Sookie Stackhouse books: If Edward Cullen could dream, he’d dream of being Eric Northman
If Edward Cullen could dream, he’d dream of being Eric Northman. Or so they say on the Internet.
Started reading Charlaine Harris’ Southern Vampire books in July because I needed some light reading for the cottage. Up to #7 now, and I’m hooked. Hooked on the parallel world Harris has created, the pantheon of supernatural creatures, the uneasy interface between our world and the world of the “supes” and Sookie Stackhouse herself – one of the most winning fictional heroines to come along since Eliza Bennett. And like any other lover of books, it’s not enough for me to enjoy the books: I want to share them with others. So what better time than Hallowe’en month for me to tell you a bit about the story of Sookie Stackhouse and the Confederate soldier Bill Compton, the weretiger Quinn, and yes, the 1,000 year old Viking warrior Eric Northman.
Sookie works as a waitress at a bar in a small town in northern Louisiana, called Bon Temps. She avoids people – especially men – because of her gift – or curse: she can read minds. Turns out telepathy isn’t an unmixed blessing when you always know what people want from you. Into Sookie’s world comes Bill Compton. Bill’s a vampire. In Sookie’s world the vampires outed themselves to the human world about six years ago. This followed the Japanese discovery of a synthetic blood substitute, True Blood, which means that vampires no longer have to prey on humans to survive. Nowadays they can pick up a case of True Blood at the local Wal-Mart, pop a bottle of O positive in the microwave, and they’re set. So vampires walk amongst us now: they own businesses, they pay taxes, they go to bars, they’ve joined the police force. Bill is the first vampire Sookie’s ever met, and to her delight she realizes that she can’t read his mind. She falls for him hard, starts meeting other vampires, and eventually they start making love and are a couple. Most stories would end there. Sookie’s story has barely started.
True Love for True Blood Stud and Kate Bosworth?
Is True Blood bad-boy vampire Alexander Skarsgard really sinking his teeth into Kate Bosworth?
Judging by the photos of the two making eyes at each other and then hopping into a car at Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood on Saturday night, it's obvious Skarsgard, 33, finds Bosworth, 26, delicious. The two are slated to star together in the remake of Sam Peckinpah's classic thriller Straw Dogs.
Sure, maybe it was just because she'd presented him with the best villain award at Spike TV's Scream Awards earlier in the night, but reports say the two were holding hands and flirting heavily after the presentation. Still, until we see bite marks on someone's neck, this potential coupling will have to remain bloodless and in the "unconfirmed" column. Which naturally sucks.

Alexander Skarsgård, talking to a superskinny (no surprise there) Kate Bosworth for a long-ass time in the green room. The blonds must have more than peroxide and perfect bods in common, since they were chitchatting closely for quite a while. Should a no-show Evan Rachel Wood be jealous? Or is Skarswood done before they barely began? We don't need to tell you what we're crossing our fingers for.

The Best Horror Actor and Actress awards went to real life engaged couple Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin, who was wearing a gorgeous purple Marc Jacobs dress Stephen was walking with a cane and told us "I tore my meniscus; I didn't know what that word was until about two weeks ago." How did he hurt himself? The True Blood star told RadarOnline.com "Rolling around with my kids. I'd like to say it was some kind of thrusting, sexy injury, but it really isn't!"

The scream awards will air Tuesday Oct 27th
Science fiction superfans Saturday evening crowned Megan Fox the queen of their film genre, honoring the hottie actress along with a group of her sci-fi peers at Spike TV's "Scream 2009" festival for their contributions to the zombie-loving world of sci-fi.
"Twilight" also won two top honors at the ceremony, picking up awards for best fantasy film and breakout performance for star Taylor Lautner. Lautner also presented at the Spike TV show a reel of world-premiere footage of the newest "Twilight" installment, "New Moon."
The star-studded ceremony was attended by a host of film, TV and music celebrities including Jessica Alba, Kate Bosworth, Harrison Ford, Justin Long and Christina Ricci, all of whom presented awards at the show.

Alexander Skarsgard wins Best Villain, presented by Straw Dogs co-star, Kate Bosworth.

Recently, I scored a major victory in my “Mom, I don’t like to read” quest. I’d signed up for the Sookie Stackhouse challenge, and in anticipation of fulfilling the challenge requirements, I’d bought the boxed set of the first seven Sookie novels.
At the time, my son had just discovered the “True Blood” television series; I told him it was based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels, and waved the boxed set under his nose.
Sure enough, about two weeks later, he ambled into my office and nonchalantly asked where the Sookie books were.
Without hesitation, I gave him the entire set.
He took off with them, and read them all in a week. Yes, a week!
After he finished the first book, I asked him, “So, how do the books compare to the television series?”
He gave a shrug. “The television shows are better.”
When he’d finished the boxed set, I asked him again how the books compared to the television series.
“They’re different. But they’re both good.” Pause. “So, did you say there are some more books in the series? Are you planning to get them soon?”
“Admit it! You like to read, don’t you?”
“No, not really.”
“Do you want those last three books in the series or what?” (I am not adverse to certain levels of bribery, if you really want to know.)
“MOM! That’s not fair!”

The must-see series is True Blood (Channel 4 Wednesday), produced by Alan Ball (the man behind Six Feet Under) for HBO and adapted from Charlaine Harris’s vampire stories. It continues the HBO tradition of a genre that mixes genres: it’s part-vampire movie, part-sitcom based round waitresses in a Louisiana bar, part-mystery, part-soft(ish) porn, and overall a brilliant comic creation.
Anna PaquinIn this world, vampires have just become a recognised minority following the passing of the Vampire Rights Amendment and the provision of synthetic blood supplies so that they need no longer prey on humans. Liberals, such as waitress-heroine Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin, pictured), approve: confronted with evidence that vampires have not abandoned their bloodsucking ways, she says “I happen to think that to judge people on the actions of a few is wrong!”
She falls in love with a handsome vampire and offers him her (rare) virginity; he, falling for her, restrains his desire to sink his fangs into her and keeps his literally bloodthirsty colleagues, who come to his ruined plantation for blood and sex romps, away from her. Around them, young men and women couple, scratch a living and bemoan the boredom of small-town society. Sookie’s best friend, Tara, who is black, mocks whites for their supposed racism or their obvious stupidity, playing with affirmative action pieties for her own advantage and amusement.
It’s a monstrously fine and funny piece of work, because it so cleverly comments on contemporary anxieties, fads and follies while telling a story at the same time. And it is witty too: a tabloid headline on a counter proclaims “Angelina to adopt a vampire baby”. Contemporary American society has been imagined anew, with all its crazinesses and its grandeurs. It’s how comedy should be.

True Blood Season 3: Sookie's kind of fairies are fierce, powerful and primal creatures
True Blood creator, Alan Ball, has revealed that several guest stars will return for the show’s third season, including Evan Rachel Wood as vampire Queen of Louisiana.
“The Queen is coming back,” Ball told The TV Guide. “Godric is coming back for an appearance, a flashback. There’s some new vampires in town, there are some werewolves. We do have a lot of werewolves coming in, male and female, but we haven’t started casting for the show yet.The new season will also explore Sookie’s identity and powers more deeply.
“Sookie still doesn’t know exactly what she is. She will get closer to figuring out why she has these random powers that show up when they do.
“She is definitely part of a different race. In terms of fairies, like perky fairies with wings, like Tinkerbell, no, they’re not like that. If it is fairies, they’re fierce. They’re not pretty, soft, glamorous, gossamery things. They’re really, really, really powerful and primal creatures.”
