This morning’s mail brought an advance copy of “Dead in the Family” by Charlaine Harris (Ace Books, $25.95), the 10th novel in her “Southern Vampire” series starring Sookie Stackhouse.
Long before “Twilight,” Harris found a niche, and a new curve, in vampire fiction, basing her stories in Bon Temps, La., a small Southern town in an alternate universe, where the Japanese have invented artificial blood and the vampires have come out in the open — or come out of the coffin, so to speak.
