The Truth About “True Blood’s” Marshmallow-Eating Gators

I'm so glad National Geographic reads my blog ;-) ( Go ask Dallas here )

Do alligators really eat marshmallows? We had to find out after watching True Blood.
For the uninitiated, True Blood is an HBO television series wherein vampires coexist with humans in a town called Bon Temps, La. In Sunday’s episode, Tommy kills his parents and, with the help of his brother Sam, disposes of them in the river. When the bodies float, Sam summons alligators by employing the one thing that they are evidently unable to resist—marshmallows.
Curious, we rang up Captain Jack Sessions of Honey Island Swamp Tours in Slidell, La., whose website mentions tour guides using marshmallows to reward alligators that come close. We also spoke to Michael Delany, a research biologist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in Gainesville, Fla.
Captain Jack, we were watching True Blood and one of the characters baited up alligators with marshmallows. Do alligators like marshmallows?

Sessions: Yeah they do. No doubt about that. That’s a true story there. I go out and call them, bup bup bup bup bup bup–a mating call, you know. And sometimes, when they start coming, you toss them a marshmallow. Then they hang around and we give them a hot dog or two on a stick.

Go Ask Dallas- True Blood Trivia: OK , do alligators really like marshmallows ?

Q: OK - Dallas,  please tell me if alligators really like marshmallows ?
A: Yup they sure do. Check out videos below.
Of course --you should never feed animals in the wild.

In Florida, a Bold Alligator Is a Dead One -- NY Times
In the hour before dark, the water in the canal is almost black, the kind of water a person hates to fall into, even in dreams.
Six fishermen languidly fling lines baited with wriggling, palm-size bream into the murk, and now and then one will hook a nice bass. The others nod in admiration.

Go ask Dallas: Why don't we have True Blood Music Videos everyday anymore ?

In case you haven't notice, I have stopped posting a daily video,True Blood Music video of the Day. For two years, I posted a video every single day ears without MISSING A SINGLE DAY! in part I did it to remind myself and everyone that reads my blog that this is all about the fans!

It's not about the actors, as much as we love their work, looks etc it is not about the wealthy and gorgeous actors, actresses and professionals that create True Blood it is not even about our beloved Charlaine Harris , who without her imagination none of this world and it's characters would even exist.

It is about us ...we the fans if we didn't love it, watch it, read the books, buy the swag and attend the conventions ..poof these products would cease to exist because they would not be profitable for networks to produce and publishing houses to publish.

I love everything fan produced; fan art, fan music videos , fan crafts, amazing fans that write blogs, vlogs and character tweet on twitter and yes, even those who write fanfic. We do this without any compensations, we spend our own money and oodles of time just because it's fun and we love the stories and characters. Special thanks to everyone on Team True Blood in Dallas who are not only the best fans but have made this really fun for Ol' Dallas !

So Dallas' hats off to all you great fans, on to 2011, Sookie book 11 and True Blood Season 4 !

True Blood Video : Only Human !

Go ask Dallas ? True Blood Porn ? Yes, Tru: A XXX Parody

Anyone know more about True Blood porn ?  Wait, did I say that ? Anna talks with Lopez about True Blood porn video and that they gave all the cast members a copy as a wrap gift.

Anna has said in an earlier interview that they all watched this trailer on set ...
Anna Paquin has admitted that she thought the porn parody of True Blood was funny.
Paquin, who plays Sookie in the HBO show, explained that someone showed her the promo for the explicit film.
Speaking to Self, she said: "How funny is that? Someone brought their computer to set and we all watched the trailer for it. We all think it's hilarious!"
However, Paquin added that she was surprised someone thought it was necessary to make a pornographic version of the show.
"There are those who might say our show didn't really need to have a porn parody because we do a pretty good job," she joked. "How much racier can it get? Well, obviously it can, but you know."

