Author Charlaine Harris thrills readers with an introduction to the supernatural world with the first in the Sookie Stackhouse series Dead Until Dark. The book introduces Sookie Stackhouse, a native to Bon Temps, La., where the supernatural is commonplace and gossip is a daily staple. The townspeople gather daily in local hub Merlotte's, the local bar owned by none other than a sup (short for supernatural). Harris develops an enthralling story in an old-fashioned area where the people get an update into modern day events through Sookie's new social life. Sookie, a waitress, is no stranger to the supernatural. Readers learn Sookie is telepathic and early in the book is considered crazy because of her ability. Sookie's difference gives her a clean perspective on vampires who have only recently come out to humans in the fictional town. Bon Temps is almost the last place to get a vampire visitor in the form of a mysterious man, Bill, who arrives in Bon Temps and sits at Sookie's table expecting service. Sookie not only introduces herself to the vampire but spends her first two encounters protecting him from locals who want to drain him for valuable vampire blood.BOOK REVIEW

Vampire Bill Says, "Sookie."
Alex- the- girl at 'Please try again' blog writes a very nice review for 'Dead Until Dark '
Since before the days of Bella Lugosi, Vampires have been haunting the dreams of just about every young girl in existence. Infamous, sexy, haunting, and hidden, vampires have stayed in the closet of humanity for thousands of years...
until...
now.
Charlaine Harris has outed the closeted vampire, and thrown them into the night. Due to the development of a synthetic blood, vampires across the nation have publicly come out of the coffin, and ever since, Miss Sookie Stackhouse of Bon Temps, Louisiana has been "dying" to meet one.
In "Dead Until Dark," the first of the southern vampire mystery series written by Charlaine Harris, we find young, beautiful, blonde, but frustratingly single, Sookie Stackhoue. Why single? It appears Miss Stackhouse has a "secret" ability that allows her to hear the thoughts of those around her, and while some might consider this a gift, it makes dating near to impossible. Imagine knowing exactly what your main squeeze was thinking 24/7 including when you're both in the middle of doing the nevermind. Er, yeah, right.
Life for Miss Sookie was as boring and lonely as it could get until one dark mysterious (setting up the ambiance for you) night, when the doors to Merlotte's, a local feed and watering hole where Sookie waitresses, opens and in walks Bill. Vampire Bill. Tall, pale, handsome...the silent kind. Vampire Bill, you had me at hello, and you didn't even say hello. Mr. Bill Compten, a former confederate soldier, has come home to Bon Temps as sole (un)living inheritor of his estate. Aside from his dashing good looks, pearly white teeth, and bodacious sideburns, Miss Sookie's main attraction to Mr. Bill is his brain (snort...yeah...right). It seems that she cannot read his thoughts. Delighted at the silence, Sookie is drawn and captivated by the charming vampire, so it is no surprise when later that night Sookie risks her life to save him from certain death. Bill is later able to return the favor and thus begins the whirlwind of an affair that leads Sookie through a maze of vampire bars, exotic Vikings, Elvis, a stake supper, and a vampire hating serial killer that has Sookie's name written on the top of the "to kill" list.

