Literary Lovers Mash-Up: Sookie & Edward Cullen

Today, we have our final story from our Literary Lovers Mash-Up Writing Contest entries. We asked you to write about two literary lovers meeting OR falling in love for the first time in about 500 words.

Today’s entry comes from P.Q. Glisson — whose story reads like a really cool, extremely well-written crossover fan fiction. P.Q. introduces a meeting between Sookie Stackhouse from The Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris & Edward Cullen from Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. I have to admit, the encounter written here is one I’ve imagined myself. Fans of both series will find something to giggle over here. Plus, the story is written in such a way that it’s meant to fit in with the existing story arch of both series.

Vampire-Inspired Sunglasses

How can you NOT want these ?

Some things just never get old, like vampires or a great pair of sunglasses. So in the interest of things both timeless and timely, we submit designer Sheefun Chan’s eye-popping collaboration with Ann Sofie Back.

No, your eyes are not playing tricks on you — these Cullen-approved sunnies are actually are supposed to look like they’re are dripping blood. Of course, Chan isn’t the first to be bitten by the vampire bug and tap the sartorial power of the undead, but even if late to the bloodsucking love-fest, these tinted glasses still manage to pack a serious bite.

And considering the current paleness of our pallor, these might just be the perfect pair to hide behind before venturing out into sun. Be still our Twi-Heart.

Get vamped and pick up your pair at Opening Ceremony.

HBO anounces True Blood comic

Although it's now been officially announced at WonderCon, news trickled out a little early on the HBO website and on Twitter that IDW Publishing will release a six-issue miniseries based on the hit drama True Blood.

What's more, the show's fans may buy the comic through the HBO Shop, which has the July debut issue available for pre-order.

The title is co-plotted by True Blood creator Alan Ball and series writers Elisabeth Finch and Kate Barnow, and written by David Tischman (Bite Club) and IDW Associate Editor Mariah Huehner. It's illustrated by David Messina (Star Trek: Countdown), with covers by Messina and J. Scott Campbell.

True Blood, which debuted on the cable network in September 2008, is based on the bestselling Southern Vampire Mysteries novels by Charlaine Harris. Set in the fictional small town of Bon Temps, Louisiana, the critically acclaimed drama details the tense co-existence of humans and vampires -- and the occasional shapeshifter -- focusing primarily on the web of relationships surrounding telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin). In its two seasons, True Blood has become HBO's most-watched series since The Sopranos.

The IDW miniseries takes place on a hot, rainy night at Merlotte's bar, where Sookie, Bill, Eric -- really, Eric? -- Sam, Tara, Jason and Lafayette are trapped by a vengeful spirit that feeds on shame, and forced to dredge up dirty secrets and dark memories from their pasts. I'm just grateful Eggs isn't involved. (However, a little Lettie Mae wouldn't be a bad thing.)

The third season of True Blood debuts on June 13.

New revealing review of 'Dead in the Family '

Dead in the Family
Charlaine Harris
Ace, May 4 2010, $25.95
ISBN: 9780441018642

Sookie Stackhouse, like many of Bon Temps, Louisiana residents, remains in shock as much from the torture she received as from the grief she feels following the fae war that left so many Dead and Gone. Among those who died is Sookie’s fairy cousin, Claudine. Much of the surviving Faes went home.

Meanwhile the late Claudine’s triplet Claude asks Sookie if he can move in with her; she unenthusiastically agrees. The Feds want better control of the paranormal two-nature Werewolf packs with designated registries. This upsets the Were population that fears hunting season. Sookie’s lover vampire Eric Northman has problems when his creator the newly named Vampire King Appius Livius Ocella accompanied by Alexei Romanov arrives without warning, an invitation or an explanation,

Dead in the family is a superb entry in the Sookie saga albeit a bit less action (and deaths) than the previous thriller. The story line focuses on what is a modern paranormal extended family and how politics by those claiming the righteous right of patriotism to intrude within the family under the guise of security. Fans will enjoy this thought provoking urban fantasy as Sookie has little time to heal.

Anna Paquin and Joe Mangiello

Ladies, start your Sookie/Pam slashfic: Anna Paquin says she’s bisexual

From our friends at Camp Blood

OMG, what is that old traditionalist Bill Compton gonna have to say about THIS?!

Oh, I know: “SOOKIIEEEEEEHHHHH!”

In a rather unexpected moment of candor, Anna Paquin told the world that she is bisexual while recording a video PSA for the True Colors Fund, the LGBT visibility and awareness group started by the awesome (and totally straight) Cyndi Lauper.

Apparently no one was expecting Paquin to bring such a personal element to the PSA, as she has apparently never mentioned being bisexual in an interview before. Go Anna!

Anna Paquin: Every Vampire's Dream Date

True Blood’s leading lady Anna Paquin straddles with masked man (with a rabbit face!) in the April 2010 issue of GQ UK.

Happy Easter!

The 27-year-old actress explains why every episode of her hit HBO series is so sexual. “Obviously, if you’re getting into vampire sex, which usually involves biting — the taking — then, yeah, clearly there’s some interest from both parties into maybe a more risque style of lovemaking and sex. But on another level, if you take away the pervier aspect of it, the sex is the deepest way these two people can be connected. You know, they’re not just f–king, they’re sucking each other’s blood. It’s all very romantic! I mean, I love you so much that I’m going to let you drink my blood? Nothing says ‘I love you’ more than a cup of freshly drawn blood. It’s very sweet.”

