You all know that the use of Blogtalk became very expensive this year and because of these costs Talk Blood Radio on Sunday nights ( my 4 year old Talk Blood radio show/ podcast) almost didn't happen.
In May I put it out on the blog and wrote to a few friends of the blog and told everyone what costs I faced just to keep the show going. Many folks responded with offers of episode sponsorships, raffle prizes and donations, but weeks before the show was set to start we still hadn't raised all the money needed to fund the show.
Enter our great friend author, Becca Wilcott -you all know her from her many appearances on Talk Blood Radio, her wonderful True Blood column from the National Post ( Canada) and especially from her FANGTASTIC book , Truly, Madly, Deadly: The Unofficial True Blood Companion . Last week on True Blood … Eric: [to Russell] Be brave. We’ll die together.
And we’re back. Did you have fun over the Labour Day weekend? I went to a fair and won a rooster crow counting contest and then ate a funnel cake the size of my head.
Here we go! The Where, Why, Wuh? of the third season of True Blood, along with our hopes, predictions and wildest dreams for season 4. (Yes, that Alcide will finally get lucky.)
• Eric has always been a badass, but this time, it’s personal. As he fries in the sunlight outside Merlotte’s, handcuffed to Russell, he learns that Russell killed Eric’s entire family because he needed goats for his werewolves. In today’s currency, that’s, like, well, a whole lot more goats. To recap: Eric has been exacting revenge for 1,000 years over goats. So that viking crown was just a memento? I’m the same. After I’ve stolen my goats … GODRIC! Finally, the little dude shows up to tell Eric that all is love and forgiveness on the other side, even for goat thieves. Who knows if that’s the last we’ll see of Godric, but he looked pretty pouty when Eric told him that Godric had made him the way he was. From the start? Or from the point that he betrayed Eric by giving himself to the sun?

Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer got hitched this past weekend! Congratulations to one cute couple who rock the beach attire like no others!
Would that I could squee with the same delight over last night’s episode. And how unfortunate that it was titled “I Smell a Rat” because the online stinkin’ flingin’ had begun before the episode had even ended. Something just didn’t click. The material was all there. The revelations were huge. Everyone was having a good hair day. There was even a hunky hustler, 90210′s Michael Steger.
So, what happened? I’m just taking a hit off of Jesus’ mad intuition skills, but I think everyone was working off Sam’s hangover or in need of a nap. They don’t all have to be winners, folks. Just the same, I think we’ll shelve “I Smell a Rat” near the back with the rodenticide.
We learn that Sookie is a fairy. That in itself should have been a big deal and worthy of a flashback or moment of thoughtful contemplation on her part. But Sookie thinks it’s lame. Has she forgotten that fairies come with Go-Go Gadget Super Duber Electric Hands? She’s a walking defibrillator, for crying out loud. Not to mention, after three seasons of only metaphorically saving Bill’s life with her sweet, sweet looove, her blood appears to offer vampires a temporary sun shield of sorts. At the very least, her blood is delicious and nutritious! Also filed under Missed Opportunities, when Bill tells Sookie she’s a fairy, how hilarious would it have been if she’d replied, “What the f-ck am I?!” (See what I did there?)

On August 29, I’ll be appearing at Fan Expo on the horror panel about film and TV vampires. We’ll talk about everything from Nosferatu through to The Vampire Diaries. And when the inevitable question comes, that moment I’m asked for my opinion about the debate between sparkly vampires (Twilight) and mainstreaming vampires (True Blood), I’ll have this to say.
“Why would we seek equal rights? You are not our equals! We will eat you after we eat your children!”
And then I’ll clap my hands together and peel back in gleeful laughter as if I’ve been waiting 3000 years to tell it like it is. In short, Russell Edgington, I bow to thee. And, I hope someone’s keeping count. Because I believe that was our first spine-ripping-out, correct? That’s a new one? Here’s the thing. That scene rocked for all the obvious reasons. But it resonated because it was really freakin’ messed up. Oh, sure you say you like vampires. They cry blood and worry that your new girlfriend’s doll fetish is creepy and they moooooooourn you. (Best delivery ever, Franklin). And there are moments when I have to wonder if Denis O’Hare, who plays Russell, knows anything about vampire lore, because he hasn’t hit a typical note yet. He’s all minor, slightly off-key. As is James Frain as Franklin, come to think of it. I could be way off base. Maybe they’ve been digging vamps since they were little boys. But it’s all to say that not unlike Alan Ball, who hadn’t immersed in vampire culture when he took on True Blood, Denis O’Hare is playing straight megalomaniac. He’s reinventing crazy. Thank god for that procedural scene in which Nan Flanagan grills Eric to recap why Russell is such a threat to the American Vampire League (AVL.) Not that we’d forgotten, but one more episode and between Russell and Franklin I’m pretty sure most of us would have willingly submitted ourselves to Stockholm Syndrome if it meant we could bask another moment in their charisma and enthusiasm for their own kind.
I can’t recall the last time the True Blood Twitterverse was in such rapture. Within seconds of the ending of last night’s episode, “Night on the Sun,” #AwwSookieNowNow could have been a trending topic. Was it really all that sexy? Maybe, maybe not. But there’s nothing better than fast and furious makeup sex. And Sookie got her some of that. (Bill was just trying to keep up.)
All told, there was a lot of skin this episode. Franklin turned up in Tara’s shower fantasy. She drank his blood, so, with any hope, we’ll be seeing more of him. Even wet shoulders up, Franklin has more charisma in his left fang than most. Jason, well, he’s accustomed to showing skin, but his got busy with Crystal’s. (Is there anything sweeter than Jason in love?) Heck, we even got to see Terry in bed with Arlene, tenderly singing to their baby on the way right before he turns into an imagined Rene, the real baby daddy. Personally, I think this story line has so much potential. It’s old school Rosemary’s Baby and deserves a big pay off. But let’s talk about the sex we didn’t see. There were two missed man-on-man opportunities. And not just any men. Uber men! Three seasons in, Lafayette finally looks like he’s about to get some, and they back out of the shot? (“Where are they going? Where’d the hot guys go? Why aren’t the hot guys doing it in the frame? Where’s my hot guys?”) Sure, it wasn’t as obvious as panning away to a vibrating mantle of religious goodies, but c’mon. Is there anyone watching this show who doesn’t want to know how Lafayette is in bed??? He makes The Old Spice guy look like a junior leaguer! And while it pains me to say that the chemistry between Lafayette and Jesus is at its best with suggestive small talk, I still want the hotsie-totsie!

