True Blood: What the hell is a slattern ?
In episode one of season 2, Bill says to Jessica "I need you to go upstairs and get cleaned up...Remove your makeup and make yourself presentable. I will not have you looking like a slattern."
Now of course that gets a quizzical look from Jess, somewhat like the use of " call on you" did with Sookie last season ..he goes on to explain that it is "A, uh...A lady of the evening."
To which Jess responds "Awesome!"

When the first season of HBO’s Southern Gothic vampire series, created by Alan Ball (”Six Feet Under”) and based on Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse novels, ended last November, Rene Lenier was revealed as the serial killer terrorizing Bon Temps, Louisiana, and telepathic waitress Sookie (Anna Paquin) was so touched that her 173-year-
old vampire boyfriend Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) was willing to be burned to a crisp for her, she decided that a reconciliation just might be in their future. Meanwhile, her falsely-accused (and frequently shirtless) brother Jason (Ryan Kwanten) found God, short-order cook/dealer/prostitute Lafayette went missing, and a dead leg was discovered sticking out of detective Andy Bellefleur’s car. All caught up? Let’s proceed.
In the second two premiere, the offending appendage is quickly identified as that of Miss Jeanette, a.k.a. the faux voodoo priestess who performed an “exorcism” on both surly-but-sensitive bartender (and BFF to Sookie) Tara (Rutina Wesley) and her alcoholic mother. Not only has Miss Jeanette been murdered, however, but her attacker has also taken the liberty of physically removing her heart as well. Fun! The event pushes a shaken Tara further into the ominous world of the mysterious “social worker” Maryann (Michelle Forbes). We know Maryann is up to no good because she was discovered naked in the middle of the road — with a giant pig, no less — last season. Plus, when her manservant Carl accidentally interrupts a tender moment between Tara and “Eggs,” another lodger staying at Maryann’s mansion, she channels her inner Faye Dunaway and slaps him, screaming, “Nobody needed towels!” Maryann’s connection to Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell), Sookie’s boss and erstwhile canine protector (as a shapeshifter, he can transform into a dog at will), is also explained via flashback. Unsurprisingly for this show, rough sex is involved.

Whoo doggy, wasn't that fun? There's been so much run-up to this second season of True Blood, I was worried the actual product wasn't going to meet the challenge. The season premiere episode, "Nothing But the Blood," did a good job of juggling all the balls left in the air at the end of last season (dead body in parking lot, the mystery of MaryAnn, Bill's vampire-in-training, Lafayette's fate) while delivering on much of the promise Alan Ball was telling us about last week in interviews. Ball said the second season was going to be "more intense ... a lot scarier (and) sexier." Let's see how he did:
More intense? Check.
Scarier? Check.
Sexier? *Double-check.
I'd say that's pretty good. (Spoilers to follow.)
*Those worried that we'd have to wait for some sweet Bill and Sookie nooky certainly had their concerns put to rest. No Cat Power love this time, but having watched a few episodes, I can tell you that Anna Paquin is no longer as shy about showing off her goods.
Alan Ball claims True Blood is pure popcorn, but forgive me if I go all Cliff Notes for a second. I picked up on a theme emerging amidst the thrills, and it's a circular one of reparation. Jason makes amends for his past by giving himself over to the Fellowship of the Sun cult, but he can't do it until Sookie hands over her own reparations given to her by her diddling Uncle Bartlett, who in turn had restitution forced on him by Bill, who, by episode's end is made to apologize for the action the only way a Southern gentleman knows how -- with some well written romantic flattery. Sookie can't resist, and lays thick her best Scarlett O'Hara: "God damn you Bill Compton, I love you." It's bodice-ripping time!

Sookie goes into Gran's bedroom for the first time
One of the most moving scene of the premier episode of season two had to be when Sookie goes into Gran's bedroom for the first time ...
(* in one of the interviews ball says some of the cast and crew brought thier own mementos from their mothers and grandmothers to be in Gran's house scenes as did Ball-these aren't all just stage props)
I've received a number of email questions and comments about a couple things in that scene.
1. What Charlaine book was Gran reading? ( that we see laid half open on the bed)
A. The book we see is book 8 of the Aurora Teagarden series , Poppy Done to Death by Charlaine Harris.
If you remember we saw Gran reading Last Scene Alive ( bk 7) in the Aurora Teagarden series in episode 1 in Season 1 as she waited for Sookie to come home. HERE
2. Is that the cryin' pie music we hear ?

