Sony has announced that the firm has secured a deal with American TV Network HBO allowing PlayStation 3 owners to stream shows from the network on their consoles.
HBO is home to a number of today’s hottest TV properties including vampire series True Blood, and marks the latest in a series of deals between Sony and networks in a bid to expand the PS3’s multimedia capabilities.
SCEA boss Jack Tretton commented: "HBO is a high-profile content provider, and a real premium service, so we think this really reinforces that the PlayStation is more than just a video-game console now."
"It gives consumers that big-screen, HD experience in the home on a device other than cable and satellite, and that's becoming the norm now as opposed to the exception."
“Networks like HBO can be beholden to the cable and satellite companies, or they can play wherever the consumers play,” he added.
Meanwhile, HBO Home’s Henry McGee revealed that an episode of True Blood would be made available for $2.99, while episodes for other TV dramas would clock in at around 99 cents per episode.
"We can use this platform to reinforce the premium positioning for HBO," commented McGee.
"The download business in general has become an important profit contributor for us. It's not yet nearly as large as the physical sales channel, but the trend is a good one."
No word yet on whether Europeans can expect something similar, though we'll be sure to keep you posted.

True Blood Season 2 Blu-ray includes social networks
The new True Blood Season 2 Blu-ray Disc has a social networking feature that fans of the HBO series can really sink their teeth into: automatic updates to their Facebook and Twitter accounts.
Described as the most extensive Facebook-linking feature in a Blu-ray Disc so far, the True Blood Live Feed sends updates to Facebook and Twitter as viewers watch the episodes. Each of the 12 episodes has at least eight scenes that can be posted to Facebook, too, direct from the discs.
One of HBO's most popular series, True Blood averaged 5 million viewers per first-run episode. The tale of vampires and other supernatural happenings in the Louisiana bayou has more than 1.5 million friends on Facebook, which now has a countdown to the June 13 third-season premiere.
"For True Blood, we have such engaged and passionate fans that we really wanted to provide them with a way to extend the fiction beyond what they see in the show," says HBO's Sofia Chang, "and share that passion with their friends."

True Blood Season 2 DVD review from the Washington POst
Anna Paquin has a great Southern accent. The actress, who was born in Canada and grew up in New Zealand, manages to incorporate a regional twang in her dialogue as Sookie Stackhouse, the heroine of the HBO series "True Blood," without it sounding labored or exaggerated. In fact, it sounds less like a Hollywood version of a Southern accent than the real thing itself.
That's just one of the reasons why Paquin makes such a good heroine for this deep-fried soap opera, and why "True Blood" is so much more than simply another entry in the exsanguinated vampire trend. Better than "Twilight" (the movies and the books), better than "The Vampire Diaries," the series may trade on its Southern setting for a few laughs, but it never disdains its characters, their predicaments or any of its potentially silly fantastical elements, from vampires to the churches that arise to combat them.
The first season was a surprise hit for HBO, which had been struggling to find a show as popular as "The Sopranos" and "Sex in the City." On the surface, "True Blood" shouldn't work — or at least not as well as it does. Sookie, a chaste waitress who can read minds, falls in love with a 150-year-old vampire named Bill, whose Old South origins make him the model of a gentleman. And yet, it's not so much a love story as a story of love under unusual circumstances.

Ball promises 'True Blood' surprises
Alan Ball has promised that fans will be surprised by the third season of True Blood.
Although the series is based on books by Charlaine Harris, Ball explained that readers of the novels will not know what is coming up in the programme.
"For people who read the book, they'll be surprised who kidnapped Bill," Ball told Zap2It. "We definitely have used the plot from the book as a starting point, but we have done a lot differently as well."
Ball added that the team behind the television series made a decision to expand on the stories told in the novels.
"Part of our challenge is that the books are basically Sookie's story," he said. "And they're not anyone else's story outside of how they interact with Sookie. We're always looking for a way to create stories for the other characters and at the same time unify everything that keeps all the characters involved with each other as much as we can."
He continued: "Our cast just continues to expand, so it's a challenge finding a way to serve everybody. But I think that's part of the appeal of the show, that there are so many different characters with so many different stories, so there's something for everybody."
Ball also dropped hints about what is to come in the third season of the show.

Interview with Allan " Godric" Hyde
Danish Actor Allan Hyde talks about filming the TV series “True Blood”, hanging out with celebrities and how it is to be part of an American super success
Tonight Allan Hyde is on the TV screen in “True Blood” as the 2000 year old tattooed vampire Godric, one of the lead roles in the second season of the popular series. For the 20 year old actor it was a great experience to be involved in filming in Hollywood, even though it was overwhelming while it was underway.
The requirements are very different there than at home where it is normal for actors to work closely with the director about their role. On “True Blood”, it was expected that you develop it yourself.
“I had to play a major role, as people had high expectations of an huge American series, and I got no help- no one to blame if things went wrong. So to give myself a little peace of mind I wrote a long email to the writer Alan Ball where I mapped my thoughts in terms of Godric and asked for advice a couple of places. Just to see if I was on track. It was me, ” says Allan Hyde to Tjektv from the U.S.
Although it was unrelenting work for everyone, and nerves became frayed, both actors and crew were incredibly responsive to Allan Hyde’s surprise, he had feared that the well-known actors would feel better than the rest of the team, but this was not the case.
“Everyone joked and had fun, talked about personal things and gave good advice. If I have to mention specific people I hung out with, it will be Lenny, my stand-in, but also Alexander Skarsgård, Mariana Klaveno, Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin. Actually all of them I had scenes with,” says Allan Hyde to Tjektv.

“TRUE BLOOD” AND HANK WILLIAMS III – A MATCH MAKE IN “HELLBILLY” HEAVEN
Hank Williams III has a new CD coming out soon. Rebel Within will hit the street May 25th, but we’ll also get a taste of it come June when the ultra-cool Vampire series, True Blood returns for the new season (we so can’t wait!).
The debut of Rebel Within will coincide with Williams’ upcoming Canadian tour, which begins June 4th in Toronto.
True Blood returns June 13th on HBO.
