Addicted to Twitter

From Salon Magazine

How I learned that I was powerless over micro-blogging and my life had become unmanageable

By Laurel Snyder

Aug. 15, 2009 | Last Thursday morning, I sat down at my computer with my cup of sludgy coffee, just like any other day. I checked my e-mail and glanced at the New York Times Web site. But when I opened up Twitter, expecting the usual hodgepodge of scattered thoughts and hectic questions, I found there was nothing there. Nothing at all.

It was the day of the Great Twitter Outage. But I didn't know that yet. I only knew that something was terribly wrong.

Actually, it was funny, in a kind of pathetic, soul-crushing way: I stared at the blank screen, hitting refresh over and over. Waiting for everyone to come back. For my online life to resume. Finally, I accepted the truth. Twitter, my favorite unreliable news source and constant companion, was gone.

The dinosaurs didn't go completely extinct when the asteroids hit 65 million years ago. Today, every ten thousandth person in the country is a dinosaur, evolved to be human-sized, wearing sophisticated solid-light holographic disguises to maintain the facade, getting stoned off regular cooking herbs like basil, rosemary and tarragon, and living by their own shadow government's laws; any human who stumbles upon them is to be immediately executed. Two dino private investigators, velociraptor Vincent Rubio and triceratops Ernie Watson, are hired by one of Ernie's old girlfriends to find out why her younger brother committed suicide, and discover a dino cult called Voice Of Progress that wants dinokind to come out of the closet and reclaim the planet. Vampire-Con 2009 is underway in Hollywood

La Times

This is clearly the year of the vampire. But what blood type are you?

Maybe you're one of those swooning fans of "Twilight," who can't get enough of hot guys with cold hands and dreams of (literally) undying devotion. Or perhaps you like your bloodsuckers to walk more on the wild side, like the fangbangers on "True Blood" who think of the world as one big blood orgy.

Perhaps you're more bookish and have a bedside copy of "The Strain," the new novel from Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan that approaches bloodsucking as if it was a gothic procedural, a modern-day "CSI: Transylvania."

Or, best of all, maybe you're a devotee of "Let the Right One In," the magnificent Swedish film that makes "Twilight" feel almost as substantial as a Gap commercial.

You will find fans of each of those this weekend at the very-of-the-moment Vampire-Con, which is now underway in (where else?) Hollywood, where on nightclub Saturdays every fifth person looks like they sleep in a coffin. Among the fang-festivities:

The New Beverly Cinema is screening two vamp films tonight, 1971's "The Velvet Vampire" (star Celeste Yarnall will attend) and Tony Scott's 1983 classic "The Hunger."

The Music Box Theater at the Fonda on Sunday will host a daylight program (what's up with that?) with contests, panel discussions and the crowning of a new Vampirella model followed, at 8:30 p.m., by a monster mash called Vampirella's Ball. (One of the DJ's is Gary Calamar, music supervisor for "True Blood," a pal to the Hero Complex and a music master of the first order.) The party goes into the wee hours, and I suspect things by that point will be more in the "True Blood" excess mode than "The Strain" body-bag spirit, but, well, you never know. You can check out the weekend schedule or just go ahead and buy tickets right now ... after all, there's a sucker born every minute.

Blood Copy : AM I EVIL?

August 14th, 2009

Contrary to what some will tell you, becoming a vampire does not entail losing your conscience. Sometimes I wish it did.

In many ways I consider myself fortunate. I was turned only after the invention of Tru Blood. I have never needed to find a living blood source. But that doesn’t mean I haven’t been tempted, that I haven’t been drawn to the sight of an open wound, a pulsing jugular. I want to tell myself it’s not that I wish harm on anyone. For centuries, vampires were forced to take human blood in order to sustain themselves. It’s in our nature. It’s a simple fact of life. We are predators, designed with an instinct to seek our prey.

But then there’s that other feeling. When I imagine feeding not just as a means of satiating hunger, but to satisfy another craving. The knowledge of dominance. To hold another life in my hands, and in one instant, control their destiny. Sadly, I believe this too, is part of being a vampire. With such great power can only come the desire to use it, to objectify others who are not capable of what we are.

I hate myself at times like this. I hate knowing that vampires can feel this level of detachment. In my human days I would be tempted to call it evil. But now it occupies a greyer area. It’s enough to make one wonder if humans and vampires can ever truly coexist. There are times I’ve doubted it.

But then I remember the other side of the equation. I may feel these things, but I have never acted on them. There are many humans who can’t say the same. I don’t need to look hard to find acts of unspeakable cruelty committed by humans upon one another. To find humans who can be just as evil and predatory. Oddly, I find this comforting. Both humans and vampires have such a ways to go before reaching a truly civilized existence. Both of us have to confront our darker nature to truly coexist.

Who knows, we may even be able to help each other along the way.

Robert Downey Jr. Is In Talks To Be The Next Vampire Lestat

From Slashfilm

After Neil Jordan’s intense and vivid Interview With the Vampire and Michael Rymer’s deathly dull Queen of the Damned, and in step with the current Twilight-fuelled vampmania, it looks that Universal is looking to reboot the cinematic incarnation of Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles. The first book in the series was Interview, and I’d imagine a purist-pleasing reboot would start there, though I don’t really expect that to be the case here. Even though Interview and Queen were Warner Bros. films, they’re still fresh in the memory and frequent enough on cable that they’re also far from being forgotten.
