Werepanther role in 'True Blood' requires a stretch

It's easy to keep trade secrets when you're kept out of the loop.
Lindsay Pulsipher of True Blood, for example, couldn't spread spoilers about being a werepanther last year when she was cast as Crystal, because series creator/executive producer Alan Ball didn't tell her.
"I knew the tone of the show," says Pulsipher, whose swamp-country vixen returns in the second episode of the new season (8 p.m. Sunday on HBO). "I knew, given all of the creatures that exist in the world of True Blood [from vampires to werewolves to shapeshifters], that it would be fantastical and amazing.
"But Alan Ball gave me no details other than saying that Crystal had special powers."
Nevertheless, Pulsipher had good reason to believe that her character, who is involved in a star-crossed romance with human Jason Stackhouse (played by Ryan Kwanten), would be part feline.
For starters, fans of the show who were also familiar with Charlaine Harris' series of Southern vampire novels seemed convinced that this was the direction the story was taking.
"So I had an inkling," she says, "but I wasn't 100 percent positive until it was revealed to me in a script."

Lindsay Pulsipher is not a werepanther, but she plays one on True Blood!

On True Blood, Lindsay Pulsipher plays Crystal Norris, the troubled, inbred werepanther torn between her meth-dealing family and a tumultuous love affair with backwoods babe Jason Stackhouse. In real life, she’s a bubbly blonde artist who was raised by a Mormon family in Utah. Off the set, Pulsipher has had a heck of a time keeping the details on her character a secret from family and friends who are obsessed with the popular HBO series created by Alan Ball. Pulsipher, who will appear Saturday at the Seminole Coconut Creek Casino, recently talked to City Link about learning to move like a cat, working with Patrick Swayze and being surrounded by a set of fake blood.
What’s a typical day like on the True Blood set?
It’s one of the friendliest, most easygoing sets I’ve ever been on. The crew is so friendly and welcoming. Being a newcomer on the show, I couldn’t have felt more at home right away. That being said, it’s a very hard-working set, as well.
Your character on True Blood has such a heavy Southern accent. When your fans meet you, do they expect you to have that accent?
Yeah. I play a character who’s so different from who I am in regular life that people are kind of taken aback. When they first meet me, they’re like, “Are you Crystal? Wait, you are Crystal.” True Blood fans are so gracious and so cool. It’s been such an amazing experience just meeting all the fans.

I’m a huge True Blood fan. I’ve read the books, I’ve watched every episode. As far as I’m concerned, vampires have not overstayed their welcome. Alright, maybe the Twilight vampires. I just got a chance to chat with Lindsay Pulsipher who plays Jason Stackhouse’s love interest, Crystal. (I did her makeup for the upcoming film, Do Not Disturb.) She had a pretty big revelation this week. And yes, we do mention what it was. If you’re afraid of spoilers, I’ll mark it in the question so you can skip that one. Lindsey gives us all the info about playing a character who is constantly sporting a black eye, nudity on camera and what it’s been like to work with an engaged couple planning a wedding on set. Of course I’m talking about the recently married Anna Paquin and Steven Moyer. She also lets us know what it’s like to have wild animals on set. No, I’m not talking about her co-stars. (Please, Charlaine Harris fans. If you’ve read the books, don’t spoil plot points in the comments section without a spoiler alert!)
Did you watch the show before you auditioned for True Blood?

I did! Yeah.
Did you know what character you wanted to play?
Well, you know I hadn’t ever read the books. I hadn’t read the books yet, so I didn’t know who Crystal was. And when I got the audition, she was described as this mysterious girl who runs through the woods. That was all I knew. [laughs] So I really didn’t know where they were taking her and what was happening. I was surprised when I found out who she was in the books. I thought, oh this will be a really fun character to play.