Tru: A XXX Parody
The official summary: The simple life is shaken when death comes to the small, quiet Louisiana town of Bon Temps -- where civilians, vampires, shape-shifters, and mind readers clash in an orgy of sex & mystery. When a dead body is found with the heart ripped out, local waitress, Sookie (Ashlynn Brooke), who has a talent for reading minds, her best friend, Tara (Misty Stone), and her Vampire boyfriend, Bill (James Deen), try to unravel the supernatural web and find the murderer. Sookie and her friends find themselves pushing all their limits, both mentally and sexually, in a climax you'll have to see to believe!

Go Ask Dallas: What card game is Eric playing with Talbot in last night's True Blood Episode ?

Dallas

What card game is Eric playing with Talbot in last night's True Blood Episode ?
Thanks, T

Oh, T - Dallas loves a mystery but this was kind of easy
The scene dialogue is :

E-Hey, wait a minute. That's not how you play Kaiserspiel.
T-Kaiserspiel? We're playing Karnoffel.
E- Oh. I'm sorry.
E- Wow. I haven't played this game in centuries.
T-Russell taught me this game when I was still human.

So its  Kaiserspiel and Karnöffel - Karnoffel is the older game , here are what the cards look like and it uses a slate to keep score on - do you see it on the table?

Kaiserspiel

This game is a direct descendant of Karnöffel, one of the oldest card games known. Karnöffel was referred to as early as 1426 and was the subject of a many sermons and satirical writings in the following centuries. It may appear that most of its dreadfulness lies in the level of anarchy of the play - you can play any card you like to each trick, and can talk as much as you like about what cards you have and what you want your partner to do. In the 15th century what was apparently more shocking was the anarchic card order, taken as symbolising a disruption of the status quo, with the king being beaten by low cards, the Pope (6) beaten by the Under-knave, and special privileges given to the Devil (7).

The modern game of Kaiserspiel (often known as Kaiserjass, though it is not really has nothing to do with Jass games) is played in a small area around Stans and in the Engelberg valley, in Canton Nidwalden, south of Luzern in Switzerland. Of the surviving members of the Karnöffel family, this is the closest to the original game. The cards used are similar to the standard Swiss Jass pack, but the suits contain 3, 4, and 5 and not 8 or 9 (all the 8's and 9's should be removed from the pack before playing).

The Players
The game is played with fixed partnerships; when there are four players you sit opposite your partner as in Bridge. It is also possible for six to play; the partnerships then consist of teams of three, sitting alternately.
Each team elects its captain, and the scoring slate is placed on the table between the two captains.
The Object of the Game
The game is of the trick taking type, with trumps, but trumps had not been invented in their modern form when this game was developed, so they behave rather oddly. By the time the play of the hand starts, each player will have five cards, and the object is to win three of the five tricks. The value of the hand depends on how much betting there has been, and the winners score some number of points. The first side to get to an agreed number of points (often 101) wins.

read on here

KARNOFFEL-Karnöffel is a card game which probably came from the upper-German language area in Europe in the first quarter of the 15th century. It first appeared "listed in a municipal ordinance of Nördlingen, Bavaria, in 1426 among the games that could be lawfully played at the annual city fête[1]. This makes the game the oldest identifiable European card game in the history of playing cards.

Go ask Dallas: What kind of car was that Eric gave to Lafayette in last week's True Blood episode ?

Dallas LOVES questions !

Jess writes ...

Hey Dallas,

My friends and I are trying to figure out what kind of car Eric gave (Sold) Lafayette? Were thinking a modified Corvette????Do you know what it is?
Thanks,Jess

Dear Jess

It is a SV 9 Competizione it is described here as

The SV 9 Competizione combines the powertrain of the world-class American-made Corvette C6 with a new Italian-styled custom coachbuilt body and upgraded interior. While the 9 C retains the distinctive C6 Corvette shape, the new custom body is full of design cues that shout “That’s Italian!” The result is one of best Corvette coaches we’ve seen in a field crowded with Corvette coaches.

