ooopps forgot to post Mark's episode 3 review last week

Welcome to Sucker Punch, the only blog post that ranks the gaudiest moments on this week's episode of True Blood.

To introduce this week's installment, "Scratches," let me quote my favorite line:

Sarah doesn't whip out her pudding for just anybody.

Yes, that's what Reverend Steve Newlin says after his wife gives Jason Stackhouse a dish of sweetness.

There's so much to unpack there. For one thing, the quote comes right after Sarah and Steve kiss in front of Jason for a really long time. Like... long enough that somebody should light a cigarette. And then there's the fact that earlier in the day, Jason and Sarah share a kneeling prayer over their mutual past as vampire sympathizers. It's very tender, and it wins Jason a dinner invitation. He's clearly the golden boy.

But when Steve praises Sarah's "pudding," he's not just talking dessert. Like... what does it mean to be chosen by the Fellowship? Does it mean Jason's been "chosen" to hold the camera or "chosen" to wear the costume?

The sexy shenanigans would be gauche enough if the Newlins were tax collectors, but since they're religious leaders, their come-ons are delicious. And I think the Newlins know how sexual they sound. In True Blood, power always comes with devious wisdom.

I can't declare Pudding Time this week's Sucker Punch, however, because it's clear the Newlins have something crazier in store.

Meanwhile, their dynamic with Jason parallels Maryann's relationship with Tara: In both cases, powerful figures are reaching out to guilty souls, and their succor has strings. Both Tara and Jason are so hungry to belong somewhere that they overlook warning signs.

Except that Tara's waking up. It's a relief to see her notice what a Bacchanal Maryann's party has become, and Sucker Punch Honorable Mention goes to the return of the witch's pig, relaxing in its own little playhouse. My quibble with this episode, however, is that Maryann's arc is repetitive. Yes, Tara gets suspicious and the carousing intensifies, but we saw the black-eyed boogie last week in Merlotte's. We need more information about what the revelry means.

How Baby Vampires Pick Up Guys On True Blood

This week, we watched with big watery eyes as the baby vampire Jessica met a boy and batted her long eyelashes alluringly, at his pulsating jugular. True Blood recap, with spoilers, below.

True Blood tied up a few (but not many) loose ends this week, by freeing our boy Lafayette (more on Sookie and Bill's half-hearted kindness towards the bleeding prostitute later) and made Tara a bit more aware of what a tool Eggs is, guitar playing and weepy emotional talks aside.

Sookie was attacked by some horned beast and almost died — again — and Eric got his sexy back. A good episode all in all, but the best moment came from side characters Hoyt and Jessica.

'True Blood': Eric: 'Perhaps I will grow on you'; Sookie: 'I'd prefer cancer'

This week's True Blood picked up exactly where last week's left off: Sookie, Bill, and Jessica in car, squabbling. Then: Sookie leaves car, is chased by what Eric will later refer to as "this bull-man," is attacked and left with supernatually poisonous, bleeding scars on her back. That shut up Jessica for a few minutes, didn't it? ("Petulant, dangerous, afraid," Bill describes Jessica, as who among us is not?)

Loved Dr. Ludwig and her grumpy ministrations. Loved Sookie going to Fangtasia, reading Ginger's mind, and finding Lafayette. (In fact, it was good in general to have a Sookie-centric episode this week, wasn't it?)

Did not understand why Sookie now owes Eric a favor for helping save her and Lafayette. I mean, going to Dallas to hunt wayard vampires? Who does Eric think Sookie is, Buffy Summers? All suggestions/obvious reasons I'm missing in this regard are most welcome. (Seems like she should have prevailed favor-free, given the righteousness of her argument plus the back-up strength of Bill, who really should have stepped up and supported her, but was curiously, wimpily passive in this scene with Eric. What's up with that?) But, but: best exchange of the night: Eric to Sookie, "Perhaps I will grow on you." Sookie to Eric, "I'd prefer cancer."

Things just keep getting better with "Scratches," the third episode of "True Blood" season two, as a new element of villainy is added to the scenario and one that begins to play a larger role with more than just one of the series' characters.

The episode picks up shortly after the goings on at Jessica's (Deborah Ann Woll) parents' house where, if you'll remember, Bill showed up at the last possible minute at the end of the last episode, but we were left to wonder what was to come. Well, now we know and it isn't exactly a surprise, but — as you can see from the brief clip from the opening minutes to the right — there is much more in store for this episode as well as the rest of the season as Sookie (Anna Paquin) is attacked and left for dead.

So, as Bill (Stephen Moyer) and Sookie turn to Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) for help, Jessica heads home on her own, a plot point not forgotten by the writers that will bring into play one of the town's regulars not often given enough screentime, but it appears he may be getting much more in the future. Jessica is turning out to be the "Vampire 101" aspect of the show, but the writers aren't using her naivete as a vampire as a crutch as much as a story-telling device and it is working quite nicely.

Meanwhile, back at "Vampire Killer Training Camp" Jason is having nightmares and beginning to doubt himself, if only for a brief second, but his portion of this week's story is much smaller than previous episodes. However, he is around long enough to hear Steve Newlin (Michael McMillian) drop this quote on us, "You cannot love evil. You have to hate it. So hating evil is like loving good." Jason nods his head and we are once again witness to his simple mind at work. Good stuff.

Instead, attention remains on the disappearance of the vampire Godrick in Texas and just what exactly is going to be done about it and the continuing presence of Maryann in Bon Temps as she throws a massive neighborhood party and once again things get a bit out of control causing Detective Belflour to say, "Whatchu doin' here pig?"

Pam came in then, with the doctor. If I had hoped Eric meant a regular doctor, like a stethoscope and tongue depressor kind of person, I was once again doomed to disappointment. This doctor was a dwarf, who hardly had to bend over to look me in the eyes.Bill hovered, vibrating with tension, while the small woman examined my wounds. She was wearing a pair of white pants and a tunic, just like doctors at the hospital; well, just like doctors used to, before they started wearing that green color, or blue, or whatever crazy print came their way. Her face was full of her nose, and her skin was olive. Her hair was golden brown and coarse, incredibly thick and wavy. She wore it clipped fairly short. She put me in mind of a
hobbit. Maybe shewas a hobbit. My understanding of reality had taken several raps to the head in the past few months.
"What kind of doctor are you?" I asked, though it took some time for me to collect myself enough."The healing kind," she said in a surprisingly deep voice. "You have been poisoned."...
Again, a sense of movement in the room. Dr. Ludwig bent forward and began licking my back. I
shrieked.
"She's the doctor, Sookie," Bill said. "She will heal you this way."

True Blood Season 2 Possible Title Song: Ep. 3 'Scratches' - changed from 'Scratch my Back'

We had another episode title change so we have another "Dallas guesses the title" challenge.
Originally episode 3 was entitled 'Scratch my Back' and I guessed the Slim Harpo song here

But now we find that the title has changed to "Scratches " so here is my guess for that title.

Now the one thing we know for sure about True Blood is that the episode names come from the a song used in in the soundtrack of that episode and that it is somehow significant to that episode.

Episode 2.03 - Scratches, this is only my guess, I just research the various songs with the leaked title and come up with a song I think it might be.