True Blood Sucker Punch: Episode One

Welcome to Sucker Punch, the only blog post that ranks the gaudiest moments on this week's episode of True Blood.
Because come on, y'all... gaudiness is True Blood's specialty. Yes, HBO's Southern Gothic vampire drama serves up a variety of delicious moments---ranging from steamy sex scenes to sensitive revelations to scary fights---but everything's infused with trashiness. People don't just die: They get their hearts ripped out. Characters don't just go to church: They join cults. Vampires don't just go to bars: They go to black-leather sin pits with names like Fangtasia. If the show were more over the top, it would under itself.
And frankly, that's why I love it. The series, created by Six Feet Under and American Beauty's Alan Ball, pulses with such reckless, lusty energy that I cannot wait for each new episode.
Which brings me back to Sucker Punch: Instead of simply reviewing each week's installment, I'm going to tease out the moments that best embody True Blood's tawdry heart. I hope you'll join me in my quest!
I'm happy to say that "Nothing But the Blood," the first episode of season two, is just as florid as I'd hoped it would be.
The first scene, for heaven's sake, reveals that the dead body in the back of Deputy Andy Bellefleur's car (discovered at the end of last season, you'll remember), belongs to Miss Jeanette, the voodoo priestess who drove demons from Tara and her mother. Except Miss Jeanette isn't just dead. Her heart has been torn from her body, and her face is frozen in a rictus scream on par with that girl in the opening scene of The Ring. It's a deeply disturbing image that also sets up a potentially season-long conflict between Tara and her mother. Now that Tara doesn't have faith in Miss Jeanette's healing powers and her mom still does, we can see battle lines getting drawn between them. Even though they love each other, it seems like they're pushing each other toward an ultimatum: Choose to see the world like I see it, or choose to live without me.

True Blood Episode Recap: "Nothing But the Blood"

In the second-season premiere of True Blood, we pick up right where we left off, in the parking lot of Merlotte's where there's a dead body with painted toenails in Andy's car. We find out who it is, and what that discovery means for Lafayette's future on the show. Bill and Sookie squabble like old marrieds, except now they can also squabble with their surrogate teen daughter, Jessica. We learn how Sam and Maryann know each other, and why the heck Jason is joining an anti-vampire church.
How you livin', fangbangers? This is Mickey O'Connor (blood type: O+). We heard your fervent cries for more Blood (sickos, all of you), so I'm going to be recapping each and every episode of Alan Ball's phantasma-gory, Southern-fried extravaganza for you this summer.
Full disclosure up front: I am not a Goth, nor have I ever been (save a few Cure albums from the '80s). I am also not what you'd call a fan of the vampire genre. I thought Buffy was aight, but Sarah Michelle Gellar's acting makes my teeth itch, so I was not a regular viewer. Ditto Blade, Moonlight, Angel, Underworld, and the novels of Anne Rice, Stephenie Meyer and Charlaine Harris -- on which this show is based. So I apologize in advance if I miss some of the vamp fundamentals along the way. Please feel free to school me in the comments section.
On the other hand, I'm a huge Alan Ball fan, and of his genius screenplay for American Beauty and the brutal, rough-edged nihilism of Six Feet Under. I'm already seeing how Ball is weaving his favorite themes — self-destruction as redemption, family as a necessary evil, coming out of the closet — into True Blood, and so far I really like the hot, sweaty mess he has created down on the sticky bayous of Bon Temps. Are you ready for seconds? Then let's sharpen our incisors and dig in!
BACK ON THE BAYOU
"Please tell me it's not Lafayette," Tara says, as Andy, Sookie, Sam and Tara lean over the painted toenails hanging out of Andy's car, and it's clear that no time at all has elapsed since the cliff-hanger scene in the finale. But it's not Lafayette (phew!); it's obviously a woman, and someone has gone to the trouble of removing her heart. Ick. But who is it? Yikes! It's Miss Jeannette, the defrauded exorcist, and her facial rictus is harrowing, implying that she was still alive during the extraction. (Cue another scream from Tara.)
BAD THINGS
Can we just pause to give it up again for these incredible opening credits? Now with more subliminal sex scenes!
PSYCHO KILLER
In the immediate aftermath of the discovery of Miss Jeannette's body, Tara tells the cops that she doesn't know her. Sookie, who's in shock and thus can't suppress her psychic abilities, hears Tara's thoughts and realizes sh
e knows the victim, and prompts her to 'fess up.
Sheriff Bud tells Andy to go home, since he's overworked and drunk. "I... am not... overworked," Andy protests. Heh.
The cops bring Tara in for questioning about the murder of Miss Jeannette (aka Nancy LeGuare). Andy thinks Tara is somehow involved, and plays bad cop on her. It's a hilarious freak-out, and much props go to Chris Bauer for finding just the right combination of Southern stereotypes from In the Heat of the Night, Cops and Sling Blade for his vision of Andy Bellefleur. At any rate, Bud has had enough of Andy's badge-flashing bravado, and dismisses him from the case, seeing as he's both a material witness and a potential suspect.

