Get the garlic! Vam pires have invaded movie houses across the nation in the form of "New Moon," which Post critic Kyle Smith gave a measly 1½ stars in his review.

But fans of this movie don't care what Smith or any other critic thinks. They're going to plop down their money no matter what.

This is as good a time as any for a brief survey of the vampire genre, which owes its existence to Bram Stoker's 1887 novel "Dracula."

The earliest surviving vampire flick is "Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror," a 1922 silent by German F.W. Murnau.