Dead until Dark audiobook
The Williamsburg Regional Library write a great review about DUD and gushes about audio version-If you haven't "listened" to a Sookie book you are REALLY missing out..
I fell in love with audiobooks about a year ago. They’re great to listen to while doing housework and driving to and from work. A month or two ago, I decided to give Charlaine Harris’ Southern Vampire series a try, to see what it was I was missing. My husband loves these books, and I usually share his taste.
The main character, Sookie Stackhouse, is not a vampire, she’s a telepath. She lives with her grandmother and works as a barmaid at Merlotte’s, a bar in Bon Temps, a small town in Louisiana. Vampires have recently become legal citizens, after the Japanese develop a synthetic blood that makes it possible for vampires to live in the open, since they no longer need to hunt humans for sustenance.
Sookie falls in love with the first vampire who walks into the bar, an undead Civil War veteran named Bill Compton. Being a telepath makes relationships difficult, and Bill has a mind that is silent to Sookie. She loves that she can’t hear what he’s thinking.
Shortly after Sookie meets Bill and some of his undead friends, one of her coworkers turns up dead, and Sookie has reason to fear for her own life. There are at least two murders in the first book, and the solving of them wasn’t what made the mystery a good read. The fact that I can’t remember if there were two or three murders attests to that. They seemed almost incidental to the story, which was more of a humorous romance and vampire story than a mystery.
Listening to Johanna Parker reading Dead Until Dark is a lot of fun. She uses a Southern accent for Sookie and sounds like she’d fit right in in a small town in northern Louisiana. There’s a bit of gore, a bit of vampiric sex (which apparently is easy for the characters to become addicted to), and quite a bit of humor. Dead Until Dark is the first in the series. So far, there are eight volumes in the Southern Vampire mystery series with a ninth coming out this month. I’ve gone through three so far and am about to start on the fourth.

True Blood tie-in book in Sweden: Död tills mörkret faller
from Sanna, my friend in Sweden ( I've already done an interview with her for the next Sookie International fan show!!)
Hi Dallas,
Thank you for the conversation last Saturday, great fun! I listened to your show last week and it was really interesting to hear your interviews.
I thought I should give you a short update of the Swedish book translation. The first book is indeed translated to Swedish
(October-08) and has the title D“öd tills mörkret faller”. I haven’t read it myself, and unfortunately, after reading some of the fan written reviews, I am not planning to either. Basically they say that the translation sucks compared to the original. :D
I am attaching a picture of the front cover and two photos I took in a regular bookstore and a photo of the English books you can see a little note saying: “Sara rekommenderar” meaning “Sara recommends”. :)
Ps. I couldn’t find anything to change on your blog. It is great as it is. :)
Best wishes
Sanna

Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris
The Chick Manifesto write a review of 'Dead until Dark'. Yes, there still are people trying to decide whether to read the Sookie books.
Sookie Stackhouse was born with a peculiar disability: she can read minds. Her family never talks about it and everyone in town knows there's something strange about her. When she meets the handsome Bill Compton she's thrilled to finally be able to let her guard down around someone, as his is the only mind she can't hear. One slight problem, however: Bill is a vampire, who, thanks to the advent of synthetic blood, has finally been able to "come out of the coffin" along with the rest of his kind. Soon after his arrival in her small Louisiana town (he's Bon Temps' first vampire) several mysterious and incredibly violent murders start happening. As Sookie and Bill begin to fall in love, Bill is accused of committing the murders and Sookie is dragged into the affairs of some seriously scary vampires who aren't quite as adept at mainstreaming (i.e. not drinking human blood) as Bill. This is the first book in the Southern Vampire series.
If this book sounds familiar to you it's probably because the series is the basis for the HBO series True Blood, which will start its second season in mid June.

Dead Until Dark Cover ...what we learned
So this is what we got from the Dead until Dark cover from Sucker !
The cape is about Bill´s and Sookie´s relationship and also how protective he is about her.
And because they are flying I think it means that he rescues her from her boring life.
It´s night time for obvious reasons...vampires in CH universe can´t walk around in day time.
The light under the couple is about how Sookie brings light to Bill´s life, sunshine.
Would the fire be for the vamps in Monroe? If it is I think that represents the hatred the community feels about vampires.
Anything she missed ?
Is that Gran's dark house at right , or maybe Bill's ?
He's looking at her and she's looking ahead with eyes closed or squinting ? meaning ?
Is the round light the full moon reflection ? and is it foreshadowing shifters and weres ?

