Unpopular Vampires and Me

Let's face it, the world has been taken over by vampires.

At least, that's what people are saying. Little do they realize, vampires have been an enormous part of our world for a very long time -- my entire life, for certain. Growing up, I watched them on TV...

More Season 3 spoilers from Ausiello

Question: Any new spoilers for season 3 of True Blood? —Heather
Ausiello: Carrie Preston hints that “something very unexpected is going to happen with her character Arlene… [She] might just be nervous enough about the supernatural characters around her that she will try to do something about it. I think she is going to try to figure out a way to protect herself. She gets very upset. She doesn’t think vampires should be around children.”

Question: What’s Jason going to be up to on True Blood this season (aside from taking his shirt off, of course)? —Nick
Ausiello: “He finally discovers the long lost art of love,” reveals his portrayer, Ryan Kwanten. “Well, at least his version of. It gets him into more trouble that he expected. He’s also dealing with the fact that he committed a small crime in that he killed [Eggs].” What’s been his biggest acting challenge so far this season? “I start the season in bed with two girls,” he says. “Not that I couldn’t do it, but a challenge? Sure.”

'True Blood' gets "unexpected" plot twist

From Digital Spy

True Blood star Carrie Preston has revealed that an "unexpected" twist lies ahead for her character.

The actress, who plays Arlene Fowler on the HBO vampire drama, said that the upcoming third season sees her alter ego go to extreme lengths to protect her family.

"Something very unexpected is going to happen with Arlene," she told Entertainment Weekly. "[She] might just be nervous enough about the supernatural characters around her that she will try to do something about it."

She added: "I think she is going to try to figure out a way to protect herself. She gets very upset. She doesn't think vampires should be around children."

True Blood returns for its third series later this year in the US. Season two begins Friday, February 26 on FX in the UK.

'The Romantics': Anna Paquin and Katie Holmes are old girlfriends, at war over old boyfriend

Here's the plot, in movie algebra terms:

(Anna Paquin + Josh Duhamel) / Katie Holmes X (Malin Ackerman, Elijah Wood, Adam Brody, Dianna Agron, Jeremy Strong, and Rebecca Lawrence)

Translation: Katie Holmes will steal your man, Anna Paquin. Watch out! And your other friends are hooking up with each other, too!

The Romantics premiered Wednesday, and I think has potential to be one of the festival's breakouts.

Exclusive Denis O'Hare Interview on Edge of Darkness and True Blood

...At the premiere I also had to ask O'Hare about a project he's currently working on: True Blood. Okay, so 'had to' is a stretch... I'm a True Blood fan and getting to talk to the actor who's playing the Vampire King of Mississippi was more fun that work. He's filmed two episodes already, including one with Vampire Bill (played by Stephen Moyer). "[...]I had this great scene recently with Vampire Bill and it was a scene between two people talking about the people that they love, and what you do with that love. Because my boyfriend in the thing is 700 years old...I'm 2300 years old and we've been together for 700 years. And I have this great line where I say, 'Spend eternity together - that's commitment.' But, you know, the script is deep. It's not just frivolous, and I love that about it." Read/watch the interview...

True Blood Spoilers from EOnline

Kelly in New Madrid, Mo.: I can't wait for more True Blood! What can we expect from season three this summer?

Oh, where to begin? Let's start with the gorgeous Ryan Kwanten, who has some major storylines this season. First, Ryan says, "Jason finally falls in what he thinks is love. It's a pretty rare, unknown concept for him." Awww...Plus, Ryan tells us of Jason's future, "The fact that my character is dealing with the fact that he really has killed someone now is pretty crazy, and there's a whole host of new characters. There's the addition of werewolves coming in. We're using real wolves. It's crazy. I've yet to work with them. I'll work with them later on in the season, but I'm looking forward to it."

Alicia in La Cañada Flintridge, Calif.: I need True Blood scoop!
True Blood
's Rutina Wesley tells us of Tara in season three, "She's going to have to grieve a lot to get over [Eggs]. And then it's going to be crazy madness." As for Tara's ex-lovah Sam, Nelsan Ellis teases, "Sam moves away from Sookie and Bon Temps, and he clings to the family that he's now starting to get to know. He finds his mother, father and brother." Come back home, Sam!

Azul in Orlando: Gimme some Eric Northman scoop! I miss my favorite Scandanavian True Blood vampire.
Did you see Nelsan's dish that he's going to be "Eric's henchman" this year? Nelsan also reassures us that we'll be getting a lot of Eric and Pam tag-team action this year as well: "Eric will definitely be in every episode, and Pam is definitely in the first four."

The end of the Vampire’s grip on Hollywood?

A new day dawns and so the vampire creeps, creeps, creeps its way slowly back into the shadowy depths of mythology. Or does it? Has Hollywood had its fill of blood-letting and bloodlust? Do we finally bid farewell to Edward Cullen, Angel, Eli and Bill Compton? Or does the vampire continue to dig its nails into the everlasting flesh of Hollywood, holding it in its eternal embrace.

