Sookie and Eric : Worst Paranormal Book Sex Scenes ??

I’ve heard from numerous paranormal fantasy authors that the hardest sequences to write well are sex scenes – and, from a reviewer’s perspective, I couldn’t agree more. For every emotionally supercharged, wildly erotic passage that I read, there are dozens – no, hundreds – more that just don’t, ahem, measure up. Too much anatomical play-by-play (i.e. Pornographic Twister) makes for a gratuitous and repulsive reading experience and too much flowery description is downright comical. Words like turgid, heaving, and throbbing are a clear indication – at least for me – that a cheesy sex scene is quickly approaching. I can almost smell the Velveeta now…

Before listing some examples of good sex scenes gone bad, however, I feel it necessary to point out that a fair amount of the sex scenes in paranormal fantasy novels are meant to be amusing – Nicole Peeler’s Jane True saga and Charlaine Harris’s Southern Vampire series, for example – so please keep that in mind when reading the sometimes hilarious and sometimes deeply disturbing excerpts below.

Many readers tell me that they would rather have no sex scene at all than a badly written or awkwardly choreographed sex scene – but I disagree. Sometimes a bad sex scene produces laugh-out-loud entertainment and makes an unremarkable read suddenly memorable – albeit for the wrong reasons. And in the case of novels like Peeler’s "Tracking the Tempest," bizarrely described sex sequences can make a good story truly unforgettable – for all of the right reasons.

What about that pesky fairy genealogy? What book contains the famous shower scene? (I’m just kidding on that last one; everyone knows the shower scene.) How do the short stories fit into the chronology of the books?
We’ve assembled The Sookie Stackhouse Companion to answer all of these questions and hopefully a few more, to give readers a thorough look at the world of Bon Temps, and to provide extra snippets of interesting information about Sookie’s world and the people who live and die in it. Though this book is about the books, we also give a nod to our favorite television show, True Blood, by including an interview with one of my favorite people, Alan Ball.
Lots of people helped me assemble this companion, and I’m going to try to thank all of them in the acknowledgments. What's Cookin' in Bon Temps A Selection of Down-Home Southern Recipes Antoine's Fried Pickles
Time: 20 minutes
Ingredients:

• 1 cup self-rising flour
• 1 tsp. baking powder
• 1/4 tsp. paprika
• Dash of red pepper
• 1/3 cup milk
• 1/3 cup beer (any brand)
• Whole dill pickles
• Oil

This is a variation on a recipe that became famous after its use at a restaurant close to Tunica, Mississippi.
Sift together all of the dry ingredients. Add the milk and the beer in equal amounts until the mixture is the desired consistency. Slice the dill pickles into round 1/4"- to 3/8"-thick chips. Dip the slices in the batter until batter is gone, and fry in deep oil. Turn once or twice to brown evenly.
Tip: Enjoy them with cold beer.

Call off your dogs, spoiler police. A new study from the University of California at San Diego suggests that knowing the outcome of a story doesn't ruin it -- in fact, it increases its pleasures. Rosebud is a sled, bitches!For their study, Nicholas Christenfeld and Jonathan Leavitt provided participants with a variety of "ironic-twist, mystery and literary" short stories from authors including John Updike, Roald Dahl, Anton Chekhov, Agatha Christie and Raymond Carver. Some readers read the stories in their original forms. Some were given a preface with the spoiler. Others had a spoiler rewritten into the middle of the story. Now here's the SHOCKING TWIST: Nearly every time, the readers preferred the "spoiled" versions. And the more of a gotcha the story contained -- like Ambrose Bierce's "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" -- the more readers enjoyed knowing the outcome ahead of time. By the way, he's dead. Charlaine Harris Sets End Date For Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire Mysteries Series

A little more than ten years ago, Sookie Stackhouse first appeared as the narrator and protagonist of a Charlaine Harris book called Dead Until Dark. After pretty solid sales, she returned a year later in Living Dead In Dallas. Then another book followed and then another until a new yearly entry in her Southern Vampire Mysteries was an expected, regular and high-selling guarantee. In the fall of 2008, writer/ producer Alan Ball adapted the series into the HBO phenomenon True Blood, and since, the Charlaine Harris novels have exploded in popularity. In theory, they could have gone on forever, but the author announced a definitive end date earlier this week.

Speaking to Popcorn Biz, Harris said she's committed to writing a thirteenth book but has already made plans to give Sookie and her vampiric friends definitive closure. Whether that means she'll be killed off or an apocalyptic showdown between humans and the undead will occur is all speculation at this point, but don't expect her to change her mind. Charlaine Harris was very clear on that in the interview.

