True Blood on FX: it’s brilliant; it’s filthy and Bill Compton’s (Stephen Moyer) is a smokin’ piece of undead ass

I must admit I'm getting a big kick from the first reviews of TB as it premiers on UK television. It's like revisiting the newness all over again. From Times Online UK

If you are one of those people who are troubled by a long, hot summer at the best of times — coming down with “sexy hay- fever” on a potent combination of thigh, wine, cigarettes at dusk and the distant sound of cats on roofs — then I must thoroughly dis-recommend True Blood, Alan American Beauty/Six Feet Under Ball’s new series. Not that it’s easy to be disrupted by it, anyway. It’s premiering on the FX channel, which, for many, is the equivalent of putting it roughly 12 miles offshore, in a dinghy, surrounded by police incident tape. You’re not likely to trip over it in your day-to-day TV business.

But as it’s due to transfer to Channel 4 in October we may as well be TV pioneers and deal with it now. Everyone will be talking about it this summer, anyway. And then going for a long, cold shower, before spending an hour looking through a catalogue of concrete renders and finishes in order to calm down a bit.

There are just two key facts, really: it’s brilliant; and it’s filthy. Set in the fictional north Louisiana town of Bon Temps — all bayou, margaritas, Spanish moss and hot pants — True Blood exists in a fractionally different world from ours, where the development of synthetic blood, and the Vampire Rights Amendment, mean that vampires live openly in Scandinavia, and the US. Angelina Jolie has adopted a vampire baby.

Nonetheless, when Bill Compton’s (Stephen Moyer) smokin’ piece of undead ass walks into Merlotte’s Bar, it’s the first vampire the backwater town has ever seen. “That is trouble, looking for a place to happen,” says Tara, one of the barmaids and, coincidentally, the “Categorically Most Enjoyably Arsey Woman” ever to have been portrayed on screen.

I Think Stephen Moyer is the Hottest man ever on TV. And don't get me wrong, he makes a smokin' vamp. But I am so sick of the way he reacts to Eric when he pulls rank, I know he's the "sheriff". But take a lesson from Clint Eastwood and have a little hidden dignity when he's beating you down.

Hey Julie

I think Bill is a good and loyal soldier.
He is an officer but he firmly believes in rank and protocol-even if he does poke at Eric a bit and eric takes it form him and never would from others because he also respects Bill a great deal.

Unless a king of queen ( or in TB the magister) is present Eric is always the boss and I think Bill respects him and thinks he's a good boss( in the books)

He does sometimes have mixed allegiances because he ( like Sookie ) has also worked directly for the Queen by-passing Eric as the sheriff.

I have always loved their vampship –it’s different on TV but the interaction between the level of vamps as well as between sire and child is really important part of the stories. We ’ve seen it with Pam and Eric and now with Bill and Jessica.

We will soon see the dark side of it with Lorena and Bill …yummy yummy

Dallas you are right, AS with True Blood, in the BOOKS we only see glimpses of the vampire hierarchy, I do hope that CH gives us more on that in the last 3/4 books she has signed on to do. I think Bill and Eric do quite well and I do think both of them respect one another, and I do like how Bill ordered the bottle of blood substitute just to spite Eric, but that Eric didn't come down hard on him for it. He could have. Anyway I think it will all come out in the wash as us old southern ladies say.

That is soo something that the book Bill would have done ....
Sometimes the writers get him and sometimes they don't and the TB Bill is so wonderful compared to Bk 1 and 2.

The characters in TB are different but they mostly hold them true to their basic 'personalities'

There are numerous times Bill goes off a little on Eric in the books and its always well handled by Eric ( who is always and excellent leader and business man - Eric ( character) should win some award from a business group for embodying some of the best boss features ever.

He is loyal to his staff, listens to them- highly respects them .
Takes control and makes decisions and then stands by them

He's decisive, in control , delegates and assigns when needed. He seems to compensate well - he is totally loyal and expects it in return.

He is ruthless and territorial but everyone knows that right up front.

My favorite little Eric Bill exchange -

"Bill, she is here. Some shapeshifters brought her in." He looked me over. "Battered, but walking." .......I'll take her up and start doctoring."
Eric's back stiffened. "Bill," he said and there was a world of threat in his voice. "All right then.
Good-bye." He turned back to me as if there'd been no interruption.