INTERVIEW: Lindsay Pulsipher (Crystal Norris) from True Blood

True Blood is well into its third season, and it has been fantastic so far. It’s probably the craziest and wildest season yet, and I am enjoying every minute of it. One thing creator Alan Ball doesn’t shy away from is the introduction of new characters. This season we’ve seen new (and sexy) werewolves (ahem Alcide), a new Merlotte’s waitress, and a wolf pack who are into drugs and vampire blood. Crystal Norris (one of those new characters) is a love interest for Jason, but there’s still an air of mystery surrounding her. She comes from the Norris family, who are involved with drugs and she appears to have a fiancee. But what is the real deal with Jason’s new crush? I recently had the chance to chat with Lindsay Pulsipher, who plays Crystal, about the mysterious role, what’s coming up for Crystal and what draws her character (besides the obvious) to Jason Stackhouse.
What originally drew you to the role of Crystal Norris?
I haven’t read the books, but after I got to know her through the writers of True Blood — through their eyes — I was just fascinated with her mystery. She was written with a lot of mystery, and she has several layers going on. And as we’ll soon see later in the season, she’s got a lot of things that she’s trying to cope with and deal with in her life, and I just loved the aspect of being able to play such a complicated, mysterious character. It was really exciting for me.
Definitely. Crystal also has a very interesting background. Can you tell us a little bit more about her family and where she came from?
Little things are revealed throughout the season — more and more about her past and her history — but she’s from this family that cooks meth and they’re meth heads basically (laughs). She’s never really left this compound. It’s all she’s ever really known. She doesn’t really have a social life outside of the compound, so the world outside of that is just so big and intimidating to her I think.

 It was seeing the movie "Annie" at age 8 that got Utah actor Lindsay Pulsipher dreaming about becoming a star.


Some 20 years later, the former Cottonwood Heights resident has made it in Hollywood -- though she's not belting out another version of "Tomorrow." Instead, she will be surrounded by bloodthirsty vampires in the new season of HBO's hit horror series "True Blood," where she will be a regular cast member for at least nine episodes. The new third season began June 13 on the pay cable network.

But it's not until Sunday's second episode that Pulsipher makes her first appearance as the mysterious Crystal Norris, a woman who becomes the new girlfriend of Jason Stackhouse (Ryan Kwanten).

"The writers are really focusing on the relationship between Crystal and Jason," she said from Los Angeles. "Up to this point, he has never settled down, and I think she really knocks him off his feet. They have this magical relationship, and it's brand new for both of them. It's kind of a powerful, explosive relationship."

Exclusive Interview: Lindsay ( Crystal Norris) Pulsipher Tames THE BEAST and TRUE BLOOD

Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, Lindsay Pulsipher has wanted to be an actress since seeing her mother perform in plays in the theater when she was a little girl. Having recently played a series regular on the A&E series The Beast, which starred the late Patrick Swayze in his critically acclaimed final role and can currently be seen on Crackle (www.crackle.com), Sony Pictures Entertainment's online video network, the musician and painter is living her dream.

In this exclusive interview with IESB, Lindsay Pulsipher talked about how she will always remember her experience working on The Beast, as well as her excitement for fans to see her in her latest role as Crystal Norris on Season 3 of the hit HBO series True Blood and how she hopes to continue to play a wide variety of different characters in her career.

IESB: How did you get into acting, as a career?

Lindsay: It was a couple different things. My mom was an actress. She did some theater when I was a little girl and I remember seeing her in that play "You Can't Take It With You" and thinking, "Wow, that's my mom, but I don't recognize her at all. She's a different person." It just looked really exciting, so I got into some theater groups and did children's community theater.

Can you talk about your character in the show?

Lindsay Pulsipher: I can tell you a little bit of what I know. I still don't know. Like I said, with TV you kind of get thrown all these curveballs. But she's this mysterious girl that Jason Stackhouse sees. He sees her in the forest. You know how he is with the ladies. He's quite the ladies man. He sees her through the trees and his interest is piqued and then she runs away. They meet up again later in Bon Temps. They have this really amazing connection and then it goes from there.

What's the difference between working on something like 'True Blood' compared to 'The Beast'?

Lindsay Pulsipher: Well, every project is different. To be honest I've actually only shot one episode of 'True Blood'. I'm working again today. But everyone is so nice. I was a little intimidated coming into a show that's already well established and really popular and people love it. I was a little intimidated. It's like going to your first day of school, you don't really know anybody and are a little nervous but everyone is so cool and so welcoming and they love their job. You can tell that everyone loves their job. So all of that dissipated very quickly and I felt right at home instantly. Every project varies. That's not to say that 'The Beast' wasn't like that. That was amazing, too. You just tend to form these relationships with people because you're with them. You spend so much time with them. Everybody on 'The Beast' was great as well. I love the bonding. It's really great.
