Barnabas Collins is a 200-year-old vampire in search of fresh blood and his lost love, Josette, on the American soap opera Dark Shadows. HBO Home Entertainment is promising an immersive fan experience with its Blu-ray Disc version of True Blood: The Complete Third Season, offering nearly double the bonus content found with the second season.
The bulk of the extras come with the show’s enhanced viewing mode, which offers such features as character perspectives, in which characters from the show (in this case Jessica, Andy, Tommy and Alcide) pop up to discuss a scene with the audience; a flashback/flash forward mode, in which past or future scenes that relate to the current scene are played; as well as vampire histories and character bios. Viewers can skip from bonus event to bonus event.
New to the third season is “True Blood Lines,” an interactive on-screen guide that highlights the connections between the many worlds in the series.
These Blu-ray extras come in addition to the standard-DVD extras, which include a featurette about the show’s use of werewolves; "True Blood" Post Mortem vignettes; end-of-episode guides for bonus helpings of “True Blood”; Snoop Dogg’s “Oh Sookie” music video; and seven audio commentaries.

"True Blood: The Complete Second Season" bowed at No. 1 in video sales
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Vampire mania has reared its bloody head on disc, with HBO's Season 2 set of "True Blood" topping the national home video sales charts during its first week in stores, beating a stiff challenge from a high-profile film.
"True Blood: The Complete Second Season" bowed at No. 1 on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart and Nielsen's dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart for the week ended May 30, besting fellow newcomer "Dear John," a romantic drama that came to disc after grossing more than $80 million in theaters.

‘True Blood’ Season 2 Blu-ray and Social Media
A little more on the social media value built into the new Blu-ray version of True Blood Season 2
HBO Video’s May 25th release of True Blood: The Complete Second Season isn’t the first Blu-ray Disc to include Facebook and Twitter features. But it may be the best.
The discs allow users to post to Twitter and Facebook in real-time while watching episodes and even select certain scenes to post to Facebook. Conversely, up-to-the-minute “True Blood” Facebook page and Twitter news can be fed into the discs while fans are watching.
“Our ‘True Blood’ fans are so active on Facebook that it made a lot of sense to connect BD Live to Facebook,” said Sofia Chang, SVP of marketing for HBO Video. “By providing such a robust experience as we did on ‘True Blood’ Live Feed, we engage those fans on a deeper and personalized level while simultaneously allowing them to share it all with their friends.”
Additionally, the more a fan watches the season, the more easter eggs and virtual gifts they can earn.
There’s more: While watching the series, users can decide which “True Blood” group they wish to join, including Vampire, Fellowship of the Sun and Follower of Dionysus. The viewing experience is then tailored to that group.
Lastly, hardcore fans can use a picture of themselves that can be transformed based on the “True Blood” group they select. For those that choose Vampire, the more they watch, the more pale (and bloody) the picture gets.
Blu-ray exclusive features:
-Character Perspectives: Learn more about what's going on straight from the mouths of Hoyt, Pam, Karl, and Steve Newlin
-Flashback/Flash Forward: Move through time in the world of Bon Temps. Flashback to relive pivotal moments or Flash Forward to reveal the significance of a certain scene
-Pro/Anti-Vampire Feeds: Receive news updates and information from both organizations throughout the episode and decide which camp you support
-Hints/FYI: Don't miss a beat with these FYI trivia facts and show hints and clues
Also includes:
-The Vampire Report (Special Edition): Check out the past year's biggest stories in vampire news, politics, and popular culture in the special edition of The Perspective with Victoria Davis
-Fellowship of the Sun: Reflections of Light: Rules to live by with Fellowship of the Sun leaders Steve and Sarah Newlin
-Seven audio commentaries with the cast and crew, including Alan Ball, Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, Michelle Forbes, Alexander Skarsgard, Rutina Wesley, Ryan Kwanten, Sam Trammell, and many more

Can you say, WOW ? Pre-order now the new True Blood Season 2 Blu-ray DVDs
The Show Itself is the complete second season of the Louisianan based story of a world where vampires have have gone public with their presence. The sparks between human-vamp couple Sookie (Anna Paquin) and Bill (Stephen Moyer) are yet more intense; though the romantic frills are slightly intercepted by Bill’s unintended “student” Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll), who offers a difficult disposition in being not only a 17 year-old girl, but also being fresh to the Vampire world. The last you’ve seen of Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis)’s frightful expression in the final episode of season one is not the last, as the company he keeps and the trades that he makes has landed him in the palm of someone’s (or something’s) hand. The unusual generosity of Maryann (Michelle Forbes) that was introduced in the previous season now plays a more significant role in the story, as her absurdly lending nature has a grip on Tara (Rutina Wesley), and Sam (Sam Trammell) sincerely cautions her to open her eyes to the oddness of Maryann’s giving; perhaps because he has crossed her path in the past. Now that Vampires have been “out of the casket” for a while, one would think that there is not much else in the world that is baffling, however, an unidentifiable creature has left its scent in Bon Temps, along with a few scratches. All of this darkness is not for everyone’s taste though, as Sookie’s brother, Jason (Ryan Kwanten) leaves to join The Fellowship of the Sun, an Anti-Vampire group.
The full 12 (total) episodes for The Complete Second Season are included as follows:
- Episode 1 : “Nothing But the Blood“
- Episode 2 : “Keep This Party Going“
- Episode 3 : “Scratches“
- Episode 4 : “Shake And Fingerpop“

