Home Improvement: Undead Edition includes new Sookie short story RELEASED TODAY!

  This new short story anthology includes a new Sookie short story “If I Had a Hammer” by Charlaine Harris.

This short story finds Sookie with Sam, helping Tara and JB do some home modification on their house to accommodate their new twins. In the knocking down of a closet door they find a bloody hammer and uncover an 70 year old mystery. As it turns out, a boy next door (back in the 30s) was bludgeoned to death with said hammer. Now there is an angry and sad spirit plaguing the house and causing all those gathered, including their new clairvoyant nurse Quiana to feel it. Now Tara, JB and their twins need the help of clairvoyant Quiana, telepath Sookie, and bloodhound Sam to eradicate the spirit from the house.

It was a nice little read at only about 27 pages.

Just a little snippet here. I was in Borders the other day and came across the new compilation of short stories CH edited with her cohorts in crime. Her website says its not due out till August but it was already on a few bookshelves. Anyway …

This short story finds Sookie with Sam, helping Tara and JB do some home modification on their house to accommodate their new twins. DYING FOR DAYLIGHT Game Based on Charlaine Harris’ Short Stories

I-play recently announced that they are collaborating with Sookie Stackhouse creator Charlaine Harris on an new interactive adventure game. Called Dying For Daylight, the game will be based on the character Dahlia, a vampire heroine featured in several of her short stories.
“Taking a character into the world of games is great fun and allows us to tell stories and bring characters to life in a whole new way,” says Harris. “Just like Sookie, Dahlia is a unique and multi-faceted character. Working with I-play to present her in this new way has been an amazing experience, and I can’t wait to hear what fans think of the results.”

Glamour...huh, appropriately named magazine for a Sookieverse short story huh ??


Charlaine Harris says on her Facebook page, “The holiday edition of Glamour is out, containing a Dahlia short story by moi. I had a lot of fun writing it, and the editing job was GREAT. I hope all of you enjoy it.”
Dahlia Lynley-Chivers is a vampire that lives in the Sookie-universe and was introduced in the short story “Tacky” in My Big, Fat Supernatural Wedding. Dahlia will also be featured in the new Dying For Daylight game that Charlaine Harris and I-play are developing.

You may recall that I am fortunate enough to have a short story published in the MWA anthology, Crimes by Moonlight, edited by Charlaine Harris. The hard cover edition was released by Berkley Prime Crime last April. I bragged about it here.

A few people have asked me if Crimes by Moonlight is available as an e-book. I always say, “I don’t know. Haven’t seen it as such.” Well, now I do know. Both Amazon and Barnes and Noble are now carrying e-book editions. So, if you are inclined to e-readers, now’s the time.

Of course, if you want the paperback edition to carry on the subway or to the beach, you still have to wait until next spring.

New Sookie short story : "Death's Excellent Vacation" review - it's out tomorrow !!

What is it: Charlaine Harris, Katie MacAlister, Jeaniene Frost, Lilith Saintcrow, and more have worked together to create Death's Excellent Vacation, a new short-story collection filled with stories from the paranormal world. Similar to Wolfsbane and Mistletoe and Many Bloody Returns, the twelve original stories (including a brand-new Sookie Stackhouse story) in Death's Excellent Vacation are based along the same theme - vacations. 

My Take: I am a fan of the Sookie Stackhouse novels, and own every Sookie story that has been published so far. The Sookie story contained within Death's Excellent Vacation is not the best story in the Sookie-verse, but it's still a fun read. Pam and Sookie venture off on what appears to be a girl's getaway but is actually something else entirely (not much of a surprise). The story provides information that I suspect will be fleshed out further in the next Sookie novel. If you have a passion for Eric (like me) you may be disappointed to find that he is barely in this story. A shame.

Although, I was most excited about the Sookie story (as I'm sure many other people are), there are eleven other stories in this book as well. As with any compilation, some stories are better than others. I quite enjoyed Sarah Smith's The Boys Go Fishing, about a lonely immortal coming to grips with being the last of his kind, as well as Katie MacAlister's The Perils of Effrijim, about a demon whose vacation to Paris is ruined when he's banished to another reality.

Although the stories were all written by different authors, I found the entire book an easy, quick read. It's the kind of book that makes for good summer reading while at the beach, the cottage, or just traveling around. Of course, I read it sitting on my couch, and it was equally enjoyable there as well.

Death's Excellent Vacation is set to be released and available for purchase on August 3, 2010.

Crimes by Moonlight, edited by Charlaine Harris

Crimes by Moonlight is an anthology featuring members of the Mystery Writers of America. It was edited by Charlaine Harris, and the stories are all a mix of mystery and the supernatural.

Like every anthology, this one has its ups and downs. I’m a bit picky about short stories, so only a few of these tales really worked for me. Unless you’re the kind of reader who wants to own every story from one of these authors, I’d suggest checking it out from the library first before you buy a copy.

A breakdown of the individual stories is below.

• “Dahlia Underground” by Charlaine Harris
  Dahlia hunts a group of anti-vampire extremists after their successful terrorist attack on a vampire gathering. This takes place shortly after the conclusion of All Together Dead (the seventh Sookie Stackhouse novel), though you don’t have to be familiar with that book to get the story. As a fan of this world, it was great to see some of the aftermath of the vampire summit in Rhodes. But Dahlia is not that easy to connect with and there were some overly convenient turns in the investigation.