Keep Bella and Give Me Sookie!
thanks to the blog Dish on Hiatus
“Oh, but you have many other very juicy arteries. There’s one in the groin that’s a particular favorite of mine.” - Bill
I am not a romantic, nor am I big into love…but I’ve fallen head over heels in love…with a TV show!
Ok, ok, dramatic, I know, but this show is fan-freaking-tastic! I have had people raving to me about it for a while; my good friend Chrystal in particular, but I wanted to read the books first! (mild OCD rule of
mine) Well, I should know by now to trust her advice! I had a small pile of books on my To-Be-Read list that received attention before the Sookie Stackhouse series, but last week I finally dove in. They are great! I recommend them to everyone. I thought
I liked Twilight, but the Sookie series is far better! Where Twilight had me remembering what it was like to have a junior high crush, Dead Until Dark ( Sookie book #1) had me wondering what it would really be like to have sex with a vampire (also known as “being a fangbanger”). So, yeah… a little different.
Here is the short & sweet synopsis: The setting is a back-woods, small town in deep South Louisiana. Vampires and people have been co-existing for the past two years. Some people are nervous around them, some are intrigued, and others just want to sell their blood (V, the hottest new drug on the market); the vampires are still trying to get equal rights and/or “mainstream” with the humans by sustaining on synthetic blood called True Blood to avoid having to feed on people…at least some of them do. Sookie is a telepathic cocktail waitress that comes across her first vampire, Bill, and falls in love.
After I flew through the first two Sookie books, I felt comfortable diving into Season 1 of True Blood without getting spoilers for the book. Well, well, well…I’m glad I did! I’ve only watch the first three episodes so far and am happy to discover that knowing the plot from the book doesn’t take ANYTHING away from the show. This is rarely the case with watching movies immediately after reading the book in my experience. The True Blood casting was great and the characters fit the image I had in my head quite well; at least nearly all of them did. (Jason could be hotter and Sookie’s boobs are supposed to be bigger, but Bill has really mastered the scary, sexy thing, while still being sweet somehow).
I’m so excited there are seven more books to read and many more episodes to watch. True Blood gives you everything! You’ve got the sexy/scary/cool vampires, mystery, a bit of romance, suspense, racy sex scenes, and to top it all off…humor! Sign me up!

Review: Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris
Nice review of 'Dead until Dark' from the Bizarre Library blog
Vampires exist in our world in Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse books. These books are from Sookie’s point of view and are about her experiences with the supernatural. She’s an attractive blond girl in her 20’s, who has the uncanny ability to read people’s thoughts. She works as a server in a bar called “Merlotte’s”, named after the owner and Sookie’s boss/friend Sam Merlotte. She lives in a simple town with simple people until “Vampire Bill” moves in. Sookie is ecstatic, and loves the fact the town has their first vampire, and not only that, she can’t read his thoughts. Being around him is a haven, but sadly there are people who are still not use to vampires, and people start dying.
This is what urban fantasy should be about. It’s a good mix of horror, action, mystery, and romance. I first read this book back when Vicki Nelson, Diane Tregarde, and early Anita Blake were the closest thing you could get to “kick-ass, urban fantasy-heroine” in a supernatural world. I wasn’t much for Anne Rice, but Harris made us see Louisiana in a different form and how it would be like if vampires did truly live in our world.
I would actually think this book were a mystery with supernatural tones to it, but the paranormal is so overpowering that the mystery does take a back seat in this book. Harris knows how to write the right amount of humor and doesn’t make Sookie an over-the-top powerful kick-ass chick. Sookie is a very down-to-earth relatable character. Harris gave Sookie such personality (she’s so naïve yet strong) that you can’t help but empathize with her.

