New book release: The Vampire Diaries: The Return: Midnight
The Vampire Diaries: The Return: Midnight will be out this week and, if you haven’t been following the controversy, it’s the last book in TVD series that will be written entirely by L. J. Smith herself (the series is being taken over by a ghostwriter). Personally, I’m all over Whedonistas, a collection of essays by female authors that celebrate the awesomeness of Joss Whedon. And if your into science and gadgets, check out Physics of the Future, which predicts that we will have invisibility cloaks, Internet-accessible contact lenses, modular robots, and flexible paper this century.

With her knack for being in trouble's way, Sookie witnesses the firebombing of Merlotte's, the bar where she works. Since Sam Merlotte is now known to be two-natured, suspicion falls immediately on the anti-shifters in the area. Sookie suspects otherwise, but her attention is divided when she realizes that her lover Eric Northman and his "child" Pam are plotting to kill the vampire who is now their master. Alexander Skarsgård has confirmed that a witch casts a spell and Eric doesn't know who he is."
Alexander Skarsgård has confirmed that Eric will lose his memory in the fourth season of True Blood.
Speaking to Access Hollywood, Skarsgård explained that the situation will make Eric vulnerable.
"I don't think it's a secret that he gets amnesia this season," he said. "A witch casts a spell and he doesn't know who he is."
Skarsgård continued: "I don't want to reveal too much, but he's kind of like a very big baby suddenly. He doesn't know who he is and he needs protection suddenly and you haven't seen that before."
The fourth season of True Blood premieres on June 12 at 9pm on HBO.

Ausiello: Season 4 is “about him dealing with power,” Joe Manganiello shared at PaleyFest over the weekend. “Him dealing with that beast inside of him. The more he lets it out, the more difficult it is to control. You’re going to see him wrestle with that a little more. You also see him wrestle with his feelings for Sookie.” Bonus Manganiello: I hear the in-demand thesp was recently approached about reprising his role as Marshall’s buddy Brad on How I Met Your Mother. Sadly, it doesn’t look like it’ll work out.
Question: What can you tell us about the fourth season of True Blood? —Nanni
Ausiello: I can tell you that a male character has a sex dream involving Jessica and Hoyt but — major twist alert! — “not at the same time,” reveals Hoyt’s portrayer, Jim Parrack.
Question: Can you give me any scoop on True Blood — specifically about Sookie and Eric? —Arden
Ausiello: We grilled Alan Ball about those two at PaleyFest and this was his intriguing response: “Sookie’s got romantic entanglements with a lot of different people. It’s not just Bill and Eric. It’s Alcide now, as well. And I don’t think Sam’s ever completely given up on her either. She is definitely going to grow closer to one individual in particular… [and] I think people who read the books will not be surprised.” Wait a second, no one said this job would require me to read.

Spoiler Chat: Which True Blood Twosome Can Expect Major Angst This Season?
Ventura55: Got any True Blood goodies? Because waiting does really suck!Let's talk to the man himself, Mr. Alan Ball! When we asked about the many loves of Sookie Stackhouse at the 28th Annual William S. Paley Television Festival event for the show, Ball said, "What Sookie (Anna Paquin) said to Bill (Stephen Moyer) at the end of last season, she meant it, and it's going to take a lot from him to win her back if he ever will, and I don't know if he ever will or not. And there are complications with Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) that she didn't see coming, and there are complications with Alcide (Joe Manganiello) she didn't see coming." Ball also told us that our fave vamps need to keep a watchful eye out for witches, because they're joining the show this year, and they're gonna be trouble. Ball says, "I don't think it's a rule that vampires and witches that don't get along, but there are certain witches who are really dabbling in dark, dark magic, necromancy—powers over the dead. So vampires aren't going to like that." Last but not least, it sounds like poor Rutina Wesley is going to have a little more fun this year. Ball tells us, "It's a new Tara [this season]. It's a less victim-y Tara. Tara has healed her wounds a little bit."

