Season 3 Of HBO’s “True Blood” Will Feature The Score Of Composer, Nathan Barr

Jun 03, 2010 – Los Angeles, CA – HBO’s highly-acclaimed and ratings record-breaking drama series, TRUE BLOOD will premiere its third season on June 13th, featuring the score of composer Nathan Barr.

The award-winning composer arranges all the music, and performs the majority of the instrumental parts from his own private home studio in Topanga Canyon. “I've dusted off my dulcimer and a couple of other strange and obscure instruments that I never thought I'd have the chance to use and incorporated them into the score, giving the show some fresh musical notes while maintaining that True Blood sound,” he said.

For the upcoming season, Barr collaborated with singer-songwriter, Elvis Costello on an original Lucinda Williams track, in which he played the cello. Barr has composed the score for all three seasons of the show. Executive Producer and show creator, Alan Ball, says that Barr’s work “continually impresses and surprises me, and one of the favorite parts of my job is driving out to his studio to hear his score cues, as I know I’m always in for a treat.”

During the show’s hiatus, Nate scored THE LAST EXORCISM his third collaboration with producer, Eli Roth. Barr also scored the successful documentary, HOOD TO COAST that recently debuted to sold out audiences at the South by Southwest Festival.

Nate will be performing select tracks from the TRUE BLOOD score for an exclusive hour long concert at the Ubeda Music Festival in Spain this coming July. While the official time and date is to be announced, the concert will most likely take place on July 15, at 9:30pm at Palacio de los Dávalos (House of Towers).

Ranked as one of the top 100 grossing film composers, Nathan not only composes his own original scores, he also performs all of the instruments heard in the majority of his compositions. Skilled in writing many styles and genres ranging from orchestral to rock, Barr is known for his collection and inclusion of rare and unusual instruments from around the world, which include human bone trumpets from Tibet, dismantled pianos, a rare glass harmonica, and gourd cellos, among many others. Barr has scored more than 24 feature films to date, including Warner Bros.’ hit comedies THE DUKES OF HAZZARD and BEERFEST. TRUE BLOOD marks his debut as a composer for a full series. Nate comments, "The story-telling and the characters in True Blood are all beautifully complex which makes my job as a composer very exciting because I have such a rich world to play with thematically. Who would have thought that could be possible after last season's amazing ride?”

The new season of TRUE BLOOD premiers on Sunday, June 13 on HBO. For more information on Nathan Barr visit www.nathanbarr.com.

Nathan's score to the TV Series True Blood will be released on 8th September

Nathan's score to the TV Series True Blood will be released by Varese Sarabande on 8th September

TRUE BLOOD
Original Score From The HBO®

Original Series
Music Composed and Performed by Nathan Barr

TRUE BLOOD chronicles the backwoods Louisiana town of Bon Temps … where vampires have emerged from the coffin, and no longer need humans for their fix. Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin, Golden Globe®-winner for True Blood, Academy Award®-winner for The Piano) works as a waitress at the rural bar Merlotte’s. Though outwardly a typical young woman, she keeps a dangerous secret: she has the ability to hear the thoughts of others. Her situation is further complicated when the bar gets its first vampire patron — 173-year-old Bill Compton (Steven Moyer, Quills) — and the two outsiders are immediately drawn to each other. Delivering the best of what audiences have come to expect from Creator and Executive Producer Alan Ball (writer of Oscar®-winning Best Picture American Beauty, creator of the Emmy® Award-winning HBO® series Six Feet Under), TRUE BLOOD is a dark and sexy tale that boldly delves into the heart — and the neck — of the Deep South.

The evocative score — slightly seasoned with regional influence — is composed and performed by Hostel veteran Nathan Barr.

Season 2 is currently running on HBO.

Sookie goes into Gran's bedroom for the first time

One of the most moving scene of the premier episode of season two had to be when Sookie goes into Gran's bedroom for the first time ...
(* in one of the interviews ball says some of the cast and crew brought thier own mementos from their mothers and grandmothers to be in Gran's house scenes as did Ball-these aren't all just stage props)

I've received a number of email questions and comments about a couple things in that scene.

