BLOODlust Finale Episode! True Blood S:3 Ep:12 Recap

'True Blood' 's Rutina Wesley Recalls Early 'Fame,' On 'When I Was 17' Before she fought vampires, the actress got her start at a performing-arts high school.

Rutina Wesley is probably best known for her recent work on "True Blood," where she plays Tara Thornton, the spirited, sass-tacular sidekick of Sookie Stackhouse. But before that, she impressed on the Broadway stage and starred in the 2007 film "How She Move," both of which showed off her first passion: dance.

Wesley grew up in Las Vegas, the daughter of a tap-dancing father and a showgirl mother, and as a teen, she attended the prestigious Las Vegas Academy, a performing-arts school, where prospective students must audition to be accepted. Naturally, she danced to get her spot.

The Man Behind the Music of HBO's "True Blood," Gary Calamar, Part 2 "True Blood" music supervisor, Gary Calamar, talks Led Zeppelin, record stores and spooky music.

Creatively speaking, where do you draw from other than the script itself, do you have a wall of records you talk to or how do you generate your ideas?
Yes. Sometimes I actually do that. My last resort, I just stand next to the wall of music and just sort of close my eyes and hope for a miracle. But, yeah after I read the script and we see a rough cut, different scenes just kind of reach out and kind of call out for different types of music. You know, a fight going on at Merlotte's or if there's some sort of party at Lafayette's or whatever it happens to be. I have that idea of what the overall sound of "True Blood" is so I... find the right songs. Then I'll play them for Alan Ball and he'll kind of make the final decision of what he thinks works. And then the next step for me is actually clearing them, and getting the license and negotiating the deal and all that.
Right, the glamorous part?
Yeah, it's not that bad but I guess you could say it's less glamorous, but definitely a huge part of the job.
I suppose your other job, DJ'ing at KCRW must help with your approach to finding the right songs.

Yeah, I've been at the station for a good, not quite 15 years yet, but probably 13 years or so. I'm always listening for new music to play on the show. The big difference between the radio show and the TV work is that I don't have to work by committee on the radio show. I'm the DJ, I can play what I want and suffer or get praised by that. With a TV show it's much more of a collaboration and the song that I might think is perfect may get shot down and vice versa. But yeah KCRW is an amazing thing for me to have been doing all this time. On "Six Feet Under" there was a song that got a lot of attention by Sia called "Breathe Me," the final song on the final episode. That was actually a song that I had been playing on KCRW for a good 6 months before we used it in "Six Feet Under."
Is your process with "True Blood" any different from what it was with say, "Weeds" or "Six Feet Under?"

'True Blood' Stars Share Their Season Four Wish Lists Alexander Skarsgård, Nelsan Ellis and others speculate on who'll find supernatural powers next.

Oh, "True Blood," why does your season have to end so quickly! It seems like just yesterday fans were counting down the days to the season-three premiere. Alas, the new episodes have come and gone, but that doesn't mean we don't have fresh news and intel straight from our favorite HBO castmembers themselves! When MTV News caught up with the merry, wise-cracking bunch recently, we asked them what might be on their wish lists for next season, as well as a few details about co-stars and witches, etc.
"Well, if you read the books you know that next season is all about fightin' witches," Nelsan Ellis teased about season four's fun new plotline. "So we shall see," he said.
But will we get to see Lafayette and Hoyt get involved in that?
Jim Parrack (Hoyt) offered to demonstrate his skills right away.
"I'll fight a witch right now," he said. "I'll fight a witch tonight!"
"Maybe," Ellis added, sounding skeptical about Parrack's fighting ways. "And maybe Hoyt is a witch."

True Blood’s Joe Manganiello Discusses His Beard in Great Detail

Man, lots with Joe ( Dallas IS NOT complaining !)

Joe Manganiello just wrapped his first season on True Blood, playing Alcide the hunky, sometimes naked werewolf. We caught up with him this Fashion Week at the G-Star Raw show, where he was sporting his trademark not-too-long, not-too-short, always-the-same facial hair, and took the opportunity to ask every question we could think of about it.
You always have this beard the same length. Is that part of your look?
Yeah. I mean, I read the books, and this is how the character was described in the books. When I showed up I wanted to be as close to that mark as possible, and then you kind of put your own stink on it, and make him look the way you think he should look. And there’s kind of a reclusive, construction-working, woodsy, kind of, you know, secretive guy, so I figured a beard would work.

5 Operas That Are Truly Bloodier Than 'True Blood'

Hundreds of thousands — maybe gazillions — of fans of True Blood might be feeling a little anemic right about now, what with season three of the wildly popular HBO show having wrapped up last Sunday.
Where oh where will they get their fix?
I can't really include myself in the True Blood fan club (I've only watched a few episodes here and there), but my friend Latoya is. She's actually more of a True Blood sophist. She writes about it with equal parts acumen and abandon at her blog Racialicious.
But, as I explained to her recently, True Blood-ites might continue to get their fix of backstabbing and bloodletting (both figuratively and literally) by merely jumping genres… to opera.

True Blood's Joe Manganiello Hungry Like a Wolf for His Girlfriend

True Blood's hunky werewolf Joe Manganiello sometimes brings his work home with him. And that's just fine by his girlfriend, actress and model Audra Marie.

"I sniff you a lot. And I growl a lot when you ask me to do things, like clean up," Manganiello joked to Marie while talking with PEOPLE at Wednesday's New York premiere of HBO's Boardwalk Empire.

Asked if it's a turn-on that her boyfriend plays a werewolf, Marie replied, "Of course!" She added that Manganiello is perfectly cast, "if you saw how he eats at home. He likes to eat meat without a utensil."

The Man Behind the Music of HBO's "True Blood," Gary Calamar, Part 1

"True Blood's" music supervisor, Gary Calamar, reveals how the show's music soundtrack comes together.

HBO's "True Blood" is great TV for many reasons, not least of which is it's music, and the dangerous, swampy vibe it often amplifies. Much of the music compliments the show's main location, and music supervisor Gary Calamar even employs local musicians from Louisiana like Allen Toussaint and C.C. Adcock to lend the show an authentic regional sound. When not working on the soundtrack for "True Blood," Calamar, who also was behind the music of "Six Feet Under," music supes for other shows like "Men of a Certain Age," and "House M.D." He's also a working DJ who has had a nighttime show on KCRW for something like 13 years, spinning pop, roots rock, blues, and soul. As you can imagine, he gets a lot of soundtrack ideas for his day job, during his night job. He's a busy man, but he found the time to get down with me recently about the impossibility of using Led Zeppelin in TV, the cultural importance of the record store, and of course, the music of "True Blood."

What is the sound of Bon Temps?

It's got a few different sounds. I mean, it's got the sound of Merlotte's, which is a little bit more, upbeat bar music, rockabilly, southern Rock. And then in the first season we had some music for Sookie playing at her house, which was like the Watson Twins covering The Cure and stuff like that. But, yeah, all of it has sort of a dark undercurrent to it like a lot of New Orleans blues seems to have. Those classics Slim Harpo, Willie Dixon, and Howlin' Wolf. Those are what really kind of speak to me as the sound of Bon Temps.

I heard [series creator] Alan Ball say a rule of his was to "Never use opera music" in a vampire show, one of the things he decided early on along with not giving them cheesy contact lenses...

I don't remember Alan actually saying that to me. But I think his goal was to have a non-traditional kind of sound to the show. And not use, you know, sort of overly dramatic types of music that have been used in vampire series in the past, or movies in the past.