VAMPIRE MYTHOLOGY IN DEAD UNTIL DARK

PHYSICAL TRAITS: Vampires resemble humans and look as they did when they were 'turned' from human to vampire. However, Caucasian vampires will be paler than they were in human form when 'turned'. Any temporary scarring or bruises had by humans when 'turned' will heal when they become vampires. Vampires do not age.

Vampires have a cooler body temperatures than humans and are cold to touch. Vampires incisors extend into fangs when they are angry, excited, aroused, need to fight or see blood. Apart from when going through these emotions or events, vampire fangs are retracted back into their incisors. Vampires do not need to breathe and do not have the need to fidget or itch. They can stand as still as a statue and remain expressionless. SUPERNATURAL ABILITIES: Healthy vampires are a good deal stronger and faster than humans with heightened reflexes, stamina and senses. As they get older, their strength, speed, reflexes and senses increase further. They can also heal quickly. Fresh vampire blood is also able to heal wounded humans as well as increase that person's strength, speed, reflexes, senses, stamina and physical appearance. Stale or less fresh vampire blood can be used a narcotic by humans and while it does everything that fresh vampire blood does, it can cause people to become high, mentally ill or cause humans to go into aggressive frenzies, attacking or sookie killing others or themselves

Vampires are also capable of learning a number of supernatural skills. The most common of these is the ability to glamor humans. Glamoring is a form of hypnosis that requires a vampire to make direct eye contact and use their voices to hypnotize a human into doing their bidding. Glamoring does not effect other vampires or other supernatural creatures. Some vampires are also able to shapeshift, levitate, fly or use telepathy as well as a number of other supernatural skills. SUSTENANCE/FEEDING: Vampires must sleep during the day, away from exposure to daylight. Only old vampires are able to rouse themselves during the day and even then they will be severely weakened. Vampires who try and remain awake during the day in a room unexposed to daylight will not only be weakened but will get the 'bleeds', this is where blood will slowly leak out of them, weakening them further. Vampires do not need to produce waste.

Vampires cannot eat normal food or drink normal drinks. They must drink the blood of humans, animals or synthetic blood. Human blood tastes best to vampires although they can sustain themselves on synthetic blood although it does not taste very good. Animal blood is also drank by some vampires although they are considered to be those of an unstable mental health. Vampires who do not drink blood will become so thirsty that they will go into complete frenzies, draining anyone they meet. They will not die from drinking blood, they will just become uncontrollable and sometimes mad. Vampires also become uncomfortable and begin to ache if they do not get blood. They become weaker also. Vampires find freshly deceased corpses and pure fairy blood irresistible and those with some fairy blood more appealing. Maenad blood is toxic to them. BECOMING A VAMPIRE: A vampire must drain a human of all their blood, effectively killing that human, and replace it with some of their own blood. The vampire and drained human will then sleep in the ground for two to three nights until the drained human rises as a vampire. The newborn vampire will be thirsty and need to feed on blood. The newborn vampire will have to stay with their 'maker' for some time as the 'maker' shows the newborn vampire or 'ward' how to live the life of a vampire. Although having some control, newborn vampires will often lose control of their impulses and can cause serious harm or trouble. Newborn vampires must leave their human lives behind as they are likely on impulse to attack their family or friends.

Newborn vampires must answer to their maker and are unable to resist if their maker commands them to do something. Eventually, makers will allow their wards to go out into the World themselves to be independent and free. Wards can return to their makers if they wish. VAMPIRE POLITICS: Since The Great Revelation (when vampires revealed themselves to humans), vampires have become involved in human politics in countries where they are accepted such as campaigning for vampire-human marriage.

Unknown to the majority of humans, vampires have their own political system. In the United States Of America, each of the States are split into kingdoms or queendoms, ruled by a king or queen or by both a king and queen. Each kingdom is split into areas (formerly called fiefdoms) ruled by sheriffs.

