‘True Blood’ Open Thread: I Want to Do Bad Things To You

Yowch - folks are still pretty mad about S4 storylines...

This post contains spoilers through the fourth season finale of True Blood. And lots of rage. I should talk about the events of the season finale of True Blood, but before I do, I think it’s important to discuss something that didn’t happen. The most important — and most emotionally grounded — event that began this season was the brutal and repeated physical and sexual assault of Jason Stackhouse by the female werepanthers of Hotshot. The assaults themselves were tremendously uncomfortable to watch in a way I thought was powerful. The women involved, who are genetically and by means of acculturation effectively part of a patriarchal cult, were almost uniformly unaware that they were committing assault, with the exception of a young panther who helped him escape. The assault was set up to provide an interesting and useful gender-reversed set of issues, raising questions about Jason’s prior sexual reputation, the fact that men can respond physically even when they aren’t consenting to sex. And rather than dealing with it in any systemic way, the show essentially brushed it off with a scene where Jason decides God’s punishing him for sleeping around. Last night, rather than considering the lingering effects of the attack after Hoyt tells Jason there’s something fundamentally broken in him, the show just punted. Jason’s not a panther, so apparently, the lack of magical significance to his assault means it doesn’t have much emotional or human significance either.

Best Bon Temps Halloween costume: Arlene and Terry " Zombies are the new Vampires" costumes !

'True Blood' Season Finale Recap: Night of the Living Dead

In its four seasons, the only thing that's remained predictable about True Blood is that nothing is ever as it seems. Alan Ball, a master of twists and turns, has succeeded in leaving his audience salivating for Season Five with "And When I Die." Although Sookie makes her long-awaited choice between Bill and Eric, and Marnie's control over Bon Temps is finally vanquished, we are left with very little resolution as Season Four closes out, and a multitude of cliffhangers pepper the story lines. Long-lost villains from seasons past (Russell Edgington! Steve Newlin! Rene!) are creeping their way back into the lives of Bon Temps' residents, only hinting at the evil to come. And as the episode title teased, death is a prominent visitor in this season finale, with Jesus making the ultimate sacrifice to save the man he loves – and Tara doing the same to protect Sookie. The creatures of the True Blood universe took one hell of a beating this season, but it looks like it was just a warm-up to the terror that awaits them in Season Five.

HBO Series ‘True Blood’ Features Coquette Costume
Fairy costume donned by Lauren Bowles’ character Holly Cleary
Sep 13th, 2011 05:53 AM

CAMBRIDGE, Ontario, Canada—True Blood fans (Trubies) were glued to their television sets last weekend for the HBO hit series’ season finale which featured a Coquette Masquerade costume. Actress Lauren Bowles’ character Holly Cleary was shown wearing the Fairy costume, model M6033, from the Masquerade Collection.

“It is extremely exciting and flattering to see one of your creations come to life on such a well-known and popular hit series,” said Elaine Carson, senior designer. “As a designer this is a fabulous way for our work to be recognized and is quite rewarding.”

The piece is intricately made with varying layers of sheer nylon and topped off with an embroidered layer with ribbon and sequin appliqué. This costume was designed with the inspiration to be light, playful and youthful and when worn in this episode by Bowles’ character, the piece offers her a truly feminine appeal.

The Masquerade Collection is filled with a variety of costumes for Halloween and special occasions. In addition to fantasy and fairy tale costumes such as the Fairy, the collection ranges from career themes, animals, costumes for couples and role-play outfits.

Coquette’s Main Collection features various corsets similar to those famously worn by the character Jessica Hambe played by actress Deborah Ann Woll. This collection is comprised of a variety of styles of lingerie. Known for its unique craftsmanship of corsets, Coquette offers numerous styles, colors and sizes to choose from, and designs them with comfort and movement in mind.

Coquette is thrilled to have one of their popular costumes featured on the much watched series and expect that the Fairy costume will be in high demand for Halloween this year. With a significant array of costumes and fetish wear in the Darque Collection, all the Trubies out there will find it easy to recreate their favorite look from the show.

True Blood’s Season Finale Kills Off All the Right People by Meredith Woerner of io9.com

Last night, the season finale for the fourth year of True Blood came and went with a wet fart noise. Some of it was good, but most of it was bad. True Blood can do better than this, which is why we're looking forward to the fifth season.
But let me explain it to you in Pro/Con style.
Pro: Lafayette/Marnie calmly stares at Jesus in completely silence, nothing suspicious here…and stabs Jesus with the fork.
Con: Doo-da-doo, making coffee with Sookie! NOPE! Dead Grandma on the floor.
Con: Tara spent the night at Sookie's house, so now Tara is cool staying in the house with Eric in it? After that fantastic "Fuck you guys!" speech? Way to stick to your guns, Tara. Also, had you stayed at Lafayette's house, Jesus might not have been hand-forked.
Con: Sookie explains how Marnie channeled Gran all those days ago, notes how she took none of her advice. Sookie continues on saying that she "feels like her Gran is here," like really, really here. Which in True Blood foreshadowing language means, "Grams is coming back in about 20 minutes." So yay?
Pro: "What are we magnets for fucking craziness?" Yes. And clearly Sookie is keeping said magnet in her vagina.