The SV 9 Competizione will be limited to 1,000 units at a cost of $99,995 which includes a new, well-equipped donor C6 Corvette purchased through their dealer network. Compared to other supercars and exotics, the Corvette-based SV 9 C might just be one of the best custom coachwork bargains of the year.

Eric's Car in the Sookie books
Dead until Dark- Outside, Eric was waiting outside by his car—a Corvette, naturally.

Living Dead in Dallas- Shaking his blond head, his trench coat drawn close around him, Eric opened the door to his red Corvette. I would be arriving at the orgy in style.

Dead to the World - "You known darn good and well who I am. What's up with you? Why are you out here without your car?" Eric drove a sleek Corvette, which was simply Eric.

Go Ask Dallas : True Blood time line -how much time has elapsed since Season 1 ?

Dear Dallas :

My husband and I were discussing the timeline of the show..wondering how long Sookie and Bill have known each other at this point, and how much time has lapsed between the shows seasons of 1-2-3. I have seen you have done a lot of work already, so I am hoping that this you can answer with minimal research to you. Thanks so much Dallas!

Hey Deb

Yes, I love timelines - see this post from last season when everyone was questioning how long they knew each other before Bill asked her to marry him. I always do an episode by episode time line for every season of True Blood and you can see S1 and S2 ones here:

http://www.lovingtruebloodindallas.com/search/label/True%20Blood%20Timelines

I also have done the books time line:

http://www.lovingtruebloodindallas.com/search/label/timeline

To answer your question exactly there were 17 days in season 1, a 2 week skip and 12 days in season 2 -so when season 3 opens on the last day of season 2 it has been 43 days since the night Bill walked into Merlotte's the very first time.

We have another little time marker in Season 3 the Dr. told Arlene that she is 9 weeks (63 days pregnant) so that would date back to her "being with " Rene a few weeks before  Bill and Sookie meet.

I'm working on season 3 !

I love questions - keep em coming! No question is silly!

Go Ask Dallas : What's the deal with Dead in the Family (Sookie bk#10) cover and why isn't it on CH site?

There sure has been a lot of fuss over the supposed 'leaked' Sookie #10: Dead in the Family book cover this past week. On the CH fan forum no one is still even allowed to post, discuss or even mention it without the post being deleted.

So, as usual -I'm getting lots of emails .....

To which I say ...what the F? What the hell is all the fuss about ??? I mean, really !

I really don't know why Charlaine has been sitting in the cover for so long without putting it on her own website and why she chose not to be the first to post it. I do know her publisher gave the image of the cover to Project Paranormal video team ( which is a project of Penguin books) to be used in the "Holiday Author Greetings" videos and they used it and the videos were posted on Dec 10th.

Run the video below to 0:52 or so and there you will see it embedded in the video as Charlaine is talking.

I've heard lots of whining about unauthorized books covers being posted on fan sites and speculations as to whether it's really "the" cover. I just don't get this controversy at all -because the publisher themselves posted the video ( with the cover ) then we ( TB/Sookie fan blogs) all posted the cover and started talking about it, NOTHING nefarious about it at all.

Her publisher put it out there and we talked about it .... case closed.
I say, let the discussion begin ...

Oh and remember we are having a special 'Dead in the Family' edition of our "Talk Blood " radio show this Sunday night ! Let's talk more about this then....

Go Ask Dallas: Why is Dead in the Family, Sookie Bk #10 Delayed?

No wait--- the book isn't delayed, we still expect it May 4th 2010 but I have had tons of people emailing me ask where the cover art is an WHERE in the HELL is the first chapter!

Everyone is right the cover art was released for Dead and Gone on Nov 25th 2008 and Chapter 1 was release on December 4th 2008.

Yes, it's December 5th today and no cover and no 1st chapter. So, what's the deal ?
As to the cover : Charlaine does have the cover, she has said so on here blog,

The cover is a beautiful blue.~ maybe Sapphire - like Eric's Eyes
and
The cover does have sparkly. I'll see about getting it up soon.
Charlaine Harris

As to the chapter: Well, it seams to be ready too --they are just teasing a little.

