True Blood’s Chris Bauer on His Limited Screen Time, Andy Bellefleur’s Ancestry, and V’s Real-Life Drug Equivalent

Will Bon Temps’ local sheriff and resident V-addict Andy Bellefleur finally get clean? Last week’s intervention episode had us feeling hopeful — and gave us insight into why Andy is the way he is (he grew up with a lot of money and no love). But when we spoke with actor Chris Bauer, we felt unsettled enough to ask him what fate awaits his troubled character: Will he finally sober up and be the hero? Of course Bauer couldn’t give us the firm "yes" we wanted to hear, but he kindly indulged our theories, and shared his thoughts on True Blood’s Emmy shutout, his limited screen time, and V’s real-life drug equivalent.
What did you think of your big intervention episode?
You know, it feels so good just to get a few extra minutes of screen time.
Is that frustrating, to share screen time with so many actors?
It could be a lot worse. But in such a good scenario, yeah, that’s what’s hard about it. I still have the challenge of trying to do the best work I can, whether I have to do that with one syllable or five scenes. At least that’s how I console myself.

Watch Chris Bauer on HBO's "True Blood," and you'd assume he was born to play Deputy Andy Bellefleur, the gruff, depressive, alcoholic detective investigating the show's supernatural mayhem. But then you'd think the same thing if you watched him as Frank Sobotka, the doomed union boss in Season 2 of "The Wire" -- a sort of burly, 21st century Willy Loman of organized labor. Bauer played New York Yankees manager Bob Cerv in the HBO film "61"; Fred Yokas, husband of Officer Faith Yokas, on NBC's "Third Watch"; Huey Farrell on "The Black Donnellys"; and fetish photographer Irwin Klaw in "The Notorious Bettie Page." You've also probably seen Bauer play a lot of cops, inmates and military guys. He has that look about him: broad-shouldered, bullet-headed, no-nonsense. If "The Incredibles" were a live-action series, he could play the dad.
The Los Angeles native's secret weapons are his complete emotional transparency and his volcanic core of feeling; he can seem like the sweetest, tenderest man you've ever seen or the most terrifying. I've been impressed by Bauer ever since I saw him on "The Wire," but I don't think I realized what a great actor he was until I saw him in a tiny part in the Showtime movie "Our Fathers," about the investigation into pedophilia allegations in the Boston archdiocese. Bauer played an adult survivor of abuse who was determined to make the archbishop accept some responsibility for what happened to him as a child. Bauer's scenes were so unfussy, direct and powerful that they seemed to transcend movie acting. For a few minutes, I felt as though I was hearing a real person speak directly to me, and he was breaking my heart.

'True Blood's' Chris Bauer: 'Andy as a portrait of an addict is pretty accurate'

Say Hallelujah Chris ! "I may be testing yours and a lot of the audience's patience" with the V addiction storyline.

When "True Blood" made a year time jump into Season 4, a lot of characters were doing something completely different from when we last saw them in Season 3 and Chris Bauer's Sheriff Andy Bellefleur was no exception. His V addiction has ramped up Andy's already-explosive personality.

"As soon as Season 4 opening, it was pretty obvious he was deep into the effects of vampire blood. I think he's been at it pretty hardcore for awhile," Bauer tells Zap2it. He laughs as he adds, "I may be testing yours and a lot of the audience's patience" with the V addiction storyline.

But Bauer also says (and we agree) that while "True Blood" can be lighter fare, it really is portraying a serious subject matter in Andy's drug addiction.

"I think for all of the comic book-type action and energy of 'True Blood,' some situations are paradoxically pretty deep. Andy as a portrait of an addict is pretty accurate. As is with the case with an addict, it's got to get really, really, really bad and there's got to be consequences before you're going to change much," Bauer tells us.

Fact: Chris Bauer looks -- and sounds -- nothing like Bon Temps' resident drunken detective, Andy Bellefleur -- the troubled character he currently plays on the hit HBO series "True Blood."
And even though he may have perfectly embodied the corrupted union boss Frank Sobotka on the critically acclaimed show "The Wire," in person, Bauer comes off as much more confident, kind-hearted and stable than the deeply flawed characters he's known for playing.

I let myself into Bill's house and found the Bible exactly where he'd said.

Bill opened the book with gentle fingers and turned a page. He was looking at a family page, with entries infaded ink, made in several different handwritings.
"I made these," he said in a whisper. "These here." He pointed at a few lines of writing.

William Thomas Compton,his mother had written, or perhaps his father.Born April 9, 1840. Another hand had writtenDied November 25, 1868.
"You have a birthday," I said, of all the stupid things to say. I'd never thought of Bill having a birthday.

"I was the second son," Bill said. "The only son who grew up."
I remembered that Robert, Bill's older brother, had died when he was twelve or so, and two other babies had died in infancy.

"Sarah, my sister, died childless." I remembered that. "Her young man died in the war. All the young men died in the war. But I survived, only to die later. This is the date of my death, as far as my family is concerned. It's in Sarah's handwriting."

"Here is the name of my wife," he said, his voice quieter and quieter.
I bent over again to read,Caroline Isabelle Holliday. For one second, the room swung sideways, until I realized it just could not be.
"And we had children," he said. "We had three children."

Their names were there, too.Thomas Charles Compton, b. 1859. She'd gotten pregnant right after they'd married, then.

Sarah Isabelle Compton, b. 1861.Named after her aunt (Bill's sister) and her mother. She'd been born around the time Bill had left for the war.Lee Davis Compton, b. 1866. A homecoming baby.Died 1867,a different hand had added.

"The other two children?" I asked.

"They lived," he said, the tension in his face easing a little. "I had left then, of course. Tom was only nine when I died, and Sarah was seven.

"My descendant Jessie Compton, from whom I received my house, was the last of my direct line," Bill told me. "My mother's line, too, has thinned down, until the remaining Loudermilks are only distantly related to me.
But Jessie did descend from my son Tom, and apparently, my daughter Sarah married in 1881. She had a baby in—Sarah had a baby! She had four babies! But one of them was born dead."

"Look, Sookie," Bill said, pointing. "Look! My Sarah's daughter, named Caroline for her grandmother, married a cousin of hers, Matthew Phillips Holliday. And her second child was Caroline Holliday." His face was glowing.

"So old Mrs. Bellefleur is your great-granddaughter."

"So Andy," I continued, before I could think twice about it, "is your, ah, great-great-great-grandson.And Portia . . ."

Now we don't know for sure how she is connected but she may be laying on the grave of one of Bill's descendants.

General Notes: In True Blood HBO series Bill is turned into a vampire by Lorena
on his way home from the Civil War in 1865. He tell Sookie he became a vampire
when he was "30 human years old" so that would have him born in 1835.
He also has a son, Lee after he returns home from the war in the books but in
TB he only seems to have the two children Thomas and Sarah as in the photo and
the flashback.
