Where does Charlaine Harris get her inspiration ?

By Charlaine Harris

A question I'm asked over and over (and over), and my least favorite question, is this:

"Where do you get your inspiration?"

Frankly, I hate the question because I don't understand it. If inspiration were obtainable by artificial means, as the question implies, everyone would have it. The most pertinent definition in my Webster's is "a sudden creative idea or act."

How can I explain where my ideas come from? Ideas are the product of a witch's brew of circumstances: watching the news, long thought, another book, the act of washing dishes, a single gesture in a play . . . all of these can combine to spark a train of thought that leads to something new, something I think is worth pursuing. Connections occur in my head, and all of a sudden something is happening in my book that I think is worthy of being recorded, important enough in its revelation of character or plot.

Some days it really IS like a lightbulb going on over my head -- on very good days. Other days, I sit and stare and think about my cuticles.

ABC hits the TWILIGHT and TRUE BLOOD crowd with THE GATES

There was a teaser floating around earlier today for a new ABC series called THE GATES. Since it didn't really show ANYTHING aside from UNDERWORLD's Rhona Mitra in fangs, I didn't post it. Now there's a new, extended HD promo for the series that popped up tonight on ABC's YouTube page. THE GATES is premiering Sunday June, 20th as a part of ABC's Summer Lineup. With the lucky 13 episode order in place, will THE GATES stay open for long, or will this suffer the fate of HAPPY TOWN and EASTWICK? There looks to be some sexy Vampire/Werwolf action, so we're definitely hitting the TWILIGHT SAGA/TRUE BLOOD/VAMPIRE DIARIES realm, but the setting is more "Wysteria Lane." Check out the synopsis and trailer below.

“Blood Oath,” a political thriller with a vampire twist, coming to a theater near you

Vampires. They’re all the bloody rage right now. Heck, I’d go far as to say that vampires are the new zombies. So, with that said, Hollywood is sucking dry any source material they can for “new” ideas involving those sexy creatures of the night.

Such is the case with Christopher Farnsworth’s Blood Oath, an action adventure novel with a vampire spin that centers around an undead, blood-sucking Secret Service agent. Described as a “mix of political techno thrills and supernatural action,” the book tells of a vampire named Nathaniel Cade who is taken hostage by the U.S. Army during the Civil War, and subsequently forced to protect the presidency (which he does for what has been around 150 years). Oath, which hits bookshelves Tuesday, revolves around Cade being hung up in a plot involving a new form of biological weapon connected to a White House conspiracy.

Producer Lucas Foster (LAW ABIDING CITIZEN, MR. & MRS. SMITH, EQUILIBRIUM), under his Warp Films hood, optioned the right to Oath, as well as Farnsworth’s future follow-up, Black Site. Scripts for both adaptations are to be written concurrently with a still-unnamed screenwriter working alongside Farnsworth, who will help shape the screenplays. Foster said that he hopes to get OATH in production by next year.

So, a vampiric Jack Bauer, eh? What do you think?
