'True Blood': I'm a sucker for it

Folks being won over by the dvds..great !

When True Blood premiered last season, I watched the first few episodes and gave it what amounted to a shrug of a review. The Alan Ball series about Southern vampires, based on Charlaine Harris' bestselling novels, didn't seem all that original to me, and I wrote that the two main stars, Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer, "frequently get lost in a series in which they're the central couple."

Well, thanks to the new first-season DVD compilation, I just finished watching the entire season and I now write as a convert: True Blood just kept getting better and better, and I'm officially eager to see Season Two when it starts June 14.

9-year-old filmmaker invited to play N.J. film festival at Rutgers

Read on, how they fight off the vampire is very inventive (HA)

NEW BRUNSWICK -- Unlike many 9-year-olds, Fanwood's Emma Kenney wasn't content to just watch a vampire movie. She wanted to write and direct a film about the mythological creature, too.

Emma's cinematic undertaking didn't surprise those who know her. She's been interested in acting and the arts from a very young age.

But when her film "The New Girl in Town" was selected to play in the New Jersey International Film Festival at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, friends and family gave her more credibility.

"I was shocked," said Emma's mother, Gillian Fisher. "When we found out she was accepted, I sent an e-mail asking if this was correct. I didn't want to tell her if it was a mistake."

True Blood Blood Copy : Vampires everywhere and a new perspective

VAMPIRES, VAMPIRES, EVERYWHERE

May 20th, 2009

So here’s a question for you, dear readers: what do you think of when you hear the word “Vampire”? Do you think about sex and V and vampire clubs and music with pounding bass lines? Really??? Vampires have been around for thousands of years and you think all we’re good for is putting on a good rave?

Clearly your parents haven’t taught you the evils of stereotyping. With all that vampires have to offer you, all the effort we’re putting into this relationship, why do you keep slapping labels on us? No, we don’t all wear capes. No, we don’t all crave the blood of innocents. No, we don’t all wield whips. No, we don’t all ravish your women and oh by the way, we can see ourselves in mirrors. We’re trying, here. We’re reaching out to you. You may not want to shake our hands, but at least put down the stakes when we offer them.

A NEW PERSPECTIVE

May 20th, 2009

Not to get too big a head, but it appears that BloodCopy is getting some attention.

I’ve just gotten a copy of the latest episode of THE PERSPECTIVE, hosted by Victoria Davis, and not only is she joining the growing vampire bandwagon by sharing video tidbits featuring we of the pale skin, but she even offers a direct shout out to yours truly (okay, to the site he runs… but close enough).

For those who perhaps haven’t seen our earlier posts on a vampire busker, pissed off Goth bar owner, ATM Withdrawal gone awry, or clips from the latest episode of the L.E.S. , this show does a wonderful job of presenting and contextualizing said videos in an entertaining and tidy news segment. And for those who have seen them… let’s just say nothing’s lost in a repeat viewing, especially with added commentary by the unparalleled Ms. Davis.

Seeing this truly brings a smile to my fanged face, and only further justifies the decision made by some very smart people to bring Bloodcopy — ah, wait I almost gave it away again, didn’t I? No worries, I’ll spill that secret soon enough.

Acting is in the blood of True Blood' cast member Carrie Preston

- McClatchy Newspapers

When journeyman actor Carrie Preston was hired for the cast of the HBO vampire series "True Blood," she knew her role was to provide the comic relief.

You can see what Preston did with the role of Arlene during the first season of "True Blood," which came out on DVD Tuesday. (And when the second season of the show starts June 14 on cable channel.)

Pay particular attention to the first-season finale, where Preston's role goes way beyond being a comic relief.

A huge chunk of the first season of "True Blood" - when it was not dealing with vampire lust, shape-shifting and bar fights - dealt with a murder mystery. It is Preston's character who ends up being a key figure in that storyline, which resulted an uncharacteristic heavy emotional moment.

"It was a very emotional episode. But, it was really great to be given that task and responsibility. I was responsible for the gravitas of the situation," Preston says during a telephone interview.

Go ask Dallas: What's up with that yellow sweater outfit we see Sookie wearing in the True Blood trailer?

Hey "D"

What's up with this outfit ? This isn't what she's wearing in the books is it ?

Thanks, V

Hey "V"

There has been lots of buzz, and none of it good about what Sookie is wearing as she arrives in Dallas on Anubis Air in the promo video.

Anyone know where you can buy (or not buy) this sweater ?

