Stephen Moyer: ‘Sharp teeth & sucking blood is sexy, man!’

From Mirror UK

Stephen Moyer was the kind of face you recognised, but couldn’t put a name to. Born in Brentwood, Essex, he started acting in his teens, and for years was a jobbing thesp in the likes of Casualty and even acted in films with Kate Winslet (in Quills) and Al Pacino (in 88 Minutes) – steady work, but nothing to put him on our radar.

Then, in 2008, the 40-year-old was catapulted up the fame ladder into the A-list – and it all happened overnight.

‘One minute I was sitting in London reading a fantastic script for True Blood and two days later I was in Los Angeles and being told I’d got the part,’ he recalls. ‘It was incredible. And yes it has changed my life completely.’

True Blood is based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris and was adapted for TV by Alan Ball, a heavyweight screenwriter well respected for his HBO hit, Six Feet Under.

Set in a world where vampires have ‘come out of the coffin’ and live freely with humans, True Blood is a mix of some of the hottest sex scenes on TV as well as a passionate love story to rival Kathy and Heathcliff. Or even Bella and Edward, if we’re talking vamp/human affairs…

Moyer plays 173-year-old vampire Bill Compton who falls for telepathic waitress Sookie, Anna Paquin. ‘I love playing him,’ says Moyer. ‘Bill is this tortured soul... He’s a pariah in terms of the humans because he’s a vampire. But in the eyes of vampires he’s “mainstreaming” – he’s mixing with humans – and they ostracise him too.’

Sookie, Anna Paquin (who won an Oscar at 11 for her role in The Piano), is a human with a gift. ‘She can read people’s thoughts,’ Stephen explains, ‘but with Bill, she can’t – and that intrigues her.’

From People magazine

When it comes to finding love, True Blood's vampire hunk Alexander Skarsgard is looking for a woman with brains – not fangs! – who likes to laugh.

"A sense of humor is number one for sure," Skarsgard told PEOPLE at the Gucci Icon-Temporary Flash Sneaker store opening in New York City. "Being funny and smart is very important."

Known as the sexiest man alive in his native Sweden, the single actor, 33, is turning heads and causing blood pressures to rise with fans everywhere thanks to his brooding True Blood ego and charming good looks. "It's very flattering," he said of the swooning. "I turn a little pink!"

Though Skarsgard, who's been shooting the film Straw Dogs in Shreveport, La., for the past three months, has been linked romantically to costar Kate Bosworth, the sexy vampire has experienced fervent fan encounters that have ranged from sultry to slightly uncomfortable.

Charlaine Harris "Bitten by Books" interview transcript

If you missed the interview chat last Thursday 'Bitten' has posted the transcript here:
** love the questions about ebook readers!
Interview:

Hi Charlaine!

Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!

I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Charlaine’s newest book A Touch of Dead.

BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?

CH: Challenges? Every day is a challenge. I hate to use a sea metaphor, but being a writer is like being the entire crew of a large ship. To extend that, when you reach your destination in one piece . . . that’s a great reward.

BBB: Do you consider different books paranormal romance or urban fantasy? and do you think it is important to distinguish between the two?

Halloween costume ideas : Goth Vampire make-up Magic

From LA Times
Make your own mask: the vampire

Deadly Dame Vampire

Step 1: "Take the blood out of the skin," says MAC senior makeup artist John Stapleton. To achieve a very pale canvas, he applies the lightest shade of MAC studio fix foundation powder to simultaneously give the skin coverage and a blood-sucked look. Highlight the high planes of the face with a shimmery white shadow to make the face look even more hollow.

Step 2: Get a quick and dramatic smoky eye by using a black gel eyeliner. Apply a thick line to the top and bottom of the eye. "It's OK to be messy because it will all get blended," Stapleton says. Blend the black color at the outer edges of the eye and at the inner corners for a strong, hollow look. Leave the center of the eyelid bare so the inner and outer corners look more dramatic and sinister.

Anna Paquin: Reinventing Herself

From StrangeCulture blog

In my recent post on teen films I discussed how I think teens have a better chance of establishing strong careers by performing in teen oriented films over prestige films.

One of the actresses who I think has done an incredible job at sticking in the Hollywood game after a childhood success story is Anna Paquin.

Anna Paquin became the second youngest person to win an Oscar at the age of 11 for her role in the Piano.

