Happy St. Patricks' Day from the French Quarter

We had a great evening, nice dinner, and then we watched the French Quarter St. Patrick's Day parade...

On our way home tomorrow after one more stop at Cafe Du Monde....

Would you like to see Sookie ( Anna Paquin) ??You can if you live in Ft Scott , Kansas !

Downtown Fort Scott will be the site of a Hollywood-style movie premiere next month.

The world premiere of the Hallmark Hall of Fame film, "The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler," which tells the story of the Polish-born heroine and social worker who rescued 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II, will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, at the Liberty Theatre, 113 S. Main St.

Tickets for the event, which are free of charge, have been highly sought-after by the public since the announcement late last week that the event would be conducted in Fort Scott, according to Norm Conard, the director of the Lowell Milken Center and one of the founders of the student-driven "Life in a Jar" project that focuses on Sendler's life and heroic efforts.

"We had 150 reservations by Saturday morning," Conard said. "There's a lot of interest in it."

While Sendler's story has drawn the interest of news and media outlets across the nation and the globe over the last decade, the Hallmark-produced film will mark the first time that her story has been used as the basis for a feature film. A few documentaries about Sendler and the "Life in a Jar" project have been produced in Europe, Conard said.

The Hallmark Hall of Fame movie, which was filmed in Latvia in northern Europe, will air on television on the CBS Network on April 19.

The film stars Anna Paquin as Sendler; Marcia Gay Harden as Sendler's mother, Janina; Nathaniel Parker as Dr. Majkowski, the head of Warsaw's Department of Health who helped Sendler obtain important resources for her mission; and Goran Visnijic as Stefan, a former university friend of Sendler who was Jewish and with whom Sendler fell in love with when she began her clandestine work in the Warsaw Ghetto.

The Emmys Are Coming, The Emmys Are Coming

'Co at themovies' is talking Emmy's and they think it will be Miss Anna ! What do you think ?
Lead Actress Drama:

This category will be ruled by the winners of the past two years: Glenn Close (Damages) and Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters). There's no way they're not gonna make it. Kyra Segdwick (The Closer) is a perennial nominee just waiting for the win, she always gets in. Mariska Hargitay used to be such a nominee until she finally won in 2006, she's probably still a lock at this point and with these new rules.

Holly Hunter (Saving Grace) plays a role that is very popular amongst voters (Sedgwick and Hargitay have similar roles) so she would be an expected nominee, she was already in this list last year. Hot show Mad Men has two gals to choose from: Elizabeth Moss (Sag nominated) and January Jones (Globe nominated). Unless one of them gets down to the supporting category, there'll be a massacre for that nomination. I love Jones and would preffer her nominated, but she failed to make the supporting actress list last year. Anna Paquin (True Blood) just won the Globe and could get in (she's HBO's girl). She also has prestige being an Oscar winner for "The Piano".

Prediction:
1) Glenn Close (Damages)
2) Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters)
3) Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer)
4) Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit)
5) Holly Hunter (Saving Grace)
6) January Jones (Mad Men)
7) Anna Paquin (True Blood)

Paquin gets to the point

Come in here and show them your teeth," actress Anna Paquin yells into another room.

Actor Stephen Moyer walks in, a bit perplexed about why she wants him to open his mouth to a room of strangers.

Then she giggles and asks him again to bare his fangs.

And he does.

"See," she says, smiling.

"He does have them."

As the star of the TV vampire drama True Blood, Paquin thinks her co-star's pointy real-life canine teeth are cool.

They are long and sharp like a vampire's would be.

Strangers might find them a bit disconcerting, especially since Moyer plays a vampire on True Blood.

It's part of Paquin's charm to flirt.

Bloodsucking followup...

Alex at Collective(ly) Unconscious writes

Today I would like to re-visit something that I wrote about last year but have a whole new perspective on now. When I was blogging about the cultural trends and art forms from 2008, I wrote about our renewed obsession with the Vampire. Back then, I was trying to get to the bottom of our fascination with the fanged creatures of the night, but I had not yet seen two of the things I was writing about. Now I have seen 3/4 of True Blood and have watched Let the Right One In.

Back then, I cold only write about cultural perspectives and other boring things. But now that I have seen all three major pieces of Vampiric entertainment from 2008, I can write about what I really wanted to in the first place: the best vampires from 2008. Which Vamps were the most bad-ass in 2008? Here are the three Vampires in descending order of awesomeness.

3. Edward Cullen (Twilight)
Walks in the sunlight....immediate disqualification.

2. Bill Compton (True Blood)
Stephen Moyer's portrayal of this Southern vampire is interesting for a few reasons. But here is my favorite: there is nothing flashy about it. One would assume that when you are playing an undead monster, you would get to chew some scenery and act "big." But Moyer's Bill Compton is wonderfully reserved and calm. During an early episode, his character alludes to the fact that he never has to breathe. So naturally, I acted like a dick and tried to catch him breathing in every episode I watched after that. But Moyers passes the test. In every take I have seen, his chest never moves. Just because this isn't a "flashy" role doesn't mean it is a difficult one. This 30-something Englishman is playing a nearly 200-year old creature who ever breathes and has a Southern accent. And for the most part, Moyers has me believe that what I am seeing on screen is in fact, a 200-year old creature who never breathes and has a Southern accent.

