Thrilling: Some of the best mysteries of 2010 : Charlaine Harris story included !

Charlaine Harris's Delta Blues anthology makes the list

The best in crime fiction straddles the line of entertainment and social commentary -- forcing us to look at our society and, in some cases, our past. These are novels we remember long after the last chapter. Of the 200-plus novels I read during 2010, these are my favourites.

I'd Know You Anywhere by Laura Lippman (HarperCollins). The alchemy of guilt and surviving, of memory and fact surface in the relationship between predator and prey. A suburban homemaker receives a letter from her kidnapper, who's on death row. She's torn between ignoring him and finding out why she was the only teenage victim he let live.

Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin (HarperCollins). The childhood friendship between two boys, one white, one black, whose lives took vastly different directions, shows the destructive nature of gossip and racism in a gone-to-seed small town in Mississippi.