This was a question on blog: It's now December - can we expect chapter 1 of Dead in the Family???? (oh please, oh please, oh please!)

Here is the answer: In the past it's been posted as late as the 15th. Just be patient and keep an eye out.

I'm betting on next week before we get too close to Christmas !
So get ready for your first taste of Dead in the Family...

How's Bill doing with the silver poisoning ?
How's Sookie feeling and recuperating ?
What about the Blood Bond with Eric ?
Poor Claudine and Tray -what's the fall-out ? Please don't leave Amelia!
Does Eric tell her where he was in the first chapter ?
What next from Felipe de Castro ?

Just a few questions , what are yours ?

Go Ask Dallas: Will Steve & Sarah Newlin return in True Blood Season 3?

Dallas

The actor who plays Steve Newlin is saying we'll see he and Sarah again in True Blood. I remember him being with the guy that attacks Sookie in Club Dead but do we ever see or hear from the Newlin's again after that in the books ?

Thanks, TBFAN

Hey Fan

We meet the Newlin's in bk 2 'Living Dead in Dallas' and he is the one who is in 'Club Dead' when Sookie is staked.

We don't see them again but Sookie does think of them and the Fellowship ( see quotes below). The threat and influence of the Fellowship of the Sun does reemerge in the later books but we have yet to see the Newlin's again. I bet we will !

Mike " Steve Newlin" McMillian did recently say to MTV

"I've been told he'll be back," actor Mike McMillian, who plays Reverend Steve, told MTV News of his character.

Though the actor doesn't know when he and costar Anna Camp will return, he has a few theories about how things might go down. This kind of fits the Steve ibn Club Dead storyline.

Bk 3 Club Dead

Somehow, in the melee, my eyes met those of the taller man, and we recognized each other. He was G. Steve Newlin, former leader of the Brotherhood of the Sun, a militant anti-vampire organization whose Dallas branch had more or less bit the dust after I'd paid it a visit. He was going to tell them who I was, I just knew it, but I had to pay attention to what the man with the stake was doing. I was staggering around on my heels, trying to keep my feet, when the assassin finally had a stroke of brilliance and transferred the stake from his pinned right hand to his free left. With a final punch to my back, Steve Newlin dashed for the exit, and I caught a flash of creatures bounding in pursuit. I heard lots of yowling and tweeting, and then the black-haired man threw back his left arm and plunged the stake into my waist on my right side

Book 5 Dead as a Doornail
Actually, the Fellowship had quite a bit against me. I'd been responsible for their huge Dallas church being raided and one of their main leaders going underground. The papers had been full of what the police had found in the Fellowship building in Texas. Arriving to find the members dashing in turmoil around their building, claiming vampires had attacked them, the police entered the building to search it and found a basement torture chamber, illegal arms adapted to shoot wooden stakes into vampires, and a corpse. The police failed to see a single vampire. Steve and Sarah Newlin, the leaders of the Fellowship church in Dallas, had been missing since that night. I'd seen Steve Newlin since then. He'd been at Club Dead in Jackson.
He and one of his cronies had been preparing to stake a vampire in the club when I'd prevented them. Newlin had escaped; his buddy hadn't. It appeared that the Newlins' followers had tracked me down. I hadn't foreseen such a thing, but then, I'd never foreseen anything that had happened to me in the past year. When Bill had been learning how to use his computer, he'd told me that with a little knowledge and money, anyone could be found through a computer.

Maybe the Fellowship had hired private detectives, like the couple who had been in my house yesterday. Maybe Jack and Lily Leeds had just been pretending to be hired by the Pelt family? Maybe the Newlins were their real employers? They hadn't struck me as politicized people, but the power of the color green is universal.