Words from Dancing Fool writes about Sookie novels

from Words from Dancing Fool

I have become addicted to the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris lately. I started reading them last weekend, and so far I'm up to book 7. I am ripping through them with great gusto, and I can't wait until my Kindle gets here so I can download the last two. The series is nothing like I thought it would be.

It's really quite beyond genre classification. There are elements of horror, mystery, "chick lit" (whatever that is), and a healthy dollop of good old fashioned romance novel thrown in for makeweight. The heroine is admirable, strong-willed, and thoroughly Southern. The guys (and I guess I have to use that term rather loosely, all things considered) who pursue and woo her are interesting and exotic. My personal favorite is Eric. Despite his shortcomings, he's just...well...let's say he's the type one wouldn't kick out of bed for eating crackers (not that he would, again, all things considered)

Fang Fighter True Blood Video Game from HBO Asia

HBO Asia in the Philippines even has a fun True Blood Video game called Fang Fighter

http://www.cinemaxasia.com/trueblood/

Check it out and check out Bill and Eric Below !

Get ready for True Blood in the Philippines

By Deni Rose M. Afinidad
Contributor Manila Standard

They say it’s the adult Twilight, but to some, it’s no more than the wannabe Twilight. One thing is certain though, True Blood is such a hit in the United States, it would be a pity not to bring it to the Philippines.

So, guys, it’s now here!

True Blood Season 1 will be premiering on HBO Asia’s new channel, Max, on April 9 at 9 p.m. This original HBO production brought lead star Anna Paquin to her recent Golden Globe win for Best Actress in a Television Series-Drama. The series was created by Six Feet Under’s Alan Ball, based on the New York Times bestseller Sookie Stackhouse novels of Charlaine Harris about the tale of a perky waitress with telepathic gifts and an irresistible attraction to a vampire named Bill Compton.

“This is a dream role for me,” says Paquin who plays Sookie Stockhouse.

“She’s fragile but very intuitive; she’s had a really hard life, but she’s still innocent. She believes in love, and believes that it’s actually possible, even in circumstances that seem completely impossible. She’s brave, she doesn’t mind being the odd one out… Life’s kicked her pretty hard, but she hasn’t become bitter and she hasn’t become a totally damaged person. I think it’s an amazing quality to be able to roll with the punches and not be totally ruined as a person because life’s been rough for you. That’s a really admirable way to go through your life,” Anna says of her character.

Apart from Paquin whose first claim to fame is her portrayal of Rogue in the X-Men films, the saga stars The Starter Wife’s Stephen Moyer as Bill Compton; Summerland’s Ryan Kwanten as Sookie’s womanizing brother Jason; Rutina Wesley as the outspoken Tara Thornton; Judging Amy’s Sam Trammell as Sookie’s good-hearted boss Sam Merlotte, Nelsan Ellis (The Inside) as the iconic cook Lafayette Reynolds; and Alexander Skarsgård (HBO’s Generation Kill) as Eric, a Nordic vampire.

“I loved the way it was funny and scary and sexy and romantic, and it had a lot of interesting things to say about what it’s like to be other than mainstream. And it’s not just the vampires: Sookie is a telepath, and there are other non-human characters in the story,” says Ball on what made him want to turn Harris’ book into a sequence.

According to him, the first season is the first book in the series, with some new stories created for the characters of Jason, Tara and Sam to provide balance.

“One of the things I love about Charlaine’s books is the way she treats the supernatural world so matter-of-factly. We’re trying to do the same thing in our production design and the way we shoot everything. We want to keep the supernatural rooted in nature, so that it’s just more nature than we’re used to in everyday life,” says Ball, adding that he has been trying to avoid all the vampire clichés.

“I watched just about every vampire movie, and most of them told me what I don’t want to do. I wanted to avoid the crazy contact lenses, the opera music, the blue light… I want it to be rooted in the characters, and seem like it could be really happening, and not some fantasy world,” he explains.

In addition to Ball, the series gathers the directors of some of today’s big hits: John Dahl (Rounders), Nick Gomez (The Shield), Anthony Hemingway (HBO’s The Wire), Michael Lehmann (HBO’s Big Love), Daniel Minahan (Grey’s Anatomy), Nancy Oliver (writer, Lars and the Real Girl), Marcos Siega (Veronica Mars), and Scott Winant (Hidden Palms).

Unapologetic and irreverent, True Blood is a radical option for those who feel Twilight is teeny-bopper. This Max series has all the ingredients of a hit-maker: sex, action, mystery, violence, suspense, and rock and roll.

Even before the series’ local premiere, it has already created a following among Filipinos. Some have even recorded the series’ opening song and made it their ringtone!

Indeed, it was so popular that in conjunction with its Asian premiere, HBO Asia has also launched an online game, Fang Fighter, available at www.cinemaxasia.com/trueblood. Players of the game will take on the character of a vampire who has to defeat various opponents standing in his way.

Max, which will hold True Blood’s Asian premiere, is a re-branding what was originally Cinemax. It targets a generally male market through genre-driven action, sci-fi and suspense programs presented with a bold, direct, and unapologetic attitude.

“True Blood has a much lighter tone. It’s more of an adventure. It’s a story you’ve never seen before and a world you’ve never seen before. It’s fun. It’s a show I would watch,” says Ball on why people ought to sink their teeth into True Blood, no pun intended.
