Today's vampire – a needy, neurotic wimp
Not any more, according to the bestselling writer, Neil Gaiman. They're all a little toothless these days, he says, and nothing like the true-blue bloodsuckers of old.
Vampires are now over-populating popular culture to the point where they are just not scary, Mr Gaiman said as he picked up the CILIP Carnegie medal for his gothic children's story The Graveyard Book, about an orphan raised by ghosts.
Speaking to The Independent, he likened the glut of vampires in books, films and television shows – from the Twilight series to the growth of paranormal romance fiction – to a cockroach infestation. He said he had originally wanted to create a vampire character for his next book but had later decided against it.

The world needs all the Sookies it can get.

The world DOES need all the Sookies it can get. Why? She’s loyal. Sometimes to a fault. She takes the high road — no matter what comes at her, she does what’s right. The people she loves in her life come first and she’ll fight to the death for them, if that’s what’s required. She stands for courage and most of all, she stands for someone who always comes through in the end. You want a Sookie in your life.
But the time has come for me to stop being Sookie.
This is my last blogpost as @SookieBonTemps. Being @SookieBonTemps has definitely been a wild ride. From writing 140-character tweets on my life in fictional Bon Temps to dabbling roleplay to developing programs like True Blood on Twitter Thursday, Bites for Blood for the American Red Cross, it’s been a fantastic run and I couldn’t have done it without all of you.
I’d like to say thank you to the lovely characters who’ve been with me since the beginning, @LafayetteTB, @EricNorthman, @VampireBill, @MerlottesBar, @JessicaHamby, @HoytFortenberry, and all of the lovely characters and non-characters who joined the fray soon after. Some of you I’ve had the pleasure of meeting in real life, others of you I plan to meet real soon.
Thanks to @TrueBloodDallas, who found this little lost lamb way back in December 2008 when there was no Bon Temps Twitterverse. You are a wonderful partner in crime, and we do the best damn True Blood radio show out there. Not that I’m biased.
Thank you to @HBO for embracing the True Blood fandom.

True Blood set secrets from EW
The King of Mississippi’s Mansion: Ingerslev and her art director took a little side trip to Natchez, Mississippi last year, and found Longwood, a National Historic Landmark and the largest remaining octagonal home in the U.S., which she was told had never been filmed before for TV or features. “The interior was never completed. After the Civil War, they walked away from it,” she says. “But we just needed it for the exterior, because there’s nothing like it in the whole world. So we convinced our producers, begged and begged, and they let us go down there and shoot it.” As for the interiors, they were created from scratch after studying the furniture, chandeliers, and wallpapers in plantation homes. “The wallpaper in the King’s dining room is completely Mississippi wallpaper,” she says. “It’s got the river, it’s got Spanish moss and alligators. It’s really amazing that we found that in a wallpaper book.”
When it came time to acquire Bill’s much-storied bed, Ingerslev admits she felt some pressure to find one that would live up to those expectations. ”That kind of a bed is probably $20-, $30-, $40-, $50,000. Our producers wouldn’t have liked that,” she says. They settled on a rental from Warner Bros., which was probably used in a lot of old studio films. Another decision that required some thought: How to decorate the table. “At first, we were like, ‘Let’s get all this great silver,’ and then we realized we couldn’t use silverware in there because vampires can’t touch silver. So we ended up going with a gold flatware. We used a lot of glass displays and crystal. Waterford was kind enough to loan us some pieces because apparently, they’re fans of the show.”
Lou Pine’s: The wolf-related signage in the bar — e.g. Howl and Red Wolf beer — is an obvious homage to what lies beneath in its werewolf patrons, but for a more subtle clue, check out the table lights. When they couldn’t find any they liked, the prop master got an idea: “They look like normal lights, but they’re actually silver doggie bowls and cheap plastic domes,” Ingerslev said

This list is aimed at a hypothetical viewer -- maybe young, maybe not -- who became immersed in vampire lore after having seen "Twilight," but who has yet to really sink his or her fangs into the genre's rich cinematic legacy, and who might be surprised to discover how elastic and surprising it can be. (In truth, it's probably aimed at my adolescent daughter, whose favorite movies include "The Graduate," "Election" and "Jaws" but fell asleep during "The Godfather" because the plot was too hard to follow.)

Famed author and Tunica native–Charlaine Harris joins county Sons, Daughters
New York Times best-selling author–and Tunica native–Charlaine Harris will be inducted into the Tunica Museum’s “Sons and Daughters of Tunica County” permanent exhibit on Sunday, July 11, in conjunction with a book signing and reading by Harris at the museum from 2-5 p.m. that day.
“The greatness of Tunica lies in her people,” commented museum director Dick Taylor. “There is something about this community that fosters in her people the desire to achieve.
