Daybreakers new vampire movie

Lionsgate Films has released a new TV spot for the forthcoming much anticipated vampire film Daybreakers. Set in the year 2019,Daybreakers shows us a future where vampires rule the world and humans have been driven to near extinction. The problem with that is the dwindling blood supply created by the farming of the human race as fodder for the vampires.

The Evolution of the Vampire

From the Victoria Advocate

Over the centuries, the image of the vampire has been revamped (pun completely intended) multiple times. From mindless monster to suave, yet cold-hearted artistocrat, to today's incarnation of sympathetic, cursed hero, the evolution of the vampire typically reflects the culture of the time. But although the image of the vampire may change, one thing that doesn't is that they are constantly being resurrected (Bah-ZING!) in popular culture.

Ancient Times

Even the earliest civilizations, such as the Sumerians, had stories of vampire-like beings and blood-sucking demons, according to an article in the American Chronicle. Many of the early tales, though not all, describe vampires as soulless, and in some cases, mindless killers.

1450: The Real-Life Dracula

The historical figure that the character of Dracula is based on is Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia, or as you probably know him, Vlad the Impaler, according to Eric Nuzum, author of "The Dead Travel Fast: Stalking Vampires from Nosferatu to Count Chocula." He wasn't a vampire, nor did he drink blood, but he did murder thousands of his countrymen. His chosen last name "Dracula," a reference to a religious order founded by his father, translates to "son of the devil," according to Nuzum.

The Lure of the Vampire

From Wall Street Journal

If you step out of your house late Thursday night, you'll witness an overwhelming scene. At 12:01 a.m., movie theaters will release "New Moon," the next film in the "Twilight" series. Anxious viewers will finally discover whether mortal Bella Swan will choose Jacob's werewolf den over Edward's sparkly coffin. Clearly, creatures of the night have returned to societal consciousness.

As a testament to their adaptability, vampires are front and center on the pop-culture stage. Television shows such as "True Blood" and "The Vampire Diaries" feature titillating exchanges between fanged supermodels. Movies like "Twilight," "Let the Right One In" and "Blood: The Last Vampire" explore vampirism through teenage, independent and gore-tinted lenses,

Of course we love vampires. We’re only human

from Times Online

Dracula has moved on. Today’s fang-baring bloodsucker is more a Jane Austen romantic hero than a Hammer horror villain

The release tomorrow of New Moon, the second film in the phenomenally successful Twilight saga, confirms that 2009 has truly been the year of the vampire. The non-beating heart of Edward Cullen, Twilight’s beautiful vampire hero, has set pulses racing all over the world. At the London premiere last week, Robert Pattinson, who plays Edward, was greeted by thousands of girls screaming not because they fear that they’ll die if he bites them, but because they know they’ll die if he doesn’t.

Cold-blooded creatures have never been so hot.New Moon comes at the end of a long list of vampire films that have filled the cinemas this year. Thirst, a Korean tale of a vampire priest, won the Jury Prize at Cannes. Let the Right One In, the Swedish cult hit about a vampire girl and the boy who lives next door, was released to critical raves in April. It’s now being remade in the US.

True Blood Speakers needed

True Blood and the West?

Speaking of the Undead in the West, the CFP below for HBO’s True Blood series reminded me that there were western elements in the most recent season of the series. Although, with its primary Louisiana setting, True Blood seems mostly to draw on southern regionalism, vampire Bill and human (or mostly human) Sookie made a side trip to Texas as part of season two’s story arc, where they had an encounter with anti-vampire religious militants, and there were quite a few vampires here and there displaying a distinct cowboy aesthetic in their dress sense. That foray into western space might be interesting to examine in terms of western genre as well.

The Call For Papers:

True Blood ( PCA/ACA, 3/31 – 4/3, Submission Deadline: 12/15)

The Vampire in Literature, Culture and Film area of the Popular Culture Association is seeking papers for the Joint National Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association Conference to be held Wednesday, March 31st to Saturday, April 3rd, 2010 in St. Louis.

Papers which cover any aspect of the HBO True Blood series or the Charlaine Harris Sookie Stackhouse books are sought for presentation. Papers should be limited to a reading time of 15-20 minutes (3 person panels allow for 20 minute papers while 4 person panels allow for 15 minute papers; panels will be formed no later than January 2010 in order to provide panelists ample time to adjust their presentation time).

If you want to form your own panel of 3 or 4 presenters unified around a particular theme or work, please send panel proposals along with brief abstracts of each paper, each paper’s title, and contact information for each presenter in addition to designating one presenter as the Panel Chair. Discussion panels of 4-6 participants each are also encouraged.

All presenters must be (or become) members of the PCA or ACA and must register for the conference. Membership and registration information will be sent upon presentation acceptance. Please note that paper acceptance obligates participants to present the paper at the conference. Additionally, as per PCA/ACA guidelines, multiple submissions to different areas are not allowed (although you can present a paper and participate as a round-table speaker), and you must be present at the conference to read your own paper.

To have your proposal considered for presentation, please send a 250-350 word abstract by December 15, 2009, complete with your name, affiliation, and contact information to either:
