MICKEY: Since the season premiere (airing Sunday, June 14, 9 pm/ET) picks up right where we left off, the victim's identity is revealed in short order. As you might have already guessed, Season 2's first casualty is related to Tara, but not in a way that you will guess. At first blush, the significance of said death will not be apparent, but just wait! Also, a minor character's drinking problem will resurface — hilariously.

BMW Mini Launches 'True Blood' Campaign

Digital Kitchen are the guys that created the True Blood Opening From MediaPost

BMW's Mini USA division is launching a campaign aimed at vampires. Actually the effort is from HBO, and although it seems like a Mini campaign, it's really to promote the show "True Blood." The effort, for the second season of the show, extends last year's launch campaign that centered on faux ads for the eponymous blood substitute.

In the new effort, Mini is one of several real brands being pitched to vampires. The best part for Mini is that HBO is doing all the heavy lifting, including creative, media buy, and strategy. Creative launches this week lead up to the June 14th premier of the show.

The effort comprises national print, online and out-of-home outlets, with print running in US Weekly, AM New York, New York Observer and trade outlets. Ads, featuring blood-red versions of the Mini Cooper and Mini Clubman, have headlines like, "Feel the Wind in Your Fangs" and "Type GO."

Digital ads will run on Yahoo, CNN, AOL, the "True Blood" home page on HBO.com, and the show's microsites: bloodcopy.com, fellowshipofthesun.org, and americanvampireleague.com. Out-of-home placements will run in New York, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia. All of the ads contain URLs that lead consumers to HBO's "True Blood" page at HBO.com.

Other brands featured in the effort include Harley-Davidson, Gillette, Monster.com, and Geico. Kate Alini, Mini marketing communications manager, explains that HBO and Digital Kitchen, the network's agency, approached Mini a month ago. "After evaluating it, we thought it interesting, fun, and unique. They came up with the concept and were dead on and authentic with our brand identity. But it was their concept," she says.

Alini says the out-of-home ads run through June 21. As for Mini's own efforts, Alini says, economy not withstanding, the Woodcliff Lake, NJ-based company is keeping its irreverent tone, but talking more about why Mini is smart buy. "Though we never lead with that, we are focused more on the retail message but in 'Mini' way."

True Blood: Newcomers launch into rare air

From LATimes blog
'United States of Tara,' 'The Mentalist,' 'Lie to Me,' 'True Blood,' 'The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency,' and 'Eastbound & Down' are all rookie shows that have broken free of the first-season pack.

'TRUE BLOOD' SO IT'S AN ACQUIRED TASTE

When it comes to HBO's swampy Southern Goth horror story, "True Blood," about a feisty, telepathic waitress who charms the fangs off a Southern gent cum vampire with excellent sideburns, Emmy voters might not want to cry "camp" too quickly.

The Charlaine Harris book series, as re-imagined by "Six Feet Under" creator Alan Ball, is a political satire, romance and murder mystery set in a world where vampires don't need to feed on humans -- but sometimes do -- and where the buxom Sookie Stackhouse is the literal center of the action.

During the first season, she is pursued by a killer and courted by both a 173-year-old vampire named Bill and her tender boss, Sam (not a werewolf but a shape-shifter), all while having to deal with dead bodies piling up around her, the vile thoughts of her vampire-hating human clientele and a brother addicted to sex and vampire blood, a potent hallucinogen.

"It's powerful and moving and scary and completely crazy," says Anna Paquin, who says she stalked Ball for the part of Sookie. "Our show is definitely not for everyone, but all of us who work on it are obsessed."

The mix is an acquired taste, to be sure, but ratings for the show indicate a growing group of thrill seekers. According to HBO, the "True Blood" audience started small but grew throughout the season.

Chasing after the role has already paid off for Paquin. She won a Golden Globe for lead actress in January, and, unlike other Hollywood actors who feign indifference about award season, she doesn't quickly dismiss it.

"Obviously, I'm really grateful for [award season] as a concept. If I hadn't won an Oscar when I was, like, 11, I'm guessing I wouldn't have a career right now," the actress says. In 1993, she became the second youngest performer in history to win an Oscar for her portrayal of a child translating for her mute mother in Jane Campion's "The Piano."

It will likely be more of an uphill battle for "True Blood" when it comes to Emmy voters, a group long spooked by genre shows, snubbing critical favorites like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" season after season. But timing could be on its side. Season 2 premieres June 14, less than two weeks before nomination ballots are due, and the intensity hasn't let up. Sookie and her vampire suitor are now the adoptive "parents" to Jessica, the teen Bill was forced to turn into a vampire as punishment for killing another vampire.

"Trouble, as usual," Paquin says. "But if you already watch the show, you know that's going to be the least of it."

About That Vampire Blog Thing
By Gabriel Snyder

Something else you might have missed if you, like a normal person, enjoyed the Memorial Day holiday without following online media industry news: Gawker found itself in the middle of an advertising-blurring-with-editorial controversy after our sales department and HBO pretended that an advertorial blog was a Gawker editorial property.

