justice, CIA, Health and Human Services, etc — assigned a diplomatic crisis scenario, and then asked them to make suggestions in the event of that crisis.

This year, their assignment was to imagine what would happen if the scenario played out in the HBO series "True Blood" (inspired, of course, by Arkie Charlaine Harris' books) — that vampires are among us and have outted themselves to the human population — was real.

Their conclusions seem roundly smart, but also, of course, pretty hilarious.

Check out HHS "we're-screwed" response:

Vampires will not fit within current human-oriented health administrative codes and regulations because, should they be granted full citizenship, they will have access to the national health care system. Their particular strength, lifespan, and sustenance needs would not fit into normal codes, and new ones must be developed, separate from human regulations to account for vampires’ unique condition. Medicare regulations will have to be severely restricted to vampires, as their life span is known to be far longer than average unaffiliated humans. Medicaid will also require adjustments, as human diseases afflict vampires to a far lesser extent.
