Laurell Hamilton's Vampire Hunter heads to TV

The Independent Film Channel is teaming with Lionsgate for a TV movie based on the Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter books, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The project is the network's first-ever feature-length production and could be the basis for more Blake projects if successful.

In the books, Blake is a vampire hunter with a lousy dating life who also works as a police consultant investigating supernatural crimes. She attempts to come to terms with her own abilities, and navigate romantic and political relationships within the vampire community.

The 16-books-and-counting Blake novels by Laurell Hamilton include elements familiar to fans of True Blood (vampires are part of regular society) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer (tough young female fights supernatural forces). The project will be adapted by Glen Morgan (X-Files, Final Destination), who also serves as executive producer along with Courtney Solomon (Dungeons and Dragons). IFC is targeting the movie to its core base of men ages 18-34 and plans to air the movie next year.

"The popularity of the network in this demographic indicates that there is a clear demand for films that delve into provocative topics and nothing is more classically provocative than vampire lore," said Jennifer Caserta, executive vp and general manager of IFC. "Anita Blake fits perfectly with our successful original programming."

I knew this was in the works (there had been hints she was in talks with a network).

Are they crazy?! I certainly hope they don't make many of the books, or they'll have to hire porn stars to do those four chapter long explicit sex scenes.

Laurell K Hamilton is a nasty, rough woman, and this reflects in her writing. I certainly will not be watching.

Hmmmph....I like the books,...but...I can't see it really as a series or movie. Anonymous is right. The later books are pretty much porn. Plus I think the network might be trying to jump on the vampire band wagon.

Yummy! Of course, they will have to sanitize it for the television viewing audience, but we can only hope that they won't clean it up too much. Hmmm.... Now, the hunt begins for Jean-Claude and Richard!

Unless this is on HBO or Showtime, I can't see this translating well to television. True AB fans wont be happy with watered down versions of the book, which is what producers will have to do if the series goes on and reaches the later story lines.

I've read most of the series, but I don't like it that much. Later on I feel the books get cheap with the very explicit sex. And reading the first 3 took me FOREVER to do because I found them boring and blah.

At least I'll have another way to get my vamp fix though when this airs.

I just started reading the Anita Blake series (I'm on the second book) so though I don't love it like I do the Sookie books, I'd be interested in seeing it, especially since these books influenced Charlaine Harris in one form or another. Right now there is basically 0 romance so I wonder when it turns all hot and steamy...