Older vampires are more powerful than younger vampires. Vampires run on a pecking

order with older vampires having a say over younger vampires. A younger vampire committing a crime against an older vampire is a major offence and would see that vampire punished by their sheriff, king or queen or vampire organisations such as the American Vampire League or the magister of the North American Vampire League. Vampires, regardless of age, must respect these authorities. INTERACTION WITH OTHER SUPERNATURAL BEINGS: Vampires dislike shapeshifters and werewolves but will join with them for common supernatural causes. Vampires find fairies irresistible because the smell of blood is so enticing. Fairies are in danger of being drained by vampires because of their irresistible. Vampires seem to be accepting of practioneer witches and Wiccans. HOW TO KILL A VAMPIRE: Vampires can be killed by wooden objects through the heart, decapitation and being burned to death by fire. A disease known as Sino-AIDS and severe use of silver can lead to silver poisoning which can kill them. VAMPIRE VULNERABILITIES: Silver is toxic to them and causes their skin to burn although it only causes them great pain but in most cases does not kill them. Garlic also disgusts them. Vampires are weakened by silver, staying awake in the day and starved of blood. They can also contract certain diseases such as Hepatitis D which will weaken them for a month. SOCIAL STATUS: Older vampires are more respected socially than younger vampires. However, most vampires live in harmony with each other and racism and homophobia are virtually non-existent in vampire society.

Since vampires 'came out of the coffin' with the invention of synthetic blood, they have tried to live amongst humans (this is known as mainstreaming). Vampires are tolerated in countries such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan and the majority of first World countries but are hunted in the majority of Islamic and South American countries. Even in countries where they are tolerated, there is still major bigotry towards vampires by humans with many being cautious or living in fear of them. INTERACTION WITH HUMANS: Some vampires try to "mainstream" and live among humans, while others attempt to live as they had before the Great Revelation. VAMPIRE BLOOD: When humans drink Vampire blood, they become more attractive to other humans and vampires and sexually potent. They also gain strength and more control over themselves. They also feel healthier and tend to be able to heal faster. Vampire blood is one of the most sought-after commodities on the black-market because of its potency (even though some humans have gone crazy after drinking it). The effects last depending on the amounts of blood that was ingested.

‘True Blood’ too draining? Charlaine Harris says Sookie Stackhouse novels must end [updated]

 “Dead Reckoning,” the 11th installment in author Charlaine Harris‘ Sookie Stackhouse mystery series, is set to arrive this May — not long before the hit TV series inspired by the franchise, HBO’s “True Blood,” returns for a fourth season — but the novelist now is looking ahead to the conclusion of her long-running saga. [FOR THE RECORD: An earlier version of this post misstated the numeric place of  "Dead Reckoning" in the Harris series.]

“Truthfully, the next two books will probably be the last two books in the series,” Harris said last week. “I still love Sookie, but I’m beginning to want to write something else, and Sookie’s kind of taken over my life. I was able to write other things for the first few years I was involved in Sookie, but then after the start of the television show she took over so much of my time because of my increased publicity obligations that it’s been very hard to write other things, and I really need to do that.”

Banned Book week : Sookie books by Charlaine Harris make top of lists

The Canadian Library Association’s Advisory Committee on Intellectual Freedom has released the results of its annual survey of challenges to library resources and policies in Canada for 2009

The most challenged author reported in the annual survey of Canadian libraries in 2009 was Charlaine Harris for her series of ten adult novels entitled The Southern Vampire Mysteries. The entire series was reported on four separate occasions within the same library system. Two other series were each challenged once, Negima! Magister Negi Magi, by Ken Akamatsu, a manga series of 29 titles known in Japan as Magical Teacher Negima!,and Gossip Girl by Cecily von Ziegesar, a young adult novel series of 15 titles that became the 2007 inspiration for the “Gossip Girl” teen drama television series.

Sookie Stackhouse, the Self-Educated Vampire's Girlfriend

ummm ..Jason went to college,  its not that they are uneducated family. Sookie cant be in a classroom as she is too distracted by all the minds talking. I will say as the books has progressed --she is more in control ( she credits Bill) maybe she could take online courses from Renard Parish Junio College ??

I was talking to a Very Dear Friend Who Shall Remain Nameless To Protect Her Pleasure Reading Habits recently about the Southern Vampire mysteries, on which True Blood is based. One of the things we agreed on that we really liked about the books is that the main character, the tough-but-adorable Sookie Stackhouse, is self-educated. Given that Sookie is supernatural herself, and rather lusciously attractive to a range of smokin' vampires and shape-shifters, that's perhaps not the thing that should most make her stand out, but it's an oddly appealing characteristic.

Sookie is, for those not in the know (but not remotely a spoiler), a telepath. Charlaine Harris, to her credit, treats this extremely sensibly (something she actually does well with most of her supernatural creations). Sookie works as a barmaid, because the job only requires so much attention, and it's awfully hard to concentrate when other people's thoughts keep running through your consciousness like radio stations coming in and out of tune. She couldn't swing college, because trying to nail down coursework when you're surrounded by insane adolescents newly turned on to independence was, um, distracting. She doesn't have a lot of money, so she doesn't really travel. As a result, what Sookie knows about the world, she basically learned herself.
