Facebook Fangtasia Group Charlaine Harris Interview

Claudine Crane asks:
1. In "Fairy dust" Claude is surprised that Sookie shakes my hand and I tell him humans are too trusting. Is that the reasons why vamps don't shake hands? They are afraid of a fairy's handshake?
Charlaine:Vamps are not afraid of a fairy's handshake, but a handshake is not their custom. They consider it too human.

Pam asks:
2. Will there be any more discussion or more information about Eric's curse?
Charlaine:There will be no more discussion of the curse on Eric. I've talked about it enough.

Pam asks:
3. How come Sookie never sees ghosts of those who have died in her house? Like her Grandma and Debbie and the Weres that Eric and Bill killed?
Charlaine: Sookie doesn't see ghost.

Amelia asks:
4. Is Amelia more of a solitary witch or did she depend on her coven when she was in New Orleans?
Charlaine: Amelia did participate in her coven.

Amelia asks:
5. How well does Amelia know the Vamp and Were communities (since she does jobs for them). ie.. Did she know Sophie Ann personally or only through Hadley dating her? Had she been acquainted with Eric?
Charlaine:she did not know Sophie-Anne or Eric, and she only knows a little about the other supernatural communities.

Amelia asks:
6. Ever consider hooking Amelia and Sam up?
Charlaine: She will not hook up with Sam

Amelia asks:
7. Is Octavia's boyfriend a voodoo priest?
Charlaine: Octavia's boyfriend is another witch.

Bill asks:
8. Is Jessica going to be in the books? Will I be her sire?
Charlaine: Jessie is a show construct, and will not be in the books.

Bill asks:
9. Is Eric somewhat related to Leif Ericsson?
Charlaine: Eric is not related to Leif Ericsson.

Sookie asks:
10. In "All together dead" Pam tells Sookie about the night she was turned. She says: Eric's "last companion had struck out on her own, since children can't stay with their maker long." Does that mean there's another of Eric's childs somewhere? Will we meet her?
Charlaine:There are one or two of Eric's children left, though I don't know if we'll see them. We're more likely to see his maker.

Eric asks:
11. How did the come up with the Sookie world.
Charlaine: Eric, I built it over quite a while. I didn't realize I'd get to write another Sookie book -- it took a long time to sell the first one -- so I didn't have whole coherent world when I began writing the subsequent books.

Niall asks:
12. What is Niall real age and what is the extent of and how many supernatural abilities does he have?
Charlaine: Niall, you're almost immeasurably old and you're very powerful, though we'll never see you test the abilities you have because you mostly live in your own world.

Niall asks:
13. If you were in charge of casting who would you pick to portray Niall in True Blood and why?
Charlaine: I'd take the actor Vladimir Kulich, who sparked the character of Eric, and I'd sort of glaze him over to be Niall.

Claudine asks:
14. Why is it a big deal for Eric to fly and we all forget Bill can levitate?
Charlaine: Claudine, I have no idea, and I don't think it IS such a big deal. Flying is more useful, though.

Felicia asks:
15. What do you think of us "playing" your characters? Any advice for us?
Charlaine: Felicia, as long as you're having fun, far be it from me to protest.

Claude asks:
16. I would like to know who she would cast as Claude in True Blood?
Charlaine: Claude, I have no idea who I'd cast. Someone very body-conscious, someone who's unashamed of exhibiting that body.

Terry Bellefleur asks:
17. Early on in the series Sookie is very firmly told she would never want to meet a genie. Will we ever meet a genie? Is that what happened to Terry in the war?
Charlaine: Terry has never met a genie. I don't know if Sookie ever will.

Eric asks:
18. Does she like what the HBO series is doing with Jason's character by making him into a FOTS believer? and if so, will that story line fit into the books also? (because some of the story lines happen sooner in the series, than in the books.)
Charlaine: Eric: Yes, I like what's happening with Jason. It's logical with the storyline as they're doing it.

True Blood's Anna Paquin is 'Queen of the Night'

from out.com

Bleeding into a highly anticipated second season, True Blood, Alan Ball’s dark and drawling Southern vamp drama returns, riddled with thinly veiled metaphors for LGBT rights. On and off-screen the show’s lead vampire lover, Sookie Stackhouse, played by X-Men’s Anna Paquin, aches for the bite of her vampire lover, solves mysteries telepathically…and waits tables.

The Canadian-born, New Zealand raised Oscar winner (she won Best Supporting Actress at the ripe age of 11 for The Piano), recently chatted with Out about the new season, her uncanny ability to play metaphorically gay roles, her off-screen romance with co-star Stephen Moyer, and sweet Sookie’s newfound love of S&M.