Bk 6 Definitely Dead
But one of Arlene's customers yelled for her, and she was definitely glad to walk away. My eyes met Sam's, and we looked equally troubled. The Fellowship of the Sun was an antivampire, antitolerance organization, and its influence was spreading. Some of the Fellowship enclaves were not militant, but many of them preached hatred and fear in its most extreme form. If the Fellowship had asecret underground hit list, I was surely on it. The Fellowship founders, Steve and Sarah Newlin, had been driven out of their most lucrative church in Dallas because I'd interfered with their plans. I'd survived a couple of assassination attempts since then, but there was always the chance the Fellowship would track me down and ambush me. They'd seen me in Dallas, they'd seen me in Jackson, and sooner or later they'd figure out who I was and where I lived.I had plenty to worry about.

Tv Squad also writes
Do True Blood's Steve and Sarah Newlin seem like Joel and Victoria Osteen?

Go Ask Dallas: What does the note say that Sam's adopted father gave him?

Here it is:

Melinda and Joe Lee Mickens last know in Magnolia, Ark.

I'm sorry

Any other questions about last night episode?

This location is a nod to Charlaine as according to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas :

Jean Charlaine Harris Schulz is a horror and mystery writer whose novels have a distinctive Southern setting and are often full of dark humor. Several of her “Southern Vampire” books have served as the basis for the HBO television series True Blood, which debuted in 2008. Her twenty-sixth novel, Dead and Gone, made its debut at the number one position of the New York Times hardcover fiction bestseller list on May 21, 2009....She currently lives in Magnolia (Columbia County).

True Blood behind the scene: Godric meets God in both Dallas and Los Angeles. "Go Ask Dallas -where was this filmed ?"

Dear Dallas ,

I am confused was the 'Godric on the roof' his big finale scene shot in L.A. or in Dallas ?

Thanks and I love you blog!

"Dallas " (haha)

Answer: Well, Dallas thanks for writing and I think what we have here is a little bit of movie magic.

Some of the scenes on the roof were shot in Dallas and some of it was shot in Los Angeles. The end when Godric is alone and facing the east, he is on the top of a newer part of the Adolphus hotel in Dallas and he's on the helipad and the building he is facing (with the clock tower-Note it's 6:13 am) is a well know Dallas landmark, it's our old Mercantile building.

We know that the Dallas Morning News reported on July 24th

'Blood' in Dallas

HBO's red-hot vampire series True Blood shot a scene recently atop the Adolphus.

"A character was on the roof and had to burst into flames when the sun came up," said Janis Burklund of the Dallas Film Commission. The scene is for the ninth episode of the second season of the show, which is set in Louisiana.

Then we read in the Access Hollywood article this morning about Allan Hyde ( the young actor who played Godric ) racing with Anna and Alexander and the crew to shoot the scene in L.A.

"Allan explained that he, along with AccessHollywood.com’s newest Rising Star – Alexander Skarsgard (Eric Northman) and Anna Paquin (Sookie Stackhouse) — had just minutes to film his death scene in downtown LA. The three actors and crew raced to capture the morning’s natural light.

“It was amazing, not just because it was such a touching scene. The performances of Alex and Anna in that scene were so amazing just to watch,” he told Access. “I never tried anything like it. I had very good feeling about the scene and I’m excited to watch it.”

So what gives ? which is right ?

Well, they can't trick Ol' Dallas - the scene was shot in two places. It was shot with Alex, Anna and Allan on top of the building in L.A. located on Figueroa St. in Downtown LA.

The 'tell' here is that you can clearly see the name of the building the back of the real Anna, is the TCW building and it's located on 865 South Figueroa Street. So, I think they might actually be on top of the building located at 800 South Figueroa and if you click on the Google map below and then look at it on satellite view I think you can see the stairs that Sookie comes up and that Eric leaves by are right next to the heliport.

Then in the other scenes really shot in Dallas you see just Alan or they used Allan and a Sookie stand-in ....also look at the skies and the railings.

At least, I know I'm not crazy because in the same scene we saw two unique buildings but one is in L.A. and the other is in Dallas and we all know that's impossible- except in Hollywood !
