Unusual Suspects review

Cassie at bittenbybooks.com Reviews the anthology, Unusual Suspects and we know Sookie short stories are one of my favorite topics.

Lucky by Charlaine Harris

Once again, Sookie Stackhouse has gotten herself wound up in some misadventure. This time, she and her friend Amelia Broadway have been asked by one of their town’s insurance agents to check into some break ins at his office. Little do they know what a tangled web they are about to get involved in. Spell casting, stealing luck, angry competitors and of course a vampire or two fill the pages of this great short story from Charlaine Harris.

Review of the new Sookie short story " Lucky"

The short story “Lucky” is the first story in the new anthology Usual Suspects ( just released) edited by Dana Stabenow. The short story takes place in late September ( 2005 and is either occurs right before or right after book 7 "All Together Dead") and involves Sookie Stackhouse and her friend/roommate Amelia Broadway and centers around the local insurance agent Greg Aubert .
One day greater Alpert comes to visit Sookie and Amelia to ask for help to solve a mystery involving his office recent break-ins. He’s very worried that it seems that someone has been coming into his office and looking through the files of his customers, now the interesting hing about Greg is that his mother is a witch and his office is protected by her spells so how someone is doing this is a “supe” mystery.
He doesn't know who to suspect and asks Sookie to listen in to his family and his secretary to help him find out who's been coming into his office. Greg brings in his family to Merlottes one night for dinners so that Sookie can listens in to their thoughts.
The most interesting thoughts center on Greg’s teenage daughter, Lindsay who seems to besides herself in thinking about her new boyfriend. Amelia comes in later to the bar to tell Sookie that she thinks that there's yet another mystery brewing in Bon Temp and that is that she thinks that they're is a new young vampire living in town.
She and Sookie drive over to the vampire’s home and while sitting outside his house Sookie decides to call Eric to see if Eric knows of any new vampires that had moved into Bo Temp. She calls Fangtasia and is told that Eric and Pam are out for the evening and the bartender doesn’t think that there are any vampires in Bon Temp. She reluctantly decides to break down and call Bill Compton.
Bill sounds concerned and tells her not to approach the new vampire and promises to be right over. The new vampire must've seen them sitting in the car and yanks Sookie out of the car, Amelia tries to come to her rescue with one of her spells and Bill arrives in time to subdue the new young vampire. It seems that the young vampire has only been a vampire for two months and that his maker had been staked and killed -so he is alone. He is also a refugee from Katrina and New Orleans and he is the one who is dating Greg Aubert’s daughter Lindsay
The new vampire whose name is Dustin has not checked Eric is therefore broken vampire rules. Bill takes to Eric.

Amelia tells Sookie that Bill looks familiar

Oh, I'll bet they're expecting you. Was there a tall, dark, and handsome vamp out there with you last night? He sure looked familiar."
"Bill Compton," I said. "Yes, he's lived in Louisiana for years and he's done some work for the queen."
She looked at me, her clear blue eyes surprised. "Oh, I thought he knew your cousin."
"No," I said. "Thanks for getting me up so I could start work, and thanks for being willing to help me."
She was pleased that she was leaving, because I hadn't been what she'd expected, and she wanted to think about me some and make some phone calls to sisters in the craft in the Bon Temps area. "Holly Cleary," I said. "She's the one I know best."
