Hollywood's Dracula War

Until 1992, this budding horror fiend's diet of Dracula films was abundant with Universal's output in the '30s and '40s and Hammer's vibrant, sexual revival in the '60s and '70s (I was never a fan of the John Badham version in '79 with Frank Langella). Then Francis Ford Coppola came along with Bram Stoker's Dracula, amplifying the sex and violence and introducing audiences to the back story of Vlad the Impaler (aka Vlad Dracul or Vlad Tepes), the man who inspired the Dracula legend.

In this bloody, creature-filled, hyper-stylized fever dream of an adaptation, Vlad is a knight in the Order of the Dragon who fights against the Turks and returns home to find that his woman has killed herself over some misinformation. He freaks out and renounces God. Stabs a cross (which bleeds). Says he'll avenge her death by defying his own, furthermore, when he returns from the grave he'll have "all the powers of darkness." Hence the whole drinking blood, crawling walls, sleeping in a coffin, shape shifting thing that follows… But prior to Coppola's version, written by James V. Hart, the Vlad/Dracula-as-we've-always-known-him connection was never fully realized except for in a 1975 documentary called In Search of Dracula in which Christopher Lee played Vlad. Yes, Lee, Hammer’s regal and deadly Dracula.

Charlaine Harris interview on SKY TV UK

True Blood makes great TV, but it wouldn't exist without Southern belle Charlaine Harris, author of the books behind the show.

We caught up with The Southern Vampire Mysteries writer to find out what she really thinks of the show, and get the gossip on her latest novel Dead In The Family.

Charlaine was keen to tell us how proud she is of what show boss Alan Ball has done with her creation, and even admitted to being jealous of a couple of his ideas.

We also got the author's opinion on what makes vampires so damn popular these days, as well as asking for her thoughts on rival vampire saga, Stephenie Meyer's Twilight.

If you want the full True Blood experience (and don't mind a few spoilers along the way), enter our competition for a chance to win one of five signed sets of Charlaine's books.

Charlaine Harris is unimpressed by True Blood Season 2 Voodoo sub-plot

Charlaine Harris has admitted that she is not keen on some of True Blood's sub-plots.

Harris, the author of the Sookie Stackhouse novels, praised show creator Alan Ball for staying "true to the spirit of the books", but said that she was less impressed with some of the minor stories.

"There have been some sub-stories that I wasn't as nuts about as others, but there hasn't been anything I've really hated," she told Digital Spy.

"I wasn't too keen on the voodoo story, but I see now why they introduced it in the second season. Once I saw it, it all made sense."

She added: "The plot has been altered quite a bit and there's more material that I didn't write because they're having to bring in the secondary characters and buff them up.

"There are some great differences, but as Alan promised me, he is staying true to the spirit of the books - and that's what I wanted."

So, Your Girlfriend Loves Bill Compton (part two)

Without further ado, let us finish up yesterday’s post:

5. “But isn’t this guy in love with…his lunch?”

Oh, you guys and your literal, pragmatic brains. Don’t overthink it. The idea of a vampire saying, “technically, you are my lunch, but you’re special so I love you” is suspiciously similar to the way women always want to “change” the bad boys. We grow up and realize that a manwhore is just a manwhore, but the seed of the bad boy fantasy lives on in what we read. “Oh, but he’s going to CHANGE for ME!” It’s stupid, but it’s still alive way, way back in the middle school parts of our brains. (We are ashamed of this.) Besides, the idea of a guy singling us out and saying, “you are not lunch, you are special” is also a variation on what we really want to hear. We don’t want to believe that men think of us as useful, yet tiring foils (as we are almost always portrayed in Super Bowl commercials). We want to believe that you’re with us because we’re special, not because we’re tolerable.

Haim-ing it up: Brattle to screen ‘Lost Boys’ tomorrow

“Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die… It’s fun to be a vampire.” — Ain’t that the truth. Three cheers to the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, as tomorrow night it pays tribute to fallen teen idol Corey Haim with a screening of 1986 vampire flick “The Lost Boys.” Let’s show those “Twilight” kids how we did it back in the day…

Special Screening!
In Tribute to Corey Haim!
The Lost Boys
10:00 PM $9.75
Discount student tickets available at the door w/valid school ID. Brattle Member passes can be used for this screening.

(1986) dir Joel Schumacker, w/Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, Jason Patric, Jami Gertz, Kiefer Sutherland [97 min]

We were saddened this week by the tragic death of one of our childhood cinematic companions, Corey Haim. Haim established himself as a pop culture icon in the late ’80s with roles in “Lucas,” “Silver Bullet,” “License To Drive,” and, of course, the vampire classic “THE LOST BOYS.”