This is NOT the outfit she is wearing in the book. She is wearing a gray suit that she bought from Tara's Togs

From Page 40 Living Dead in Dallas

"You look very pretty, Sookie. Your clothes are just right."

"Thanks," I said, relieved and pleased. Bill had insisted that I needed to look "professional," and after I'd said, "Professional what?" he'd given me one of thoselooks. So I was wearing a gray suit over a white
shell, with pearl earrings and a black purse and heels. I'd even smoothed my hair back into a twisted shape at the back of my head with one of those Hairagamis I'd ordered from TV.

My friend Arlene had helped me. To my mind, I looked like a professional, all right—a professional funeral home attendant—but Bill seemed to approve. And I'd charged the whole outfit to him at Tara's Togs, since it was a legitimate business expense. So I couldn't complain about the cost.

On playing her character, Sookie Stackhouse:
"[She is] her own little action star. I get blooded and vomited on and beat up -- everything that the girl doesn't usually get to do in a show or film because they're usually the girlfriend."
On winning a Golden Globe: "The Golden Globe feels pretty damn good because I'm an adult, and it's the first major recognition I've had for my work as a non-child. Even though I'm only 26, I've been working since I was nine, so it feels like I worked for it."
How she's managed to stay grounded: "I came up through the ranks before the tabloid media became what it is currently. It wasn't as much as a feeding frenzy. I guess that's more good luck than good management. There was very little time to be affected, and my family didn't value that. I was usually at work or at school or at home doing my homework."

Waiting on the Undead: Five Things to Look Forward to in 'True Blood'

Pop Culture is full of monsters — zombies, King Kong, werewolves — but people seem to have a soft spot (located right around that neck area) for vampires.

From being horrifyingly depicted in Bram Stoker's "Dracula" and 1922's "Nosferatu" to seeming more hip, romantic and noir-like in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (Angel > Spike) or "Twilight" (Edward > Jacob), vampires have taken up a solid corner of the action and horror film genres ("30 Days of Night," the "Blade" series) while also continuing to ooze sexuality.

In fact, the poem "The Vampire" by Rudyard Kipling — which he wrote in 1897 — isn't about a bloodsucking fiend at all; instead, it's about a woman who scorns a man's love and leaves him "so some of him lived but the most of him died." Tragic.

But if you go back to that oozing sexuality thing, HBO's "True Blood" is pretty much where it's at. The most popular series on the network since "The Sopranos" and "Sex and the City," it's based on the bestselling "Southern Vampire Mysteries" books by Charlaine Harris and stars Anna Paquin (who recovers from her disappointing turn as Rogue in the "X-Men" series) and Stephen Moyer (one word: dreamy) as Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress, and Bill Compton, a centuries-old vampire, who fall in love.

True love never works out with vampires, though, right? One viewing of "Interview with the Vampire" would be enough to figure that out.

So we wouldn't be all that shocked if all kinds of obstacles launch themselves into Sookie's and Bill's happy-sometimes-violent life in the fake Bon Temps, La., or if some of those obstacles include Bill's former love interests, or maybe Sookie thinks she can't handle it all, blah blah blah. If you've prepared yourself to pore over the show's first season now that it's out on DVD, we can't blame you — we have, too.

Here's the five things we're most looking forward to about the next season of "True Blood," which debuts on June 14.

THE CHEMISTRY
Paquin and Moyer may play lovers on TV, and now they are in real life, too — Moyer confirmed in February that the two co-stars are dating. On-screen romances that turn into off-screen ones are kind of the best kind (for example: Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams from "The Notebook"), and when Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz did it on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," screaming fangirls everywhere liked to pretend they could notice a different kind of intensity in all those illicit kissing scenes. Granted, any good actor or actress (and considering Paquin has an Oscar, she definitely falls into this category) can fake it ‘til they feel it, but here's to hoping the sex scenes get even sexier.

EVAN RACHEL WOOD
Marilyn Manson's current (or ex; who really knows with those two?) girlfriend has a pretty good track record for melodrama ("Thirteen;" Green Day's "Wake Me When September Ends" video; that Beatles musical "Across the Universe;" and "The Wrestler"), and thanks to her Dita Von Teese-copying image choices of late (dyed hair, lots of make-up, uncomfortable amounts of cleavage), imagining her as a vampire isn't that bizarre, actually. Wood will join the cast this season as the all-powerful Sophie-Anne Leclerc, the vampire queen of Louisiana, and while that sounds a little campy, we can get behind it. Though she's kind of obnoxious as a person, Wood does that whole pained-young-girl thing pretty well (in fact, she's made a career out of it), so we figure she'll probably be believable. Plus, she did have all that training writhing around in blood in Manson's video for "Heart-Shaped Glasses" ... don't watch it. It's gross.