Out: How did you get involved with True Blood?
Anna Paquin: Well, I read the pilot script and completely fell in love with it and then pursued it incredibly hard, auditioned 100 times -- I mean four or five times -- until they said yes.

Sookie initially comes across as a innocent and incredibly virtuous girl. What drew you to the role: was it that sweet nature or was it her darker moments?
Well, it’s the fact that she’s all of it [rolled into] one, because I feel like that’s real. You can be someone who’s gone through a lot of crap in your life and who has survived a lot of ups and downs and whatevers and still be someone with a positive outlook. You can be sweet and kind and treat people the way you want to be treated even if that’s not the way you’ve been treated. She’s not a victim. I love that about her, and she’s really tough -- mostly she just kicks ass.

Women Play Mostly Supporting Role Within Male-Dominated Vampire "Trend"

from Jezebel

Today's New York Times has a "Thursday Styles" section story about a "trend with teeth": Vampires.

Ruth La Ferla references True Blood and Let The Right One In and writes:

What began with the Twilight Saga, the luridly romantic young-adult series by Stephenie Meyer, followed by Twilight, the movie, has become a pandemic of unholy proportions.

For Spike's sake: Vampire lust did not "begin" with Twilight. While La Ferla acknowledges the 1983 film The Hunger, the Sookie Stackhouse books penned by Charlaine Harris, and upcoming "supernatural action film" Blood: The Last Vampire (which looks awesome) — her underlying question is: Why? Why the pop culture obsession with vampires? La Ferla gets this:

The vampire's attraction is "all about the titillation of imagining the monsters we could be if we just let ourselves go," suggested Rick Owens, a fashion bellwether whose goth-tinged collections sometimes evoke the undead. "We're all fascinated with corruption, the more glamorous the better" and, he added, with the idea of "devouring, consuming, possessing someone we desire."

I think it’s time we take a moment to remember exactly what principles this country was founded on: tolerance, liberty, and equality. I mention this not because of a sudden patriotic fever, but because it seems so evidently lacking lately. Vampires may not be “normal people” in the narrow definition of some, but we are unquestionably an ever-growing segment of the population. Put simply, even if we don’t breathe or sunbathe, that doesn’t mean we don’t deserve the same rights and protections as others.

As if this needed further demonstration, I’d like to point out that the American War for Independence was not fought by daywalkers alone. Vampires served a number of key positions and played no small part in the eventual outcome of the war that led the English to abandon our shores in the first place. This country is ours as much as anyone else’s and to treat us differently would be, well, un-American.

Okay, it’s not just that upcoming holiday that’s led me to point all this out. Perhaps coincidentally, perhaps not, recently-elected Senator David Finch has thrown his support behind State Senator Adams’ bigoted Prop 188 bill, which would require vampires to register their blood with the state and face criminal repercussions is that blood is sold (even if it’s stolen by drainers, for example).

It’s a bad idea from a misguided leader.

Vampires Are Yesterday’s News, Zombies Are The Hotties Of Tomorrow

From the frisky.com ( personally think it will be werewolves and perfect timing to meet Alcide next season in True Blood and the Club Dead scenes will rival the bar scene from Star wars !)

The front page of the latest New York Times Style section is plastered with the faces of sexy vampires. Not that vampires are not the “it” sex symbols of the moment, but whenever the Times writes about something, that thing has inevitably jumped the shark. Not that I think the blood suckers from “Twilight” are going to be disappearing any time soon, but I think vampires have reached their zenith. I wish “True Blood” many more seasons of sex and sucking, but vampire culture is past its prime. The real question is, what is the next supernatural creature millions of girls will lust after? After a thorough and exhausting inventory of the non-human hotties out there, I bring you your next fantasy.

* Wizards: Harry Potter is hardly new, and to be honest I think the whole wizard worshiping thing will only enjoy a brief spike of lust due to the upcoming movie release of “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.” Still, when Harry Potter mania hits, it hits hard. Another bonus for the magical community: the Harry Potter kids are finally of age. We might have dreamed of Daniel Radcliffe before, but it just wasn’t OK to admit since he was just a wee lad. Swoon as much as you want for now, as I predict the wizard romance will amount to little more than a summer fling.
* Werewolves: It’s almost as if the “Twilight” and “Harry Potter” peeps powwowed on scheduling release dates in order to feed our fickle fantasies. As the wizarding moon waxes and wanes in September, the movie “New Moon” rises above the stars. In a seamless transition, the Harry Potter hotties will fade into the twilight and give the werewolves their time to shine. I give the werewolves a few moons before they start to get long in the tooth. Hot though they are, hairballs are icky and claw marks on furniture are often unrepairable.
