I liked several things about “Soul of Fire,” but since I want us to leave in a good mood, I’m going to save them until the end. First, I’ve gotta deliver some tough love…
I hart True Blood, but this entire season has been based on a bogus conflict.
For eleven episodes, we’ve been watching the Witch-Vampire war, and we’ve been told the war is important because it could result in vampire extinction. Martonia has been determined to obliterate the fangers, and the vampires have been afraid she could actually do it. Scenes like Jessica’s slow crawl to the sun have suggested the vampires are this close to getting wiped out, and we’re obviously supposed to be worried about it. By extension, we’re also supposed to worry for Sookie. In this episode, when Martonia surrounds her in a burning ring of fire, we’re supposed to think that she could die for trying to help the vamps.
But we know it’s just a tease. True Blood is a vampire show, and on a vampire show, the vampires are never going to lose. Meanwhile, Sookie is the lead character, so even though she’s not a vampire, she’s not going to die, either. Therefore, all this witch vs. vampire stuff is just a waste of our time. Instead of getting wrapped up in it and wondering how it will end, I get bored and frustrated, waiting for Marnie’s inevitable defeat.

'True Blood' Recap: Showdown at the Moon Goddess Emporium
Sookie and Jesus embrace their magical legacies to defeat Marnie's evil grip on Bon Temps – with unforeseen results
The residents of Bon Temps are pissed off in "Soul of Fire," Season Four's penultimate episode. Be they vampire, witch, werewolf, shape-shifter, human or telepathic part-faerie, they're mad as hell and they're not going to take it anymore. This episode saw what appeared to be the final vampire-witch battle, with the vamps triumphing over the violently disturbed Wiccan Marnie – with help from Jesus' brujo magic and Sookie's trusty light power. Although the Sookie-Bill-Eric love triangle remained at a standstill this episode, Pam is forced to accept the fact that her maker's allegiance is no longer to her, causing a high potential for Eric's progeny to become dangerously unhinged. Still, love wasn't entirely absent from the plot, with Jessica and Jason trying to ignore the passion between them and failing miserably. As the episode drew to a close though, it seemed wartime had finally given way to peace. But as the final 60 seconds proved, "dead" doesn't necessarily mean "gone."

True Blood serves up a steaming pile of True Death by Meredith Woerner io9.com
Last night on True Blood, everyone got a little action! Even Andy! The Vampire Squad wrestled the witches with their custom leather fingerless gloves and fired a rocket launcher up their cackling behinds.
But let me tell it to you, Pro/Con style:
Pro: Aaaaand we pick up exactly right where we left off last week. Except this time the vampires are no longer in slow motion. But don't worry, True Blood always finds a way to screw in some extra ridiculous. Cue Jessica and Pam's hilarious banter, "This is what PMS used to feel like" and "Can we blow up these Wiccan dipshits already? I have a mani/pedi at four." Glad to see we're all taking this Wiccan fight seriously. Lady vampires go to war! PMS! Manicures! Hoorah!

Recaps: True Blood, Season 4, Episode 11
Recap in 140: With Jesus and Lafayette’s help, Bill and Eric win what they think will be the final battle with Marnie. But it won’t be.
The Episode: There is still one episode left in the season, so there is still time to prove this hypothesis wrong, but I think I’ve figured out the over-arching problem with True Blood: the core cast of the show is impossible to kill. Disclaimer: I don’t read the books, so something shocking could be on the way in the near future, but I don’t see it. Every time characters on the show come to the precipice of death, they are predictably pulled back from the edge.
• Sookie
• Eric
• Bill
• Jessica
• Pam
• Jason
• Sam
• Alcide
And I suppose you could throw Lafayette, Jesus and Holly into the mix if you factor in last week’s cliffhanger. But at every turn, their lives were spared. And I didn’t even feel as though they were ever in real danger. It’s sort of like a Tom Cruise movie. Tom Cruise never dies at the end of a Tom Cruise vehicle. If you tell yourself that during any juncture in the film, it sort of kills the suspense.

Teen angst meets vampires in Venice - new film from Favorite books
Harron's 'Moth Diaries' preems at fest
Mary Harron’s adaptation of bestseller 'The Moth Diaries' looks at teen girl friendships and fantasies at a boarding school in the 1960s.Gotham filmmaker Mary Harron journeys to the Lido this week with her fourth feature, an adaptation of Rachel Klein's 2002 bestseller "The Moth Diaries," which preems out of competition today in Venice, just days before its Toronto Film Festival bow.Told via journal entries, the novel is a slice of modern Gothic set at a girls' boarding school in the 1960s.
Its 16-year-old narrator Rebecca (Sarah Bolger), devastated her father's suicide, finds herself preoccupied by a new girl, the mysterious Ernessa (Brit supermodel Lily Cole), whom she suspects of being a vampire.
For the director, however, the genre elements were not the chief attraction.

True Blood: Best. Episode. Ever. Song Ain't Bad, Either. by Jefwithonef from Houston Press
For some reason, Gothtopia has spent the last decade completely convinced that Dinosaur Jr. was from Texas. We have argued rather vehemently with many prominent local music personalities about this subject, and of course we've never bothered to look up the information like a good American. No, Dinosaur Jr. is from Amherst, Mass., and we apparently owe many, many people an apology.
Why do we bring this up? Well, J. Mascis from Dinosaur Jr. started a band called Witch in 2005, and it's a song from their 2006 self-titled album that gave this week's episode of True Blood its name. That song is "Soul of Fire."
Now, we had a mixed reaction when we found out that the song was a Witch song. On the awesome side of the scale, Danzig has a song called "Soul of Fire," which would have stomped the colons of the three parishes. On the other side of the scale, HIM has a song called "Soul of Fire," and if had turned out to be that song we would have quit this column and gone to the beach.

Andy Gets Some Fairy Tail! Swear to the light !
The fairies are back. Well, one at least. And we're not exactly sure why. 'Cause after she creepily open-eyed kisses Andy Bellefleur (and then proceeds to lick his face and screw him), she apparently disappeared back into her orb of light. We're seriously doubting Tinker-skank only popped in for a supernatural booty call, so get ready for some fairy action in next week's finale.

'True Blood' recap: Soul survivors
You just knew Marnie wasn't going to be dispatched quite that easily. In "Soul or Fire," Sunday's penultimate episode of "True Blood's" fourth season, Bill might have managed to take down the witch's body, but she's still hanging around in spirit.
Not that it was so easy for the vampires to get access to Marnie/Antonia and the coven at all. Though Bill, Jessica, Eric and Pam approach the MoonGoddess Emporium with serious weaponry in hand, intending to blow up the whole place and anyone inside, Jason appears and tells them that Sookie is being held captive (along with the others). Instantly, Bill and Eric decide to switch gears, though Pam makes it plain that she's still on board with the original plan, whether Sookie dies or not. Meanwhile, Marnie/Antonia tells the coven that the vampires are coming, Casey panics and tries to leave, only to wind up with a dagger in her chest. Her death outrages Antonia, who leaves Marnie's body, shocked that the witch would kill an innocent member of their own group. However, Marnie binds Antonia to her and, like the other members of the coven, the spirit of the necromancer is powerless to leave.