With Daybreakers just released in the US (doesn’t arrive on NZ shores until March this year), it’s possible we’re about to see a huge decline in vampire related movies/books/tv shows and the like. Obviously True Blood has found its niche and with current trends aside, will probably continue for a few seasons yet, given its popularity. Other than the continuance of the Twilight movies this year (Eclipse releases in New Zealand in July), it seems the vampire may have had its time in the limelight. Perhaps Hollywood really has had its fill of vampires. Let’s take a quick recap over the last few years and look at just how popular the vampire has been in the entertainment medium:

  1. Twilight (books and movies) – based on the books by Stephanie Meyer. Made vampires look hip again and even trendy caus’ they mention google :P
  2. Let the Right One In (movie based on the novel) – back to more traditional roots, you can’t deny the understated creepiness and allure of Eli, the 12 year old vampire that befriends a lonely boy on a swing. Just awesome.
  3. True Blood – bringing the vampire wayyy down south made this TV show with its raunchy and sexy appeal something to really sink your teeth into. Also based on books and starring New Zealand starlet Anna Paquin in the lead role

Don’t Panic, True Blood Fans: Jason Stackhouse’s Abs Will Run Free in Season Three Read more: Don’t Panic, True Blood Fans: Jason Stackhouse’s Abs Wi

We met Ryan Kwanten on the red carpet for last night's PGA awards, where True Blood would lose to Mad Men for Best TV Drama Series. Well, if you can't wrest the big awards from Mad Men, you might as well do what that suit-and-tie-bound show can never do for your next season: Ramp up the male shirtlessness. As the dumb-yet-lovable Jason Stackhouse, Kwanten spent the majority of True Blood's first season half-naked: The women he slept with kept getting killed, so he was constantly shot pre-, post-, or mid-coitus. But last year, Jason found God, and piousness always comes with a shirt. “Jason was relatively tame in terms of the skin exposure last season," Kwanten told us. "Joining a religious cult will do that to you. But he is going to get back to his gallivanting ways in season three [which premieres in June] until he finds love. So I’ve had to spend some more time in the gym.”

'True Blood' star: 'Lot of people getting naked this season'

By Kevork Djansezian, Getty Images
True Blood fans will be happy to hear that "a lot of people will be getting naked this season," Todd Lowe (chef Terry Bellefleur) told E!'s Marc Malkin at the SAG Awards Saturday night.

One of the folks who'll be stripping down for Season 3, airing on HBO in June, is vampire hottie Alexander Skarsgard, says True Blood's Carrie Preston, who plays waitress Arlene Fowler. (Skarsgard is shown here on the SAG red carpet with True Blood co-stars Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin.)

The battle for Jane Austen Great novelist, chick-lit pioneer, vampire. Will the real Miss Austen please stand up?

From Salon Magazine

Salon"The novels of Jane Austen/Are the ones to get lost in," wrote G.K. Chesterton, and millions of readers have done just that. Since 1995 in particular, when the BBC adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice" starring Colin Firth conquered untold numbers of female hearts, Austen and her (now) most celebrated creation, Mr. Darcy, have become touchstones for a certain strain of contemporary feminine longing. That the following year brought Helen Fielding's "Bridget Jones's Diary," which borrows its plot and hero's last name from "Pride and Prejudice," only cemented this idea in the public mind: Jane Austen is the grandmother of chick lit.

While she didn't quite invent the romantic comedy (Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing," a clear inspiration for "Pride and Prejudice," can probably claim that honor), Austen surely conceived and perfected it in its modern form; no one has ever surpassed "Pride and Prejudice," and not due to any lack of trying. Still, literary achievement can hardly explain the Austen craze. Many books labeled "classics" can also be fairly called "beloved," but Austen is canonical in two senses of the word at once. Who else among the acknowledged greatest novelists of all time has inspired such an abundant and robust body of fan fiction? What other author's fan fiction gets published so extensively?

The Austenphile Web site the Republic of Pemberley lists 60 published "sequels and continuations" of "Pride and Prejudice" alone. Austen's five other major novels have their spinoffs, as well, though none so many as "Pride and Prejudice." That count doesn't even include "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," a surprise bestseller last year and the first in a seemingly endless proliferation of classics mashups. It also doesn't factor in all the fiction in which Austen herself is a character, such as Stephanie Barron's mystery series in which the novelist plays detective. Or the newly published "Jane Bites Back," in which multiple publishing trends converge to make Austen a vampire who survives to this day in the guise of a lonely middle-aged bookseller in upstate New York, miffed by her posthumous transformation into a global brand. And then there's the subgenre of chick lit about contemporary women struggling to resign themselves to a dearth of Darcyesque beaux ("Austenland," "Me and Mr. Darcy"). We may love to get lost in Jane Austen's novels, but it's worth wondering if, by this point, they haven't gotten a bit lost in us.