Every few weeks I appear as a guest on Talk Blood Radio (www.blogtalkradio.com/true-blood-in-dallas), hosted by the lovely Dallas of Loving True Blood in Dallas (www.lovingtruebloodindallas.com), one of the most prolific fan run fan sites for True Blood and The Sookie Stackhouse Novels. If you haven’t tuned in, treat yourself. It runs 9:30 pm CST after each episode airs, and Dallas’s guests include a host of professional bloggers, national columnists, and die-hard fans. It’s fast-paced, energetic, and always a blast.
All to say, that I was one of Dallas’s guests this past Sunday evening, so you can hear me wax poetic about the avalanche that was “Hitting the Ground.” What will emerge from this episode is bound to be a tightly-packed snowball gaining momentum with each of the remaining five episodes, not to mention dismembered body parts, starting with the sinewy remains of Lorena and the Magister’s head. Let’s take a moment. I adored the Magister, in part, because as a fan also of Damages and Big Love, Zeljko Ivanek is unsurpassed in his role as The Man of Code. And I hadn’t yet grown tired of remarking how great Lorena was this season. So while I wasn’t surprised by her demise, I’ll miss her deeply. (And the chance to meet her maker. Maybe if we write to Santa Ball?) Mariana Klaveno was given a lot to work with this season. Rewatching “I Got a Right to Sing the Blues,” I’m still taken by the delivery of her threat to wear Sookie’s rib cage as a hat, spinning on her heel as she walks out the door to torture Bill. Actors just don’t get to say and do those things every day. At least she went out with the fury of a chocolate fountain at a company holiday party. (Still don’t want to believe she’s gone for good. We gotta see the woman when she still had the light in her eyes, don’t we?)

The writers are really working overtime this season to show us what vampires are capable of, and to what degree Bill differs from them in deed and action. Was this a direction in which they always planned to head? Or are they cashing in all their cable chips — this episode is particularly gory — to ensure that no one ever again compares their vampires to Twilight or The Vampire Diaries? Whatever the reason, this season bares little resemblance to the previous two. Better, faster, stronger, I say.
• The contrast between Lorena’s fixation with Bill and Sookie’s genuine affection for him is, for me, one of the strongest episode arcs of the series to date. Lorena is charged with the task of killing Bill on Russell’s orders. She produces an arsenal of weapons that would make Dexter envious, and makes us wonder, if we ever did, just how vile she really is. There were at least three opportunities to flash back to Lorena’s past. Hopefully, we’ll get to see her before and at the time she was made. Bill remains the voice of reason even as she carves him to shreds. She accuses him of never embracing their nature, and we can’t help but think that she doesn’t mean all the nature of all vampires, but theirs as a couple. Bill says he wishes to be dead so he can truly be free of his disease. When Debbie and Coot come in and feed off a weakened Bill, Lorena looks on in partial horror, perhaps glimpsing the hell she used to visit upon her victims when Bill was a more agreeable progeny. In his death, she will be alone.
• I really liked Sookie this episode. A lot. For once, I didn’t mind