True Blood Says Fin To Many Characters by Alex Cranz from Fempop.com

Characters Who Exhibited A Lot of Growth This Season

  • LaFayette. From the token black gay guy who swishes in to say something sassy to one of the best written characters on the show. He’s a mess of contradictions and Nelson Ellis makes them all WORK. One of the few characters in all of television with such a wonderfully consistent voice. A fry cook turned medium who could easily anchor his own show.
  • Jesus. From LaFayette’s eye candy to a living breathing character. He was conflicted about his cultural roots and the dark nature of them. He genuinely cared for others–including batshit crazy Marnie. He was gorgeous. He finally confronted his grandfather. Also he and LaFayette shared a deep and abiding love. Unlike some characters Jesus and LaFayette showed us and told us they were in love and we believed them.
  • Tara. She finally stopped being the victim of every bad thing ever–except for when she was Marnie’s evil henchwoman for an episode. She was smart, sassy and clever. Also she was gay and it only felt a little insulting instead of super insulting.

Gran returns and speaks words of wisdom to Sookie

Tara thinks this is what she'd say if she came back

  • To be good to each other.

  • And wear more sunscreen.

  • And stop gettin' into so much dang trouble

When Gran appears she says this to Sookie

S: I'm so lost without you. I don't know what to do.

G: Yes, you do. Answer's where it always is...in your heart.Bein' alone, it ain't nothin' to be afraid of, my Sookie. We're all alone at the end.

True Blood: In Death There Is A Heavy Peace by Jefwithonef Houston Press

Maybe it's the fact that Gothtopia grew up with no religion, or maybe it's that fact that Gothtopia has spent too many nights with Paul Fredric of Asmodeus X in a weird competition to see who can out-nihilist the other one. Either way, death has never really had any fear for us.
Oh sure, dying sounds like it sucks the calcium deposits right off the Grim Reaper's pelvis. Cancer, car wreck, rhinoceros encounter, they all sound like way too much freakin' ouchie. Death itself, though? No, we're not really scared.

Gary Calamar, who is in charge of True Blood's music and thus also the paycheck we draw from talking about it (Hi, Gary!), knew he needed just the right vibe for the Season 4 finale of True Blood, and he knew that "And When I Die" was the song that he wanted to use.
But which version worked the best? The Laura Nyro version? After all, she wrote it. Peter, Paul & Mary, or perhaps the more famous cover by Blood, Sweat & Tears?

No, in the end Calamar got in touch with The Heavy to record a brand new version that would fully embody the half-trailer park, half Dark Shadows vibe that makes up True Blood.

True Blood' recap: The witch is dead and so is... LA Times

Nan Flanagan, Debbie Pelt, Jesus and possibly Tara! The body count for Sunday's Season 4 finale of "True Blood" was high by nearly any measure and certainly full of surprises, like, say the fact that Steve Newlin's back -- and he's a vampire! -- not to mention that Russell Edgington sure seems to have managed to worm his way out of that concrete grave that Bill and Eric had confined him to at the end of last year...
The most heart-wrenching loss, clearly, is that of Jesus (because there's no way that Tara won't pull through, but more on that later). Things began to look not so good for Lafayette's magically inclined boyfriend as soon as the episode opened. He sincerely apologizes to Lafayette for dragging him into a world of magic before he was ready, totally unaware that Marnie's spirit has taken possession of Lafayette and has big plans to use his physical body to continue her vengeance tour through Bon Temps.

Three Bill stills from Sunday’s True Blood Season Finale

Friday, September 9, 2011

Everyone ( Kevin, Nelsan and Carrie) talk about the finale and the cliff hanger ....

Kevin " Jesus " Alejandro
Wonderwall: What can fans look forward to from the season finale?
Kevin Alejandro: Well, actually last weekend’s episode read as a season finale. It could have very easily been the season finale. It was so good. We all thought when we saw it and then all of a sudden they gave us the script for the actual season finale and it blew us out of the water. So, you can expect to be completely surprised in all different angles of the show. It’s more captivating and will leave you on the edge of your seats. And I guarantee you, eyebrows will be raised.
WW: Will we be left with a lot of questions or will things tie up nicely?
KA: A little bit of both. Definitely some things will get resolved and a lot of stuff is going to be left hanging in the air, where you’re just going to be like what the hell? Now I gotta wait all these months again, I gotta wait til next year to watch it. But that’s what makes “True Blood” great, I think.

Nelsan "Lafayette "Ellis

As for his day job, Ellis claims that his current True Blood arc, where Lafayette finds himself possessed by the witch Marnie, wasn’t an easy thing to film. “Alan Ball told me I couldn’t try to talk like her, and I was like, ‘Really?’ So that was challenging. ‘Who do I act like?’ ‘Not her.’ I had to create something else … We’ll see what the fans say about it. The most exciting part of the episode isn’t me, though — it’s the cliffhangers.”
But True Blood always ends its seasons with big cliffhangers! “No,” said Ellis gravely. “This year, it’s on a different scale. When we all read the script, we were like, ‘What?!’ The cliffhangers take it to another level.” Are we getting something akin to the first season finale, where we thought that Lafayette had perished in the final minutes? “I can’t give it away, but something like that, except, I can’t say, but something really big on that level is going to happen.” He laughed. “You’ll see, and it’ll throw you for a loop, and then you all will have to wait for eight months!”

here

Carrie " Arlene" Preston

Insider: This Sunday brings the season four finale, what can you tease?
Carrie: The finale has one of our biggest cliffhangers ever. Honestly, this show just gets crazier and crazier each season! This year, a dark shadow from Terry’s past will show its face. And the finale opens a door but I don’t know what’s beyond it. Bottom line, there’s never a moment where Arlene can relax. Just when you think everything is OK, something’s lurking around the corner – but that’s what is so great with our show.
