True Blood' scoop: Meet Merlotte's new

Merlotte’s is adding yet another wackadoodle to its payroll: Lauren Bowles has been cast in the major recurring role of Holly, an oddly prescient single mom who gets hired as a waitress at Sam’s watering hole.

Look for Bowles, whose credits include Watching Ellie, Seinfeld, and The New Adventures of Old Christine (she’s the half-sister of Julia Louis-Dreyfus), to debut midway through True Blood’s upcoming third season and possibly return as a series regular in season 4.

University conference sinks its teeth into vampire fiction

Robert Pattinson has a lot to answer for. Ever since his lanky frame immortalised Stephenie Meyer's Twilight character Edward Cullen with an American twang, all the vampires of the world seem to have lost their British passports. Those populating Bon Temps, the fictional town in Louisiana that is the setting for TV drama True Blood, have a southern American drawl. Meanwhile Mystic Falls, Virginia, where The Vampire Diaries is set, is a long way from the London and Whitby homes of the most famous vampire of all: Count Dracula.

But watch out, bloodsuckers: the Brits want to bring you home. Academics at the University of Hertfordshire are organising a conference that will serve ketchup-smothered food (it's tastier than blood) from coffins, all in the name of putting British vampire fiction back on the map. It's the brainchild of Dr Sam George, a lecturer in English literature at Hertfordshire who is fascinated by vampires and keen to use them to make literature exciting.

"British actors have traditionally been cast as vampires on screen, but recently they're all American, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Twilight. I aim to turn the focus back to the texts, which are mainly English, and what they say about our society," George explains. "I wanted to put them in the setting of a rigorous academic conference on vampire fiction to prove that you can study popular literature in a serious way.

Charlaine Harris talks about 'Sookie' series, new releases

Critically acclaimed author Charlaine Harris spoke before a large audience April 1 in Reynolds Performance Hall.

Harris, who has been writing for 27 years, is best known for her Sookie Stackhouse novels, which have served as the source for the hit HBO series "True Blood."

A resident of Magnolia, Ark., Harris has over 30 published novels, many of which have been released in over a dozen countries.

Many of Harris' novels contain strong-willed female protagonists who have overcome great physical or emotional trauma.

Answering questions Thursday night, Harris said that as a rape survivor she writes her characters this way to inspire others who have been through those situations. She also said the Sookie Stackhouse novels, also known as the Southern Vampire series, are less about vampires and more about a woman's journey through life.

Harris also gave advice to the aspiring writers in the audience, "What you study is less important than what you read and that you write every day."

“Dead in the Family” review by Ben Steelman

This morning’s mail brought an advance copy of “Dead in the Family” by Charlaine Harris (Ace Books, $25.95), the 10th novel in her “Southern Vampire” series starring Sookie Stackhouse.

Long before “Twilight,” Harris found a niche, and a new curve, in vampire fiction, basing her stories in Bon Temps, La., a small Southern town in an alternate universe, where the Japanese have invented artificial blood and the vampires have come out in the open — or come out of the coffin, so to speak.

Carrie is asked about Arlene in Season 3

Everyone thinks this means that you're not going to be on 'True Blood.'
That's so funny. Well, obviously I can't comment on what's happening on 'True Blood,' but I will say that I go through stretches where they don't need me. We have a cast of about 1,000 on 'True Blood.' [Laughs] I'm not kidding, we've got 20 series regulars, or at least people who do more than half the episodes. Then we have at least another 20 guest stars and stuff, so the writers are servicing many, many people. We all end up -- even Anna [Paquin] and Stephen [Moyer] -- having a stretch of time where we're not working. 'The Good Wife' caught me during one of those times, so I did an episode and right now, we're in discussions with 'True Blood' for me to do more.

More episodes of 'The Good Wife'?
Yes, yes. But, I'm definitely not going to be with 'The Good Wife' full-time; it's recurring.

Fans pointed out that Arlene isn't in the third book that much ...
That's correct. Although, we're not really following the books at all

True Blood Season 3 "Waiting Sucks" Promo #3 (Tara Version)

Sometimes, vampires are attractive. When it comes to a dark strangers with abnormal physical strength, what's not to love? Other than the creature's forcefulness and potential to turn you into an undead bloodsucker yourself, of course!