Wait. What’s that? Could it be? Is that Fonzie pulling on his powder blue swim trunks? “Frank, I have to jump the shark again? Mrs. C, I’ll need the big breakfast this morning!” Clearly I’m on the other side of the tank, urging Alan Ball et al to land this jump, but I think this could be the season to divide the fans from the fanatics.
I’m going to be short on the recap part of this post, because I have a follow up rant of epic proportions.
The 411:
• Bill breaks up with Sookie over the phone. Better than a sticky note, but pretty painful, just the same. His heart isn’t just dead, it’s cold. Pouring lemon juice over her gaping wound, he shares with Sookie that he’s just had the kind of sex only two vampires can have. I’m beyond grateful that she didn’t reply, “But, I can try harder!”
• Sookie returns to Lou Pine’s were bar in a rocker girl get up that lands somewhere between Joan Jett, Liza Minnelli, and Ellen Fox of The Rotten Tomatoes Show. (Hat tip to True Blood-themed paper doll creator Andy Swist for pointing that one out.) Accompanied by Alcide (who earlier in the episode wore a bathrobe the size of a picnic blanket), we meet Alcide’s ex, Debbie Pelt, about to be initiated into the V-swigging were pack. These two have a real Jack and Diane vibe. Just a couple of kids on the wrong side of the werewoad tracks. But it’s not looking good for Debbie whose pelt is a titch matted, if I can just throw that in. Alcide could do better. Hmm, wonder with whom? [Enter Goldilocks.]

#waitingsucks. Or so says the rabid Twitter True Blood fan base. With last night’s Season Three premiere, the wait ended. And it didn’t suck. Literally. There was a surprising lack of feeding. You’d almost think True Blood was a show about — gasp — relationships!
For those new to the show, True Blood is an ensemble “pulp opera” that so far has introduced us to real vampires who live in mainstream society, able to survive on a synthetic blood replacement. One such vampire is Bill Compton, who at the end of Season Two has just proposed to his girlfriend, the telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse. Sookie initially expresses hesitation — things have been pretty messed up in Bon Temps — but after some reflection in the powder room, she bounds out with an enthusiastic yes, just in time to miss seeing Bill dragged off by unidentified kidnappers.
True Blood’s 3rd season premieres this Sunday and will pick up immediately following the kidnapping of Bill Compton, played by Stephen Moyer. The show promises to amp up the narrative with a slate of new characters and complications including the introduction of werewolves and Becca Wilcott will be with you during the whole journey.
Ms. Wilcott is the author of Truly, Madly, Deadly: The Unofficial True blood Companion, a 263-paged book compiling biographies, interviews with the cast and in-depth analyses of Alan Ball’s latest cult hit.
After 8 months of slaving until 4 a.m. working on the book, Ms. Wilcott is ready to stretch her meta-analysis skills again in weekly True Blood recaps for The Ampersand.
We caught up with the Toronto-based writer to talk about the show that has garnered millions of fans and fang-bangers.
Q: What initially drew you to True Blood?
A: It truly started with Alan Ball and Six Feet Under. I remember the closing five minutes of Six Feet Under. I think it just wrecked every television viewing experience…because it was just this brilliant departure and goodbye to this big ensemble cast. That’s the sort of stuff I love.
Q: Were you a fan of the original books?
A: I didn’t know anything about Charlaine Harris. I had no idea that there was this little telepathic character out there featured in this massive best-selling series.
Books on TV posted a new interview with our friend, Becca Wilcott on her new book, Truly, Madly,Deadly: The Unofficial True Blood Companion. I recived an advanced copy of it today and it looks great and I can't wait to sink my fangs into it..
Give us a quick breakdown of True Blood, and a pitch to convince other newbies to become Truebies.
True Blood is set in sleepy, sweaty Bon Temps, Louisiana. It’s a small town where everyone knows everyone else’s business, so it’s an interesting mix of political tensions (racism and homophobia still run rampant) and a need to get along with everyone, especially when there’s only one watering hole in town, Merlotte’s Bar & Grill. Alan Ball, the series creator, has said that True Blood is about the terrors of intimacy. I think that’s spot on. Most of life is about such terror, but it’s particularly fitting for this show, one in which the main characters struggle constantly with what they share with the outside world, what they keep hidden, what secrets they’re trying to outrun, and which secrets need to be brought into the light of day. Sounds like typical, heady, Alan Ball fare (he’s the mastermind behind Six Feet Under), but the notable difference is that many of these characters inhabit extraordinary traits. In seasons 1 and 2, we become most acquainted with vampires, shifters, and our heroine Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress. Vampires feature most heavily in the first two seasons of the series. A Japanese company has manufactured a synthetic blood, which resulted in vampires “coming out of the coffin” now that their needs were being satisfied with Tru:Blood. However, while this synthetic blood nourishes, it doesn’t necessarily satisfy, and there are vampires who refuse to relinquish their true selves simply to mainstream into modern society. Like any good suspense show, there are the Good Vampires and the Bad Vampires. But, of course, it’s more complicated than that. It’s far more about working against a homogenous society that shuts out anything it deems “different” and immoral. To that end, the show has been cited as a strong example of programming that seeks to comment on “real world” problems, the parallels to homophobia and heterosexism particularly apparent. read on here