Review of : Dead Until Dark
Posted by Amy at Outside A Dog
I felt like some sort of bandwagon-jumper or groupie or something when I requested it from the library, but Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris was pretty good. I figured it would be, though, after my boss told me he polished off the first six books over a three-day weekend. So after waiting at least a couple of months for a copy to make its way to me via interlibrary loan, I did the same thing as my boss: I polished it off.
The main character, Sookie Stackhouse, works as a waitress in a bar in northern Louisiana. Her life gets upended when she meets and falls for Bill, who happens to be a vampire. See, in Sookie's Louisiana, vampires have attained legal citizen status - they claim to be the victims of a virus that makes them pale and allergic to silver, garlic, and sunlight. The thing is, though, that young women have been getting killed and Bill and a couple of other vampires, along with Sookie's brother, Jason, are considered suspects.
So Sookie does her best to try and clear both her brother and Bill of suspicion, using - wait for it - her telepathic abilities. Everything is very nicely done, though, and you don't need to suspend much more belief than you normally would while reading any other vampire-type story.
As I mentioned, I really enjoyed this book - Charlaine Harris has found just the right balance of humor, romance and mystery, all with that paranormal-type twist. It's not as heavy and dark as Anne Rice can be, and it's certainly not as fluffy as Stephanie Meyer's Twilight series. Parts of Sookie and Bill's courtship are a little adult, but there's nothing explicit. Also? I love that Sookie is such a strong female character. I can't say too much without giving away a couple of the plot twists, but let's just say she kicks ass. I'm hoping the second book in this Southern Vampire series continues in the same vein, because I've requested that one via ILL, too.
(It should be noted that I've never seen True Blood, the cable television show based on this series, so I can't comment on any similarities or
differences.)
So while I'm waiting for Living Dead in Dallas to show up at my library, I think I'll go back to Mrs. Dalloway, Les Liasons Dangereuses, and Don Quixote. provided I don't get distracted by something else in the meantime.

Beegeek reviews Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris
I love what Beegeek has to say on her blog...
I had never heard of the Southern Vampire Mysteries or the Sookie Stackhouse Novels, as they are known, before I watched the TV series True Blood. And honestly, I only watched the show because Dexter’s season ended. Anyway, after watching the show and actually enjoying it I was pleased to find out it was based on a series of novels by Charlaine Harris. And lo and behold on Christmas morning I received not one; but all seven novels in the series, starting with Dead Until Dark.
To say that I am not a fantasy or sci-fi fan is an understatement. The only thing coming close to either of those genres that I have ever had any interest in was the Harry Potter series. I don’t know why. I can’t explain it. It just doesn’t float my boat. So, needless to say, I was skeptical when it came to my newly acquired box set of vampire novels.
The series centers on Bon Temps, a small town in New Orleans and it’s inhabitants. Most notably it’s twenty-something ‘looney’ local Sookie Stackhouse. For most of her life Sookie has been something of a pariah in Bon Temps. Early on you learn that Sookie has what she calls a ‘disability’ and what everyone else regards as being something between bat shit crazy and mildly retarded. Her disability makes relationships with anyone; especially men virtually impossible. But then she meets her perfect man, Bill. All dark hair and dark eyes and fair skin. Ok, not really fair skin so much as a deathly pallor; because Bill is, in fact, dead. Bill is one of many freshly ‘out of the coffin’ vampires attempting to mainstream into everyday life throughout the world. And he has come back home to Bon Temps to live on the plantation that his family has owned for hundreds of years.
Of course, upon Bill’s arrival, the shit hits the fan in sleepy little Bon Temps. A series of unexplained murders start taking place which gets everyone’s knickers in a twist. With the obvious blame falling to Bill and his undead brethren. Although after some investigation the finger is pointing at someone even closer to Sookie’s heart than Bill. And it is with that that she strikes out to clear the names of the people she loves while trying not to get killed herself.
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I dug this book. It wasn’t the typical vampire novel. There isn’t a whole bunch of bodice ripping and damsels in distress, while the big bad vampires wreak havoc on the unsuspecting town, until the calvary of burly men with stakes ride up to save the day. Sure there is the obvious amount of supernatural fantastic material contained within it’s pages. It is a book about vampires for God’s sake. But it is also about a tough as nails southern chick willing to look a fool and buck the system to save the men that she loves. And almost more importantly it is about a minority stepping out on to the world’s stage and attempting to be accepted for what they are; not what people expect them to be. And here I thought I was just reading a book about blood suckers and red necks. Who knew the novel about vampires and a chick with a goofy name could also be a study of independence and tolerance?