That's the question that seems to be at play in HBO's latest promotion for the third season of "True Blood," which debuts in June. We've already seen Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård) and Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell) facing down a difficult situation, but it looks like trouble has reared in the direction of Tara Thornton (Rutina Wesley), one of Ben Temps' most troubled mortal civilians.

Want more details? Hit the jump and we'll give you the rundown!

In the latest scene — which is billed as the first take of scene four, filmed at 5:47 AM — Tara, last seen with her heart broken over the apparent murder of "Eggs" Benedict Talley (Mehcad Brooks), is sitting in a stairwell with a mysterious stranger at her side. When the seemingly genial meeting turns south, Tara runs away and tries to leave the house, but the stranger physically restrains her from leaving.

"Let me go," Tara trembles.

Thanks to a Japanese scientist's invention of synthetic blood, vampires have progressed from legendary monsters to fellow citizens overnight. And while humans have been safely removed from the menu, many remain apprehensive about these creatures "coming out of the coffin." Religious leaders and government officials around the world have chosen their sides, but in the small Louisiana town of Bon Temps, the jury is still out.

Local waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), however, knows how it feels to be an outcast. "Cursed" with the ability to listen in on people's thoughts, she's also open-minded about the integration of vampires — particularly when it comes to Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), a handsome 173-year-old living up the road. But at the service of Bill's less virtuous vampire associates, Sookie is drawn into a series of catastrophes that will put their love to the test.

Literary Lovers Mash-Up: Sookie & Edward Cullen

Today, we have our final story from our Literary Lovers Mash-Up Writing Contest entries. We asked you to write about two literary lovers meeting OR falling in love for the first time in about 500 words.

Today’s entry comes from P.Q. Glisson — whose story reads like a really cool, extremely well-written crossover fan fiction. P.Q. introduces a meeting between Sookie Stackhouse from The Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris & Edward Cullen from Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. I have to admit, the encounter written here is one I’ve imagined myself. Fans of both series will find something to giggle over here. Plus, the story is written in such a way that it’s meant to fit in with the existing story arch of both series.

Vampire-Inspired Sunglasses

How can you NOT want these ?

Some things just never get old, like vampires or a great pair of sunglasses. So in the interest of things both timeless and timely, we submit designer Sheefun Chan’s eye-popping collaboration with Ann Sofie Back.

No, your eyes are not playing tricks on you — these Cullen-approved sunnies are actually are supposed to look like they’re are dripping blood. Of course, Chan isn’t the first to be bitten by the vampire bug and tap the sartorial power of the undead, but even if late to the bloodsucking love-fest, these tinted glasses still manage to pack a serious bite.

And considering the current paleness of our pallor, these might just be the perfect pair to hide behind before venturing out into sun. Be still our Twi-Heart.

Get vamped and pick up your pair at Opening Ceremony.

HBO anounces True Blood comic

Although it's now been officially announced at WonderCon, news trickled out a little early on the HBO website and on Twitter that IDW Publishing will release a six-issue miniseries based on the hit drama True Blood.

What's more, the show's fans may buy the comic through the HBO Shop, which has the July debut issue available for pre-order.

The title is co-plotted by True Blood creator Alan Ball and series writers Elisabeth Finch and Kate Barnow, and written by David Tischman (Bite Club) and IDW Associate Editor Mariah Huehner. It's illustrated by David Messina (Star Trek: Countdown), with covers by Messina and J. Scott Campbell.

True Blood, which debuted on the cable network in September 2008, is based on the bestselling Southern Vampire Mysteries novels by Charlaine Harris. Set in the fictional small town of Bon Temps, Louisiana, the critically acclaimed drama details the tense co-existence of humans and vampires -- and the occasional shapeshifter -- focusing primarily on the web of relationships surrounding telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin). In its two seasons, True Blood has become HBO's most-watched series since The Sopranos.

The IDW miniseries takes place on a hot, rainy night at Merlotte's bar, where Sookie, Bill, Eric -- really, Eric? -- Sam, Tara, Jason and Lafayette are trapped by a vengeful spirit that feeds on shame, and forced to dredge up dirty secrets and dark memories from their pasts. I'm just grateful Eggs isn't involved. (However, a little Lettie Mae wouldn't be a bad thing.)

The third season of True Blood debuts on June 13.
