Acting With Wolves: Meaty Roles That Require a Gentle Touch

Werewolf Craze Puts Shadow and His Pack in the Spotlight; 'It Felt So Primal'

LOS ANGELES—Producers on the HBO vampire series "True Blood" were in a race to finish several scenes last month. But their deadline wasn't about budgets or air dates. They needed to wrap the episodes before the wolves shed their winter coats.

"We had to work on their timeline," says executive producer Gregg Fienberg. A lighter summer coat would make the 120-pound gray wolves, cast in werewolf roles, look smaller and less menacing. "We can't suddenly have wolves that look different."

'True Blood' Wolf Joe Manganiello Is 'Overwhelmed By Fan Attention'

Of course, Alcide is hardly a new character for fans of the "Sookie Stackhouse" novels from Charlaine Harris

— those readers are already well aware of the werewolf's importance to Bon Temps' residential telepath. But did you know that it's actually the fans themselves that led to Joe's eventual casting as Alcide?

Speaking with Hollywood Crush, Joe recalled that a friend once showed him a website where fans were offering their own casting choices for several yet-to-be-cast "True Blood" characters, including Alcide. To Joe's surprise, his name was at the top of the list.

"As fans were posting pictures of who they'd hope would be cast as Alcide, some of them were posting pictures of me," he told Hollywood Crush exclusively. "That's how I found out about the books. I made sure to order the books, read them, and it looked like Alcide was described as pretty similar to me physically. I made sure I watched every episode, started bugging my agents and managers about it and that's how I wound up getting the part."

Season 3 Of HBO’s “True Blood” Will Feature The Score Of Composer, Nathan Barr

Jun 03, 2010 – Los Angeles, CA – HBO’s highly-acclaimed and ratings record-breaking drama series, TRUE BLOOD will premiere its third season on June 13th, featuring the score of composer Nathan Barr.

The award-winning composer arranges all the music, and performs the majority of the instrumental parts from his own private home studio in Topanga Canyon. “I've dusted off my dulcimer and a couple of other strange and obscure instruments that I never thought I'd have the chance to use and incorporated them into the score, giving the show some fresh musical notes while maintaining that True Blood sound,” he said.

For the upcoming season, Barr collaborated with singer-songwriter, Elvis Costello on an original Lucinda Williams track, in which he played the cello. Barr has composed the score for all three seasons of the show. Executive Producer and show creator, Alan Ball, says that Barr’s work “continually impresses and surprises me, and one of the favorite parts of my job is driving out to his studio to hear his score cues, as I know I’m always in for a treat.”

During the show’s hiatus, Nate scored THE LAST EXORCISM his third collaboration with producer, Eli Roth. Barr also scored the successful documentary, HOOD TO COAST that recently debuted to sold out audiences at the South by Southwest Festival.

Nate will be performing select tracks from the TRUE BLOOD score for an exclusive hour long concert at the Ubeda Music Festival in Spain this coming July. While the official time and date is to be announced, the concert will most likely take place on July 15, at 9:30pm at Palacio de los Dávalos (House of Towers).

Ranked as one of the top 100 grossing film composers, Nathan not only composes his own original scores, he also performs all of the instruments heard in the majority of his compositions. Skilled in writing many styles and genres ranging from orchestral to rock, Barr is known for his collection and inclusion of rare and unusual instruments from around the world, which include human bone trumpets from Tibet, dismantled pianos, a rare glass harmonica, and gourd cellos, among many others. Barr has scored more than 24 feature films to date, including Warner Bros.’ hit comedies THE DUKES OF HAZZARD and BEERFEST. TRUE BLOOD marks his debut as a composer for a full series. Nate comments, "The story-telling and the characters in True Blood are all beautifully complex which makes my job as a composer very exciting because I have such a rich world to play with thematically. Who would have thought that could be possible after last season's amazing ride?”

The new season of TRUE BLOOD premiers on Sunday, June 13 on HBO. For more information on Nathan Barr visit www.nathanbarr.com.

TheCelebrityCafe talks to Jace Everett

TheCelebrityCafe had the chance to speak with Jace Everett, writer/singer of the theme song for HBO's hit True Blood. His latest album, Red Revelations, is a smoky, searing blend of blues, country, and bourbon-flavored rock. Bluntly honest throughout the interview, the Texas-twanged singer revealed intelligent insight into life, music, and why he prefers Kierkegaard to keggers.

TCC: The intro to True Blood -- pretty intense! The imagery and your music make for a powerful ride. Are you a fan of the show?

JE: I am a fan. I thought the intro was awesome: it was ridiculous and sexy and fun. I liked it.

TCC: Since I saw in your Twitter bio that you're annoyed at being "the True Blood guy," I promise that'll be my only question about the show.

JE: (laughing) Nah, I don't mind at all being that. I was just being a prick.

TCC: Who did you listen to growing up?

JE: Oh, everybody. I'm a fan of Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Elvis..all those guys were playing at home.