Jim tells us, "We're living together, and when I get home from work I find she's been sleeping all day because she has to, and everybody told us there would be problems, but...Deborah and I said before the season, let's make this decision: Let's say we told ourselves, 'It'll never be us. We'll never be that. Our love is bigger and stronger. And now...life is starting to say otherwise.'" Jim also told us, "I like episode three this season; I get to do a great, great scene in that episode. Alan wrote that episode, and I get this wonderful Tennessee Williams-ish scene." But Ball isn't done with him yet, saying, "Well...[Jim] hasn't even begun. Obviously he hasn't read episode seven or eight yet. Those are major. It's not as easy being a couple as perhaps they thought."
alisonwallace: True Blood scoop!We're not feeling so Rosemary's Baby about Arlene's (Carrie Preston) whole pregnancy after talking to Alan Ball. We asked him if Arlene had been impregnated with a demon seed, and Ball said, "I can't tell you yes or no, but there is certainly concern that it might be, and it certainly looks like it might be." And Todd Lowe says, "I don't know if it's devil babies…It's babies. Neonatal, strange, possibly possessed human babies." But here's the thing—as any new mom can tell you, normal human babies behave just like possessed babies, what with the endless screaming and the projectile vomiting. Arlene's probably in the clear, she just won't know it for a while.

True Blood: Joan Jett Heralds The Season Of The Witch from Jef with one F
Alan Ball was known for his masterful use of music in Six Feet Under. He's lost none of his touch when it comes to his current HBO series, True Blood - which happens to be set in the Louisiana swamps, not terribly far from Houston.
After all, once you turn someone's head around 180 degrees during grudge sex so that missionary position becomes some kind of dead-on-the-highway doggy-style, you just can't call a spanking kinky anymore.
To be fair, there were some lacking moments too. The whole fairy storyline had way too many Renaissance Fair moments, and we can't believe that anyone would knowingly leave an extremely pissed-off and powerful vampire king buried alive in concrete and not expect that to come back and haunt them later.
To be fair, we've established that most of the series' protagonists a) aren't terribly bright; and b) have the survival instinct of a lemming on meth listening to This Mortal Coil's It'll End in Tears.
Still, as always we're looking forward to the new season in June, and HBO has finally released a trailer containing the first of the music we'll be covering in this column.

Nelsan Ellis on Season 4
Nelsan Ellis, who plays Bon Temps' sauciest short-order cook, tells us that fans aren't shy about asking him personal questions, "How are you like Lafayette? Are you gay? Do you wear makeup? Are you that sassy? Are you that tough?" He also tells us that the truth is, "I'm just a country boy, and to be a part of something so magnificent and big [as True Blood] is weird for me."
Paquin wants normal boy for Sookie
"None of them," she laughed, speaking before attending a special Q&A with fans in LA.
Standing next to husband Stephen Moyer, who plays vampire Bill Compton on the show, she teased she wants Sookie to find "a nice normal boy, who's not a superhero!"
Fans queued for hours to hear the cast of the hit fantasy show talk at this year's PaleyFest in Beverly Hills.
"I still constantly feel lucky to be a full-time employed actor," Anna admitted.
"I think that in itself is kind of an amazing achievement to be able to say that your full-time career is in any creative arts, let alone a show that has kept people interested for coming on four seasons and hopefully more."
Filming for Season 4 is currently under way. Anna revealed she's loved watching Sookie grow and change as a character.
"I think that's what is really exciting about doing a series," she explained. "You do get more than two and half hours in the life of that character to evolve with them.
"From Season 1, if you just think about where everyone was when we first encountered them until now, everyone has had pretty major life events and changes and it's all very exciting as an actor."

The executive producer of True Blood has promised that the witches in the fourth season will be "dark".
Speaking to E! Online, Alan Ball explained that the new characters may clash with the vampires.
"I don't think it's a rule that vampires and witches don't get along," he said.
"But there are certain witches who are really dabbling in dark, dark magic, necromancy - powers over the dead. So vampires aren't going to like that."
The fourth season of True Blood will begin on June 12 at 9pm on HBO.

'True Blood' season four spoilers from Alan Ball -- well, just a few
The upcoming season of "True Blood" will borrow at least some of its key plot points from "Dead to the World," the fourth novel in mystery writer Charlaine Harris' long-running series about telepathic cocktail waitress/fairy Sookie Stackhouse and the supernatural creatures vying for her affection in Bon Temps, La.
But Alan Ball, the creator of the hit HBO series adapted from Harris' fiction, wasn't too generous with the gory details at the Paley Center for Media's PaleyFest's tribute to the hit show this weekend at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills, especially when it came to questions about just how a potential romance between Anna Paquin's Sookie and Alexander Skarsgard's vampire Eric Northman might play out.
Still, the wildly devoted fans assembled for the event didn't seem to mind. The clip Ball showed from the season premiere, which is set for June, and the presence of 16 of the series' cast members -- including Paquin and her off-screen husband Stephen Moyer, in addition to Skarsgard -- were more than sufficient to generate deafening applause.
