'True Blood Vol. 3' soundtrack full stream featuring PJ Harvey, Gil Scott-Heron, Neko Case, and more: Hear it here! -- AN EW EXCLUSIVE STREAM

Gather ’round, wolves and waitresses and werepanthers, vampires and fairies and whatever you’re supposed to call Arlene’s baby’s demon doll: The third volume of the soundtrack for True Blood, everybody’s favorite gypsies-vamps-and-thieves sex-and-gore fest has arrived.
Actually, not quite yet; the official release won’t come until Sept. 6 (though you can preorder it here).
In the meantime, EW has an exclusive full stream of the album, including covers of classic songs interpreted by Neko Case and Nick Cave, Siouxsie and the Banshees, PJ Harvey and the Violent Femmes’ Gordon Gano, Damien Rice, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Nick Lowe, Jakob Dylan, Massive Attack, and the late, great Gil Scott-Heron.
After the jump you’ll find the stream, as well as some background from the show’s music supervisor Gary Calamar — he also currently oversees the music selections for House and Dexter, and famously placed Sia’s “Breathe Me” in the Six Feet Under finale — on how he chose the songs for TB Vol. 3:

True Blood – Music From the HBO Series Volume 3 what's on new soundtrack and pre-order today!

With necromancers gaining control over vampires, mediums channeling dead uncles, and shape-shifters still  on the prowl, the fourth season of HBO’s True Blood has been pretty action-packed.
The show’s music, while always excellent, has been especially tight this year, delivering great covers like Nick Cave and Neko Case’s “She’s Not There,” Karen Elson’s take on “Season of the Witch,” and Nick Lowe’s “Cold Grey Light of Dawn” (which closed out the most recent episode of the show).
All of those tracks (in addition to 15 more) are on the forthcoming compilation True Blood – Music From the HBO Series – Volume 3.

'True Blood' season finale: The story behind the episode's titular song 'Evil (Is Going On)'

Another spectacularly bloody, true-death-gooey season of fangs, flesh, and fairies came to an end last night, and—no spoiler alerts!—EW spoke with the show’s music supervisor, Gary Calamar, to get the backstory behind their rerecording of the classic blues song for which the finale episode was named.Calamar, who also handles all the music for Dexter, House, and Men of a Certain Age, as well as holding a long-running DJ spot on LA indie station KCRW, tells EW of covering Howlin’ Wolf’s iconic song “Evil (Is Going On)” with CC Adcock and “Bad Things” singer Jace Everett: “We were looking for a sort of signature song, and we wanted to have our own. We love Howlin’ Wolf, but we just wanted to have something a little fresher, something exclusive.”

True Blood: Season 3 Ends With A Touch Of "Evil"

Thw wonderful Jef lets us in on music from last night's finale

It's weird, y'know? When Alan Ball was doing Six Feet Under, he turned out what may be the absolute best season/series finale of all time in that show's fifth season. He just can't seem to get there in True Blood - thus far, every season has ended on a very "meh" kind of feeling.
This time around, Sookie (Anna Paquin) has thrown Vampire Bill (Stephen Moyer) out of her life again, the season's big bad was encased alive in concrete, which cannot possibly come back to haunt our protagonists, and basically a whole bunch of storylines come to their absolutely predictable endings.
Oh, and Sookie dresses like frakkin' Tinkerbell and disappears into fairy light in a graveyard that we swear was lifted straight from the set of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
All and all though, it was a hell of a season with good stories, good boobs, good blood and good music.

True Blood Music : Hell's Bells ! Cary Ann Hearst sounded great last night !

**This is the song that you hear over last night's closing credits!

Local artist Cary Ann Hearst's track 'Hells Bells' featured on True Blood Local singer/songwriter Cary Ann Hearst's track "Hells Bells" played during the credits of HBO's Sunday night smash hit True Blood.

Hearst, who travels the country playing her own brand of country that would turn any country hater into a fan (me), will be playing at The Tin Roof on July 29th. With a voice reminiscent of Wanda Jackson and Loretta Lynn and a stage presence that'll have you hooked from the opening chord, you may as well just go ahead and start telling your friends you'll be at the show.

To listen to more of Hearst's solo recordings, here's a link to her earlier album Dust and Bones which is damn near perfect. Hearst also plays with her husband, Michael Trent in their other project called Shovels & Rope.