As a tribute to Haim, we’re interrupting our regular programming to present a 35mm screening of his most iconic screen role – as Sam Emerson, a kid who moves into a small California town with his family and winds up confronting a group of vampires that plague the area.

Just to up the ’80s ante, THE LOST BOYS also features Kiefer Sutherland in his creep-tastic, pre-24 years and Corey Feldman as Sam’s wisecracking, vampire-hunting compadre.

Stephen Moyer uses “special” visualisation techniques to stop him getting too excited when he films love scenes

Well we've gone from "sock of destiny " to this

Stephen Moyer uses “special” visualisation techniques to stop him getting too excited when he films love scenes with his fiancée Anna

Paquin. The actor plays vampire Bill Compton in sexy US drama True Blood. Bill is romantically involved with Sookie Stackhouse, portrayed by Stephen’s real-life partner Anna. He admits getting steamy on set can be difficult, explaining he just imagines former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher when he’s getting too hot under the collar

“We met on the show, nearly three years ago, and so everything that has happened to us as a couple has happened in front of the crew. We know them, it’s the same crew we’ve had all along. It’s one of those things where – we love the crew and there are times when you are doing a scene and it’s so technical you’re trying to work out camera angles, shadows, so you’re not thinking about things like that,” he explained. “But there are times when... the moment takes you. I have special things I think about to stop anything – mine is usually Margaret Thatcher naked playing table tennis. That works, trust me.”Stephen won the role of Bill when he had all but given up trying to break into the US market. His agent convinced him to read the script, and he was immediately hooked. The 40-year-old expects the series of run for years to come, and is thrilled to be a part of it. “Yeah, I did know it was going to be big. Absolutely from the word go,” he said on British programme This Morning. “There was no question, when I read it I just knew it had everything. Not just about vampires, about a lot of subversive stuff – there’s an undercurrent.”

So, Your Girlfriend Loves Bill Compton (part one)

The more I read books from the Sookie Stackhouse series, the more I wonder why guys generally don’t read these books. The books have a female narrator and are largely considered “silly chick books” only one tier above Danielle Steele. If I may, I’d like to tell all you guys why you should be reading these, highlighting, and making notes in the margins.

Modern vampire lit is mainly written by women, for women.

Who cares if the guy at Borders thinks you might secretly be gay? If you’re good at reading between lines, you’re going to learn a lot about the female psyche if you read these things. You want to know what we’re thinking? What we talk about with our girlfriends, but not you? Read the books we’re reading and start asking questions. Odds are, you’re going to gain knowledge much more valuable than the 7 bucks you spent on the book.

Bookette UK does a nice rundown on Charlaine Harris event

Charlaine Harris Event Summary and Spider Winner!

I am pretty tired today. Yesterday I left the house at 7.00 a.m. I worked until 5.00 pm and then hubby collected me and we drove to the nearby tube, hopped on and then a while later disembarked at Leicester Square. We had a quick slice of pizza and then we went into the Prince Charles Cinema for the very exciting Evening with Charlaine Harris.

Casting Call for Claudine in True Blood Season 3 Episode 3.07

A new casting call is out for S03 E07 – “Hit the Floor”.

[CLAUDINE] 30s-40s. A beautiful, kind and loving figure who knows a lot about Sookie, she appears to Sookie in a golden vision. However, their utopia is abruptly dismantled when Claudine issues Sookie a mysterious warning. Possible recurring.

FYI : We should not see Claudine for the first time according to the books until the next book - we first meet Claudine in Bk 4 Dead to the World when she comes into Merlotte's with Tara. She is working part time with Tara at "Togs" Sometimes folks think we first see her waking Sookie up in the car but this is the first exchange:

"I'm Claudine," she said, with a beautiful smile. Her teeth were Hollywood white. Her skin had an odd
quality; it looked glossy and thin, reminding me of the skin of a plum; like if you bit her, sweet juice would gush out. "I'm here because of all the activity."
"Oh?" I said, taken aback.
"Sure. You have vampires, and Weres, and lots of other stuff all tangled up here in Bon Temps—to say nothing of several important and powerful crossroads. I was drawn to all the possibilities."
"Uh-huh," I said uncertainly. "So, do you plan on just observing all this, or what?"
"Oh, no. Just observing is not my way." She laughed. "You're quite the wild card, aren't you?"

We have seen the next book seeping into the season before in True Blood so this isn't too unusual.

This image is from the unaired True Blood Episode 1 - it used to be online but it's gone now.
