Tribute to Golden Globe award winner

Tuesday, January 13, 2009, 10:23

BRENTWOOD Theatre's patron Stephen Moyer has paid tribute to fellow actor Anna Pacquin who was among the winners at the prestigious Golden Globe Awards.

The homegrown Hollywood star is delighted Anna won the Golden Globe after she performed alongside him in the American television series True Blood.

Anna – best known for winning an Oscar at the age of 11 for her role in The Piano – won the prestigious award for playing Sookie Stackhouse, a waitress who falls for a vampire.

He said: "I am so pleased for Anna. This series has been so well received in America and it is great that the critics recognise its impact.

"Last week, we started filming series two which means I will be in LA until July, although I will return to Brentwood for the launch of True Blood in April in the UK, when is goes out on The FX Channel.True Blood is based on books written by author Charlaine Harris and fans of the series have donated nearly £4,000 in two months to Brentwood Theatre. This includes a large donation from the bestselling author.

Golden Globes glitz 'n misses

..they forget that Stephen is already "Bill" and must maintain the exact same physical appearance as last season ( or when he was change over to being a vampire after the Civil War, for that matter )

I prefer aubergine to describe the color of the lovely Anna's dress -some how True Blood watchers just don't want to think of eggplants !

* Scruffy, unshaven looks on the red carpet are a turn-off to Style Matters, but they were definitely a trend. See Stephen Moyer (True Blood), Steve Carell (The Office), Jeremy Piven (Entourage) and Colin Farrell (Hey, Colin, lose the gum!).

* Anna Paquin (True Blood) was a knockout in a classic updo and elegant dress in an eggplant shade.

True Blood to resume filming in Louisiana!

BATON ROUGE

The HBO television series “True Blood” starring Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer is in pre-production in the Baton Rouge area and will shoot portions of the series in Louisiana in February, April and June.

"Generation Kill" pulls off the Iraq War story

Difficult balance: Generation Kill plays out the thrill of combat, set against the wanton waste of life and senselessness of the battles being fought.

It doesn’t seem like it’s time yet to be watching television and films about the Iraq War for entertainment, does it? It is, after all, still dragging on, and if the electronic media weren’t mostly mirroring the inevitable fatigue many home-front Americans feel, we could watch the real thing on the news every night. And even casual film fans know the lore that it took years for Hollywood to be able to handle the Vietnam War with anything like success; the feeble first attempts to make Iraq War features have kept audiences away in droves and made such distance seem like a necessary rule. Perhaps that’s why one of the most well-made and timely television productions of 2008 seemed to land without a sound, with little water-cooler chatter to its credit and no serious media buzz to its name. The recent DVD release of Generation Kill offers a chance to put this situation right.

Interview with the Vampire…Author: Charlaine Harris

January 13th, 2009

Bite Me.

I recently had the privilege of a brief interview with the author of the Sookie Stackhouse novels, which were adapted into the HBO show - True Blood. Mrs. Harris is a talented writer who has brought vampires into the modern age in a sophisticated and relevant way, and True Blood on HBO is the latest television work from creator Alan Ball.

YFS:
“First off, what was the impetus for writing the The Sookie Stackhouse stories?”

Charlaine Harris:
“I’d been writing conventional mysteries for many years, and I wanted a career change and a personal challenge.”

YFS:
“What is it about the vampire mythos that remain so intriguing to readers/viewers?”

Charlaine Harris:
“I think everyone’s interested in immortality, especially in this youth-obsessed society. Also, the image of the vampire is inextricable from one of the favorite images in American romance, the “bad boy.” He’s secretly sensitive and (amazingly) senses how special YOU are, when that’s not apparent to others around you. Under his rough exterior lurks someone who’ll defend you to the death, etc.”

YFS:
“The character name Sookie Stackhouse is one of the most colorful and memorable character names I have ever heard or read. How did you come up with such an interesting lead character?”

Charlaine Harris:
“It took a lot of mental work to build Sookie. I built her backwards, once I’d decided I wanted to write about a girl who was dating a vampire. After that basic decision, I had to answer a series of questions about her — Why was she doing such a dangerous thing? Why couldn’t she date the guy who works at the filling station? The answer, that Sookie had a disability that made a regular dating career impossible, led to another series of questions. In the end, I arrived at Sookie’s life situation and her character.”

YFS: “How did your books turn into one of the best new shows on HBO? What was the process, from your perspective, of having the novels translated to the television format? And how involved are you with the production process?”

Charlaine Harris: “I’m not involved in the production process at all. In return, Alan doesn’t tell me how to write my books. It works for us.

Alan read the books and loved them, his agent called my agent, and after the previous option on the books expired, we made a deal. Alan assured me he would stay true to the spirit of the novels, and I knew that strict adherence to my text would not be filmable. I knew going in there would be changes. I enjoy being surprised.”

YFS: “What’s next for you? What new things are you writing on, and will you be working on anything we can expect to see on film or TV in the future?”

Charlaine Harris: “I’ve finished Sookie Nine (DEAD AND GONE) and it’ll be on the shelves in May. I have a Harper Connelly novel, the fourth, in October. I’m in an anthology called MUST LOVE HELLHOUNDS, which should be out in September or October. Some of my books are being looked at for film projects, but that’s an ongoing process.”

YFS: “Favorite vampire movie?”

Charlaine Harris: “Hmmmm. I don’t think I’ve got a favorite. There were things I liked about several vampire movies, but there were also flaws that I disliked. I have to say that “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” TV show has been my favorite.”

Big thanks to Mrs. Harris for speaking to us. If you missed the first season of True Blood, be sure to catch up on one of the hottest new shows before next season. Also, visit Charlaine’s website for more info on her novels : http://www.charlaineharris.com/

A little season two teaser from Sam at the Globes

Question: Thanks for telling us that True Blood started shooting its second season last week, but could you tell me when the episodes will start airing? -- Katie
Ausiello:
This summer, which means season 2 will air roughly eight months after the conclusion of season 1 -- a lightning fast turnaround by cable standards. "Alan Ball is a very fast writer," explains an HBO source. In other True Blood news, I caught up with Sam Trammell (Sam) at the Globes and he teased that his new love interest (played by The Bold and The Beautiful's Ashley Jones) is up to no good. "I don't know the whole storyline, but I've read the first three episodes, and it's going to be really twisted and dark and exciting. She's got some serious secrets and questionable intentions."