Gawker the editorial staff and Gawker the advertising staff don't tell each other much about what they're doing. And they shouldn't. The way the media economic engine works is that the eyeballs attracted by editorial can be sold by advertising in order to pay for the editorial. It's a nice little symbiotic circle, but the key ingredient for keeping it running is to keep a bright line between the ads and edit. And clearly that wasn't the case here.

Charlaine Harris's Book Picks by Charlaine Harris

The author of the Sookie Stackhouse novels, which were the basis for the HBO series True Blood, says she didn’t soul search for four of her all-time favorite books, but shared compelling reads that have taught her a little something about writing. Her newest book, Dead and Gone was released by Ace Hardcover this month.

Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster By Jon Krakauer 368 pages. Anchor. $14.95. Into Thin Air
by Jon Krakauer

“Krakauer is such a meticulous reporter, such a skilled writer, that a person who’s never been anywhere close to a mountain…can grasp the difficulties involved in the attempt to scale Everest.”

Into Thin Air is the only book in the world that could get me onto Everest, even secondhand. I’m absolutely terrified of heights, and I’m only adventuresome on my word processor. But Krakauer is such a meticulous reporter, such a skilled writer, that a person who’s never been anywhere close to a mountain or met a mountain climber can grasp the difficulties, both physical and mental, involved in the attempt to scale Everest. The unexpected storm, combined with errors in judgment and tragic mistakes, which cost so many climbers their lives, is recounted in stark prose that conveys the horrors of that disastrous day. Krakauer spares no one, especially himself, in his account. This is an adventure book of the first quality.

Guilty Pleasures By Laurell K. Hamilton 272 pages. Jove. $4.99. Guilty Pleasures
by Laurell K. Hamilton

“The originality of Hamilton’s protagonist, who raises the dead for a living, filled me with delight when I first read Guilty Pleasures.’”

Laurell K. Hamilton’s Guilty Pleasures, the very first book in her Anita Blake series, taught me a lot. The originality of Hamilton’s protagonist, who raises the dead for a living, filled me with delight when I first read Guilty Pleasures. The book still fills me with sheer enjoyment of Hamilton’s raw talent for bringing to life a prickly, stubborn, young woman with her own unusual ability, a woman who fully inhabits a world sort of like ours, but frighteningly different. This early work is raw, quick-moving, and an attention-grabber from start to finish.

Lullaby Town: An Elvis Cole Novel By Robert Crais 352 pages. Bantam. $7.99 Lullaby Town: An Elvis Cole Novel
by Robert Crais

"I might have named any of Crais’s books, because I’m an ardent fan, but Lullaby Town is wonderful."

I’m discovering that I love books that can take me places I’ve never gone, because my third pick is going to be Robert Crais’s Lullaby Town. I might have named any of Crais’ books, because I’m an ardent fan, but Lullaby Town is wonderful. Crais’ hero, Elvis Cole, is a Los Angeles detective with a sense of humor that Crais lets us share in some of the best dialogue ever written. Peter Alan Nelson, who is as pathetic as a person as he is great as a director, hires Elvis to look for his long-lost divorced wife, Karen Shipley. Peter has his own reasons to find Karen; buried somewhere in his childish and egotistical personality is the certainty that he owes her. Because Elvis is a great detective, he does find Karen, but nothing about the situation is straightforward. Events mount inexorably to a violent climax. This is novel writing, detective branch, at its peak.

The Language of Bees By Laurie R. King 448 pages. Bantam. $25. The Language of Bees
by Laurie R. King

"I recommend the reader begin this amazing line of books with the original (in every sense) entry, The Beekeeper’s Apprentice. I guarantee if you read the first 20 pages, you’ll be hooked.

Since I’m thinking about California, Laurie R. King has popped into my mind, especially since she has a new book, The Language of Bees, in her Mary Russell series. I can hardly wait to open it, but I recommend the reader begin this amazing line of books with the original (in every sense) entry, The Beekeeper’s Apprentice. Young Mary Russell, an orphan and a misfit, stuck with living with an uncongenial woman until she comes of age, almost literally stumbles across a peculiar neighbor as she walks on the moor. In the most fabulous leap of the imagination, that neighbor is revealed to be Sherlock Holmes. In her sensitive, perceptive, prose, Laurie R. King has me utterly believing in Mary and her unusual relationship with the great detective. I guarantee if you read the first 20 pages, you’ll be hooked.

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" returning to big screen

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - A new incarnation of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" could be coming to the big screen, courtesy of the director of the original movie.

"Buffy" creator Joss Whedon isn't involved and it's not set up at a studio, but director Fran Rubel Kuzui is working on a relaunch with Vertigo Entertainment, which specializes in English-language remakes of Asian films, such as "The Grudge" and "The Departed."

While Whedon is the person most associated with the "Buffy" franchise, Kuzui and her Kuzui Enterprises have held onto the rights since the beginning, when she discovered the "Buffy" script from then-unknown Whedon. She developed the script while her husband Kaz put together the financing to make the 1992 movie, which was released by Fox.

Kuzui later helped bring back Whedon to make the TV series, which began its successful run on the WB in 1997. She received executive producer credits on "Buffy" and its spinoff, "Angel."
