Interview with Becca Wilcott author of Truly, Madly,Deadly: The Unofficial True Blood Companion
Books on TV posted a new interview with our friend, Becca Wilcott on her new book, Truly, Madly,Deadly: The Unofficial True Blood Companion. I recived an advanced copy of it today and it looks great and I can't wait to sink my fangs into it..
Becca Wilcott, author of Truly, Madly, Deadly: The Unofficial True Blood Companion
Give us a quick breakdown of True Blood, and a pitch to convince other newbies to become Truebies.
True Blood is set in sleepy, sweaty Bon Temps, Louisiana. It’s a small town where everyone knows everyone else’s business, so it’s an interesting mix of political tensions (racism and homophobia still run rampant) and a need to get along with everyone, especially when there’s only one watering hole in town, Merlotte’s Bar & Grill.Alan Ball, the series creator, has said that True Blood is about the terrors of intimacy. I think that’s spot on. Most of life is about such terror, but it’s particularly fitting for this show, one in which the main characters struggle constantly with what they share with the outside world, what they keep hidden, what secrets they’re trying to outrun, and which secrets need to be brought into the light of day. Sounds like typical, heady, Alan Ball fare (he’s the mastermind behind Six Feet Under), but the notable difference is that many of these characters inhabit extraordinary traits. In seasons 1 and 2, we become most acquainted with vampires, shifters, and our heroine Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress.
Vampires feature most heavily in the first two seasons of the series. A Japanese company has manufactured a synthetic blood, which resulted in vampires “coming out of the coffin” now that their needs were being satisfied with Tru:Blood. However, while this synthetic blood nourishes, it doesn’t necessarily satisfy, and there are vampires who refuse to relinquish their true selves simply to mainstream into modern society. Like any good suspense show, there are the Good Vampires and the Bad Vampires. But, of course, it’s more complicated than that. It’s far more about working against a homogenous society that shuts out anything it deems “different” and immoral. To that end, the show has been cited as a strong example of programming that seeks to comment on “real world” problems, the parallels to homophobia and heterosexism particularly apparent.

More adventures in Dallas's iPad- I did show Charlaine her own web page and the iBook version of "Dead in the Family" on my iPad the other night at dinner.
She thought it was very cool and said it was " a great new toy."

Evan Lysacek: Dancing With Twilight and True Blood!
Hello True Blood casting, get this Olympian into at least a walk on !
What's this I hear about the dance last night being inspired by Twilight?
There were some props involved, but our dress rehearsal was such a disaster. I tried to glue fangs on my teeth but they fell off. They drew a widow's peak on my forehead, but then I started sweating and had black dripping down my face. I was supposed to pull the cape off of Anna's dress and instead I pulled her real skirt. So we eliminated the fangs and the widow's peak and the Dracula-type thing and made it a little more subtle. Some people I think got it and got that I was biting her on the neck. Tonight we're doing the repeat dance, so I might try [the fangs] again. I'm thinking about it.
So, are you a Twilight fan? Have you seen the movie?
Yeah and I really enjoyed it, but actually I love True Blood. I'm obsessed with True Blood. I think [Anna] was coming at it from more of a Twilight angle and I was coming at it from True Blood. I travel with the True Blood DVDs and I get so hooked. Last year I was doing a show and missed my number because I was watching backstage. They announced me and I wasn't there! I was too enthralled with the show.

Where does Charlaine Harris get her inspiration ?
A question I'm asked over and over (and over), and my least favorite question, is this:
"Where do you get your inspiration?"
Frankly, I hate the question because I don't understand it. If inspiration were obtainable by artificial means, as the question implies, everyone would have it. The most pertinent definition in my Webster's is "a sudden creative idea or act."
How can I explain where my ideas come from? Ideas are the product of a witch's brew of circumstances: watching the news, long thought, another book, the act of washing dishes, a single gesture in a play . . . all of these can combine to spark a train of thought that leads to something new, something I think is worth pursuing. Connections occur in my head, and all of a sudden something is happening in my book that I think is worthy of being recorded, important enough in its revelation of character or plot.
Some days it really IS like a lightbulb going on over my head -- on very good days. Other days, I sit and stare and think about my cuticles.