- Episode 9 : “I Will Rise Up“
- Episode 10 : “New World In My View“

Overall, the show is just as addictive as before; all it takes is one episode. The second season of “True Blood” stands just as strong as the first with its wide variety of inter-connecting plotlines within the deep-south world of Bon Temps, Louisiana, having now at this point seemingly left behind the shock factor of Vampires being open about their existence, and now rather floods viewers with the drama endured amongst the politics of the undead, and one after another paranormal mystery. If you enjoyed the first season, you’ve probably already made room on your shelves for this release, as it overall receives a “4.5 Star Rating“.

Video Quality on this release is 1080p in AVC MPEG-4 on FIVE BD-50’s (50 gigabyte dual-layered Blu-ray Discs) using the 1.78:1 aspect ratio.
This release’s video presentation is nothing short to its nice looking picture quality seen on the Blu-ray release of the first season. The variety of settings in the show provides an exhibit of the fluctuations in the color palette from the use of warm to cool filters. With many interior scenes taking place within Merlotte’s, and other exterior daytime shots, more of a warm picture is present, with golden-hued shades somewhat overwhelming the saturation, and also offering a more vivid contrast in primaries where available in the set design. Scenes that are conveyed with the use of this warmer palette amplify the fleshtones of the cast, even those who are “dead”, into slightly darker than natural hues, though not over-doing the effect by presenting an orange tone upon the actors. In contrast to these warm to neutral shots, are several cool-toned shots, such as those within Bill’s house, and a majority of scenes shot after-dark. The subtle presence of blues in this cool filter adds a further absence of color to the many settings involving the undead, making the solid black level further stand out.
The amount of detail visible does vary from scene to scene, depending of course upon the nature of the setting being interior, exterior, its lighting sources, and so forth. As mentioned above, the black level is solid, and in the scenes displaying the warmer palette, it translates into a bit more of an inky nature, as the general sharpness of the picture appears slightly enhanced, leaving a great amount of definition visible in several scenes/close-ups that offer abundant clarity. Special visual effects look well-blended in Hi-Def, from the CG super-abilities of the Vampires (fast movements, etc.), to the makeup effects of not only those with fangs, but other creatures as well; though if more detail were presented by this release’s video quality perhaps specific subjects could be a little more appreciated. There are no massive complaints to be held with the video quality on this release other wise, as it is worth a more than decent “4.5 Star Rating“, falling on this score for an excellent looking picture.
Disc Usage:
Disc 1 uses 28.1GB total. Disc 2 uses 38.6GB total. Disc 3 uses 38.2GB total. Disc 4 uses 39.1GB total. Disc 5 uses 37.2GB total.

Audio Quality on this release is in DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio. This DTS-HD audio track’s use of the 5.1 setup does little resting through out the show’s runtime, from the most intense audible displays, to even the most subtle of sounds conveying on-screen actions. Just as discussed in the video quality above, there are of course several scenes that take place inside of Merlotte’s, and this itself is a strong example of the perfect balance you will hear from the channels as they convey a wide array of audible subjects; the crowded conversations of customers, roaring music from the jukebox, and the clanking and chiming of dishes all pour through various channels brightly without ever harming the primary dialogue being spoken amongst the conjunction of sound. That is simply one of many examples through out the season that really makes it a point to not waste any channels in the soundscape, though depending on the content, some exhibits may be a bit more subtle while involving panning about the 5.1 setup (i.e. Jason fighting the guilty little voices in his head), or be slightly more blunt and aggressive in presentation of sound.
Unique soundeffects relevant to the content of the show, such as the amplified sense of hearing that Vampires experience that makes even the pulsation of a human’s veins rumble slightly from the subwoofer, adds yet further flare to the scale of just what this audio track can do. Not only are all of these small details well-played audibly, but are of course also accompanied by the original music composed by Nathan Barr (Broken Lizard films, and Eli Roth films). The often flowing tones of the score usually consists of small bass presence, and melodies from strings that provide rich tones from the front channels, and also provide a more subtle rear channel presence. Overall, the audio quality for this release is worthy of a “4.5 Star Rating“, proving to be a great DTS-HD Master Audio track to compliment a great show.

Bonus Materials are presented in 1080i Hi-Def (HD) video with DTS 2.0 Stereo sound.

