Alexander Skarsgård on starring in both Generation Kill and True Blood

From Telegraph UK

Alexander Skarsgård, the star of HBO’s biggest hit since The Sopranos, talks about his sudden success and having a famous father.

Channel 4 is giving both True Blood and Generation Kill their first airings on terrestrial television on Wednesday, one straight after the other. It’s an odd juxtaposition, because apart from the fact that they are both made by the American cable company HBO, they could scarcely be more different – True Blood, a tale of vampires coming out of the closet in the Deep South, is a fantastical, at times hilarious chunk of modern gothic; Generation Kill, based on real events and people, is a painstakingly realistic seven-part depiction of life for an elite detachment of US Marines in the first phase of the Iraq War.

The one constant between them is the Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgård, 33. He plays a 1,000-year-old Viking vampire in True Blood, and a laconic US marine sergeant in Generation Kill, but he steals the show in both.

Skarsgård’s True Blood character Eric Northman is ‘funny and confident but also lethal’, he says. Eric is more anti-hero than hero – a blood-sucker with an entrepreneurial bent who runs a nightclub, Fangtasia.

Clarion Ledger talks to Tanya ( Kenya ) Wright

COLUMBUS — In 2006, when Tanya Wright first penned the script for a very personal film she hoped to one day make, she had never heard of Columbus.

But while in the city to meet a business partner, the native New Yorker and Los Angeles-based actress had what one might call a Possum Town epiphany.

"I was here, and we were talking about making a couple of movies," said Wright, who plays the character Kenya in the HBO series True Blood.

"I had this script I wrote several years ago that was very dear to my heart. We actually weren't going to make this one any time soon (but) I looked out the window one day and realized this is the perfect place to shoot this movie, just perfect in every way."

Butterfly Rising was Wright's directing debut and what she calls a passion project inspired by an experience in her own life.

"My brother, Barron Wright, died suddenly in 2005, and I was ... changing, wide and deep. My attraction to butterflies during this period of my life was strong. A butterfly - with its four stages: egg, caterpillar, cocoon and, finally, butterfly - is the result of a metamorphosis, the complete transformation."

The Top 10 Best Vampire Book Series

The top ten most popular (based on online chatter) vampire book series are:

10. Riley Jensen Guardian by Keri Arthur

9. Anita Blake Vampire Hunter by Laurell K. Hamilton

8. The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice

7. The Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine

6. Vampire Kisses by Ellen Schreiber

5. The Darren Shan Saga by Darren Shan

4. Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

3. The House of Night by P. C. Cast and Kristin Cast

2. The Southern Vampire Mysteries / Sookie Stackhouse Novels / True Blood Series by Charlaine Harris

...and the most popular Vampire Lit Series is no surprise...

1. The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer

Not quite making the top ten were Night Huntress by Jeaniene Frost, Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith, Undead and ... by MaryJanice Davidson, Blue Bloods by Melissa de la Cruz, Vampire Beach by Alex Duval, Night World by L.J. Smith, Nikki and Michael by Keri Arthur, Mackenzie Vampires by Nina Bangs, and Almost Human by Melanie Nowak.

The top two series on this list have also been adapted for the screen, with the wildly popular Twilight Saga movies and True Blood television series on HBO. This can have only helped their dominance in this poll. While great literature does not need to be adapted for the screen, it will clearly raise awareness of a series and bring in a whole new group of fans. A Darren Shan motion picture (Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant) will be released in late 2009. Both House of Night and Vampire Academy films or TV adaptations are almost inevitable, although neither seem to be even close to production. If the new CW Network TV series based on L. J. Smith's Vampire Diaries is a hit, then those novels are bound to be in the top ten for my next vamp lit poll. And, finally, it is lovely to see that modern vampire literature icon and pioneer Anne Rice made the list, even if she was not in the top five. Oddly, only two of Anne Rice's novels (Interview with the Vampire and The Queen of the Damned) were ever turned into feature films.

I compiled this list by searching for each of the vampire book series on a number of search engines and ranking them by the number of web pages, discussion forums, photos, videos, etc that are available online.

Alexander Skarsgard : All-Day Dogs

From Hollywood elsewhere

Today's visit to the Straw Dogs interior sound-stage set in downtown Shreveport, Louisiana was a fascinating burrow; ditto visiting the exterior of the farmhouse, located in the fictional Mississippi town of Blackwater, that David and Amy Sumner (James Marsden, Kate Bosworth) move into, live in and then, during the third act, defend in a violent siege by five locals (James Woods, Alexander Skarsgard, Drew Powell, Rhys Coiro, Billy Lush). Except I'm not allowed to write about anything except in a general way, so here's some aroma & atmosphere.

Onion writer jumps on the vampire bandwagon: “The New Vampire’s Handbook”

By Willie Clark for Campus Times University of Rochester

There seems to be no shortage of vampires nowadays and with all the vampire-infiltrated books, movies and TV shows, it can be hard to find the right one to bring back to your lair or castle.

But, luckily, you won’t have to look that hard. Brought to you by writers of The Onion and The New Yorker, “The New Vampire’s Handbook” offers a humorous look at the genre, while presenting rules for new aspiring vampires (or real ones) to abide by.

We were lucky enough to talk to Joe Garden, of The Onion fame, and discuss the book he contributed to and vampires in general.

First and foremost, what made you decide to write this new vampire book?

Joe Garden: Well, it was kind of a combination of things. Obviously vampire books and stuff have always been popular. Everybody has been talking about the new vampire craze and that’s really not totally accurate because vampires have always been popular. Ever since “Dracula” in the ’30s or even the old “Barnie the Vampire” books in the 1800s.

But there were a couple of things. There was the popularity of the “Twilight” novels, in which there are the vegetarian vampires who don’t really want to kill humans and who sparkle in the sunlight. And that is sort of repulsive for a long-time vampire fan. Vampires are not supposed to be romantic; they are supposed to be frightening.

The second thing was when you start watching vampire movies, you notice that there are a whole lot of scenes for the vampires that are, like, “What have I become? What’s happening to me?” for the new vampires. And it seems funny that that was never put down in book form, and it’s also funny because it always changes. Every vampire movie, every vampire book, they all have their own rules. I thought it would be fun to quantify what the rules were and, in the process, I try to throw in some of our own things.