True Blood: Elmore James, Vampire Grudge Sex Hurt Us Too

Team Talk Blood member, Jefwithonef weighs in with his muisc review of Ep 3

Season 3, Episode 3: "It Hurts Me Too"

Being able to follow the Season 3 of True Blood from the beginning has given Gothtopia a chance to really flow along with Alan Ball's thought processes and dissect in a constructive and insightful way all the nuances both of the current storyline, and how his choices in soundtracking illustrate and enhance those nuances.
This week's report will not be one of those kinds of critiques.
Blues fans should have no trouble recognizing the song that gives the third episode, "It Hurts Me Too," its name. It's one of the most recognizable blues standards out there, first recorded by Tampa Red back in 1940. Since then it's been sung by everyone from the Rolling Stones to Eric Clapton, but the most influential recording of the song, and the one used in the episode, is the one done by Elmore James.

James was one of those blues artists that was such an archetype he might as well have been the subject of a blues song himself, with his appetite for homemade moonshine, fast driving and guns contributing to his death via heart attack No. 3 at age 45 in 1963. His interpretation of his friend Tampa Red's classic song has proven so definitive that other artist's covers rarely venture far from it.

True Blood: Beautifully Broken With Shelby Lynne

Team Talk Blood Radio ( live Sunday nights after True Blood -podcast links on right) member Jefwithonef posted his fabulous Season 3, Episode 2: "Beautifully Broken" music review

Alan Ball was known for his masterful use of music in Six Feet Under. He's lost none of his touch when it comes to his current HBO series, True Blood - which happens to be set in the Louisiana swamps, not terribly far from Houston.

Season 3 of True Blood is living up to its own hype fairly well, and even though Gothtopia had some deep misgivings about the music when we saw the episode titles list for this season, thus far, we have nothing to complain about.

Reduced down to almost its lowest common denominator, True Blood is about relationships. You'll find the books filed under paranormal romance in many stores. And though the first episode set us up to contemplate the dangers of relationships, and whether or not we are tainted by them, Episode 2 ("Beautifully Broken"), addresses the other side pf that equation.

Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) continues to hunt for her missing fiancé Vampire Bill (Stephen Moyer). In doing so, she is incurring the wrath of a sect of secretive Nazi werewolves. (Aside: This episode features a pop-culture cameo by having an appearance by a werewolf woman of the SS. Make the movie, Zombie, and don't argue. End aside.)

      Engines rev and trumpets roar
I don't hear your voice no more
And living isn't worth the fear of dying
Wrapped up package torn up clothes
Empty days and deep dark holes
The only thing that keeps a man from crying

Oh if I don't get you back I'll fall upon a railroad track
And let the steel wheels cut right through my bones
Oh if I don't get you back I'll cover up my bloody tracks
With sorrow hopes and hide my dying pride
      Oh cause I'm alive

      Whispers in a losers dream
Holding on to not a thing
Cause these arms now are paralyzed without you to hold
Bold with crazy have no fear
Children cry and then I hear
The message my lies tell me in my dreams

Oh if I don't get you back I'll fall upon a railroad track
And let the steel wheels cut right through my bones
Oh if I don't get you back I'll cover up my bloody tracks
With sorrow hopes and hide my dying pride
      Oh cause I'm alive

Maybe if I caught the rain
In pails that filter out the pain
I'd realize why you had to go
Days of lightning show the way
And night time creeps and holds at bay
The missing you, the mean, the cold, the ugly

Oh if I don't get you back I'll fall upon a railroad track
And let the steel wheels cut right through my bones
Oh if I don't get you back I'll cover up my bloody tracks
With sorrow hopes and hide my dying pride
      Oh cause I'm alive

True Blood, Season 3, Episode 1: Beck Is Thicker Than Water

Jef is now part of our team for our Talk True Blood Blogtalk radio show !

Alan Ball was known for his masterful use of music in Six Feet Under. He's lost none of his touch when it comes to his current HBO series, True Blood - which happens to be set in the Louisiana swamps, not terribly far from Houston.

      Episode 13.1: Bad Blood

Welcome back to Bon Temps, LA, where the men drink blood, the women hear your thoughts, and the children don't figure much into the R-rated happenings. When last we left True Blood, Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) was rushing out of the bathroom of a very nice restaurant to tell Vampire Bill (Stephen Moyer) that indeed she would be his until her death did they part when he was suddenly abducted. We pick up the vamp-napping in progress as three hillbillies take turns using Bill like a wine cooler in the backseat in order to get high off his blood.

Blood figures in any vampire series. It's kind of a big deal. But the impression Gothtopia gets is that the concept of tainted blood will play a big part in this season. Are we as people, even undead or shape shifting people, fated to become like those whose blood gave us life in the first place? Certainly nurture battles nature. The children of rock stars become accountants. Last we heard, none of the children adopted from the Manson family, including Charlie's own biological children, have become hypnotic murderers. And yet, 500 years after the death of Vlad the Impaler (Who served as the inspiration of Bram Stoker's Dracula), one of his direct descendants owned and operated a Turkish blood bank. Is a blood link to a bloody past an indicator of an inescapable fate?