Best Fantasy Book : Dead Until Dark
Thanks to Best Fantasy for this
Because the HBO series, True Blood, was so incredibly popular with my readers and since the first season is based on Dead Until Dark, Charlaine Harris’ first fantasy book in the Southern Vampire Mysteries series, I think it makes sense to review that book so you can compare it to the series.
In Dead Until Dark we’re first introduced to Sookie Stackhouse, the plucky, sometimes outspoken waitress from Bon Temps, Louisiana. We learn early on that Sookie has a gift: she can read the minds of others. Although this might sound like a cool thing to do we discover that it’s sometimes more of a curse than a blessing. Imagine being able to hear the thoughts of several people at once. It’s a gift that could turn someone mad if not properly controlled. Thus, Sookie works hard to block out the thoughts of others and only occasionally looks into someone’s mind.
Enter Bill Compton.
A few years prior, vampires came out of the closet to the world and announced their existence. Since then they’ve worked hard to convince humans that they can exist without resorting to violence. A Japanese company even developed a synthetic blood product called True Blood which “mainstreaming” vampires (those that choose to co-exist with humans) consume in order to maintain their strength. Being a small town, Bon Temps had never experienced vampires. Until now. You see, Bill Compton is a vampire.
What draws Sookie to Bill is that she can’t read his mind. Yup, when she’s around him she hears nothing but silence. To someone like Sookie this is fantastic. She can let down her mental guard and just be herself. The attraction soon leads to a more serious relationship which allows Charlaine Harris to provide social commentary on prejudice, racism, and intolerance for cultural differences.
The supporting characters in the book help flesh out the story and provide insight into the Bon Temps community: First up is Sam Merlotte, Sookie’s boss and the owner of Merlotte’s, the bar where Sookie works. Sam is a great guy who happens to have a crush on Sookie. Sam has a secret that, during the course of the book, Sookie discovers. I won’t reveal it here for those that haven’t read the book or watched True Blood. Suffice it to say, it illustrates to Sookie that her world is inhabited by more supernatural creatures than just vampires.
Sookie’s brother, Jason Stackhouse, is a fun-loving womanizer who doesn’t really spend much time with his sister. Jason’s conquests are primarily spoken of, not shown, unlike what we see in the True Blood series.
Eric Northman is Bill’s boss and the vampire owner of a bar called Fangtasis, located in Shreveport. Here’s Charlaine Harris’ description of Eric from the book:
“the vampire was handsome, in fact he was radiant. Blond and blue-eyed, tall and broad shouldered.”In Dead Until Dark, Eric asks Sookie to use her mind reading talent to determine the identity of the person that’s stealing from him at Fangtasia.
Sookie agrees and is successful in identifying the thief, but is almost killed in the process. Note: Eric is my favorite character in the series.
Other characters with more minor roles are Lafayette Reynolds, the gay, wise-cracking African American cook at Merlotte’s; Arlene Fowler, a waitress at Merlotte’s who makes unwise choices when it comes to men; Rene Lenier, Arlene’s latest boyfriend and fiance; Terry Bellefluer, another cook at Merlotte’s who’s been mentally damaged by the war; Andy Bellefluer, Terry’s cousin who’s also the local detective; and Pam, a female vampire who helps Eric run Fangtasia.
This urban fantasy book primarily focuses on Sookie and Bill’s developing relationship but the backdrop to their story involves a recent string of murders in which several local women are being brutally killed. These women have two things in common: they’re former “fangbangers” who had intimate relations with vampires and they’re former girlfriends of Jason. Because of the latter, Jason eventually moves from being a “person of interest” status to being the prime suspect. When he gets arrested Sookie takes it upon herself to prove his innocence by reading the minds of the people that frequent Merlotte’s.
During the course of the book we learn that Bill is a kind and caring individual who, unlike many other vampires, hasn’t totally lost his humanity. He and Sookie make a great couple because both of them have strong southern manners and treat one another with respect. Charlaine Harris does a great job developing the central characters in this book and therefore, Sookie and Bill’s relationship is entirely believable.
This book is well written and highly recommended by me. The dialogue has a natural flow to it, the story moves along at a steady pace, the suspense leading up to the climax (which reveals the identity of the killer) After reading a book there are several questions I ask myself when determining whether a fantasy book is worth recommending:
Character Development: are the characters and their relationships believable? Do I care about the outcome of the main characters?
World Building: can I envision the environment in which the story takes place? Even though this is a fantasy book, is the setting believable?
Pacing: are there arcs within the story that keep the book interesting?
Climax: was I surprised at the solution to the main mystery in the book? Was it suspenseful?
Overall: do I want to read more about the characters in future books?
If most of my answers are Yes the book is usually worth reading. I’m happy to report that I answered Yes to all of the questions above. Folks, I read a LOT of vampire and fantasy books; most of them never get a written review from me because their execution of many of the elements outlined above is poor. However this fantasy book excels in all areas. When I first read this book I immediately purchased the next book in the series. I’ve since purchased all of Charlaine Harris’ fantasy books and eagerly await the 9th book, Dead and Gone, which will be released in May 2009. Dead Until Dark gets two thumbs up from me.
Note: the entire first season of True Blood (based on Dead Until Dark) will be released on DVD on May 12, 2009.