'True Blood' Fans All A-Tweet?

It's around 7:30 p.m. on a Saturday. A quick check of the Twitter shows that among the top ten trending topics on the microblogging service are Tehran (things are tense in Iran right now), Six Flags (it's summer...and the company just filed for Chapter 11) and... HBO.
HBO? What could cause the Twiterrati to be talking about HBO on a Satuday night?
Well, the network's got a big fight tonight. But, there's this: "True Blood" returns for its second season tomorrow night. And the faithful are clearly getting excited.

TARA
Where Were We? After discovering that her exorcism was a sham, Tara goes on a joyride and is arrested for drunk-driving. She's sprung from the pokey by Maryann (Michelle Forbes), a mysterious benefactor who takes her in and encourages her to pursue a more fulfilling life. But Maryann has a secret: For now, all we know is that she can vibrate — yes, vibrate — but clearly there's more to it. As Tara wonders aloud where her cousin, Lafayette, has been for two weeks, in the finale's final scene, Tara, Andy and Sookie discover an African-American body with painted toenails in Andy's car. (Cue the screaming.)
What's Next? As Maryann ingratiates herself with the gullible folks of Bon Temps, Tara becomes suspicious. Plus, her flirtation with Eggs (Mehcad Brooks) heats up.
SOOKIE
Where Were We? Sookie used her powers to figure out that Rene (aka Drew Marshall) was the killer, and — after a quick chase through a cemetery, and with an assist from a canine Sam — she snuffs him out with a shovel.
What's Next? Eric sends Sookie to Texas on an important errand, where she discovers that she's not the only human with special talents.
JASON
Where Were We? Jason spent much of the finale in jail, trying to figure out how he could have killed four women — including his grandmother and his girlfriend — without remembering it. He is saved by Orry Dawson, the leader of the Fellowship of the Sun, an anti-vampire church. By episode's end, the gullible Jason is worshipping with the church's closed-minded faithful.
What's Next? Jason's involvement in the Fellowship creates inner conflict for the pea-brained, kind-hearted hottie, who ultimately saw the good in vampires Bill and Eddie. Plus, Rev. Steve Newlin (Michael McMillian) — and his sexy wife, Sarah (Anna Camp) — have a proposition for him.
SAM
Where Were We? Having revealed his shape-shifting abilities to Sookie, Sam's relationship with her is strained, despite Sam's role in saving Sookie from Rene. Further, Maryann's presence sends Sam into a panic.
What's Next? We'll learn more about Sam's history with Maryann. And there's a new waitress at Merlotte's, Daphne, and she has sexy eyes for the boss.
BILL
Where Were We? Though Bill was burnt to a crisp by the sun when he ventured out in daylight to save Sookie from Rene, after a quick burial, he's good as new, still muddied from the grave and ready for some moonlit, late-evening delight with his best girl. Meanwhile, Eric and Pam have had enough of the impetuous teen Jessica, who Bill had to "turn" in the finale as reparations for killing a vampire. So they dump her back on her maker. Vamp parenting is hard!
What's Next? Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) creates some trouble in Bill's relationship with Sookie when she returns to see her family.
ERIC
Where Were We? Eric spent Season 1 just vamping around, doing seductive, ominous vampire stuff, hinting that his true importance to the story would only be realized in the future.
What's Next? There's trouble brewing in the Lone Star State, and Eric exercises his power as sheriff to assign Sookie and Bill to the case.

Sookie is forced to cope with Bill’s obligations to Jessica, as well as the romantic inconveniences the teen vampire’s presence creates. At the Light of Day leadership conference, Jason makes a favorable impression on its ambitious leaders, Steve (Michael McMillian) and Sarah Newlin (Anna Camp), though not on his jealous roommate Luke (Wes Brown). Maryann casts her spell on Merlotte’s patrons, and Sam proves helpless to stop the revelry.
June 28: “Scratches”
When Sookie is attacked by a mysterious creature, Bill must enlist Eric’s (Alexander Skarsgård) help to save her. At the Light of Day retreat, Jason has second thoughts about the sect’s anti-vampire agenda, but Sarah and Steve counter his doubts with flattery and promises. After snapping at Tara (Rutina Wesley) and new employee Daphne (Ashley Jones), Sam decides to cut and run. A bored Jessica heads over to Merlotte’s, where a smitten Hoyt (Jim Parrack) falls under her spell. At another Maryann-hosted party, Tara finds her attraction to Eggs (Mehcad Brooks) interrupted by a swirling, aphrodisiac fog.