JESSICA
Just when it seemed like all the threats toward Bill and Sookie's relationship were gone — Rene's dead, Sam's finally beginning to realize he doesn't have a shot, etc. — Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) shows up, thrusting her existence between them like a clove of garlic or something. A young vampire that Bill had to create as part of his punishment for murdering another vamp, Jessica is pretty much the Drusilla to Bill's and Sookie's Angel and Buffy, and we wouldn't be surprised to see some awkward love triangle action going on. We can't help but miss Spike, though.

HEP D
Hepatitis D is nonchalantly mentioned in a few episodes of the first season — especially in "Mine," in which Bill lays stake to Sookie so his other bloodthirsty vampire friends will back off — but horrifies the vamps as the only blood-borne pathogen that can actually hurt them. Bill states that Hepatitis D can make a vampire weak for a few weeks or so, during which anyone (such as those dastardly Rattrays) can stake them, steal their blood or hurt them in any other way. While the science of this doesn't make too much sense (can't Hepatitis D only make a person sick if they already have Hepatitis B?), this has to be a plotline, right? A swine flu-like Hepatitis D outbreak among the vampire community? Broadcast news channels in Bon Temps would have a field day.

JASON
Jason Stackhouse (Ryan Kwanten) is all kinds of messed up (his love/hate relationship with vampire victims, for example), and he seems primed to be a character similar to Matt from "Nip/Tuck" — essentially annoying, unnecessarily angry and vaguely immoral. What other screw-ups will he get into, aside from the murder-suspect shenanigans of last season? We're guessing a lot ... and we'll be waiting and watching.

' You'll be the death of me' the title song for True Blood Season One Episode twelve

I recently did a Season 2 Spoiler show for my Blogtalk radio show, where we looked at what we might know about the upcoming episode by knowing and examining the title song for that episode.

I can't tell you how many emails I received from folks saying they felt so stupid for not realizing that the True Blood episodes were named for songs. It's OK but I thought it might be a good idea to look back at the song, the artist and the lyrics for each of last season's episode title songs.

So let's look back to Season 1, Ep 12 ' You'll be the death of me' which originally aired November 23, 2008.

'You'll be the death of me' is from his 2006 album Introduction to Johnny Winter.

Album description: Before guitarist Johnny Winter stormed onto the American blues scene in the late 1960s, the lanky, hot-shot Texan cut a number of sides for small labels, and many of those tunes are compiled on this well-selected Fuel 2000 disc. In addition to tearing into originals such as the charmingly youthful "School Day Blues" and the fiery "You'll Be the Death of Me," Winter offers up a number of excellent cover tunes, including Johnny "Guitar" Watson's caddish classic "Gangster of Love." Although it's clear that the renowned six-stringer was just warming up at this early stage in his career, there are enough gems here to make AN INTRODUCTION TO JOHNNY WINTER more than just a diehards-only collection.

Johnny Winter (born John Dawson Winter III on 23 February 1944 in Beaumont, Texas) is an American blues guitarist and singer. He is the first son of John and Edwina Winter who were very much responsible for Johnny and his younger brother Edgar Winter’s early musical awareness.

He began performing at a young age with Edgar, who is also affected with albinism. His recording career began at the age of 15, when their band “Johnny and the Jammers” released “School Day Blues” on a Houston record label. During this same period, he was able to see performances by classic blues artists such as Muddy Waters, B. B. King and Bobby Bland.
From his bio on his web page http://johnnywinter.net/bio/

Winter remains a native Texan, born and bred in Beaumont, the town where the famous Spindletop gusher came in to kick off the "black gold" rush in 1901. Growing up in rough-and-tumble town populated by oilfield wildcatters and shipyard workers, .....

Racial tensions in Beaumont were still high in those days. The town had been side to one of the worst race riots in Texas history just nine months before Johnny's birth. Mobs wandered the streets, businesses burned, martial law went into effect, and more than 2,000 uniformed National Guardsmen and Texas Rangers sealed off the town from the rest of the world until tempers cooled. Despite the brutal legacy, Johnny remembers never hesitating as a kid to venture into black neighborhoods to hear and play music.

I can't find lyrics or a video of Johnny performing this, let me know if you know of any!
This is Johnny performing Mississippi Blues
