The Etruscan Roots of The Twilight Saga

hmm... Tuscany or Shreveport....? Hard decision ;-)
From Independent UK

Were there vampires in Volterra? Probably not, but the Etruscans had their own brigade of gods and demons representing night, death and resurrection.

'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' release fuels vampire mania around the world. While teenagers go completely nuts over the film's hunky vampire Edward (Robert Pattinson) – one wrote 'bite me' on her face as she queued with 5,000 others to see him in London last week – other die-hard fans of the Twilight books, written by Stephenie Meyers, are also descending on the small hill-top town of Volterra, in Tuscany, where some of the action of the film is set (even though filming actually took place in Montepulciano, 70 miles away). As a result, hoards of teenagers have been visiting Volterra – a town with Etruscan roots and its own heritage of Etruscan demons, gods and goddesses associated with death, resurrection and the night.

The Twilight Saga isn't the only vampire story to grace our screens lately. The popular US series True Blood – about a young woman in Louisiana who also falls in love with a vampire – based on the The Southern Vampire Mysteries series of novels by Charlaine Harris, also gathered cult status, adding to the growing body of vampire fiction on our bookshelves and on our screens. The nineties saw the likes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Interview with a Vampire, Bram Stoker's Dracula as well as From Dusk Till Dawn. The 21st century has seen vampire fever take over with Van Helsing, more Buffy and now Twilight and True Blood.

'Twilight,' 'True Blood' take opposing approaches to vampire sex

From the Dallas Morning News ( right here in Area 6)

Edward, the undead hero of the Twilight movies and books, broods and simmers like a James Dean starter kit. Jacob, his werewolf foil, sports six-pack abs and looks as if he's been bench-pressing pickups. But they might as well be hanging out in a nunnery for all the action they get. Their chaste love interest, Bella, can only pine.

Then there's Sookie Stackhouse, the spitfire waitress at the heart of HBO's cult series True Blood (based on novels by Charlaine Harris). As Bella chills in the Pacific Northwest, Sookie gets hot and heavy with her vampire beau Bill in steamy Louisiana. No repression here: The deliciously campy True Blood, which enters its third season next year, just says yes. (It also indulges in every last one of HBO's relaxed content allowances. As the ads say, it's not TV.)

Bella Bella! Beauties and their beasts

From Independent UK

A record-breaking number of filmgoers has been bitten this weekend by the film New Moon, the latest instalment in the Twilight saga. Teenage hearts both sides of the Atlantic have been set fluttering by the vampire tales featuring the British actor Robert Pattinson.

His co-star, Kristen Stewart, has her own, growing following. She reprises her role as Bella Swann in the new film, continuing her celibate on-screen love affair with Edward Cullen, a vampire with a heart.

The couple's chemistry – and the fact their passion is unlikely to be consummated – is driving the film's success, as it did the multimillion-selling books they first appeared in.

8 Shows that Are Creepy in a Good Way

Some shows are creepy just because, well, they're icky to think about. Like 'The Girls Next Door' (twins sleeping with the same old guy!) or 'Hoarders' (the ultimate pack-rats!). Then there are shows that are frightening, but in a good way. Read on for eight such shows that make you look under the bed at night, avoid cemeteries, and ponder alternate universes.

'Ghost Whisperer'
Things were always a bit scary for Melinda Gordon and her spiritual buddies, but this show has upped the fright factor with the Shinies, the Book, and the mysterious Shadows who not only attack people (including Melinda), but can also possess bodies. And you'd better not talk about them, or they'll do bad things to your relatives! At this point, simply helping spirits into the light must seem like frolicking through a sunny field of daisies for Melinda.

Zombie and vampire flu in Sweden. Alexander Skarsgård and Ann-Sofie Back infected.

A terrible virus that turns people, mortals in this case, into mindless zombies or bloodsucking vampires has become a threat in Sweden. It is still unclear as to how the virus came to the country but the virus has become left an imprint on Swedish culture, showing up in TV shows, movies and even on the runway.

The well-known actor Alexander Skarsgård was already infected in 2008 when he began playing evil vampire Eric Northman in the TV-show “True Blood,” which recently aired on Swedish television. It appears that he is in the recovery process, as his normal complexion has returned during the breaks in between shooting. read on

Vampires Are Hot Hollywood Property To The Tune Of Nearly $800 Million

from Access Hollywood

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --
According to legend, vampires may be elusive creatures, but in Hollywood those fangtastic bloodsuckers are the new mainstream.

According to a new report on The Daily Beast, Vampire franchises are hot to the tune of nearly $800 million a year.

The Web site reported on Friday that the “Twilight” franchise, which just opened its latest installment, “New Moon,” is worth a fat $500 million a year at the movies.

HBO’s “True Blood,” based on Charlaine Harris’ “Sookie Stackhouse” books, is the most successful series on the network since “The Sopranos,” and the Daily Beast estimates it brings in a likely $50 million a year. The CW’s new hit show “The Vampire Diaries,” is estimated to take in $20 million.

And as the shows and movies continue to gain strength, book sales are boosted as well.

Between “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer, Harris and a number of additional popular franchises such as “The Vampire Academy” and “Vampire Hunter,” the Daily Beast estimates the publishing industry adds in another $100 million.

ENGLISH UNDEAD

From The Washington Times and from the British Ambassador ( not kidding )

ENGLISH UNDEAD

Is there something inherently evil about an English accent?

The British ambassador doesn't think so, but he is seeing what he calls a "cinematic trend" in Hollywood where the latest, chic vampire movies feature English actors.

Rather than complain about the typecasting,Ambassador Nigel Sheinwald welcomes the exposure for young, talented British actors and expects the trend to continue.

"It seems an immutable law of Hollywood that the finest baddies in American film are always played by Brits. I'm not sure exactly why - there is nothing inherently menacing, I think, about an English accent," he wrote on his blog at http://blogs.fco. gov.uk/roller/sheinwald.

He was inspired to muse on the fame of British bloodsuckers with the release of the second installment of the vampire saga, "Twilight." British actor Robert Pattinson plays the young vampire,Edward Cullen, in his star-crossed romance with Bella Swan, played by American actress Kristen Stewart.

"This spectacular teen drama ... has attracted, in some circles, as much attention as the current health care debate (although being undead would still presumably be classed as a pre-existing condition?)," Mr. Sheinwald quipped.

He also noted that another English actor, Stephen Moyer, has "proved a tremendous hit" as vampire Bill Compton in the HBO series, "True Blood."

British actors have a long history of portraying Dracula, who, according to legend, was Romanian. Nevertheless, the English accent stuck, like the cape, the bat and a stake through the heart. Christopher Lee played the vampire count, popularized by the Irish novelistBram Stoker in 1897, in several films in the 1950s and Gary Oldman continued the tradition, playing Dracula in a 1992 film.

Mr. Sheinwald wondered whether this was really just a coincidence or something more "cryptic."

"Could it be the British climate creates the pale and pasty complexion necessary to portray authentically Bram Stoker's monster?" he asked. "Or is it our 'deadpan' humor, putting the grave in graveyard, that makes us British especially suited to vampire kitsch?"

Mr. Sheinwald concluded with confidence that British actors will continue to enjoy stardom in Hollywood.

"The 'stakes' may be high," he said, "but you my most definitely 'count' on it!"

Lionsgate Films has released a new TV spot for the forthcoming much anticipated vampire film Daybreakers. Set in the year 2019,Daybreakers shows us a future where vampires rule the world and humans have been driven to near extinction.