Are Gays Driving the Tremendous DVD Sales for HBO’s True Blood?
I don't know about the premise but the article has some interesting information..
It’s Not TV, It’s GAY-ch-B-O?
I’m sure this is definitely a somewhat old theory and old thinking for anyone who began watching True Blood when it debuted last September. But I just started watching last week, so I was late to the game.
For weeks now, I’ve been marveling at the DVD sales for HBO’s True Blood. It’s sold more units and made more revenue than any other TV show this year. The accomplishment is pretty phenomenal, and I’m going to hit you with quite a few numbers to showcase just how phenomenal it is before furthering the speculation on why it has performed so phenomenally. If you’re not interested in the numeric comparisons, skip down to “Why is it selling so well?” section below.
Read on
A Comparative Look at Recent TV Show DVD Sales:
In six weeks of release it has sold almost 1.2 million units and grossed almost $41 million in revenue. It’s closest competition in 2009 so far this year comes from 24 season seven, which has also been available for six weeks but has sold less than 600,000 units and grossed just over $19 million. On a revenue basis, True Blood is the only DVD for the year in the top 20, top 30 or top 40 of DVD sales (it is currently 16th through the week ending June 28). 24 season seven is 46th by revenue.
To compare to some of its cable brethren, in four weeks of release Weeds season four (admittedly, not its best effort) had sold 432,000 DVDs and grossed almost $11 million.
Some will say it’s not fair to compare this year’s numbers because most of the 2008-2009 TV seasons have not yet been made available on DVD. That’s true, but it doesn’t matter. We can compare to the full calendar year of 2008 DVD sales when with about 17 weeks of sales (released on 9/2/08) The Office season four was the number one TV show DVD for the year selling 1.06 million units and grossing over $32 million. Because of the way we see data it’s not easy (or even usually possible) to see combined sales across multiple calendar years, but a show like Lost’s season four which went on sale with only a few weeks left in 2008 tracked closely with, but not quite as well as True Blood. After five weeks in release, Lost season four had sold over 976,000 units and grossed over $36 million. After five weeks, True Blood had sold almost 1.1 million DVDs and grossed almost $38 million in revenue.

"True Blood: The Complete First Season" DVD has sold an astonishing 1 million copies
By Maxine Shen
THE "True Blood: The Complete First Season" DVD has sold an astonishing 1 million copies, proving that HBO really does have a hit show on its hands.
In the four weeks since its release, the five-disc box set has netted $35 million in total sales according to the-numbers.com.
This puts it in the No. 1 spot for TV DVD sales for the week of June 14. Coming in at a distant second is the fourth season DVD of "Weeds," with 334,000 copies moved after two weeks of sales. Interest in "True Blood," which stars Anna Paquin as a mind-reading waitress in love with a vampire (played by real-life love Stephen Moyer), is at an all-time high now.
Even with the last game of the NBA Finals as timeslot competition, last Sunday's episode of the sex- and blood-filled series reached 3.4 million viewers, representing a drop of only 300,000 from its second season premiere airing on June 14.
The average 3.7 million people who tuned in to the "True Blood" season premiere at 9 p.m. - coupled with an additional 1.4 million viewers for the 11 p.m. encore - made it the most-watched original airing of an HBO show since the 2007 series finale of "The Sopranos."

True Blood Season 1 dvd commentaries
There are 5 episode that you can watch on the True Blood Season 1 DVD with special commentaries. I have really enjoyed these, I guess because I like the behind the scenes stuff. Episode 5 with Stephen Moyer ties as being my favorite with Alan Ball , who comments on Episode 1. ( pilot)
Episode with Commentaries include:
-Commentary on Episode 1 "Strange Love" by Alan Ball (Executive Producer/Series Creator)
-Commentary on Episode 2 "The First Taste" by Anna Paquin (Sookie Stackhouse) and Scott Winant (Director)
-Commentary on Episode 4 "Escape From Dragon House" by Brian Buckner (Writer) and Michael Lehmann (Director)
-Commentary on Episode 5 "Sparks Fly Out" by Stephen Moyer (Bill Compton) and Dan Minahan (Director)
-Commentary on Episode 7 "Burning House of Love" by Marcos Siega
-Commentary on Episode 11 "To Love Is to Bury" by Nancy Oliver
One reviewer put it this way- Executive producer/series creator Alan Ball naturally provides the most thorough and extensive commentary for Strange Love; lead actress Anna Paquin and episode director Scott Winant dissect The First Taste; writer Brian Buckner and director Michael Lehmann offer their thoughts on Escape from Dragon House; actor Stephen Moyer and director Dan Minahan deliver one of the most engaging tracks for Sparks Fly Out; director Marcos Siega explains his approach to Burning House of Love; and writer/director Nancy Oliver takes a nervous, rambling look at To Love is to Bury.

'True Blood': I'm a sucker for it
Folks being won over by the dvds..great !
When True Blood premiered last season, I watched the first few episodes and gave it what amounted to a shrug of a review. The Alan Ball series about Southern vampires, based on Charlaine Harris' bestselling novels, didn't seem all that original to me, and I wrote that the two main stars, Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer, "frequently get lost in a series in which they're the central couple."
Well, thanks to the new first-season DVD compilation, I just finished watching the entire season and I now write as a convert: True Blood just kept getting better and better, and I'm officially eager to see Season Two when it starts June 14.