ABC hits the TWILIGHT and TRUE BLOOD crowd with THE GATES
There was a teaser floating around earlier today for a new ABC series called THE GATES. Since it didn't really show ANYTHING aside from UNDERWORLD's Rhona Mitra in fangs, I didn't post it. Now there's a new, extended HD promo for the series that popped up tonight on ABC's YouTube page. THE GATES is premiering Sunday June, 20th as a part of ABC's Summer Lineup. With the lucky 13 episode order in place, will THE GATES stay open for long, or will this suffer the fate of HAPPY TOWN and EASTWICK? There looks to be some sexy Vampire/Werwolf action, so we're definitely hitting the TWILIGHT SAGA/TRUE BLOOD/VAMPIRE DIARIES realm, but the setting is more "Wysteria Lane." Check out the synopsis and trailer below.

“Blood Oath,” a political thriller with a vampire twist, coming to a theater near you
Vampires. They’re all the bloody rage right now. Heck, I’d go far as to say that vampires are the new zombies. So, with that said, Hollywood is sucking dry any source material they can for “new” ideas involving those sexy creatures of the night.
Such is the case with Christopher Farnsworth’s Blood Oath, an action adventure novel with a vampire spin that centers around an undead, blood-sucking Secret Service agent. Described as a “mix of political techno thrills and supernatural action,” the book tells of a vampire named Nathaniel Cade who is taken hostage by the U.S. Army during the Civil War, and subsequently forced to protect the presidency (which he does for what has been around 150 years). Oath, which hits bookshelves Tuesday, revolves around Cade being hung up in a plot involving a new form of biological weapon connected to a White House conspiracy.
Producer Lucas Foster (LAW ABIDING CITIZEN, MR. & MRS. SMITH, EQUILIBRIUM), under his Warp Films hood, optioned the right to Oath, as well as Farnsworth’s future follow-up, Black Site. Scripts for both adaptations are to be written concurrently with a still-unnamed screenwriter working alongside Farnsworth, who will help shape the screenplays. Foster said that he hopes to get OATH in production by next year.
So, a vampiric Jack Bauer, eh? What do you think?

Twilight To Invade True Blood's Territory?!
Sources are speculating that unlike the first three Twilight films, Breaking Dawn won't be shot in the Pacific Northwest, but rather in the bayous of Louisiana.
Sound familiar, Sookie Stackhouse?
A production notice was uncovered by sources when it was filed last week at the Louisiana Secretary of State's office. An agent for Summit Entertainment allegedly established a new corporate entity called "TSBD LOUISIANA, L.L.C.," which could very well stand for Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.

Vamps call it Josephine's, the weres call it Club Dead and in True Blood it's known as Lou Pine's Bar
I was most interested in the last trailer photos of Club Dead ...
Lou Pine's =lupines
–adjective
1.pertaining to or resembling the wolf.
2.related to the wolf.
3.savage; ravenous; predatory.
Here is the description we get from the book:
I caught a glimpse of a street sign reading "Amite" as we pulled up to an awning that stretched over a deserted length of sidewalk in the outskirts of downtown Jackson. The area directly under the awning was lit with a brilliant and cold light. Somehow that length of sidewalk seemed creepily ominous, especially since the rest of the street was dark... "The vamp that owns it calls it Josephine's," he said, just as quietly. "But Weres call it Club Dead." I thought about laughing, but the inner door opened just then. The doorman was a goblin.

Sookie fans like it when Sookie gets to have sex !
True Blood author Charlaine Harris: Readers like it when Sookie gets to have sex
Author Charlaine Harris, 58, writes the Sookie Stackhouse vampire mystery books that have been turned into hit TV series True Blood. The books detail the antics of telepathic waitress Sookie, her vampire boyfriend Bill and their various supernatural pals.
How did you start writing these books?
I wrote conventional mysteries for many years. I’d written two mystery series which had done fairly well but hadn’t got me to where I wanted to be. I had a thinking session and decided to write about a woman who was dating vampires. I hoped a mystery with supernatural elements and romance would appeal to a broader readership than just mystery readers.
Was it a struggle selling it?
That was the hardest part. Writing the book was a joy, selling it was very difficult. It took my agent two years. People didn’t know where to place it – it didn’t quite fit into romance, mystery or science fiction.
Did you think of abandoning the idea?
No, I had a taste of what I wanted to do. The change of scenario was invigorating. With mysteries you have to have a dead body, clues and a denouement, and I found the conventions restrictive.
What do the readers expect from your books?
They want vampires, of course, and don’t mind seeing werewolves and fairies too. The younger readers like it when Sookie gets to have sex but that doesn’t happen in every book.
You wouldn’t know that from the TV show.
No, you wouldn’t. That’s where Alan Ball [True Blood’s producer] and I have a different approach.
What are the other differences between the books and the TV show?
There are extra characters on the show. We had to bring the other characters forward because Sookie can’t be on the screen all the time. Alan’s very talented. I had several offers to adapt the books and feel I went with the right person.
