Grammy® Nomination for the 'True Blood' Soundtrack

I was lucky enough to grab a few minutes with Gary Calamar, our music supervisor, about his Grammy® nomination for the great work he did on our soundtrack...

GIANNA: Congrats on your Grammy nomination!
GARY: Thank you!
GIANNA: Any big plans for the awards show?
GARY: I will be attending, I'm really looking forward to it.  It's my fourth nomination, all Alan Ball related - two for Six Feet Under soundtracks, two for True Blood now.  I am indebted to Alan and his wonderful work.
GIANNA: Aren't we all?
GARY: We have some tough competition, so it's really an honor to be nominated.  And I'm excited that Lucinda Williams's song "Kiss Like Your Kiss" is also nominated for best original song.
GIANNA: How did it come about that she would write an original song for the show?
GARY: We met with someone from her publishing company, Warner Chappell, and we were throwing around some ideas and she mentioned that Lucinda was working on some new material.  We already had her on the first soundtrack, we licensed her song "Lake Charles."  So we met with her and her manager/co-musician/husband Tom Overby and told them what we were looking for and she came back with a very rough version, which she recorded in her kitchen, of "Kiss Like Your Kiss."
GIANNA: How did that version turn out?
GARY: It was slow and romantic.  Talking with Alan, he said they were kind of heavy on these adventurous, upbeat songs and would love to have something romantic and nice in the show.  So she finished it for us and I suggested some sort of duet.  We roped in Elvis Costello, who is a friend of hers, and I'm thrilled with the way it came out.

True Blood not just soft-core vampire porn: It's rock with bite

Full disclosure: I’m not really a fan of True Blood, the Southern Gothic vampire series on HBO which has become quite the cultural phenomenon.

I must admit that I tried to pick it up midstream, leaving me baffled at the plot machinations, but I don’t think it would have mattered much either way. To me, it seemed an uneasy mix of acting hambonery and soft-core porn. Hey, whatever floats your boat; it’s just not my cup of tea. (Or cup of blood, as the case may be.)

That said, the one refreshing thing about True Blood the fact that these vampires had little regret about their bloodlust. No brooding seems to be allowed in Bon Temps, Louisiana, which certainly bucks the trend among the nightwalkers these days. Luckily, the curators of True Blood: Music From the HBO Original Series — Volume 2 have seized upon this abandon and delivered a compilation that might as well be subtitled Undead And Loving It.

Music to boil your blood: True Blood wants to do bad things to you.

Fangbangers, take note: True Blood brings down the curtain on its hellraising' second season this weekend, on HBO.

And make no mistake about it. This has been a hell of a season - pun intended - for what is suddenly TV's most addictive, adrenalin-fuelled serial thriller.

There are so many reasons to admire Alan Ball's allegory about life, love and timeless longing, it's hard to know where to begin.

So why not start with the music?

I finally got a chance to catch up on unwatched episodes the other night - True Blood is a show that must be seen at night to be truly appreciated - when it suddenly occurred to me. The so-called exit songs - the songs that play over the end credits at the end of each episode - are absolutely brilliant. They're brilliantly chosen, and they often have a lot to say about the episode we've just seen. As chosen by Ball and his music supervisor, Gary Calamar, they're like end scenes in-and-of themselves.

The one that jumped out at me - or got under my skin, if you prefer - was New World in My View, as performed by Sister Gertrude Morgan and King Britt, which closed the Aug. 23 episode.

Episode 2.10, "New World in My View"

​One of the reasons Rocks Off began this column was to help bring to the limelight some of the lesser-known artists that Alan Ball has been known to feature on True Blood. That well's been a little dry the last two episodes, those being centered around comparatively mainstream artists like Lyle Lovett and Beck. Maybe it's because those episodes have been concerned with civilized soul-searching, mercy and regret. Now the episodes are focused on the town on Bon Temps as the setting for the mother of all mad bacchanals featuring attractions like meat altars, oral sex plus what we believe is cheese whiz, and human sacrifice. Fitting, then, that a religious wingnut should serenade us.

There once was a lady from Lafayette, Ala., named Gertrude Morgan. Born in 1900, she lived a fairly regular life until age 38, when God told her that she should take up being a street evangelist. Upon hearing the news, she left her husband and family, headed to New Orleans, and opened a couple of orphanages and missionaries. God continued to advise Morgan for the rest of her life.

VAMPIRE CON '09: CRY, LITTLE SISTER--come to your TRUE BLOOD!

Fangoria reports that Cry Little Sister will be used in True Blood this season
( I think it will be one tonight !)

Before the New Beverly Cinema screening of THE LOST BOYS last night, G Tom Mac introduced a new video for his brand new version of "Cry, Little Sister", the haunting LOST BOYS' anthem.

Now the song is being used, appropriately enough, for the HBO series TRUE BLOOD -- in the video, he performs the song as we see clips of Bill, Sookie and the rest of the gang. What's interesting--and may be blasphemous for some Goths--is that it's a country version of the song!

"I wanted to do a version of 'Cry, Little Sister' that had a swampy, bluesy Robert Johnson feel, so it would fit in the Southern Gothic world of TRUE BLOOD," G Tom Mac explains. "They wanted to use the song and I think it fits."

Check out a preview of the song in the widget below (it's the first track under the "songs" tab), and look for the TRUE BLOOD version of this classic on iTunes within the coming days!