So Rene's not dead in the books ?
Why no- no he isn't dead.
Of course, the whole ending in Dead until Dark is quite different that the True Blood version - in the books Rene is in the hospital and then in jail.
Bk 1
Rene, in his work clothes, was still wearing his knife on his belt. I yanked the snap open and pulled the knife from its sheath, and while he was still thinking, "I should have taken that off,"
I sank the knife into the soft flesh of his waist, angling up. And I pulled it out.He screamed, then. He staggered to his feet, twisting his upper torso sideways, trying with both hands to stanch the blood that was pouring from the wound.
I scuttered backward, getting up, trying to put distance between myself and man who was a monster just as surely as Bill was.
Rene screamed. "Aw, Jesus, woman! What you done tome? Oh, God, it hurts!"
That was rich. He was scared now, frightened of discovery, of an end to his games, of an end to his vengeance.
"Girls like you deserve to die," he snarled. "I can feel you in my head, you freak!"
"Who's the freak around here?" I hissed. "Die, you bastard."
I didn't know I had it in me. I stood by the headstone in a crouch, the bloody knife still clutched in my hand, waiting for him to charge me again.
He staggered in circles, and I watched, my face stony. I closed my mind to him, to his feeling his death crawl up behind him. I stood ready to knife him a second time when he fell to the ground. When I was sure he couldn't move, I went to Bill's house, but I didn't run. I told myself it was because I couldn't: but I'm not sure. I kept seeing I gestured to Bill to draw close. He did, his face resting on the bed next to mine. "Don't kill Rene," I
whispered. He looked cold, colder, coldest.
"I may have already done the job. He's in intensive care. But even if he lives, there's been enough murder. Let the law do it. I don't want any more witch hunts coming after you. I want us to have peace."
Bk 4
"You know who did those killings. He's in jail, unless something's happened that I don't know about. And he confessed." Catfish met my eyes, and his were very uneasy. This line of questioning had my brother's boss all twitchy. Granted, my brother was a little kinky in the sex department (though none of the women he'd kinked with seemed to mind), but the idea of him keeping a sex slave that I had to deal with when he vanished? Oh, come on!"He did confess, and he's still in jail," Andy

This is my favorite Sookie Stackhouse book- Dead in Dixie
What you've never heard of that title ? Sure you have it was published just for Science Fiction Book Club in 2003 and it combines Dead until Dark, Living Dead in Dallas and Club Dead INTO ONE book !!
It's 612 page hardback book and I just love it -- check out the cover ... yes that is Bill and Sookie and check out Bill's archangel wings of blood.
