Our Top Five Gripes About True Blood from NY Magazine

From NY Magazine

We will be the first to admit that the glories of HBO's True Blood are many; after we worked our way through the first few bumpy episodes of the show's debut season, we quickly became addicted to the many charms of Alan Ball's soapy dramedy. But even though our allegiance is strong, we can't help but admit that there are a few things about the program that rankle us on a near weekly basis. As fans, we do our best to push these concerns to the side, but after nineteen episodes, we couldn't hold them in any longer.

1. Bill deserves a hotter maker. The women on True Blood are a mixed bag. The majority fall just short of knockout — like the B versions of the A-list. But the most egregious is Mariana Klaveno, who plays Lorena, the vampire who made Bill. Surely in all of Hollywood there was a more seductive actress to play a woman who says, among other things: "People would die to be with me for one night." Where are the female equivalents of Bill and Eric on this show?

I know they will want to here your opinions on their choices ? #4 is Hoyt and Jessica , really?

#1: I think all of the women on the show are beautiful, I don't know what the writers of this article or review expect--playboy models? I especially find their criticism of the actress playing Lorena to be over the top if not a bit out of line. Mariana Klaveno is lovely and I'm sure real life men would lay down their lives to spend a night with her.

#4: First of all, Jessica is 17 and not 16. The legal age of conesent in some state is 17 but that issue really needs to be tossed aside because she's dead anyway. If we're going to nitpick then should we also be concerned about state laws regarding necrophilia?

#5: I can't stand Bill's make up, either. It looks way too chalky.

I am amazed that someone would actually post some of those comments.

Bill needs “hotter” maker. The women are B versions of A list women? All the actresses on the show are extremely attractive. Sookie, Pam, Jessica, Maryann and Lorena are all played by very attractive women. The magic of TV can make them “Hotter” if the Alan Ball decides it is appropriate. Maybe Ball is not looking for sex pots in every shot. Maybe he wants Lorena to play the “bad guy” and look sinister. What a concept!
Special effects suck. OK, I will give you that. This is a series which is shot fast and on a limited budget and not a big budget motion picture. This show is based upon acting and not special effects.
Someone from NEW YORK magazine wants to criticize the accuracy of the rural N. LA southern accents. I must ignore that comment.
Jessica and Holt relationship is creepy because he is 28 and she is a 17 year old VAMPIRE. Who was stopped from killing her father and drinking his blood. But she needs statutory rape laws to protect her. Actually, who needs protecting?
Bill is chalky white and needs a tan???? Excuse me but he can not ever see the sun soooo how is he suppose to get a tan? Also vampires are the walking dead so they are suppose to look healthy?

My top five gripes:
1. AP is not a good Sookie. She is not pretty enough, she has a big gap in her teeth (Sookie doesn't), she has blond (bleached) hair with black eyebrows and her boobs are not "generous", which Sookie's are supposed to be.
2. The vampires have incisors for fangs, not canines. That's just lame. And the way they snap into place is even more lame.
3. The entire Maryann storyline.
4. They have made Sookie into a strident, self-appointed critic of everything and everyone. Why does she scream at people. That's just rude.
5. They need lots more of Eric. AS is so good in the role and just blazingly hot.

I like the Jessica/Hoyt romance just fine. And as Heather noted, she is 17, not 16. And Hoyt is mentally and emotionally about 15. Maybe that's the creepy part, though it really doesn't seem creepy to me.

Bill's hair and makeup have got to go. Are they purposely trying to make him look bad...And what's with those bangs. He looked great in season one...

Gee, Anonymous, I thought this was a place where we shared our opinions about the SHOW, not other people. Remember this is America. And I never said she could not act. I said they had her acting in a way that was strident. As for thinking she comes across as a sweet Southern girl, not so much. I don't really care for sweet, but I really dislike screamers.

You are right Sharon and I apologize for not moderating that response more carefully - the ONE thing I absolutely positively will not allow is anything personal and that was waaayyy too personal.

Also it's BS to not sign in or sign your posts here - I am nice en ought not to make it mandatory but everyone knows they should.

I really dont want to hear gripes - here you need to post them to the NY Mag comment section.

This blog isn't the place to complain about True Blood and if you have one it really has to be constructive.

But Sharon, if you are going pick a fight by saying you don't think AP is pretty enough -or busty enough you can pretty much expect someone to take you on ...

I am 100% Team Sookie and like Charlaine, I love Anna's portrayal of her.

I'm closing comments here -that's only the 3rd time I've ever had to do that - anyone else want to comment on "gripes" take it to NY Mag.