True Blood HBO Canada

A slew of misfits - both human and supernatural - bring even more mayhem to Bon Temps, Louisiana, when the third season of HBO's hit series True Blood premieres on Sunday, June 13 at 9 p.m. ET/MT on HBO Canada, a multiplex channel of Astral Media's The Movie Network (Eastern Canada) and Corus Entertainment's Movie Central (Western Canada).

True Blood is executive produced and created by Oscar(R)- and Emmy(R)-winner Alan Ball, and is based on the best-selling Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris. The series follows the sexy, intense and wildly entertaining tale of a small Louisiana town where vampires live openly amongst their human counterparts, thanks to the invention of mass-produced synthetic blood.

In the season two finale, Maryann's (Michelle Forbes) wild wedding party came to a bloody and violent end resulting in the long overdue demise of the feared maenad; the townspeople of Bon Temps finally snapped out of Maryann's dangerous trance; Queen Sophie-Anne (Evan Rachel Wood) issued a clear warning to Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) telling him to keep the lid on who's really dealing vampire blood to humans; and vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) and Sookie Stackhouse's (Anna Paquin) love story seemed to come full circle with a romantic marriage proposal - that is, until Bill suddenly disappeared in the season finale cliff hanger.

True Blood also stars Ryan Kwanten, Sam Trammell, Rutina Wesley, Nelsan Ellis, Carrie Preston, Deborah Ann Woll, Todd Lowe, Jim Parrack, William Sanderson and Chris Bauer. The first in a series of embeddable tease videos for the third season of True Blood is now available on HBOCanada.com at www.hbocanada.com/trueblood. These 20- to 30-second promotional spots, which offer a behind-the-scenes sneak peek at Season 3, will appear every Monday online for six consecutive weeks, as well as on the network.

The first spot, featuring Skarsgard as vampire Eric Northman, is now available at: http://hbocanada.com/trueblood/video.php.

Charlaine Harris talks about Dead in the Family -she talks "The Eric procedure " and regrets the blood bond

Charlaine Harris, author of "The Sookie Stackhouse Series", holds a very special place in each of our hearts here at Paperback Doll's. We have met so many great people through discussing her books and have enjoyed going to various signings and events where this beloved author appears. Lastbite podcast and Sookiestackhouse.com are run by some of those very friends we have met through the books. Our friends were fortunate enough to interview Charlaine recently and gave us permission to share it with you all here on PBD.

Interview

Q. We wanted to ask you about a couple of your upcoming short stories. Can you please tell us about your short stories coming up in Crimes by Moonlight and Death's Excellent Vacation?
CH. Sure, in Death's Excellent Vacation is a Sookie story and it's a Sookie and Pam road trip. So, it was just really a lot of fun to write. The story in Crimes by Moonlight is a Dahlia story. This will be the 4th or 5th story I've written about her. She's just itty bitty but totally marshal and I just love that.

Q: Can you also tell us a little bit about the novella that revolves around Quinn in the upcoming Sookie Companion book?
CH: It doesn't revolve around Quinn, but he's in it. It's about the wedding of Sam's brother. It's called "Small Town Wedding."

Anna Paquin comes out as bisexual in new PSA

Don't ask me ....??? 'We give a damn' web site has been taken down or has crashed.

If Anna Paquin’s sultry portrayal of virginal vamp lover in HBO’s hit series True Blood isn’t enough to make all the fanboys and girls adore her, the actress “came out” as bisexual in a recent gay rights PSA launched today.

Organizers say that Paquin’s announcement during the January 30th taping came as a surprise. In the clip (below), Paquin adorably states, “I’m Anna Paquin. I’m bisexual and I give a damn.” The PSA is part of the “Give a Damn” campaign, promoted by the True Colors Fund, which is an organization to promote awareness about gay, lesbian and transgender rights.

Paquin’s current gig also happens to be on a show that does a lot in and of itself to subtly promote gay rights. Creator Alan Ball is openly gay, and the show frequently veers into big honking allegory territory with its portrayal of vampire rights in America. (Some find it heavy handed, but fans tend to think it endearing.) A story arc during the last season saw two main characters discussing a trip to Vermont to marry, as human/vampire marriages were not permitted in the rest of the country. (And the opening sequence famously features a sign that reads “God Hates Fangs.”)

Paquin is currently engaged to True Blood co-star Stephen Moyer, who fans will know as Vampire Bill.

Stephenie Meyer's new vampire book will benefit the Red Cross

When Stephenie Meyer published "Breaking Dawn," it brought to an end her wildly popular "Twilight" vampire saga. So any new book in the pantheon is both unexpected and welcome. On Tuesday, fans were thrilled to learn that "The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner," a new novella, will be available in June.

"Her story is a nice complement to 'Eclipse'," the third book in the "Twilight" saga, Meyer writes on her website. "It explains a lot of the things that Bella never knew."

The movie "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" is scheduled to hit screens at the end of June. And in the weeks prior, readers can get their hands on the new book.

The existence of "The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner" was so closely guarded that actress Jodelle Ferland, who read it as help for playing Bree in the "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," burned the manuscript once she was finished (Meyer has a photo of her with the soggy ashes).

Now that it's out there, Meyer is making two charitable moves with the novella. From June 7 to July 5 it will be available for free download at breetanner.com. Secondly, for each actual sale of the book -- which costs around $10 online -- $1 will be donated to the American Red Cross. On her website, Meyer specifies that the donation will be designated to provide relief to victims of the earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, and others in need.

In addition to supplying emergency relief, one of the primary missions of the American Red Cross is "the collection, processing and distribution of lifesaving blood and blood products." Now doesn't that sound exactly like something a troupe of vampires would approve of?
