Natchez Mansion Featured In HBO's 'True Blood' Balloon Race Design Features Longwood

NATCHEZ, Miss. -- The Longwood mansion in Natchez has become somewhat of a star these days.
First, camera crews from the HBO series "True Blood" used the grounds of the antebellum house to film a segment of the vampire series last April.The Natchez Democrat reported that Longwood will be featured on the Great Mississippi River Balloon Race's newest T-shirt.The watercolor design of a hot air-balloon drifting past the house's signature onion dome will be featured on the shirt celebrating 25 years of balloon racing.The Great Mississippi River Balloon Race is Oct. 15-17.

'True Blood' vampires right at home in Miss. HBO show features scenes of Natchez's Longwood

Russell Edgington, a red-haired antiques dealer with a thick Southern accent, is a notable figure in Mississippi politics.
It's uncertain whether he's crossed political paths with Gov. Haley Barbour during his reign as the vampire king of Mississippi, but it would make sense.
If you've lived 2,800 years on Earth, chances are you'd probably have connections with most movers and shakers, particularly those in your home state.
Of course, Edgington isn't the only vampire in town. Now that Jackson is one of the fictional settings for HBO's popular series, True Blood, a host of vampires and werewolves are roaming the capital city.
Created by Oscar winner Alan Ball, the show is based on The Southern Vampire Mystery (book) Series written by Tunica native Charlaine Harris.
This season, lead character Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a waitress with telepathic powers, travels to Jackson to investigate the disappearance of her vampire boyfriend, Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer).

Russell Edgington's house in Mississippi is the fabulous Longwood plantation

"The only place I haven't checked is Russell Edgington's compound--his mansion, with its outbuildings. It would be amazing if Russell were rash enough to keep another vampire prisoner in his own home. But he's been king for a hundred years. It could be that he is that confident. Maybe I could sneak in over the wall, but I wouldn't come out again. The grounds are patrolled by Weres. It's very unlikely we'll get access to such a secure place, and he won't invite us in except in very unusual circumstances."......

Then we pulled up into a driveway and stopped at a gate. A bearded vampire came up and peered in the window, looking at all the occupants carefully. He was far more alert than the indifferent guard at Alcide's apartment building. I heard an electronic hum, and the gate opened. We went up a driveway (I could hear the gravel crunching) and then we swung around in front of a mansion. It was lit up like a birthday cake, and as Eric carefully extracted me from the limo, I could see we were under a porte cochere that was as fancy as all get-out. Even the carport had columns. I expected to see Vivian Leigh come down the steps.......
Behind the mansion, there was indeed a smallish swimming pool, covered for the winter by a huge blacktarp. It had weighted edges that extended far beyond the actual perimeter of the pool. The tiny poolhouse was completely dark. I moved silently down a pathway created with uneven flagstones, and after Ipassed through a gap in a dense hedge, I found myself in a paved area. With my enhanced vision, I wasable to see instantly that I had found the courtyard in front of the former stables. It was a large edificesided with white clapboards, and the second story (where Bubba had spotted apartments) hadgable-style windows. Sookie goes to Mississippi- HBO vampire series films at Longwood

NATCHEZ — The fictional town of Bon Temps, La., came to life in Natchez Monday.

An HBO series, “True Blood,” was filming four episodes at Longwood all day Monday and into the early morning hours today.

Natchez got lucky in snagging the crew, said local Ed Godfrey, who scouted and managed the location for the filming company as a volunteer.

“They decided the series could go for a while, so they started buying set products to sell when the series ended,” Godfrey said. “The man who used to be with the Louisiana film commission is a Natchez native, and he got them up here antiques shopping.”