1. What Charlaine book was Gran reading? ( that we see laid half open on the bed)
A. The book we see is book 8 of the Aurora Teagarden series , Poppy Done to Death by Charlaine Harris.

If you remember we saw Gran reading Last Scene Alive ( bk 7) in the Aurora Teagarden series in episode 1 in Season 1 as she waited for Sookie to come home. HERE

2. Is that the cryin' pie music we hear ?
A. Yes in the background you can hear "Take me home " by Nathan Barr and Lisbeth Scott.

True Blood's Nathan Barr Film, TV music composers urge copyright law change

LOS ANGELES, June 10 (Reuters) - Nathan Barr has scored horror films like "Hostel" and the HBO vampire series "True Blood," but what really keeps the composer up at night is fear he will not get paid for music distributed online.

"'True Blood' is my first big show for TV and it's definitely going to see a lot of play on the Internet. It's a big issue for me," Barr, 36, told Reuters in an interview. "I don't understand why composers don't get paid if someone downloads it."

The issue is the latest digital copyright debate pitting creators in the entertainment industry on one side and studios, broadcasters, cable operators and technology companies on the other. Barr underscores how a growing number of artists -- writers, actors and, yes, composers -- feel they are not fairly compensated for content distributed on the Internet.

True Blood composer, Nathan Barr soundtrack release in August

We first heard about this directly from NB a few weeks ago here

Nathan Barr's soundtrack to True Blood’s first season will be released by Varese Sarabande Records and will officially hit music stores nation-wide this August. The soundtrack will feature an instrumental mix of score tracks from the show as well as Nathan Barr’s song with Lisbeth Scott, “Take me Home”.

Barr recently also co-created a composer-centered monthly web-series called OPEN BARR which will begin airing on www.nathanbarr.com in June. The series features one-on-one interviews with various successful composers from the music world focusing on but not limited to the film and television world. During interviews, guest composers are asked to divulge how their careers developed, where they get their inspiration, and explain the complications and triumphs of specific jobs. The pilot episode of the series will feature composer, Tyler Bates (WATCHMEN, 300), and future episodes will include acclaimed composers such as Jim Dooley, John Debney, and many more.

Recently nominated for a BMI award for his work on TRUE BLOOD, Nathan will be attending the awards show on May 20th at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel to receive the award. This is the second nomination for Barr, as he received his first in 2006 for his rock-inspired score for THE DUKES OF HAZZARD. BMI is the leader in the industry’s most important awards and honors. Its roster of songwriters and composers is unparalleled, ranging from industry to legends to the best of today’s hitmakers.

Barr attended the Paley Event for TRUE BLOOD at the Cinerama Dome at Arclight in Hollywood on April 13th, where he was given a great nod from Alan Ball. Patrons of the event enjoyed music from the series composed by Barr himself. Other attendees included: Alan Ball (Executive Producer), Stephan Moyer (Bill), Anna Paquin (Sookie), Ryan Kwanten (Jason), Sam Trammell (Sam), Rutina Westley (Tara), Alexander Skarsgard (Eric), Carrie Preston (Arlene), and Nelsan Ellis (Layfayette).

Hi Dallas,

About Nathan Barr
Nathan Barr began studying music in Tokyo, Japan at the age of four. He grew up surrounded by eclectic music ranging from Kabuki Theater, to the sounds of his mother performing on the koto and piano, to his father playing the banjo, guitar, and shakuhachi. His interest in music was further influenced by extensive travels around the world, where he experienced music ranging from Bali's Kecak Orchestras to China's Beijing Opera. During the summer of 1993, he toured Italy and Switzerland with the Julliard Cello Ensemble. Upon graduating from college, he joined the industrial alternative rock group V.A.S.T. (Elektra Records) for a brief stint, playing guitar and electric cello. Looking to explore a career in film music, he moved to Los Angeles in 1996, where he met Academy Award-winning film composer Hans Zimmer, who invited him to join him as his assistant. After just eight months with Hans, Nathan landed his first feature and struck out on his own and has been working constantly ever since. He is currently writing the score for Hostel Part 2 and will be traveling to Prague and London to record and mix the score with an orchestra at the end of March.