We've got a monster crush

From LA Times
A romantic twilight has cast its spell of late, turning vampires, werewolves and their ilk into heartthrobs -- just in time for Halloween.

Somewhere on the way to today's multiplex, the traditional horror-movie vampire received an extreme makeover.Max Schreck's Count Orlok of 1922's "Nosferatu" -- bald, hunched, with claw-like hands, bug eyes and shark-like teeth -- morphed into the hollow-cheeked, Abercrombie & Fitch model looks of "Twilight's" Robert Pattinson, all James Dean glowering and choreographed hair.

Beautiful vampires populate the small screen as well. HBO's "True Blood," (based on Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse series) has easy-on-the-eyes Stephen Moyer and Alexander Skarsgard and other members of the undead mixing it up in backwater Louisiana, and in the CW's new "Vampire Diaries," comely undead teens walk the halls of Mystic Falls High.

You can hardly hurl a garlic clove at bestseller lists without hitting a cool-blooded hottie like the ones who inhabit the Harris books or P.C. and Kristin Cast's "House of Night" series. And let's face it, when a phenomenon is so ensconced in the zeitgeist that GQ and Esquire feel compelled to visit and at least attempt to explain away the manifestation of metrosexual monsters stealing the hearts and emptying the veins of our womenfolk, you can bet that every book agent and vice president of development is looking for the next paranormal paramour.

Vampire Wars: Who's the Best Evil (Yet Hot) Vampire?

And you’re what, shocked and disappointed? I’m evil." —Spike

From EOnline

Vampire Wars continues! As we explained earlier this week, we've decided that, structurally speaking, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, True Blood and The Vampire Diaries are all the same show. Girl meets soft-hearted vampire, girl enters bizarre world of the occult, girl gets mixed up in some stuff, girl hooks up with hard-bodied other vampire, wackiness (and bloody good scandal) ensues.

But which of those wicked, supersexy vamps is the best? It's time to decide who's the best evil (yet hot) TV series vampire, and you have to make the nearly impossible choice between James Marsters' bitingly funny Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Alex Skarsgård's Viking vampire Eric Northman on True Blood, and Ian Somerhalder's devilish Damon on The Vampire Diaries.

there might be some polling going on too ;-)

Vampire Mania: What's really behind the current vampire craze?

From Forbes

The latest vampire movie, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant, opens Friday. This caps a rather otherworldly streak of vampire-related entertainment, including Twilight, HBO's True Blood and the CW's Vampire Diaries.

But that's not all, folks! The Twilight sequel, New Moon, is being hyped ad nauseam for a Nov. 20 release date. Lionsgate's Daybreakers, about a plague that turns everyone into vampires, will hit theaters in January 2010.

A Hamlet-inspired vampire flick, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Undead, should be out next year. Mom's Got a Date with a Vampire is a 2000 movie that's been rerunning on The Disney ( DIS - news - people ) Channel. And just in case your jones for all things vampire isn't yet sated, you can suck up vampire-themed wine (True Blood Napa Valley Syrah, anyone?), vampire vodka, vampire chocolate, vampire coffee and so on.

Our deep, dark obsession with Vampires

From USA Weekend (it's almost Halloween so expect lots of articles)

Garlic, crosses, daylight and a good decapitation are supposed to be weaknesses for a vampire, but in today's pop culture, the modern bloodsuckers seem unstoppable.

It has been 112 years since Irish novelist Bram Stoker's classic, "Dracula," first swooped into European bookshops, a literary amalgam of the history of Vlad III Dracula, Prince of Wallachia (aka Vlad the Impaler), with a dash of Romanian folklore. That iconic character has given rise to many interpretations, from Bela Lugosi's and Christopher Lee's cinematic takes on "Dracula," to the vamps on the TV cult hits "Dark Shadows" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," and even the Count on "Sesame Street" and Count Chocula of breakfast cereal fame.

These days, though, vampires are swarming like bats out of you-know-where, especially the mega-popular book-to-screen vamps of "Twilight," "True Blood" and "The Vampire Diaries." With more than 70 million books sold, Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" series is a full-fledged phenomenon, particularly among teens. The first "Twilight" movie adaptation grossed nearly $200 million in theaters last fall, which bodes well for next month's sequel, "New Moon." "True Blood," based on Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse novels, completed its second season in September and is HBO's second-most-watched series ever, behind The Sopranos. And more people watched the debut episode of CW's "The Vampire Diaries" than any premiere in the network's history.
